Ashley started out 2-0 against Santangelo and then never won another
game. Ashley double faulted 7 times and she rarely doubles.
Santangelo was hitting all her serves in the second set. It was one
of those matches where one player was just slightly off while the
other player was in a zone.
Ashley used to play pretty well against the big hitters but more and
more it seems that the big hitters cause her more problems than they
have in the past, even though even Ashley hits a bit harder than she
used to hit, especially her serve.
In doubles Ashley teamed with Mattek. They won their first round
yesterday. Today they were pretty competitive but they just didn't
have enough for Dechy/Zvonareva who had help from the chair umpire.
As an example Dechy/Zvonareva gave up on a ball they thought was
out. It hit the baseline, and the line judge called it good. All
the sudden they went crazy and just pointed to a spot about a foot
down the line form where it actually hit square on the line. On top
of that they were blocking the chairs view when it hit. The chair
came down and looked at the spot they pointed to and called it out.
The bad part was he didn't even ask for the line umpires help and the
line umpire is one of the better ones out there that I've seen over
the years. There were at least 3 other circumstances just like that
and Harkleroad/Mattek ended up losing the game each time and they
were close games where one point can make a big difference.
