Volleyball Vacations has done it again! We have partnered with USV
again to rent the entire club med village in Cancun Yucatan. This
allows us to virtually "own" the beach and it is the biggest beach
that we have ever played on so it is going to be awesome!!! This club
med is beautiful and after 24 million $$$ of renovations this village
is sure to impress everyone.

USV1 was at club med in the Turks and Caicos last fall and was a huge
success. We had over 120 volleyball vacationers on the beach siding
out and learning from our 20 pro coaches. This trip WILL SELL OUT
AGAIN so book now or you will miss out on the biggest trip of the year.

The extra benefit of coming on this trip is that we will once again
hire top professionals and celebrities to teach and coach you in
sports and disciplines like Trapeze/Circus, Tennis, Martial Arts,
Yoga, Water Skiing, Pilates, kite boarding and Zumba. You can play
volleyball everyday or go out and try something else and learn from
the best in that sport or discipline. It really is a unique
opportunity as only the best coaches will be there to teach you and
you can't find that anywhere else on earth. Invite friends that want
to come and try all that is offered or only want to come and enjoy the
parties and entertainment and relax. This village even has a great
kids club for families that don't want to miss out on the action so
this club med really has it all and caters to everyone that deserves a
fantastic vacation.

As an early booking incentive for volleyball vacationers we are able
to offer the trip for only $1499. This is a $200 discount off the
$1699 price that all sports are starting at. More good news is that we
have been able to secure the best building next to the courts and are
holding those for the first 50 booked. These rooms are 30% more
expensive and are very limited. You will be able to finish your last
games and be the first back in your rooms.

Call 877-248-8623 (VOBE) ext. 223 and speak to our Volleyball
Vacations/USV specialist to book your trip and answer all your
questions. If you thought the first trip was good you are going to be
blown away from the additions we have made for this vacation. We can't
wait to show you the best time ever!

Surround yourself with like minded people from all over the world and
meet great friends and create memories that will last a lifetime. We
are fortunate to play such a great sport where it attracts amazing
people that love to share their passion for volleyball and life.

See you in October!!!

Here is a reminder of a clinic I will be doing in Phoenix on April 19-20.

Olympic Gold Medalist and the nation's #1 skills instructor, Pat
Powers, will conduct a 12-hour volleyball clinic at Kingdom Courts on
Saturday & Sunday, April 19-20.

Where: Kingdom Courts
When: April 19-20. Saturday 9AM-4PM, Sunday 9AM-2PM
Age: 12- Adult
Registration fee: $145

Skill level!
We have fun! One hour into the clinic, participants are assigned an
appropriate court determined by age and skill level. The safety and
comfort level of all players is a primary goal of the clinic. The
curriculum has been developed to accommodate intermediate players and
novices. Current skill level is not an issue.

***************FREE T-SHIRT TO ALL PARTICIPANTS**************
*****************Note: 23 spots left for registration *****************

The revolutionary method of skill development is:
*Step one: Theory
*Step two: Demonstration
*Step three: Over-correction of skill
*Step four: Drill using over-correction
*Step five: At the end of the day, we play Survivor. Survivor is a
Queen/King of the court game played with the rules of over-correction.

Hitters!
* Learn how to snap instead of hit a ball
* Learn how to hit out of your approach
* Learn a one step fix to jump higher and hit harder

Setters!
* Learn how to set from your wrist
* Learn how to set past your apex of your jump
* Learn how to set against the flow

Everybody!
1. Learn why you should backspin a volleyball when passing.
2. Learn how to play defense by watching only the hitter.
3. Learn how to time a set; how to time your hitters.
4. Learn how to develop your peripheral vision when hitting.
5. Learn how to make your float serve dance.
6. Learn how to get into position on defense.
7. Learn the rules of non-verbal communication.
8. Learn the rule of ball control.
9. Juniors: Learn how to position yourself for a college scholarship
10. Learn the game in a non-intimidating environment.

Three fundamental team concepts stressed in the clinic are:
1. Playing the game three seconds into the future.
2. Using peripheral vision.
3. Reacting to bodies instead of the ball.

Registration fee for 12 hours of intense instruction, 3-page handout
and a free T-shirt is $145. For more information and to sign-up,

Learn about the Cayman Islands... http://www.caymanislands.ky/

This is the original "volleyball vacations" founded by AVP pro beach champion AL-B Hannemann where his AVP buddies have been playing and partying with volleyball enthusiasts at exotic destinations since 1993. We recently returned from the Turks and Caicos islands Volleyball Vacation in November and had an amazing time. We had a pro coaches ratio of better than 1 pro per 5 volleyball vacationers. AVP stars Casey Jennings, Michelle More, Aaron Wachtfogel, Angela Lewis, Anthony Medel, Mark Williams and Jenelle Koester (to name a few) were all there coaching, playing and partying with the crew of over 100 vacationers that joined us.

