Mark T,

Just a question on sizing. I think I have sorted a jersey size, but I need a
little direction on the pants side of things. Is it based on the perimeter of
the upper leg, or the waste measurment?

With all the riding I have done this year I have droped from a 36 to a 34 inch
pants size (M), but my upper legs are around the 22 inch size (XXL). I suspect I
am not measuring the right things. Do you have a contact for cannibal so I can
check with them directly? I don't own a pair of nicks, so I sort of want to get
it right.

Cheers

Hi Michael the best bet is to get someone to measure you up and check these against the measurements on the back of the PDF order form. I’m guessing you’ll be a small or xsmall, but this will give you the “pro” fit so if you want a looser fitting jersey you may want to order one size up.

Well done to Steve and the kids from McCarthy High School for getting up to
Kooralbyn to give the 12hr a hit. Our team was set up near them, and it was
great to see their enthusiam continue throughout the day. I hope to see them
and a couple of the Armidale riders back up to the sunny state, in the
future.

In case anyone is looking for something a little different …

I’m organising a ride from NE National Park to close to Georges Junction, using firetrails and 4WD tracks. Lots of stunning country, gorges, rainforest, almost all downhill (trust me!). The details are still a little sketchy as I’m checking on the condition of an interesting looking side trail, but overall it will be….

45-55 km long,

Starting at 1350m and finishing at 120m

15th Sept, leaving from UNEMC shed

I’m also after someone to drive a vehicle for the car shuttle, so if you want to see the area but not do any riding, come along.

Let me know if you are interested

Sorry Steve R, I will be in Queensland the weekend of the Port ride, but am keen
to try and make both the Coffs and Armidale rides when they are on.

I mentioned to Matt B, if anyone is interested in a decent night work out - I
have about a 10km track in the hills adjacent to my place just north of
Tamworth. Its good for night riding as it is not too techy, but is made up of a
series of flowing hills with a few log rolls and bits thrown in to keep you
awake. It is also mostly single track. 3-4 laps at pace makes for a good Friday
night out. For those doing the Scott 24, its probably a good training ground.

Anyone interested in a fast-ish social ride, let me know, I am hoping to go one
Friday night in the next 4 weeks (not this Friday).
Cheers

Steve Mair

G'day all,

Some of you will know that we've been having some informal chats with people
from the Port and Coffs Clubs about setting up a 3 way mini-enduro series.

We thought we'd have a go at having one race in each centre before the end
of this year, that we publicise among our own club members, just to see if
we can get some more people to play with in our own backyard and so we can
experience riding on some good tracks that aren't too far away.

Port already has a 3 hour enduro pencilled into their calendar for 7
October. Those of you entered in the Scott 24 hr will know this is the
weekend before - it could serve as a final hit-out/fitness tester before
your taper, on a track that's a blast to ride (and probably not quite as
tiring as our own track). Those of you who aren't doing the Scott and
haven't been to Port before should still think seriously about going - the
track is really fun (nowhere near as hard as Killingworth!)and Port Mac is
lovely all year round. By then, hopefully we'll have our club jerseys, so
this would be a great opportunity to represent!

We have in mind racing in Coffs in late October/early November (before it
gets REALLY hot), then up here in late November (once it's warm enough for
them to cope with). I'd really like the coast riders to see what we have to
offer (which in my riding experience ain't half bad), but I think it would
help them make the trek up here if we make a good showing at their events.

I will be doing the October 7 race and could take 2 others with me. It
starts at 9.00 at their Telegraph Point track, so with an early start you
can get down and back in the day. You can get more details & directions from
their website (www.hvmtbr.com). If anyone would like to do the race and
would like a lift, please let me know.

Cheers

Well done Mark, matt and tream mates. I feel a bit jealous and am starting to
think I did the wrong race. I did 14 laps at Kooralbyn which worked out a bit
short of 160km (obviously an easier track), but none the less came 10th out of
about 25 solos. Without taking anything from your win, you do give me hope of a
top 3 finish one of these years.

Will you guys run the 5th Enduro that was cancelled in July at some stage. A
good hit out between now an October would be good. The kids from school are also
super keen, particularly after their race on the weekend.

Lincoln, Charlie and Paul who came up from Tamworth for your 4th Enduro would
probably also be keen for another go.

