Subject: PRESS RELEASE: 2010 NSCRO Men's Collegiate Division 3 National Championship
From: Stephen D. Cohen <sdcohen4@...>

To the US Rugby Media:

The National Small College Rugby Organization (NSCRO) is pleased to announce that the 2010 NSCRO Division 3 Men’s Collegiate National Championship at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex ( http://beachsportsplex.com/venue/sportsplex-stadium/). The event will be held on Saturday, April 24 and Sunday, April 25, 2010 and be hosted by the Norfolk City Blues Rugby Football Club (RFC).  The semi finals will be Saturday and the finals and 3rd place matches will be held on Sunday.

NSCRO (www.nscro.org) was created so that "small" colleges and universities could compete for a national championship in rugby. NSCRO was formed three years ago by Steve Cohen and Chip Auscavitch. In 2009 the NSCRO Men’s Division 3 National Champion was Coastal Carolina University. Participating teams this year are:
Region 1 Champion - Keene State College (New England RFU)
Region 2 Champion - William Paterson University (Met NY RFU)
Region 3 Champion - Penn State University - Berks Campus (East Penn RU)
Region 4 Champion - University of Louisiana-Lafayette (Deep South RU)

Each team qualified through regional competitions and earned the right to play for a national championship which is detailed on the attached brackets. The brackets showing how starting with 99 eligible D3 teams representing 13 LAUs (members of 4 different TUs) NSCRO determined the participants in the Championship event.

The Virginia Beach Sportsplex stadium is a fantastic setting for this event and a showcase for these deserved student-athletes. These teams will be traveling from all over the country to enjoy the hospitality of Virginia Beach, the scenic view of the oceanfront, and the best, most professionally run stadium in the rugby community. The event is free and open to the public. No outside food or beverage is permitted. Parking is free.

As an incentive for teams to use the official event hotel, NSCRO will reimburse each team $250 for doing so.

BC Productions ( www.bbcstudio.com) is providing videotaping services for all matches. USA Eagle Phaidra Knight will be doing the commentating.

The schedule is:
Saturday, April 24, 2010
12:30 pm Semi Final - Penn State Berks vs. William Paterson
3:00 pm Semi Final two - Louisiana-Lafayette vs. Keene State

Sunday, April 25, 2010
10:00 am - 3rd place
12:30 pm - Championship

Awards Ceremony and Team Photos immediately following Championship.
Trophies will be awarded to the top 3 finishing teams. An MVP trophy will be awarded.
Both the Champion and Runnerup teams will each receive 25 player medals. Gold for the Champion and Silver for the Runnerup.

Event details can be found at www.bluesrugby.org including brackets, hotel information, game information, and general rugby information (how the game’s played).

It is with a heavy heart that I share with you that Matt Comstock has died.  It appears that he died peacefully in his sleep.

We would all be hard-pressed to find such an example of a teammate who exemplified all that is admirable.  A fabulous and unselfish player, Matt put in some unbelievable performances on the pitch.  He was truly a star at fullback or any other position he was asked to handle; however he was even more notable off the field as a humble gentleman whose interest lay with others.  He will be greatly missed.

Our prayers go out to his family and friends, particularly Pedro Wildenberg and Joe Kiley who always joined the Cardinals together from Minnesota.

Here are the follow-up details on services for Matt Comstock.

The service will run from 1-2 p.m. with several people who have known Matt in different elements of his life sharing thoughts and memories. Afterward, we'll celebrate his life with the chance to tell more stories, share memories and reminisce about the fun Matt brought to each of us.

Attire: Mitchie attire - coordinated fashions are frowned upon. Clashes are encouraged and expected.

On Saturday, food will be catered (sandwiches, chips, drinks, etc.). We'll have tables and chairs for many guests, but if you have space throw your chairs-in-a-bag in the car before leaving home.

Women's Rugby Comes to a Close After Tumultuous Year
Henry Carr

Issue date: 4/14/10 Section: Sports

During its spring season, which concluded at the end of March, the women's rugby team competed valiantly against its opponents in the Southern California Rugby Football Union.

A young team with a majority of first-time players, women's rugby faced off against larger schools in the league, such as UCLA and USC.

Although they were unable to pick up a win this season, the heart and fierce determination of these women shone every time they took to the field.

Despite their no-win season, the Blackshirts made significant improvement as the season progressed. Their last three games against Claremont, Cal State University Fullerton (CSUF) and USC made up some of the finer performances of the year.

For its second-to-last game, the rugby squad traveled to CSUF to do battle with the Titans. Missing several starters due to injuries and scheduling conflicts, the team was forced to rearrange its lineup, moving several players into unfamiliar positions for the match.

