How to build a Website for nothing   Topic List   < Prev Topic  |  Next Topic >

Most will agree that websites, or some form of Internet presence, are
absolutely critical for all curling clubs but especially those aspiring
to build their memberships. For many clubs, websites now function as an
important way to provide club information to attract new curlers while
communicating with current members and volunteers.

I have found a no cost method (if time doesn't count) of creating a
basic website for any club, new or existing to get started.

I have created two websites through the different blog creating sites.
One is using Blogger.com at http://stlcurling.blogspot.com/ (my attempt
at establishing curling in the State of Missouri.) and the other a
abandoned attempt on Wordpress.com at http://kccurling.wordpress.com/

Each website explains how to set up your site quite thoroughly and you
should have a basic framework built in Short Order.

Neither is a panacea to creating a website and you will find some
flexibility and shortcomings.

The key thing to remember is that once the site is established, many
members in your club will be able to author content on a what you see is
what you get (WYSIWYG) format. Taking most of the code behind the
website out of the equation. However, a little code knowledge will
allow you to get more out of your blog. then a mere template.

Another great feature is that anyone can subscribe to your website and
get information delivered to their feed/reader as you post the info on
the website. They can also leave comments and question after any
post/article.

The main downside to a Blog is that you don't own your website. Unless
you backup your content, it could potentially vanish (though unlikely).

Both platforms will allow you put your website on your own domain
(www.youclub.com)I believe but I have not done that yet and we are
talking about a free website for now.

Check out all the crazy information I put on the St. Louis Curling Club
Website at http://stlcurling.blogspot.com/ and Feel free to post any
question you may have here for others to learn as well.
