By BARRY WILNER
AP Football Writer
April 27, 2002

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) -- All is well for Wayne Chrebet these days.
He's healthy. He enjoys coming to work. And he beams whenever his 5-
month-old infant son, Lukas, is mentioned.
The fact that the New York Jets' most popular player is heading into
the final year of his contract is, well, a matter for another time.

Not that Chrebet wouldn't mind a new deal that likely would keep him
with the Jets for the rest of his NFL career. It simply isn't of the
highest priority right now.

``It's not like I won't be well-compensated this year,'' Chrebet said
Saturday at the team's minicamp.

Chrebet will earn $4.5 million in 2002, his eighth pro season after
being discovered as an undrafted free agent by then-coach Rich
Kotite -- one of the few positive aspects of the Kotite regime.

``A longterm deal pretty much would be my last one and it would be
nice to finish where I started and hopefully end up being in a Super
Bowl or two here.

``Not many people get a chance to play their entire career with one
team and it would be nice if that could happen.''

Coach Herman Edwards sounds as if it will happen. The Jets simply had
other priorities this offseason, including replacing six starters on
defense -- two cornerbacks, a safety, an outside linebacker and two
tackles -- and retooling the offensive line. They also have several
other impending free agents, including All-Pro center Kevin Mawae and
rising star guard Randy Thomas.

``The feeling of the organization is we want Wayne to be here and we
will try to do everything to keep him here,'' Edwards said. ``I think
he wants to be here. I expect it will get done.''

Most Jets fans wouldn't want to imagine Chrebet in another uniform.
He has been among their most popular players since coming out of
Hofstra, the site of the team's headquarters, as well as one of the
most productive. A few years ago, his No. 80 jersey was the second-
biggest seller behind Brett Favre's.

In seven seasons, he has 456 receptions for 5,835 yards and 30
touchdowns. Although early on he was not a big part of the new
offense Edwards installed last year, Chrebet closed strong. He caught
56 passes for a 13.4 average, but just one touchdown.

``How many guys have caught 500 passes before they are 30?'' the 28-
year-old Chrebet said. ``I thought about that and it's pretty
interesting.

``But it doesn't have to do with statistics. It's being a leader,
helping the young guys, blocking downfield. That's where I get my
real joy playing football.''

Could he get as much joy elsewhere? Even, perhaps, in the same
stadium, but for the other tenant at the Meadowlands?

``Honestly, everyone knows I was a Giants fan growing up,'' he said.
``People are like, `Are you going to go to the Giants?'

``I don't know what I am going to do. I live in New Jersey. I want to
stay close to home. I'd like to be here.''

I can't wait for the season to start. The past couple seasons we've gone from
9-7 to 10-6, and now I expect to go 11-5. That's all I'm gonna say. I liked the
draft picks for the most part, and even though we're still a "small" team these
guys can get it done.

We don't go to Chrebet enough, only in big game situations. Whenever we need him
to play big, he does. He makes some of the greatest catches I've ever seen, and
if we'd throw to him more often in every single game of the season we'd win more
of them. But whatever, I guess that's up to the coaches and offensive
coordinator to decide.

J-E-T-S Jets! Jets! Jets! (yes, I am insane)

Round 1

Bryan Thomas DE, Alabama-Birmingham, 6-4, 266. The Jets desperately
need pass-rush help and Thomas should give it to them. He is
exceptionally fast - perhaps even faster than John Abraham, with
better moves - and his presence puts Shaun Ellis immediately on
notice that his job is in jeopardy. The Jets hope to eventually
bookend Thomas with Abraham and, perhaps, have Ellis rush the
quarterback from inside on passing downs. The only question is his
run-stopping ability.

Round 2

Jon McGraw S, Kansas State, 6-3, 208. He is big enough and fast
enough to provide depth at both safety positions, and is
exceptionally smart, but his sterling qualities have not translated
into on-field playmaking. McGraw has just nine career interceptions,
but the Jets think he has a big upside and may eventually compete at
free safety with Damien Robinson. He will provide immediate help on
special teams.

Round 3

Chris Baker TE, Michigan State, 6-3, 258. Will provide depth behind
Anthony Becht. He is regarded as a good receiver who runs well after
the catch. Despite good size, he does minimal blocking and one
scouting report said he looks lackadaisical.

Round 4

Alan Harper DT, Fresno State, 6-1, 280. He probably slipped this far
because of poor 40-yard-dash speed (5.29 seconds). But the Jets were
in desperate need of a defensive tackle, and Harper has played the
three-technique position all his life. He has an explosive burst to
penetrate the backfield, and as a senior had 12 sacks, a lot for a
defensive tackle.

