There are teams at the Tucson JCC, Ford Aquatics, and Ventana Canyon.
Those are the ones I know of off of the top of my head. There may be
others at the local YMCAs but the three that I mentioned are active.

There will be more open water swims in Arizona in the future. June
Hussey (she swims for Ventana Canyon) is our Open Water person and is
working on this. Stay tuned...

Anybody out there enjoy open water swimming?

I want to hear people's thoughts about having a series of open water
swims this fall in Arizona.

There may be a couple of swims in Tempe Town Lake and even an ocean
mile down in Rocky Point...

What I want to hear is if this is something that you would like to do.

Let's hear your thoughts.

Here is a great article on Nick Brunelli

Story:
Mansfield native is hot in the pool

Each year, competitive swimmer Nick Brunelli gets faster and faster.

In 2002, he was ranked 115th in the world in the 50-meter freestyle; in 2003, he
was 53rd; 2004, he was 20th and in 2005, he was 5th.

Those of us who were at the Short Course State Championships at Brophy
on Saturday witnessed a record and a miracle within five minutes.

Ron Johnson set a new record in the 200 Yard Breaststroke on Saturday
morning and was warming down when he went into cardiac arrest. He was
quickly pulled from the pool and was given CPR by fellow swimmers,
several of whom were medical professionals.

After a few minutes, the paramedics arrived and Ron was taken to a
nearby hospital. He underwent successful quadruple bypass heart
surgery on Saturday and his condition is improving. As I receive
updates on his condition I will post an update on the blog.

In the meantime, keep Ron and his family in your thoughts and prayers.
Many of us have either seen him compete, been coached by him, or have
read his writings about swimming. He is a living legend and a part of
the Arizona Masters Swimming family.

Best wishes Ron!

Special thanks to all of those who assisted Ron during his time of need.

If you are going to swim at Short Course Nationals in May or if you
want to swim one more meet before the season ends, you may want to
consider this meet:

http://www.spma.net/meetforms2007/SCYRegionals2007a.htm

Santa Clarita is a community just north of LA that is hosting the
Southern Pacific Masters Short Course Regionals this year. It should
be a good meet with some top competition from all over Southern
California.

If you are interested in going to this meet, let me know. Pass the
meet URL along to anybody you know who may be interested in this meet.

Thanks!

FYI,

Our sister LMSC in Southern California (SPMA) is going to host a large
meet about four weeks before SCY Nationals. The 2007 SPMA Regional
Championships Short Course Yards will be held on April 20-22, 2007 at
Santa Clarita, which is just outside of LA.

This will be a great tune-up meet for that event or it can be a final
hurrah to the Short Course season. Unlike Nationals, there are no
qualifying times but the competition is tough and the pool will be fast.

Word 'round the campfire is that the meet organizers want to bid on a
masters national meet in the near future. This would be a preview of
the pool and location, which is something to keep in mind.

The meet form will be posted on this site in the near future:

http://www.spma.net/meetforms.htm

Is anybody interested in attending this event? I am planning on going
for the weekend, let me know if anybody else is interested.

Kicks 12-10--one length, then 8-6, 6-4 [for three lengths] @ one arm
pull [slow for feel and form] keeping one arm extended until other

Two lengths with one arm butterfly/dolphin motion, varying pull to 4-

Right now we have a fairly small group. This is going to grow by
several hundred in the next few months.

Why you ask?

Well, we are going to use the group as a tool to communicate with our
members. This will enable us to pass information along faster than
before. Plus, more folks will be able to enjoy features like chat and
discussion threads that they don't even know exist.

Kinda cool but a bit daunting...

In the here and now though, what thoughts are on your minds? Share
them as they relate to swimming, because we should get the
conversation started somehow.

In the future, I will schedule chat sessions but we will need to get
to a critical mass first.

Any thoughts you all want to share?