Check out www.volleyballvacations.blogspot.com for pictures and more information.

Watch the awesome volleyball vacations videos http://volleyballvacations.com/player.html

We will offer fun volleyball tournaments, pro work outs, clinics, nutrition advice and daily opportunities to compete with and against the pros. All levels are welcome as everyone will play on courts based on their individual skill level. This vacation is an opportunity to be coached by the best players in the world in a non threatening beautiful atmosphere. You will meet new friends from all over the world and share your passion for volleyball. The common theme that everyone talks about after experiencing these vacations is not only the drastic improvement in their volleyball ability but more importantly the new friends and relationships that are made.

**A typical day...9am-1pm Tournament Play, 1-2pm Lunch, 2:30-4:30pm Clinics, 4:30-5:30pm Open play with the Pro Coaches, 6-7:00pm Happy Hour, 7:30-9:30pm Dinner, 10pm-? Evening Entertainment.

Our emphasis is about creating a vacation where the pros are there for you. If you want to battle in tournaments, pick the mind of a champion, do the drills that they do or just hang out and have a beer with your favorite pro, you have the opportunity to do this for an entire week!

*EVERYONE gets volleyball vacations T-shirts and prizes signed by the pros. We don't only reward the tournament winners but make sure that every single person gets something cool to take home with them. Prizes range from Kerri Walsh signed posters and bathing suits to Aaron Wachtfogel and Casey Jennings signed AVP competition shorts.

Some of the activities that are available are Diving, Stingray City/Turtle Farm, Swim with the sharks, Helicopter Tour, Surf Park, Tour of Island: Pedro's Castle, Blow Holes, Mastic Trail, Rum Point, National Gallery, Kayaking, Day Spa's at Ritz, Deep Sea Fishing, Atlantis Submarine, Nautilus Semi-Sub, Parasailing, Jet Ski's/Watersports and shopping in town. No. 9 Cal Volleyball Goes The Distance In 3-2 Thriller Over Arizona

Sophomore outside hitter Hana Cutura drops 25 kills on Wildcats

TUCSON, Ariz. – The No. 9 California volleyball team (16-4, 6-3
Pac-10) defeated the Arizona Wildcats (12-9, 2-7) in five-games (20-30,
23-30, 30-28, 30-22, 15-12) for their sixth consecutive conference and
overall victory. The win marks the second time the Bears have come from
two-games down to win a match, with the first time against Santa Clara.

Senior outside hitter Angie Pressey delivered many critical kills throughout
the match and put up 19 kills overall (8e, 49att) for a .224 hitting
percentage. Sophomore outside hitter Hana Cutura had 25 kills with only 12
errors on 57 attempts for a .228 hitting percentage on the night. Sophomore
libero Kristen Kathan had another strong defensive match, notching 19 digs
for the Bears and senior middle hitter Ellen Orchard put up six total
blocks, one solo.

The Bears led for most of the fifth game until Arizona tied it up at nine
and turned the match into a see-saw competition. After a diving dig by Carli
Lloyd, a pass from Orchard to Pressey gave the Bears a 14-12 lead. With Cat
Dailey serving, Pressey put the final kill of the match through a block
attempt to give the Bears the come-from-behind victory over the Wildcats.

After jumping out to a quick five-point lead in the fourth game, the Bears
found themselves in a battle and trading leads with the Wildcats as the game
wore on. With the score tied at 20, Cal would mount one final push for game
four, taking a small two-point lead at first, and building up to a six-point
advantage off a 5-0 run on Hana Cutura serves that included two straight
Angie Pressey kills on overpasses. An Orchard kill set the Bears up at 29-22
and then a set from Lloyd to Pressey for a tip kill sent the match into a
fifth and deciding game.

The Bears never trailed in game three but received a scare towards the end
of it as Arizona embarked on several small runs. Mid way through the game, a
5-0 Cal run on Angie Pressey serves built an eight-point lead at 22-14 but
the Bears would squander most of it on several broken plays. The Bears
finally got things going at the net in the third with 17 kills (7e, 42att,
.238) and picked up their blocking to hold the Wildcats to .103 (13k, 9e,
39att), taking the match to a fourth game.

Cal led the second game by two and three points until the Wildcats were able
to catch up at 15. Although the Bears improved their hitting from game one
to game two, the .152 mark (14k, 9e, 33att) was not nearly enough to outpace
Arizona’s .343 game two hitting (17k, 5e, 35att). Arizona was nearly
unblockable as Cal was only able to muster two total team blocks in the
second stanza running their total to three as they found themselves down in
an 0-2 deficit for only the third time this season.