Round 5

Jonathan Goodwin C/G, Michigan, 6-3, 318. Can play four positions on
the offensive line, including center, but the Jets view him as a
guard. That could be important after the 2002 season, because right
guard Randy Thomas is in the final year of his contract.

Jets QB has benign tumor removed from foot
By RICHARD ROSENBLATT
AP Sports Writer
March 27, 2002

NEW YORK (AP) -- Vinny Testaverde had surgery to remove a benign
tumor from his right foot Wednesday, sidelining the New York Jets
quarterback until training camp in July. ADVERTISEMENT

The tumor, described by Jets coach Herman Edwards as ``about an inch
big,'' was discovered on a bone two weeks ago. Surgery was performed
by Dr. John Healey, the chief of orthopedic services at Sloan-
Kettering Memorial Hospital.

``He came out of surgery fine,'' Edwards said Wednesday during a
conference call. ``We'll be waiting for him to be fully recovered and
ready for training camp.''

Edwards said Testaverde will be on crutches for a month, then begin
rehab, take part in meetings and hopefully be ready when camp opens
July 27.

``We won't rush anything with Vinny,'' Edwards said, adding that
backup Chad Pennington will take most of the snaps during the team's
minicamp next month and until Testaverde returns. ``Vinny's a veteran
guy, in tremendous shape and he takes care of himself.''

The 38-year-old Testaverde threw for 2,752 yards and 15 touchdowns in
leading the Jets to the playoffs last season. There had been some
question whether he would be back with the team this season because
of salary cap concerns. But the Jets have given every indication they
plan to keep Testaverde.

Edwards said offensive coordinator Paul Hackett and Pennington will
set up quarterback meetings at Testaverde's home while he recovers.

The Jets have two other quarterbacks on the roster, Tory Woodbury and
Gus Ornstein.

In 1999, Testaverde missed all but the first half of the season-
opener after he tore the Achilles' tendon on his left foot.

Testaverde has played 15 seasons in the NFL after being the No. 1
overall pick in the 1987 draft by Tampa Bay. He also played for the
Cleveland Browns/Baltimore Ravens from 1993-97 before signing with
the Jets in '98 as a free agent. He 32-17 record as New York's
starter.

He's on the list for the same reason Aaron Glenn and Marcus Coleman
are on the list. The Jets have all their money tied up in players who
don't deserve it. Now they're paying the price for bad cap managment.
In other words they're IDIOTS!

The most any team can lose is two players...no
way texas takes too high cap guys -- look for Young
and one of the corners to go - most likely coleman
since he is younger and

That was a suggestion by some reporters.
You
won't see it happen. He wants to start and it will
cause a rift like it did in seattle. Look for the jets
to either restructure Vinnie's contract for 2 more
years and have him and penningotn battle it out this
year and have penninton starting in 2003 or vinnie
gets cut and another vet comes in to back up

T U R N O V E R S + J E T S = L O S S
Well the
New York Jets did what they do best yesterday losing
the game on stupid plays, and the 2nd half wasn't the
beginning of this Jet trend.I guess John Hall is only
accurate from outside of 40 yards caz he missed 2 chip
shots,The Jets defense must of thought they were playing
soccer defense as they were running behind Oakland
recievers all day!Aaron Glenn and Damien Robinson couldn't
have tackled a dying snail yesterday! And please
someone buy Richie Anderson alittle glue for his gloves
so he doesnt ruin yet another game for the Jets. And
don't get me started on Vinny,Vinny Testeverde isn't
wasn't good in any quarter,in fact they could of played
12 quarters and all that would change is Vinny would
of actually been 4 times worse!I think we all know
Vinny SUCKS NO JOKING THERE.It will be a long offseason
for the Jets that is if they don't get contracted by
why would the Nfl do the Jets any favors!!!

Herm Edwards did a good job? He did but if you
look at it this way you see there really isnt much
difference between the pre-Edwards Jets and the Edwards
coached Jets. The ONLY difference in the Jets from the
2000 season is that John Hall made a 53 yard field
goal. This gave them their 10th win. Other then that
they would have ended up with the same record as the
team before under Al Groh 9-7.

As for Dungy
coming to the Jets, I think the Jets have a better
chance of covering Jerry Rice then they do getting Dungy
to take an assistant job. I dont think Dungy will
last 2-3 days before he is offered a head coaching job
in the NFL.

the Jets have had winning seasons and two playoff
