The Rochester Americans continued to roll out of a tough start to the 2000-01
season by defeating Mid-Atlantic Division rival Philadelphia on the road last
night. After trailing by a score of 2-0 early in the game, Rochester roared
back to win the contest by a score of 5-3. The victory gave the Amerks 36
points in the division, three more than the Phantoms, but five less than the
leader, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, who meets Rochester tomorrow in Rochester and
Saturday on their home ice.
After the Phantoms scored twice on three shots early in the first period,
Rochester's Chris Taylor scored his 12th goal of the season on a power-play
opportunity at 15:14 of the period. Assisting on the score were Brian
Campbell and goalkeeper Tom Askey. Dane Jackson then added the tying goal,
his 7th on the year, with a little more than 90 seconds left in the period.
The power-play goal was assisted by Campbell and Jeremy Adduono.
Rochester scored the only goal of the second period when Ryan Brindley, who
was cut in the preseason, connected at 7:30. Assisting on Brindley's first
Amerk goal were Todd Nelson and Jeremy Adduono. Philadelphia came back to
score at 7:56 of the third period to tie the game at three, but their rally
efforts were stopped beyond that point. Mike Mader scored his first goal in
the red, white and blue at 11:19 of the third, assisted by Craig Bolibruck
and Todd Nelson added the insurance goal at 15:10, assisted by Adduono and
Craig Charron.
Tom Askey, after allowing the first two goals on almost as many shots,
proceeded to stop 15 more to improve his record to 4-5-1 on the season.
Rochester's offense put together 37 shots on goal to Phildelphia's 21 and had
six power-play opportunities (two conversions). Rochester hosts the
division-leading Penguins tomorrow night at the Blue Cross Arena; the puck
drops at 7:35pm. Look for more to come on amerks@egroups!
