Asafa Powell scare!

http://www.sportingeagle.com/Stories/Asafa6.htm.asp

Asafa Powell who clocked a record breaking 9.77 seconds in the 100-
metre at the Athens Super Grand Prix meet, bettering the world
record held by Tim Montgomery (9.78 seconds), which was set in Paris
in 2002.

MELBOURNE, Australia (March 6) - World 100m record holder Asafa
Powell suffered a scare during training Monday afternoon in
Australia.

Powell left the track in the middle of his training at the stadium
where he and World Championships 100m silver medallist Michael
Frater, World Championships 100m hurdles silver and bronze medallist
Brigitte Foster-Hylton, and Olympians Winston Smith and Ainsley
Waugh were working out under the watch-full eyes of coach Stephen
Francis.

Reports are that Powell, the world's fastest man, went to lie on the
side of the track after experiencing tightening in his legs, but
after a 15-minute delay and rubdown, he returned to the track.

Not Injured

"He's not injured," M2006 athlete liaison officer Maurie Plant told
the Herald Sun.

"It was a hard training session and he felt like he was going to
cramp. His legs tightened a little bit but after a rub he went out
and finished the session with no problem."

Powell, who is in Australia preparing for the Commonwealth Games,
which is set to start next week, is down to face a top-class field
at Thursday night's Telstra A-series meet at Melbourne Park.

Apart from Frater, who has a personal best of 10.03, Powell will
face a seven other sprinters with sub-10 times.

But a video analysis of Powell's 9.1-run anchoring his club 4x100m
relay team in Kingston a fortnight ago suggests he is capable now of
running 9.9sec for 100m off the blocks.

If he can do that at Melbourne's Olympic Park he will break Sydney
Olympic champion and Maurice Greene's meet record of 10.05 seconds --
a mark Powell's coach, Stephen Francis, said is in trouble.

"He is in great shape, better than he has ever been,'' Francis
warned.
