Kranji pile up this morning   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #10036 of 12945 |
Hi all

How strange that 10 minutes before the Great Kranji Pileup of 2007, I had a
conversation with Andrew where he mentioned that today's ride was the best he'd
seen in a while. Everybody was riding abreast of each other in pairs, lots of
good calling and plenty of early morning talk and banter. Then, like a bat out
of hell, comes this bus, hurtling down the hill...

It just goes to prove that we can do all the right things, yet still be at the
mercy of recklessness. I thank our lucky stars that it seems no one was
seriously hurt. My handlebar was a bit mangled up and I decided, for the second
time within 5 minutes, to do a 180 degree turn, albeit voluntarily this time and
limp home.

Crashes are, unfortunately, a possibility when riding on the road; in a bunch or
riding solo. It doesn't matter where you ride. I just find it a bit ironic that
a ride that was one of the safest was so rudely interrupted. It does rattle you
every time it happens. Nobody likes the taste of tarmac and we all definitely
don't like the bill from the bike shop the week after either.

What I did find encouraging though, was the camaraderie and care everybody took
to make sure all were safe. If you have to be in a big pile up, then there is
no better than an ANZA one.

Cheers Rene

So you're saying it was Andrew's fault! Kidding... I do have a couple of suggestions though for the Neo Tiew bit: if the pack is bigger than, say, 10 pairs,...