The Bears had a difficult time in the first game, giving up a 9-1 run to
Arizona that put them at a 12-4 disadvantage to the home team. Hitting just
.088 in an opening round that included eight hitting errors, the
Bears’ 34 attacks yielded only 11 kills. Taking advantage of Cal
miscues, the Wildcats put up an impressive .467 hitting percentage (17k, 3e,
30att) and added a couple of service aces as they ran away with game one.

The Bears will be on the road again next week as they travel down south to
take on the USC Trojans at the Galen Center on Friday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. and
the UCLA Bruins at Pauley Pavilion on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m.

Stanford Dominates Arizona State for 15th Sweep of the Season
Cardinal finishes the first half of Pac-10 play with an 8-1 conference
record.

Cynthia Barboza tallied 14 kills, Franci Girard added seven kills in seven
tries, the squad hit a season-best .491 and the Stanford women's volleyball
team cruised to its 15th sweep of the season in the home of the Arizona
State Sun Devils 30-21, 30-19, 30-14. Stanford improves to 19-1 with the
win, and wraps up the first half of Pac-10 play with an 8-1 conference
record. Arizona State falls to 11-11, 3-6 Pac-10 with the loss.

In addition to Barboza's team-leading 14 kills, Alix Klineman and Foluke
Akinradewo chipped in 13 apiece. Bryn Kehoe notched 48 assists on the team's
best hitting night of the year, and libero Gabi Ailes led the team with 12
digs. Stanford out-hit ASU, .491 to .139

The Cardinal started strong in game one, taking the first three points and
five of the first six to take an immediate 5-1 lead. The four-point lead
held, and Barboza extended it to five with a kill and a block at 13-8.
Klineman and Barboza ripped consecutive kills at 18-11, jumpstarting a 5-1
run that put the Cardinal up 21-12. Kehoe and Akinradewo teamed up for a
block, Stanford's fifth of the game, to make the gap double-digits at 24-14,
and Akinradewo slammed a ball down the middle on the next point to continue
the Cardinal onslaught. After a trio of Sun Devil points, Akinradewo put up
back-to-back kills to drive the Cardinal to the finish. The junior middle
blocker delivered another kill to give Stanford game point at 29-18, and
Franci Girard finished things off for the Cardinal, 30-21. Akinradewo led
Stanford with six kills and two blocks in the game, and Stanford out-hit
ASU, .457 to .154.

The Cardinal took the first point of game two, but the Sun Devils matched
each Stanford point, and took a brief lead at 3-2. Stanford quickly swung
things back around, and by 9-5, Klineman was capping a series of three
straight Stanford points. Akinradewo gave the Cardinal a five-point lead
with a kill at 13-8, but the Sun Devils rattled off four straight points to
pull back within one, 13-12. Stanford's answer was a 6-2 run that included
two kills by junior opposite Erin Waller and pushed the lead out to 19-14.
The teams matched each other point for point for another brief period, but
the Cardinal hitters were about to catch fire. After an ASU point at 22-18,
Akinradewo, Girard, Barboza and Klineman pounded a series of kills at the
Sun Devils, then turned their offensive momentum into an 8-1 game-capping
run. An Arizona State hitting error gave Stanford game point at 29-19, and
Girard tipped down on overpass to end the game, 30-19. Stanford hit .500 in
the game to ASU's .212 and was led by six kills from Klineman and five kills
from Girard.

Arizona State picked up the opening point in game three, but a 6-1 Stanford
run quickly reversed things. Akinradewo had three more kills before Stanford
reached five points, and a rash of Sun Devil hitting errors quickly allowed
Stanford to jump ahead 10-3. Waller tallied a kill and a block to help
Stanford run further away, and at 14-4 Stanford boasted a double-digit
advantage for the third straight game. Arizona State managed to whittle the
lead to six at 15-9, but Barboza fueled the Stanford offense with five kills
in a nine-point span and helped the team regained the ten point lead and
push further ahead. A back row kill by Cassidy Lichtman extended the lead to
15 at 26-11, and capped an 11-2 Stanford run that put the team ahead by a
commanding margin. A kill by Joanna Evans and a Klineman solo block gave
Stanford game point at 29-13, and a decisive Barboza kill, her 14th of the
match, finished the game 30-14. Stanford out-hit Arizona State, .514 to .070
in the final game.

Stanford remains on the road next week, meeting No. 7 UCLA and No. 4 USC in
back-to-back contests in Los Angeles. The matches are set to begin at 7 p.m.
on Friday and Saturday at Pauley Pavilion and the Galen Center,
respectively.

