Bike riders to have their say on Kookaburra Crest schedule

24 Jan 2005

Bike riders of all ages are being invited to have their say on future events at Kookaburra Crest, the city's new mountain bike and BMX course at Drummond Park.

This Friday (Jan 28) at 6pm there will be a barbecue and some social racing as well as the chance to discuss the potential uses the course.

During the last fortnight, a group of BMX enthusiasts, headed by Shane Marshall, has been building a 17 jump course beside the mountain bike track. They are planning to hold competitions and demonstrations throughout the year. The course has been transferred from the skate park to Kookaburra Crest.

"On Friday we'd like to see as many cyclists as possible at the track because it is open to the whole community," said Youth Council President and Mountain Bike competitor Dave Rugendyke.

"Some people will be interested in regular racing and being part of the club and others will want to use it informally. It is a community resource and available to all riders regardless of age and experience." Mr Rugendyke said the Club was considering starting Junior Development classes for BMX riders and clinics for mountain bike riders.

The Kookaburra Crest course is on the international map following the successful National 4X championship event in December. Further national and international events are being planned.

"On a day to day basis, the course is there for local riders to enjoy but some may wish to participate in events and also to build on their skills," Mr Rugendyke said. "We'd like to have their input.

"A reminder for those using the course is that helmets are mandatory and other protective gear is optional but recommended." Entry to Friday night's event is by a gold coin donation.