Despite this setback, the team excelled, led by scoring runs from Captain Danielle Siegler (junior) and Lauren Meyer (sophomore). The Blackshirts nearly pulled off a stunning upset, just barely falling short in a heartbreaking 15-12 defeat.

The next weekend, the ruggers headed east to challenge the University of Arizona Wildcats. Unfortunately, while on the highway, one of the team's cars got into an accident. Although no one was seriously injured, the Blackshirts were forced to turn back and forfeit the match.

Shaken but undeterred, the squad returned home for one last game against USC on the final Saturday evening of March. The Blackshirts fought courageously in the season-ender, but eventually fell 14-41 to the formidable Women of Troy.

Despite the odds stacked against them, the Blackshirts found strength in their connections to their teammates.

"We all clicked very well from the start," said rugby player Kanika Tua'one (sophomore), who joined the team this year. "It helped that the majority of the team were rookies, so we were able to learn and progress together as a team."

Under the patient guidance of Coach Maggie Cooper and Siegler, the squad saw some great individual and team improvements over the course of the season.

"We've had a ton of new rookies," said Coach Cooper. "It's been a fun year of learning with a great bunch of ruggers." Although rugby has a reputation as an unforgiving sport, the young women on the team express a different sentiment.

"In comparison to other sports, I would have to say it's the most friendly, oddly enough," said rookie player Jennefer Canales (sophomore). "After games, you go and bond with the opposing team, which minimizes the anger or dislike you may have built up towards them."

The Blackshirts will begin next season with a strong foundation, as it is retaining most of its core squad.

Hopefully, with another year of experience under its belt, the women's rugby team will return next spring ready to exact revenge on the league. Women's rugby will undoubtedly be a sport to keep an eye on over the next few years.

Men's Rugby Ends Season With Pride Despite Final Cal Lutheran Loss

The men's rugby team officially ended its season after its game against Cal Lutheran University on March 27. The season has been a tumultuous one for the team, consisting of hard-fought games, honorable losses and incredible victories.

Although the team started its season with a loss to UC San Diego and a non-league loss to Loyola Marymount University, the team quickly rebounded with an impressive four-game winning streak against Whittier (22-5), the University of Nevada Las Vegas (41-17), Westmont (53-0) and Azusa Pacific University (29-10) in mid-March. Soon after, the team faced a series of devastating losses to Fullerton (10-32) and Cal Lu (12-14).

This roller coaster ride of wins and losses led to the team's general sense of dissatisfaction with the season. "This season was bittersweet," said Jonathan Ni (junior). "Basically, we did not do as well as I had hoped."

In addition to scores that span across the board, injuries heavily contributed to the season's mixed outcome. The team started with about 30 players at the beginning of the season, but numbers steadily dwindled down to about 20 by the last game.

According to player Joshua Youngs (senior), the rugby team consistently strives to excel as a club sport in the hopes of becoming a more established sport on campus.

"We wanted to act, be and be respected as more than a 'club' sport. We wanted varsity recognition and success," he said. "However, the challenge to do so was far greater than we could imagine, despite our great strides to do so. We would have all liked to win more, and score more, but the lessons of persistence, dedication and team work served each one of us equally well."

The team's current club sport status prevents it from partaking in certain events, such as a substantial senior night for its graduating players. Their last game against APU technically served as their senior night, but no real festivities were held.

"There was no real special thing for graduating seniors, just the fact that it was our last game on home turf," Austin Barnum (senior) said. "Rugby is too small a sport at Oxy to get any kind of support to borrow the announcement system to say the names or play music over the loud speakers, even for senior night."

The men's rugby game against APU on March 19 was especially significant for the team because it was its last game on Occidental's field. After a slow start, the team quickly picked up their momentum and managed to leave the field victorious.

"It was an amazing feeling to walk off of our home field for the last time a winner," said Barnum.

However, the team didn't have much time to celebrate because it was scheduled to face Cal Fullerton the next evening for another game. This match - the last one of the season - yielded disappointing results. The team played well the first half, scoring more than the opposing team. However, coupled with Oxy's failed extra-point attempts, Cal Lu's acquired penalty scores were enough to shift the game to Cal Lu's advantage. Cal Lu led the game by two points, without much time for the Blackshirts to recuperate or counter. "It was a very disappointing loss," said Youngs. "But we held our heads high despite the let down."

Though the season did not unfold the way the players would have preferred, they are still looking forward to next year and are proud of the accomplishments they made this season.

Rugby beginners make it to nationals

3rd straight trip for BGSU

Howard Chen
FOX Toledo Sports Director
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Beginners? How about calling BG's rugby players, "naturals," instead?