NO. 9 CALIFORNIA VOLLEYBALL WINS FIFTH STRAIGHT CONFERENCE MATCH

Senior outside hitter Angie Pressey records a new career high with 26 kills

TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 9 California Golden Bears volleyball team
(15-4, 5-3 Pac-10) defeated the Arizona State Sun Devils (11-10, 3-5) in a
four-game match (27-30, 30-26, 30-20, 30-26) tonight at Wells Fargo Arena in
Tempe, Ariz. With the win, the Bears get their fifth straight victory in
Pac-10 conference play and fifth consecutive win overall.

Powered by senior outside hitter Angie Pressey’s career-high 26 kills
(6e, 48att, .417), the Bears came back to win after dropping the first game
to the Sun Devils. Pressey also registered a double-double with 16 digs on
her stat line. Junior outside hitter/middle hitter Morgan Beck also
delivered a solid performance with 13 kills (2e, 31att), hitting .355 on the
night. The Bears put up 14 total team blocks and dug up 64 attacks to hold
the Sun Devils to .174 hitting for the match.

By the start of the fourth game, Pressey was within two of her career mark
for kills in a match and tied that mark at 25 when her kill put the Bears
ahead at 16-15. With a one-point lead at 18-17, the Bears ripped off an
eight-point run and put the Devils on their heels. Using a six-point run,
Arizona State climbed to within two points at 27-25 before an Am’ra
Solomon kill put the Bears back on track. It was Beck’s kill that
completed the match for the Bears and reeled in Cal’s fifth straight
conference victory.

Hitting a scorching .425 (21k, 4e, 40att), Cal took a commanding lead in the
third game at 16-9 and extended to an 11-point advantage at 28-17 behind six
kills from Pressey and five from Beck. With the attack sputtering, it was a
Beck kill that put the Bears in position to take the third game and a 2-1
lead in the match but it was senior middle hitter Ellen Orchard’s
final attack that put the game away for the Bears.

The Bears improved their hitting from the first to the second game, notching
22 kills (7e) on 49 attempts for a .306 hitting percentage. Angie Pressey
provided a huge lift with her team high 13 kills in a game two that ended up
being just as hotly contested as the first. On a steady run, play stalled
for the Sun Devils when freshman outside hitter Sarah Reaves was injured on
a chaotic play at the net. Down two points at 11-13, the Bears went on a
small run and took a 14-13 lead when Orchard won a joust at the net on an
overplayed ball. A Beck and Mindi Wiley block put the Bears up by three at
28-25 but it was two kills by Pressey that would close the second verse for
the Bears, tying the match up at a game a piece.

The first game started off as a tug-of-war with seven ties up to 12. It
looked like the Sun Devils were going to run off with a big lead before
Pressey put a kill straight through a Sara Todorovich block to spur a short
Cal run. Staying at a two-point deficit through most of the game, the Bears
finally broke out when Beck received a perfect set from Lloyd for a kill
from the right side of the court. A 4-1 run of sophomore libero Kristen
Kathan serves put the Bears into a tie at 22 but the Devils poured it on
through the final eight points, putting the game out of reach by
capitalizing on several Cal errors.

The Bears remain in the desert for one more match, traveling up the
Interstate 10 to meet the Arizona Wildcats, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. before
returning home.

No. 3 Cardinal Takes Care of Arizona in Three
Stanford picks up its 14th sweep and improves to 18-1 on the year.

The Stanford women's volleyball team had to battle, but succeeded in picking
up its 14th sweep and 18th win of the season tonight, with a 31-29, 30-24,
30-28 victory over the Arizona Wildcats at the McKale Center in Tucson,
Ariz. The Cardinal improves to 18-1 overall and 7-1 in the Pac-10 with the
win, while the Wildcats fall to 12-8, 2-6 Pac-10.

Junior middle blocker Foluke Akinradewo and junior outside hitter Cynthia
Barboza both recorded double-figure kills in the win, turning in 11 kills
and 10 kills, respectively. Bryn Kehoe added 36 assists to her career tally
(5,059) and Gabi Ailes notched a team-high 12 digs. Arizona was led by the
12 kills of opposite hitter Randy Goodenough.

The teams combined for nine service errors before the midpoint of game one,
and the Stanford hitters struggled to come up with offense in the early
stages of the game. The Cardinal used a pair of Wildcat errors to take a 3-1
lead, but Arizona turned things around and took its first lead at 7-6.
Stanford fell behind by as much as two, but Wildcat miscues and kills by
Akinradewo kept Stanford in the game. Alix Klineman drilled a ball to the
back of the court to take the Stanford lead back at 20-19, and the freshman
followed with an ace to give Stanford back its initial two-point advantage.
The Wildcats would take the lead three more times before things were all
said and done, but Kehoe stepped up and served three straight points and the
Cardinal finally went up 28-26 on a Barboza kill from the back row. Arizona
came back to tie at 28, and, after the Cardinal's first game point try,
again at 29, but a Barboza kill gave Stanford its final game point at 30-29,
and a Wildcat hitting error ended the game. Stanford hit just .219 with 12
kills, while Arizona hit .278 with 17 kills. The Wildcats missed 10 serves
in game one alone, however, and the Cardinal came away with the 31-29 win.
Barboza and Klineman led the Cardinal with three kills apiece.

