Monday evening saw the inaugural twilight social race held out in the
Pine Forest, with 12 riders taking to the course in perfect conditions.
Racing was over a 3.5km lap times two (7 kms; nice & short!), a good
mix of fireroad, singletrack and technical stuff. The bikes were also
mixed, from hard tail cross country machines, all the way to free-ride
beasts (go Al!), reflecting the have-a-go nature of the race.
Disappointingly, John didn't turn up on his downhill bike to do a lap
as promised!
Dave Fisher lead from early and looked in no danger until he decided to
take a wrong turn on the second lap, leaving yours truly to finish
first, with Dave in second. Tim Watt was dangerously close in third on
what's effectively a dirt-jumper. In other news, Mark Troter showed the
fruits of a rigorous bike maintenance program by having four
mechanicals to leave him well back.
Overall, a heap of fun and a successful evening, with thanks to Tin'
for doing the timing and taking some snaps. A unanimous decision was
made to keep racing each monday at 6 until daylight saving ends, so get
in the action and make your way (with your friends!) to the second gate
of the pine forest next week. I even promise the course will be better
marked, and as sponsorship filters through prizes will appear!
In the meantime, of course, the Four Cross racing will be on again up
at the track (above Donnelly St), this Friday at 6. Again, the idea is
to come and have a go, you don't need a special bike and you will have
fun.
See you on your bike,
Gary.
