Megan Shaughnessy, a Richmond native who is the highest-ranked player to
ever enter the tournament at No. 55 in the world, was awarded the No. 1 seed
in the 32-player singles main draw. No. 84 Ashley Harkleroad, another
American who would have likely been the No. 2 seed, withdrew from the
tournament. Her absence secured the second-seed for No. 89 Varvara
Lepchenko, who reached the final of the tournament in 2005. Lepchenko and
Shaughnessy are the only top-100 players in the field...
Maybe Ashley is who had the injury in doubles at Sea Island. May be resting
it.
I'll see what I can find out.