The Cardinal again seemed to be missing its fire at the beginning of game
two, falling behind 4-2 before finally finding its offensive rhythm. Barboza
ripped a kill to tie the game at six, and Kehoe served two aces and five
straight points to put Stanford ahead 10-6. The Wildcats were able to crawl
within one three times, and finally tied the game up at 17. Stanford had
finally had enough, however, and senior Franci Girard helped Stanford pound
four kills in the next five points and take a lead it would never
relinquish. The Cardinal took a three-point lead at 21-18 on a Barboza kill
and it stuck, with a Klineman solo block extending it to four at 27-23.
After one last Arizona point, Stanford rattled off the last three points of
the game and cruised to the game two win. After Girard and Erin Waller put
up a block to give Stanford game point, Klineman put up a solo block, her
third block of the night, to finish things off, 30-24. Stanford out-hit
Arizona .325 to .150 and was led by Akinradewo's four kills.

Stanford kept its momentum in game three, taking the first three points and
then racing out to a 7-1 advantage on an ace by Barboza. A kill by Klineman
and a Wildcat error pushed the lead out to 9-2, then 10-3, but the home team
battled back. The Wildcats went on a 9-2 run and pulled into a tie at 12 on
a Cardinal attack error. The game went into six more ties before Arizona
finally strung a series of points together and took its first lead. A
Stanford service error started a 5-0 Wildcat run that left the Cardinal at a
24-20 deficit. The Cardinal answered with a run of its own, however, using
an ace by Cassidy Lichtman and a Klineman kill to knot the score at 24. From
there, the Wildcats put together another rally, and threatened with a 28-25
lead. The Cardinal focused on the finish, however, and overpowered the
Wildcats with five straight points to take the game. Girard gave Stanford
game point with a kill from the middle, and an Arizona error sealed the
Stanford sweep with a 30-28 game three win. Stanford out-hit Arizona .204 to
.146 in the game.

Stanford was held below .250 hitting for the third consecutive match and
just the fourth time this season. The Cardinal also held its 17th opponent
to a hitting percentage below .250, however.

Stanford now heads north to Tempe to face the Arizona State Sun Devils
tomorrow night. The match, set for 7 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena, wraps up the
first half of Pac-10 play for both teams.

PRESS RELEASE 29.07.2007

AMERICANS SWEEP SWATCH-FIVB WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP GOLD MEDALS

Gstaad, Switzerland, July 29, 2007 - The only thing that Todd Rogers
mishandled here Sunday was the opening of a champagne bottle after he and
Phil Dalhausser won the men’s finale to give the United States a sweep of
the gold medals this weekend at the 2007 SWATCH-FIVB World Championships
powered by 1to1 energy.

After eliminating reigning Olympic champions Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos
of Brazil in the morning’s first semi-final match, Dalhausser and Rogers
joined compatriots Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh as USA gold medal
winners this weekend by defeating Dmitri Barsouk and Igor Kolodinsky of
Russia 21-16 and 21-14 in the 45-minute finale.

In addition to sharing the US$60,000 first-place prize in the $1-million
“Beach Volleyball Bash” in the Swiss Alps, Dalhausser and Rogers will
benefit from the 1,000 points towards qualifying for the Beijing 2008
Olympics. A tandem’s best eight finishes on the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour
through July 20, 2008 will count towards qualifying for the 24-team field.

“This weekend was about Beach Volleyball, but not just about Beach
Volleyball,” said the 33-year Rogers, who was named the SWATCH most
outstanding player for the SWATCH-FIVB World Championships. “For me, these
experiences are what I will remember. It not only is the competition, but
it is about the fans in the stands, the beautiful surroundings and the
overall atmosphere of good feelings generated this weekend.”

Rogers also added, that his partner “was the real outstanding player for the
event. I bet Phil that he would be the SWATCH top player for the event
since this was a homecoming for him and his family. I share this award with
him as he is becoming one of the great players in the world. I am lucky to
have him as a partner.”

Sunday’s title was the second SWATCH gold medal for the Americans, who won
for the first time on the FIVB tour last August in Austria where Dalhausser
and Rogers defeated Emanuel and Ricardo for the title. The next stop on the
international circuit is next week in Austria where Dalhausser and Rogers
will be defending their Klagenfurt title as the reigning SWATCH-FIVB World
Champions.

