Bri. One of the disadvantages of being invisibly next to the umpire's
chair taking photos of beautiful teenage girls, is that it would be
completely inappropriate to go chat up their mums. So whilst I have
spoken to Lauren, I have never spoken to her mum.

Well it is a good thing she was not playing a qualifier (since in
Thursday's matches they all won).

You could have mentioned that Ashley was playing Lauren Albanese.
Lauren's mum is awfully cute.

First game tonight, stadium 7:00pm PDT.
Ashley is against a wildcard, but so far wildcards are doing ok.

It turns out that Ashley had a left abdominal muscle pull that forced
her retirement in her first round match at the Pacific Life Open.

Ashley lost. After being down 6-0, 3-0 Ashley retired. Don't know if
she had an injury going in and tried to play through it or what exactly
was wrong at this point.

Ashley plays in her first round match today at the Pacific Life
Open. Ashley will face Vasilisa Bardina from Russia in the opening
round. I don't know anything much about Bardina. I will assume
Ashley can and probably should beat her. However Ashley is
susceptible to losing to the unknowns, especially in the first
round.

Now, should Ashley get past the first round, she has a great draw and
she should go a few rounds at this tournament.

Peng shouldn't be a problem at all, Ashley recently beat her
already. I've seen Peng play, if she can get up in the rankings as
high as she has, why isn't Ashley there?

The next opponent would likely be Bammer, Ashley lost to her the last
time but has defeated Bammer in the past. Ashley probably should
beat her three out of four chances, so it's Ash's turn again and it's
on a hard court this time.

You would suspect Ivanovic to show in the Quarters. Ivanovic won't
be so easy, not as though the other matches will be easy but Ashley
is probably favored in two of the previous three and won't be favored
against Ivanovic. However Ashley will have a fighting chance against
Ivanovic with a shot at the Semi's.

Getting to the round of 16 should be the minimum goal for Ashley in
this tournament with it all gravy thereafter and she has a good shot
at sopping up some of that gravy. Even Petrova or Golovin wouldn't
be safe against Ashley should she get to the quarters. Her
confidense would be high enough by then that she could challenger
either and with both of those girls known to fall apart on occasion
who knows?

I don't think this site has been around long and is driven by who you search
for on that site.
Ashley was in the top 25 during the Aussie open, which included all celebs,
not just
Tennis players. Even though she alienates fans at times.........she still a
fan favorite.

Looking at the players mentioned on that site, I cannot help wonder
what percentage are amanged by IMG.

The article on Ashley appears to be from Wikipedia, and there are
plenty of other tennis players on Wikipedia, so why only those few on
the site?

So I headed to see Ashley Harkleroad play Daniela Hantuchova. I'd
seen both of them play doubles and they'd been noticeably the best
players on court in their respective matches, so this looked the pick
of the matches that were up first.

For the record:
Daniela Hantuchova bt Ashley Harkleroad 6-7, 7-5, 6-3
This was a cracker. 6 breaks in the first set; Harkleroad up 4-0 in
the second; Hantuchova gets going, looks a certain winner; Harkleroad
ups her level in the third; at a set all and 3-3 I wondered about a
monster 3rd set. That wasn't to be, but it took nearly 3 hours for
Hantuchova to win and she definitely deserved it. I picked the right
match, Tommy Haas won his easily.

There was a real contrast in the emotional states of the two players-
Hantuchova needed to be behind to get aggressive and play her best.
She was emotionally inexpressive-during the game all we got were fist
clenches (not pumps); once, on a crucial point, it was a double
clench. I think she needs her doubles partner to consistently get the
best of her. It seems Ashley needs her doubles partner to keep her on
an even keel: we had racket throwing, towels snatched off ball kids
and a drama queen ending. She let her racket fall to the ground and
then the tears started-she clearly thought she was a lot closer to
winning than she was. Given her behaviour, which cost her the crowd,
it amused me that Ricky Ponting is Ashley's president.

You do worry a bit for Hantuchova-I remember hearing at Wimbledon one
year that she'd been struggling emotionally to refute reports of
anorexia, bulimia or both. She won't be the only player to have lied
about her weight on her biog (I met an Aussie, who reckoned Serena
was 15-20 kg more than the programme said), but I doubt any other
player is saying she weighs more than she actually does. You really
do want to feed her-her legs are smaller than other folk's arms

Still she made it through a long match, so what do I know. So,
Harkleroad stopped crying, Hantuchova went for some lunch (I hope)
and I was off to Margaret Court for some Mardy Fish, great name, but
no accompanying tantrum.

Ashley was supposed to play a USTA Challenger in Hawaii this week and
would have been the number one seed. However that was ruined when
Ashley and Galina Voskoboeva made the quarter finals in Australia which
they lost at love. Don't know what happened on that one yet.

Ashley and Galina are through to the Quarter finals in the doubles at a
Grand Slam Tournament.

Has anyone looked at the draw? There is no one in the draw they can't
beat. In fact they have already defeated 3 of the teams. The only
team left to worry about is the team they play in the quarters and only
because I don't know that much about that team.