Cheers

G'day all,

Well - grabbed a slightly extended lunch-hour for a quick hit-out on the
roadie. Apart from the wind QUADRUPLING as soon as I rolled out the driveway
and somehow managing to be in my face the whole ride, I got swooped by a
maggie just I was coming back to the edge of town out on Dangarsleigh Road.
Is this the first of the season? Seems pretty early to me.

By the way - is anyone interested in a run up Duval some time Sunday -
preferably morning. I was thinking of starting from Uni, riding out to the
damn and up - then down through Newholme and back via the big
sticky-sucky-black-mud hill (provided it doesn't rain between now & then).
Trotts, have you got the name/number of the person to ring to get the ok to
ride through Newholme?

I got away with 15 laps which was 150km total. I think i did more km at Port 12 but killingworth has got to be a harder track. I think the boys did 20+ laps didn't they???

Glad to hear you guys had a good time up there in qld, sounds like the track is nowhere near as bad as has been reported, might have to head up there sometime.

Dear Mark

Was speaking to Brendan Heywood, and he sent me the link to your New England Mountain Bike Club. I don't know whether you're aware of the event we are holding on 28 October at Walcha to raise funds for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, so thought I would send you a link in case you or club members might be interested.

Its a Team Challenge, and therefore a slightly different style of event - the team must try to be the first with all three riders over the finish line, competing in their respective divisions. It'll be about 100km, through some very varied terrain - sealed roads, dirt, farmland, forest and national park, so should be a good medium to hard ride. And Walcha are staging a craft, wine & food festival over the weekend too, so there'll be a lot happening.

Best wishes

Ahh yeah… night ‘laps’.  Actually there was only one night lap and I threw in the towel in true Hazo form because my gears would skip about 6 times each time I tried to peddle up a hill – and there were just a few hills that I needed to peddle up!  I did really enjoy hanging about at the end, watching the boys get really nervous and sort out team tactics to try and bag their win.  It was also good fun to hang about the finish line at the end, particularly to watch Brian come in at a blistering pace, skid to the finish line and say ‘That was the final lap for the Gentlemen’s Club’ with a very formal English accent – very stylish.  (Not sure if that is exactly how it happened but that is how I will remember it!)

I thought I'd have a go at putting up the first post about the 12 hour
Newcastle race on Saturday. I'm sure it will be followed by plenty of other
accounts but here are the basics.

Entries included:
Mark Trotter - solo
Scott Hazelton - solo
Trantham - pairs (Steve Rugendyke and Gary Eastment)
The Gentlemens Club - 4 teams (Matt Benham, Dave Fisher, Mark Fisher and
Brian Arnott)
The CWA Armidale Brance - 4 teams (Jo Benham, Hannah Trotman, Karen Eastment
and Tieneke Trotter)

The New England Mountain Bikers were fairly well represented on the day as
you can tell by the teams above. The gentlemens club made a blistering
start to the day, I think Matt was the first one back after the first lap
and the gentlemen pretty much would have held that position all day. The
CWA took it pretty easy as anticipated with plenty of time given to a good
team lunch and lots of chatting. The laps that were done, were completed (I
think) in pretty good times. Hannah and Karen put in a great effort on
their first 12 hour race, on a difficult and slippery track particularly
seeing as we had assured them the track would be easy - it wasn't. Gary and
Steve consistently churned out the laps with either one of the two on course
all day. Hazo and Mark set out together and were within a minute of each
other on the 4th lap. That was until the camp chair of death began to sap
Hazo of all fighting spirit leaving Mark on track to slog it out alone.
Mark spent most of the day on track, grinding away and seemed to be having a
fairly eventless ride until he returned from his second last lap with a
helmet full of dirt from where he directly (speared) head butted the ground.

How we ended up:
I'm not sure how the CWA went but I think it would be fairly safe to say we
got last place in the teams of 4. Also not sure about Trantham but I have a
feeling they were in the top 5 of pairs. Hazo, after being consumed by the
chair didn't complete much after the 3rd hour so was probably down the back
end of the solo entries. The gentlemens club needed to pull out a quick
last lap to grab the victory and Brian bravely took it for the team, he
brought them home in first place with the best time against about 2 other
teams on the same number of laps. There were 10 teams racing in teams of 4.
Mark also managed to bag a first place after a fairly persistent solo ride,
coming in with a better time but equal laps to the second place getter.

