I'm planning on starting to write regular articles about polocrosse,
and I'll post them to the files area of this group. When I get one
written, I'll just send out a notice that a file has been added, what
it's called, and a link to go directly to it. That way you can read
it or ignore it.
I would also encourage other people to respond with comments,
criticism, rebuttal, etc.
I have made an index to the articles I plan to write, and the index
is already in the files area. Hopefully as articles get posted, if
there is something specific someone wants to refer to, they could
find it in the index.
The first article will follow shortly.

If you're just looking for personal opinions about shoeing, I'll give you
mine. The only reason I shoe a horse for polocrosse is for traction. If I
could afford polo plates, I would use them, because the have a bigger edge
on the inside which should grab pretty well. Since I don't want to pay
extra for polo plates, I have the shoer use rim shoes. They don't have a
raised edge, but have a groove cut along the entire bottom of the shoe and
don't cost any more than flat shoes. I like heel caulks if it's a muddy
field, but I never use them myself. Our fields are usually hard and I'm
scared of twisting a leg while turning.

Personally I would not advocate using studs for polocrosse- for the same reasons Britt mentioned. They serve their purpose when used for XC - even then you have to very careful what you put in. But running XC doesn't involve the stops (one hopes), starts and turns that polocrosse does and I would think the risk of injury to horse would be far greater.
Lori - not sure exactly what you are asking - in my limited experience one would shoe according to the needs of the horse - I don't recall seeing anything in the rules concerning allowing studs.
Betsy from Rocky Mountain here. Britt asked me to pass this on to you. He feels that a rim shoe is the most practicle, it is similar in design to a polo plate or a barrel racing plate and offers more traction than a plate or plain shoe. A rim shoe will hold up and last longer because it is a heavy or thick steel shoe and polo plates and barrel racing plates are either thin steel or aluminum.
Studs or corks on shoes do offer an advantage on slick surfaces, but when traction is firm, you stand a strong chance of injury to your horse because he can't slide and or his feet won't turn with him. Hope this helps some in what your looking for. Let us know if you need anything further. Bets Lori Lennox <pony@...> wrote:
Hi Dana & All,
I was asked by a person who it sounds like has dabbled in polo or something and she's asking me about polo plates, grabs, studs, etc. I'm the last person anyone should ask so I thought I would throw it out on the e-list to get the real players opinions.
Thanks, Lori

Carolinas Polocrosse is hosting a sanctioned tournament June 7 & 8.
It'll be held at the Pinehurst Harness Track, which is the site of the
APA nationals in July. I'll be happy to e-mail you the details as a Word
file attachment, or snail mail a paper copy if needed. Hope to see
everyone in June. It'll be a great warm-up for nationals....

Our Pony Club Rally got turned into an Open Tournament (May 24 & 25, Rainier, WA) in order to get enough teams to keep the entry fee affordable. Everyone is welcome to come, it is a sectional and a trial run for us to hopefully have a sanctioned tournament later in the year. Also, teams will be selected here for USPC Western Championships in July. Email me for an entry (MSWord) or if you have questions contact Nancy Alcott 360/458-6565 evenings or NancAlcott@...
Hi Diane, well, I got it anyway. I wasn't completely done either and I sit
at a computer all day every day. Oh well. Take care, Bets