They have already defeated both teams they would face in the semi's and
they have defeated (if memory serves) two of the four teams in the top
half, including the team of Huber/Black who I expect to be in the final.

HERE IS A BIG TIME PREDICTION ----------

ASHLEY AND GALINA WIN THE DOUBLES GRAND SLAM.......

If you have followed these two since they started playing together in
Charleston last year, you'll understand why I'm predicting them to win.

Ashley had a great win on day four in the second round of the
Australian Open. Ashley, as her M.O. seems to go, took out a seeded
player in Anna-Lena Groenefeld, who was the no 17 seed. Ashley came
out on fire breaking Groenefeld in her first two service games.
Ashley did give up a break in the middle game of the first three but
only after it went to duece six or seven times. Ashley also had
three or four game points before giving the break to Groenefeld.
The rest of the match went in a similar fashion with Ashley winning
the match 6-2, 6-2.

Ashley broke Groenefeld 5 times only giving up the one break in the
second game of the first set. Ashley didn't have as many winner as
she did in her first match with only 9 but she did also reduce her
unforced errors to 14.

Ashley, also had a good net winning percentage although with fewer
approaches than in the previous match.

Later in the day Ashley teamed up with what appears to be a
permanent partner in Galina Voskoboeva, to defeat their first round
opponents Meilen Tu and Milagros Sequera 6-3, 7-5.

Ashley will face Daniele Hantuchova in the next round. Most
Harkleroad fans will remember the great match had with Daniele at
the 2003 French Open.

Ashley had huge win for her in the first round of the Aussie Open
just a few minutes ago (9:30PM Eastern Standard Time - USA)

Ashley defeated Meng Yuan in straight sets 6-3 6-0. Ashley dominated
the stats, losing serve only one time and breaking Yuan 5 times.

This had to be an encouraging match for Ashley especially after the
slow start she had to the season down under.

Ashley's stats are on the left below.

   Match Summary
     Harkleroad (USA) Yuan (CHN)

   1st Serve % 39 of 54 = 72 % 32 of 45 = 71 %

   Aces 1 1

   Double Faults 4 2

   Unforced Errors 27 19

   Winning % on 1st Serve 26 of 39 = 67 % 15 of 32 = 47 %

   Winning % on 2nd Serve 8 of 15 = 53 % 3 of 13 = 23 %

   Winners (Including Service) 28 5

   Receiving Points Won 27 of 45 = 60 % 20 of 54 = 37 %

   Break Point Conversions 5 of 7 = 71 % 1 of 5 = 20 %

   Net Approaches 24 of 26 = 92 % 1 of 6 = 17 %

The draw is out for the Australian Open. Ashley has drawn, Meng Yuan
of China. Yuan is ranked 114 in the world.

Yuan will be a formidable opponent but Ashley should prevail in this
match. The Chinese girls are really coming on strong in Tennis but
this match should go to Ashley.

In the second round Ashley is likely to see Anna-Lena Groenefeld.
Anna will be a very tough opponent however if Ashley playes well this
is still a match she can win. Ashley tends to play better against
higher ranked players. If Ashley doesn't lay an egg in round one
this could be a good match to watch and should Ashley win the match
it would go a long way to help the mental portion of Ashley's game.

The third round would likely be Hantuchova, and would be a fun
rematch to watch. Clisters would finally end Ashley's run in the
fourth round should she get that far.

Ashley has a good draw. 3 players she can beat before getting to
Clisters. The question is will she beat them.

Ashley hasn't had much success so far in the early part of the season
allthough she has played some close tight matches against some top
players.

This tournament could be a big step in launching a great year for
Ashley if she can just bear down and get through some rounds at this
years Australian open.

Ashley playes Sybille Bammer of Australia in the first round of the
Moorilla Hobart International in about 8 hours as of this posting. It
will be a late afternoon early evening match "down under"

Ashley actually should win this round and Ashley needs a win. She has
defeated Bammer in the past. Bammer is playing on home field turf but
in Tennis that doesn't hold as much weight as it does in team sports.

This tournament is already in "crazy" mode as Karolina Sprem had to
qualify and lost in the first round. She lost to Tatiana Poutchek, a
good player but not a match you would think Karolina would lose. Then
you stop and think, Karolina has to qualify and Ashley doesn't? What
happened. Injuries for Karolina is her big issue but still you just
don't expect to see her in qualifying.

Well, Ashley hasn't had in luck in the Hopman Cup. Ashley played
Golovin strong, taking a set off of Tatiana and losing a set by one
break.
Ashley didn't fair so well against Petrova losing 3 and 0.

Ashley and Mardy Fish have also struggled as a doubles team. Knowing
how well Ashley has been playing doubles in the past year, you wonder
if it's Mardy or Ashley or are they as a team struggling.

Ashley plays Alica Molik in the USA match against Australia. The
Australian papers seem to think Alica can beat Ashley. Don't be
surprised to see Ashley step up and beat Alica.

I do not see Ashley entered in the last NA ITF event, San Diego - so
the year may be closing until the January 2007 season start in the Far
East.

Everything is 'early' this year starting January 1st.

Happy Thanksgiving to our US folk.