It was a great fun day, pretty relaxing for some, and wonderful to catch up
with so many great families and friends who came to watch and support. A
big thank you to those who made the effort to travel up from Sydney and the
Central Coast.

A big congratulations to Mark Trotter for his Solo victory. All that riding must of played with his mind a little though, with one hour to go he wanted to get away from it all Ostrich style. Big thanks to Brian Arnott and Dave Fisher for pumping out 12 of the fastest laps ever and to Mark Fisher for his hot laps and fire lighting skills. I would have to say that apart from that "bodgy" weld mesh bridge sneaking up on me every lap, that was one of the most enjoyable tracks ever (it could of just been the bike I was riding hey Gary).

The Hunter valley MTB club will be putting on more of these races so to all who didn't go this time make sure you get yourself an entry next time.

OK, I've been a tad busy today but am very disappointed with the level of heckling thus far. Hazelton, in particular, who rode about 1m for every dollar his bike is worth, is softer than freshly whipped cream and deserves significant hammering.

Well done Trotter and gentlemen for the wins, very impressive! Hope the trophies are taking pride of place somewhere prominent.

Highlights for me:
1. The track was a lot of fun (except for the log just after the base of that big dipper- why do they break the flowy bits like that?!!). I really liked the set of corners on the downhill in last km or 2. Didn't everyone? Also some of the single after the bodgy wire bridge. Nice nice nice!
2. Trotter having several helmet vents totally filled with dirt from afore mentioned 'spear stack'. I wish i'd seen that...
3. Pairs riding: I felt tired the next day, but I think was more to do with trying to sleep in the car friday night.
4. Sitting around catching up- loved it!

By the way, I sat in the 'chair of death', and felt no ill effect whatsoever!!

Thanks Steve for the bars and gels, scott for guarding the 'bush side' on fri night, Tin for being the 'freindliest person on track', oh and special mention to dave for having a bike with all the gears working- really fast!:-)

Bring on Canberra...

Sorry I missed the Newcastle jaunt - sounds like you guys had a good
time and were quite successful place wise - except who ever it was
who had a thing with that chair. Anyway I was outvoted by the school
team who were hell bent on a trip north - so north we went.

For those who have not done the Kooralbyn track - try it some time.
Just over 11km traversing, ascending and decending a relativily
steep mountain range. Plenty of switchbacks and almost all single
track. It is superbly designed so as you seem to go up and down with
such regularity that you don't notice how high you actually climb
until the final decent into the transition zone which is just
awsome - about a 240 metre decent.

Technically there is a nice smattering of rock gardens, as mentioned
earlier a plethora of switchbacks, a great rock shelf decent and a
couple of steep narrow shutes which were particularly fun in the
dark. Also plenty of fast flowing sections thrown in.

All rideable using the middle ring up front until 9 hours of fatigue
kicked in - then the granny gear had to be called into action, but
only on about 2 short sections.

The kids had a ball - no casualties. There were a good half dozen
superfits zooming around. Overtaking did not seem to come up as an
issue as feared - there seemed a goodly amount of space or side
tracks to mean even the slowest riders did not have to stop, or pull
off.

The kids managed 12 laps per team of 3 which they were pretty happy
with - particulary Tom whose Kmart bike with the "not to be used off
road" sticker crawled back on the last lap with the bearings almost
totally seized up.

I managed 14 laps in just under 12 hours. I might have pushed for
one more, but my lights were not going to go another 45 minutes - at
least thats what I told myself at the time. Not sure where that put
me place wise - winner hit 23 laps. I think I ended up some where in
the middle of the solos.

Anyway I think they do a 6 hour race October 28 for any of you guys
who may be inclined to back up after the Scott 24. I will probably
pass as I think I will probably try the Walcha Team event that same
day.

I will be tempted to head to Kooralbyn again given the opportunity

Cheers

Steve M

Just a quick reminder to those riders heading down to the 12 hrs of not so much darkness at New Castle this weekend. You need to bring a printed and signed copy of your email entry form along with you (why we will probably never know).
