Pull up Yahoo tennis ... there are comments on the unfairness of the WTA
ranking....
Here was my 2 cents worth on their site.

... there is a valid argument to both sides. Currently the WTA system favors
performance over a 12 month running period. The system also 'rewards' players
who play 18+ events per year. There is also a strong argument that players doing
well in the premiere events should be given stronger recognition.
... One possible solution would might involve one or two tweaks to the current
system. Here are three proposals.
I have friends who would argue the first, but I believe the women players are
pressured to play too often. Let's limit the number of events per year they can
total points, say 16-19 events per year, take the best of their performances and
not include the others. There remains incentive for playing as you may 'better'
cumulative points by taking the 'best of' issues. A second suggestion is easy...
increase the point awards for the premier events, say Grand Slams and Tier 1
events. Last proposal is a bit more complicated, but logical. Place a lower
'total' on the older events, so say each quarter (three months) a reduction
factor is placed on points awarded in pervious quarters, not drastic, but
recognizing a win 12 months ago should not count the same as today... maybe
10-12 months ago points reduced by 25%, 7-9 months ago 15% and 4-6 months ago by
5%... again recognizing current performance should rate stronger.