“It is a tremendous feeling to win this title in front of my parents and
relatives,” said the 27-year old Dalhausser, who lived a year in Switzerland
before moving to the United States with his Swiss mother and German father.
“We played two quality opponents today. Except for the second set against
the Brazilians, we had a great day.”

Rogers and Dalhausser advanced to the gold medal match by posting a 21-16,
13-21 and 19-17 win in 68 minutes over Emanuel and Ricardo, who captured the
2003 SWATCH-FIVB World Championships in Rio de Janeiro before claiming
Olympic gold the next year in Athens.

Barsouk and Kolodinsky, who shared $45,000 for second-place as the first
Russian men’s or women’s team to play in a SWATCH-FIVB World Tour gold medal
match in the 20-plus-year history of the International circuit, advanced to
the title match with a 21-13 and 21-19 win in 45 minutes over Andrew Schacht
and Joshua Slack of Australia.

In the bronze medal match, Schacht and Slack ended Brazil’s run of men’s
medals at the SWATCH-FIVB World Championships as the Australians upset
Emanuel and Ricardo 21-17 and 21-19 win in 42 minutes to capture the $35,000
third-place prize. The Brazilians split $28,000 for fourth-place.

The eighth of 13 double gender stops on the 2007 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour, the
women’s 2007 SWATCH-FIVB World Championships ended Saturday with reigning
Olympic champions May-Treanor and Walsh defeating Jia Tian and Jie Wang of
China 21-16 and 21-10 for their third-straight world title.

Hey fellow volleyball fanatics! My name is Nicole Nilson and I play
year around/every surface volleyball in the Atlanta, GA area. I work
with/for Pro
Beach Volleyball Player AL-B Hannemann and his sports travel
companies "Volleyball Vacations" and "Ulitimate Sports Vacations".
In February I went on my first "Volleyball Vacation" cruise where we
had amazing clinics and play in Jamaica, Grand Turks, Cozumel and
Grand Cayman. I have been playing this game for 25 years and I must
say that I saw more improvement of my skills and learned more about
this game in that week than I have over the last 15 years!...And got
to play in beautiful settings to boot!
AL-B has been running "Volleyball Vacations" for 12 years, and if you
are a volleyball enthusiast like me, you will agree that there is
simply no better vacation to take! I don't know about you, but a
perfect vacation to me is being on the beach, playing ball until I
drop and then having a few (OK, maybe 10?!) drinks and some sort of
fun at night! However, I find that when I try to get a pick-up game
at the beach, there are usually nothing but "BBQ ballers"
available.....and that is just not the same....or even fun.
Well, AL-B has taken care of that with his new venture "Ultimate
Sports Vacations". From October 27-November 3rd we will be taking
over the entire club med village in Turks and Caicos. The best and
most unique thing about this trip is that it will include multiple
other sports/disciplines that will make up the rest of the village.
That means that because we "own" the village there will be nothing
but other like-minded athletic adults to play and party with!
For the volleyball villagers, our day will be a mixture of clinics
and tournament play with AVP pro's. Last trip the pro's included
Sinjin Smith, "Team Gorgeous" Michelle Moore and Suzanne Stonebarger,
Gold medalist Eric Fonoimoana and of course, AL-B.
They have also lined up amazing nightly entertainment, a huge
Halloween Bash and an end-of-week multiple sports village Olympics.
This is an all-inclusive vacation package, which means that all food,
drinks (yes, even top-shelf liquors), coaching and entertainment is
included in the price!!!!(Yes, that means once you get there, you
won't need to spend another penny!!!) For the volleyball portion the
cost is $1550 for the land portion. We have found a very cheap
flights recently.... for example $356.20 out of Atlanta this week.
If you have a friend
that would love to go but doesn't play ball, they can come for $1300
and get a taste of all the sports/disciplines that USV is offering,
or just hang out and enjoy all that club med has to offer.
I can say first hand that there is no better way to improve your game
than to be coached by the pro's. As they have told me time and time
again, "It doesn't matter how many times you play, the only way you
will get better and really improve your game is to run drills". It's
true!
I am hoping to get a great turnout from FUN people from all over the
country who love to socialize and play alot of ball!! You can go to
www.ultimatesportsvacations.com to read up on all the sports offered,
and see a schedule of events for the week. To read up on AL-B go to
www.alhannemann.com , www.volleyballvacations.com or
www.myspace.com/alhannemann . Please also feel free to contact me at
bb2nicole@... or 404-423-9973.
Hope to see you on the beach!!!!

