NO. 11 CAL VOLLEYBALL WINS AT ARIZONA, 3-1
TUCSON, ARIZ. — Bolstered by a balanced offensive attack, the No. 11-ranked
California volleyball team defeated Arizona, 3-1 (33-31, 30-25, 26-30,
30-20), Friday night at the McKale Center in Tucson, Ariz. The Golden Bears,
led by 17 kills apiece from junior Angie Pressey and freshman Hana Cutura,
improved to 16-5 overall and 5-5 in the Pac-10. The Wildcats dropped to
10-12 overall and 1-9 in conference play.
It was the first time since 1991 that Cal had defeated Arizona twice in one
season, as the Bears topped the Wildcats, 3-1, Sept. 30 at Haas Pavilion.
Besides Pressey and Cutura, junior Ellen Orchard added a career-high 16
kills and had a team-best six block assists. Sophomore Morgan Beck added 15
kills and senior libero Jillian Davis had a match-high 19 digs. Davis is now
only five digs (1,598) short of becoming Cal’s all-time leader in career
digs, surpassing Lisa Arce’s 1,602 digs from 1987-90. Senior setter Samantha
Carter also performed well, notching 52 assists and a season-high 14 digs.
Arizona was paced by Whitney Dosty’s 14 kills, and Brittany Leonard added 17
digs for the Wildcats.
The Bears will next travel to Arizona State, Saturday, Oct. 28, for a 7 p.m.
match at Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe.