We would like everyone to add their name and/or update their contact
information in the database on this web site. Go to
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/americanpolocrosseassociation/database
and click on "Complete Phonebook". That will take you to a mailing
list. If you are not on it, click to add an entry and fill out your
contact information. If you are already on it, just check and make
sure your information is correct. If not, click on "Edit" beside
your entry and fix it.
There are lots of times when someone is looking for a mailing
address, phone number or e-mail address for someone. You might miss
out on something if they can't find you.
I'll also send a notice every 6 months to check your entry so we can
keep this contact list current.
Thank you.
Paul Johnson.
OK, no response from the website's Guestbook, I'll try here!
We are losing one of our plx playing Pony Club members to the West Point Military Academy this summer. He is currently in the Army and we thought he would be going to Iraq. WP is such a nicer option! Josh Sands is an avid player and hopes to be able to stay active in the sport if at all possible. Are there any clubs near West Point and who could be his contact person? Please let me know & I'll hook you both up.
I think we emailed last year when you were looking for other players on the west coast, and somehow ended up talking to the east coast instead?
We have finally moved to a place with enough room to keep horses and play a bit of polocrosse, and to a pony club with some youngsters who are desperate to play! Fortunately they are novice enough so that even I can teach them, but that won't last! While it does,we're having fun every week practicing for the Capital Region Rally at the start of June. Good luck with your Tourney - keep on, the others out there just don't know what they're missing!
Dee Cook
ps. I hope I'm geetting this right, these groups are new to me....
Paul and Susan, This is the greatest thing since.....I don't know?
Polocrosse. I am sure this site will bring in many people from
around the world and those who have lost touch with the sport. What
a cool thing. Keep us the good work, you are true polocrosse
ambassadors. Rani and Ralph Holt
Lori Lennox,
Good idea. I had changed his address and sent an invitation to his new
address, but I neglected to delete his old address. Now I've done it.
Sorry I didn't figure out sooner why that was happening.
Paul Johnson.

Can the moderator change Dave's e-mail address to the Yahoo group for him? Otherwise we are going to get his auto reply with each message sent out to the group!. He is at the World Cup on the Canadian Team so won't be back tho his computer very soon to do it himself.
Lori Lennox,
Thanks for the input. For information, the evite we sent to just anyone
that may have ever had any interest in polocrosse, not just APA members. I
had some pony club members that had attended my clinics that I put on the
list and I encouraged anyone to invite people that may not have been
invited otherwise. This group will be the same. The membership to the
list will be open to anyone. We may start a database to keep track of who
is currently paid up APA members, so that database would only list APA
members, but the group is still open for anyone to join.
I would encourage anyone to post articles to the group about anything
having to do with polocrosse. Any member can post messages to the group by
sending an e-mail to americanpolocrosseassociation@yahoogroups.com.
We already have one database working where we are trying to keep a current
list of the ratings. Any member can view that list by going to the group
and clicking on the database section and then selecting the "Ratings" list.
Other lists should be forthcoming as anyone desires there to be one.
Potential lists are: paid up APA members; contact address/numbers for
group members; APA clubs; certified and associate umpires; etc.

Thank you for starting this! I am already on 5 Yahoo groups and find them invaluable, especially when trying to organize something and needing input ASAP!
I'm guessing that you sent your invite out to, and it is for, APA members only, correct? I think there are just 4 or 5 families who belong to APA here in WA but we have a lot of 'kinda' players. I am trying to find more reasons for them to join and will add the Yahoo Group to that list.
Any other ideas for promoting the organization are gratefully accepted. The Alcotts, Coopers and myself and son Von are the only real promoters of the sport here and it gets quite wearing after a while when we put on practices, clinics and function after function and different faces come and go, rarely staying the same. We are starting another big push for the year. We started a club last year and are having a non-sanctioned open tourney Memorial weekend (it is actually a Pony Club Rally that we are trying to salvage by opening it to anyone) and are hoping to put on a sanctioned tourney Labor Day Weekend. Last year we had 40 players, maybe if we get them to join the APA now the extra fee we will have to tack on will not stop them from attending. Unfortunate, at this time, we must rent all our playing facilities which are usually $10 per horse per day, including Ump horses, so it's hard to keep our entry fees low.
Oh-oh, I'm rambling, anyway, thanks again for getting this started, I look forward to reading the postings. I hope there will be World Cup posting also on it from those that are in contact with the team.
Lori Lennox, WA state
(Who doesn't even play except as 'filler material'. But Daniel J. likes my horse! She has more potential than I do.)
I created this list so there would be a site where things like a
current ratings list could be kept. Anyone can join the group and
any group member can look at the list, but only moderators can add to
it or make changes (right now Laura Humphreys and Prissy Rumel). I
created a database called "Ratings" from the "Off The Racquet" list,
so it is there and usable. Prissy could update the list from her
home or wherever immediately after a tournament and the list would be
current that the next tournament organizer could print from their
home.
Once you are at the list, you can make it a favorite or bookmark so
you can just click to go directly to it if you want, but to manually
get to the site from the internet, type in
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/americanpolocrosseassociation
Then click on "Database," then click on the database called "Ratings."
Paul Johnson.