The APVL is planning a Las Vegas Tryout in June, 2007. We would like
to draw players from Nevada, Utah, and Arizona. We will have a site,
but would like to find a point man to help us organize. The
following went out to our mailing list on our recent past events:

We would like to thank all of you that made our May 12th
Tryout/Practice a great success. It was great fun to watching Ryan
Jay Owens (Greece), Andy Tomkinson (UCSB), Brennan Prahler (UCLA),
Donny Harris (UCSB), Mackay Wilson (BYU), Tanner Sutherland
(Pepperdine), and 25 others soar to new heights. It was a great
event that will help grow the American Pro Volleyball League into
something special. Victor Batista (BYU), Casey Patterson (BYU),
Lance Walker (Pepperdine), Scott Faust (UH), Dan Conners (UCLA),
Chris Komer (LBSU), Matt Komer (UCLA) and others are "flying" in on
the 20th for our next event. It should be monstrous! You'll won't
want to miss it.

That's this Sunday, May 20th at Irvine Valley College, in Irvine, CA,
from 8:30 am-2:00 pm and at our new Chicago Area site at Carthage
College, 2000 Alford Park Drive, Kenosha, WI, 53140, from 5pm-8pm..
(For details see articles in our May Issue of Pro Volleyball News).
And, we'll have more throughout 2007, leading to our inaugural 5 team
league in Jan, Feb, and March of 2008. The ultimate goal is to
create a group of 36 players that will become the core of 3 APVL
teams. These 3 teams will play in the inaugural 5 team American Pro
Volleyball League in Jan, Feb, and March of 2008. The other 2 teams
will sponsored by the USA National Training Team. In addition, we
hope to draw AVP players, before and after their tour. As with many
of our events, the 20th will be covered with multiple broadcast
cameras.

These tryout/tourneys are invitation only, and if you can hang with
the best volleyball players in America, let us know by registering on
our website: www.goAPVL.com and we may invite you too. There are a
few slots still open. And we may be coming to a location near you. We
are not prepared to hold an open nationwide tryout yet, as our
organizational efforts are taking all our energies and resources and
are still far from complete, but I've been asked by some of the
players to organize practices and this is what we've come up with.
Also, we have updated our May Pro Volleyball News online newsletter.
Please go to our site: www.goAPVL.com and check it out for more
details about the APVL. We will keep updating weekly as more
information becomes available. We consider it a work in progress.

Thanks again,
Ray Goto

Lambert, Metzger must fight back again
Last week's champs lose early in Glendale
By Monique Moyal / AVP.com

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Desert temperatures and the competitive level stayed high
on Friday, when many new partnerships moved on to the next round and avoided
second-round double-elimination.

Securing one of the earliest wins of the day from the Contender's Bracket,
No. 16 John Mayer and Matt Prosser sent home 18th-seeded Brent Doble and Ty
Loomis, 21-13 and 21-16. Despite an early loss to powerhouse and top-seeded
Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers (21-14 and 21-19), Mayer and Prosser were
able to bounce back and get back to winning matches.

"I think I'm the smallest guy out here, so I gotta have a big guy," Mayer
said of his new partner. "I'd like to keep playing with him. I think it's
tough being a little guy, there's not a lot of big guys, but once you get
one, you gotta just battle with the guy you got."

Against Dalhausser/Rogers, the lower-seeded pair put together an impressive
second game. While an early run secured the first set for Dalhausser and
Rogers, Mayer and Prosser tried to emulate that move.

Mayer and Prosser maintained the lead, until Dalhausser tied the score at
7-7 with a major block. They managed to keep ahead for the rest of the
match, but Mayer and Prosser were right on their heels. With the score at
9-8 in favor of the No. 1 tandem, Mayer and Prosser kept within one or two
points for the rest of the match before succumbing.

Another new, albeit temporary partnership, No. 12 Aaron Watchfogel and Kevin
Wong, also found early success this weekend. Wong still held up on his own
even without Karch Kiraly behind him.

During the second round of the Winner's Bracket, Watchfogel and Wong pulled
off one of the few upsets on the day, when they sent fifth-seeded Casey
Jennings and Mark Williams to the Contender's Bracket after an 18-21, 21-17
and 15-10 decision.

Watching on the sidelines of that match were Wong's brother Scott and
Watchfogel's regular partner Austin Rester.

"It's funny to watch him [play with someone else], just to see the things he
does," said Rester. "It helps me; when we play together I'm blocking so I
can't see what he's doing behind me. So I can watch here what he does behind
me and appreciate what he does, and see what I can do better as a blocker
when he runs defense. So I'm just kind of watching and supporting, too."

In their third match of the day, Watchfogel and Wong continued their tear
and cruised through yet another victorious match, defeating fourth-seeded
Matt Fuerbringer and Sean Scott. If the pair loses two straight matches, the
worst they could finish is in fifth place.

