U.S. Open Wallyball championships in Detroit March 11-14. There's a

volleyball history have joined the AUWP to help grow wallyball and I
truly hope that you will come to Detroit to join in the excitement.

Unquestionably, the greatest player in the history of the sport of
indoor and outdoor volleyball, Karch Kiraly joins the AUWP Wallyball
Advisory Staff
When you think of the greatest living sports legends, some names that
quickly come to mind are Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali, Barry Bonds,
Wayne Gretzky and Dan Marino. Karch Kiraly (pronounced KEY-RYE) is
to the sport of volleyball what these modern day icons represent in
their respective sports. "Having Karch Kiraly join the advisory staff
of the Association of United Wallyball Players (AUWP), the official
governing body of the sport of wallyball, is one of the crowning
moments in the history of the sport," states Joe Garcia, inventor of
wallyball and Executive Director of the AUWP. "One of our primary
goals is to develop a grass roots program to grow the sport. Karch
also understands that the similarities the two sports enjoy - such as
basic volleyball rules, ball handling techniques and the availability
wallyball/racquetball courts - can help both sports work together
more effectively to attract new players and help them improve their
skills."
Wallyball is a version of volleyball played on a racquetball court
with 2, 3 or 4 players per team. Play and scoring are similar to
volleyball, however the side walls become part of the playing area
and contacting two or more walls constitutes a fault or side-out.
There are several million players worldwide who play wallyball in
health clubs, YMCA's, and college intramural programs.
Karch Kiraly brings an illustrious career and credentials to the
AUWP. He graduated from UCLA as a four time All-American and led the
Bruins to three NCAA Championships with an incredible won-loss record
of 124-5. He is the first player in Olympic history to win three gold
medals in volleyball and was named one of America's 100 Greatest
Living Olympians in 1996. Following his Chicago Open title in 1999,
Karch became the winningest beach volleyball player of all time with
his 140th career title in 280 career starts. In December 2000 Karch
was named Men's Player of the 20th Century by the International
Volleyball Federation. Karch continues to break his own records on
the beach, has published several books, is a television commentator,
sits on the steering committee of the USOC Summer Sports Summit and
oversees the Karch Kiraly Scholarship Fund, awarding scholarships
annually to graduating high school volleyball players.
"Wallyball and volleyball skills compliment one another in many ways.
I enjoy the pace the close proximity of the court lends to the game
and the quick reactions needed to play shots off the walls," Karch
says. "I'm also impressed with the high school and collegiate
intramural wallyball programs the AUWP is developing. The number of
high school volleyball programs has dwindled in recent years and the
AUWP intramurals will allow boys and girls the opportunity to
participate and to improve their skills."
The AUWP the official governing body of wallyball, is a 501(c)(3)
nonprofit association responsible for developing the sport's first
standardized set of playing rules and sanctioning criteria for
official amateur league, tournament and recreational play. To learn
more about the sport of wallyball and the AUWP visit www.auwp.org .

Hello,
I am interested as well in finding an Open Gym as well. I travel to
Arizona throughout the year, and will be there in mid November.
Seems like I will be missing out on both ASU and UofA vball teams
that weekend.
Any open gyms or sports bars that one would recommend?

4 Days Till the First Anunual Volleypalooza to benifit Phoenix
Childerns Hospital
This is a reminder of the upcoming Volleypalooza event this weekend.
The tournament currently has over 30 corporate sixes teams
registered, but they are in need of men's and women's twos. The
tournament begins at 11am on Saturday, October 25, 2003 at Steele
Indian School Park. It will be an all day grass volleyball tournament
and they
will be playing old style rules. It will be around 85 degrees for the
high on Saturday and the park is excellent & centrally located. There
will also be an after-party with plenty of festive food and drinks
and a live concert featuring local bands!! All of the proceeds from
Volleypalooza go to the Phoenix Children's
Hospital.
The entry fee is $25 per person and guarantees you 3 volleyball
games, a free event t-shirt and admission to the after-party. You can
also register the day of the event, but you will not receive the t-
shirt.
Come and enjoy a full day of food, fun, music, and volleyball in
midtown Phoenix. There will be plenty to do and lots to see!
Remember, the event is for a great cause and all of the proceeds from
Volleypalooza go to Phoenix Children's Hospital. For more information
contact Josh Becker at volleypalooza@.... You can
also visit
wwww.volleyballarizona.org to download an event flyer and obtain
additional information.
If we have a good turn out this year with 2 man teams I can see a lot
more attention paid to real volleyball next year. This tournament is
going to be annually and has a huge potential because where else is
it 85 degrees in the end of October?
Please pass on this information to every volleyball player you know!!!
You can call AZ Sky this is a club. They are having try outs on Nov. 1st the phone number is 602-547-9432b or check them out on line at www.eteamz.com/AZSky. Or if you are looking for a non club team try calling Phoenix Parks and Recreation. I coach for a Peoria Parks and recreation team. It is not as competitive.

I have some HUGE news about the Club Med Turks and Caicos trip on November 1-8th. Club med is now giving VOBE (the exclusive booking agency) a discounted rate. I have NEVER been offered a discount before for any group and this is substantial. Yesterday the rate was $1368 for land. Today it is only $1068. This also includes all volleyball training and all DRINKS. That is $300 off the regular price that has never been discounted in 7 years doing these trips. Somehow VOBE was able to get them to drop the rate for any future bookings on a very limited basis. This offer is for minimum availability and can end at any time. Many of you that have been contacting me about this trip should take advantage of this rare offer. I am sure it won't last too long so please call VOBE at 800-567-6617 to book now. This trip will never be this cheap again. Eric Fonoimoana will be joining us too!
I will also be in Kent, Connecticut this weekend for Club Getaways third annual AVP volleyball weekend. Big news about this trip too!! Dave Blickstein (DB) may be able to get you to go at a 2 for 1 offer. Pay half to come out and enjoy clinics and enjoy great nightlife on this beautiful resort. Email DB at db@... for info about this great offer. He works there some weekends and has some serious pull so email him to find out how he does it.

The Jayo invitational was held September 27th on the Hudson River Park Trust's Pier 25 in Manhattan. Olympic Gold Medallists Eric Fonoimoana and Dain Blanton along with World #1 Women's player Kerri Walsh, professionals Albert Hannemann, Cassey Jennings, Jeff Nygaard and Chip McCaw headlined an allstar cast of volleyball Olympians, and celebrity guests. Players battled it out on the 'beaches of Manhattan New York' to raise money and awareness for the Foundation for the Advancement of Autistic Persons and the Dig for Kids Foundation. Over 100 kids were there for the morning clinics and then the adults came and battled in a 6 person format tournament. The finals were exciting as pros Eric Fonoi, Kerri Walsh and Jayo Olive defeated Casey Jennings and Albert Hannemann's team in an exciting 27-25 overtime victory. It was a great event and will be even bigger next year. Thanks to all of you that came and helped out and enjoyed the festivities.
Hope to see you all on the beach!

Hey, my name is Josh and I'm 24. I've been playing outdoor vball
with a group of people I met through work. I've been playing with
them for about 3 months, 3 nights a week. I'm now looking to play
with more competitive people. I have very little experience playing
organized vball. My biggest interest is playing outdoor doubles, but
anything more competitive would be good. I would like to know about
other opportunities to play in Tucson, anything from some motivated
people getting together to play doubles, to pick-up games, to league
play, to tournaments. I have know idea what exists in Tucson for
vball. If you know of where to play or would like to get some people
together to play, let me know. Thanx -Josh