In the Contender's Bracket, Rester and Jose Loiola continued on as projected
with the 17th seed. They walk home from Arizona with a 17th-place finish,
after falling, 21-15, 21-14, to No. 15 Albert Hannemann and Ed Ratledge.

"For me, it's kind of more or less a free tournament, because I'm replacing
a 17th [seed] which is kind of a free roll for me," said Rester.

Joining Rester and Loiola with a 17th-place finish are No. 19 Dain
Blanton/Jason Lee and No. 14 Paul Baxter/Canyon Ceman.

Also moving into the Contender's Bracket and waiting to resume play on
Saturday are third-seeded Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal, who were on the
wrong end of a 21-19, 21-18 loss to No. 6 Dax Holdren and Jeff Nygaard.

In Huntington, No. 1 Mike Lambert and Stein Metzger showed that they could
lose their first match of the weekend and still win the tournament outright.
They will have to win everything from here on out to do so again, as
10th-seeded John Hyden and Brad Keenan dropped the pair into the Contender's
Bracket, 21-19, 21-18.

The Wildcat's meow: University of Arizona alumnus Matt Olson and partner
Jason Ring teamed up for the No. 8 seed in the state of Olson's alma mater
and defeated an evenly-matched team in ninth-ranked Nick Lucena and Will
Strickland (21-14, 21-13).

During the second round of Winner's Bracket play, Olson and Ring came close
to pushing a third game against Dalhausser and Rogers, but were swept into
the Contender's Bracket after a score of 21-16 and 21-17. They will now try
to work their way back into the Final Four with one loss under their belts
this weekend.

"I like being the underdog, for sure," said Olson. "It feels better kind of
going into it expecting to lose, if you will, because we play looser and my
partner and I we kind of play loose when we're in the zone and we can
compete against anybody."

"There's so many upsets out here right now it's anybody's game and so I
think everybody's really getting that feeling and we definitely feel that we
can do it too," he said optimistically heading into Saturday play.

Contender's Bracket action will kick off the day at 1 p.m. EDT on Saturday.

Glendale main draw preview
Top teams look to continue winning ways
By Monique Moyal / AVP.com

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- After battling through 100 degree weather in the desert
sands of the AVP Sanderson Ford Glendale Open presented by Bud Light, four
men's and four women's qualifying teams will move on to Friday's main draw
action.

Who will take it?

For the men, three teams have established themselves in the final round of
play week-in and week-out. Now that Mike Lambert and Stein Metzger have
claimed their first title of 2007, they still hold on to the No. 2 seed and
will look to do the same thing in Arizona.

Despite losing in the semifinals last weekend, top-seeded Todd Rogers and
Phil Dalhausser are $100,000 richer after taking the Jose Cuervo Triple Gold
Crown series in overall points. They will look to get back on the winning
track with hopes of starting another title streak.

And finally, No. 3 Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal have seen three finals this
year without taking a single title. They will be right in the thick of
things here in Glendale and hoping to follow the example set by
Metzger/Lambert last weekend and win their first 2007 AVP Open.

Steady as she goes

With only one more win this weekend, Misty May-Treanor could have a share in
Holly McPeak's glory as the two will both boast the most beach titles for a
woman with 72. May-Treanor and partner Kerri Walsh (No. 1 seed) have gotten
back into their game, especially with the assistance of a new coach. They
will look to make three a charm, with another consecutive victory this
weekend.

Right below the top-ranked duo sits No. 2 Nicole Branagh and Elaine Youngs,
who have been to every final round in 2007. They will try for their second
victory of 2007, having already proved themselves against May-Treanor and
Walsh in Miami to open this year's AVP Crocs Tour.

Learn by imitation

While Huntington Beach, Calif., saw improved success for two teams with
former partners -- No. 10 John Hyden and Brad Keenan and 16th-seeded John
Mayer and Matt Prosser -- another set of partners has emulated that move
this weekend. Aaron Watchfogel will team up with Kevin Wong for the No. 12
seed, moving Watchfogel up and Wong down a few places. That means, missing
from weekend play will be Karch Kiraly, who closed out his career in Arizona
in the 2006 season. He will still be appearing in Glendale, working with
media all weekend long.

Watchfogel's former partner, Austin Rester joins Jose Loiola to maintain the
former pair's No. 17 seed, putting Loiola up two slots from the opening of
play in Huntington.

Time will tell

First round play will kick off Friday and begins in waves from 11 a.m. EDT
to 12:30 p.m. EDT.

This weekend's tournament is different from Huntington in that the top seeds
will get a first-round bye. The second round of play in the Winner's Bracket
will begin at 12:30 p.m. EDT, with May-Treanor/Walsh for the women and
Rogers/Dalhausser for the men waiting for the winner of the No. 16/17 match
up.