Falcon coaches estimate about half the team never had any rugby experience before they arrived on campus.

Yet the team leaves Wednesday for its third straight trip to nationals, an honor only 15 other schools can lay claim to.

"If you have some sort of athletic background, obviously football is a good lead into rugby, but you'd be surprised how many sports actually can lead into a sport like rugby," BGSU head coach Tony Mazzarella said.

Several of the newbies had either played football, hockey or wrestled. But even with their athletic abilities, there was still a lot to learn.

"I would just get penalties all the time like crazy," said Daniel Grime, a freshman flanker on the team. "I'd look around, like, what'd I do? I don't know. I just hit people. I don't know."

But Grime and his teammates proved to be quick learners.

His teammate, Tyler Bender, said, "You might look at us, 'Oh, these guys look like a bunch of ragtag bunch of scoundrels,' but you see us on the field when we play, I mean, we take it to the highest level."

Bowling Green's made a tradition of that. Three straight conference titles. Three straight trips to the nationals. It's not a bad finish, especially for the guys who didn't know what to do at the start.

Midwest division 3 tilt set

Posted: 14 Apr 2010 11:54 AM PDT

Eight teams will contend for this weekend's Midwest division 3 championship in Chicago.

The inaugural event pits Illinois State against Viterbo (LaCrosse, Wisconsin), Wabash (Crawfordsville, Indiana) versus Univ. of Illinois-Chicago, Wright State (Dayton, Ohio) against Calvin (Grand Rapids, Michigan), and St. Thomas (St. Paul, Minnesota) opposite of Clarion (of Pennsylvania).

The latter matchup features two schools which are approximately 850 miles apart, a reminder that American competition comprises much larger geography than all of the leading European nations. With all of the territory's 8 regions now including division 3 (or neophyte) leagues, the competition could double to 16 entrants next year, according to organizers.

The debut is more than simply evidence of increasing numbers of college teams. The Midwest title as well as the National Small College Rugby Organization's tournament conform to mainstream American expectations of competition that concludes with playoffs. For these students, the athletic purpose of rugby is to play for a championship, not to represent their country.

If that sounds obvious, remember than Britain and Ireland had no formal league schedules or standings until the late 1980s. The replacement of the 'merit table' system was most controversial.

Hosted by the South Side Irish club, the tournament will not be contested on a college campus. Nor will USARFU's division 2 round of 16, a jamboree scheduled next week for Florida, or NSCRO's division 3 final four-style event. Eligibility for the Midwest and USARFU tournaments is self-defined; NSCRO's depends on student enrollment numbers.

Separately, there's an interesting piece on Iowa high school 7s on Rugby Magazine. The 'single school' competition comprises tournaments over five consecutive weeks, with the last being the finals. Ground rules have been modified to eliminate lineout lifting and conversion kicks, while two refs work every match.

Gentlemen and Lady,

Two of your current UGA ruggers are trying to get to New Zealand to play rugby in the land of the All Blacks this summer.

I'm going to skip to the end and say our trip would conclude with the opening match of the Trinations tournament July uly  0th. One hell of a way to end a trip.

Myself , Tyler Leonard and Micheal Thompson are trying to raise money for our trip and boys I can say that we are starting from ground zero.     We have one month to raise $2000 dollars  each.  We will work on a farm while we are there and bust our asses to learn and play as much rugby as we can.  Lodging will be aranged by Richard sdlkfja and will be worked out when and if we can get the money together.  We need help to get there and are willing to work for it.  You all have those jobs around the house that would be perfect for two strapping young individuals to accomplish in an afternoon or two.  Better yet we can run a mile for every $100 donated (Yes it's a steep price I'm a prop not a wing).  I think you know what I'm getting at; we need money and we would sacrifice pride to get it. Opportunities like this do not arise often, especially not the summer before your last season of college rugby.  We have both been committed to the team and the sport since we have been at UGA we both endured knee injuries requiring surgery around the same time and now we want to make it to the other side of the world to show them what the UGA RFC is all about.  If there is something we can do for you or if you want to donate to the cause it would not be forgotten. Thank you boys for all the support you provide to the team and us as individuals.

Cheers, Tyler

If you sell 90 copies to players families/friends, fans, and alumni, you can make $10 a copy or $900.  Obviously that will not fund your trip, but it will help you get started, educate and entertain those around you, it will help you recruit new players, and help you communicate the message of rugby effectively to sponsors.  20% of the gross goes to USA Rugby to help youth development and to help “defend the gold”.

Good luck with your efforts.  Let me know if you are interested.

Thanks,

Subject: [blindpigs] Last chance for 2010 College National Championships Pool
From: Doug Porter <doug@...>

Games start Friday, so today's your last chance to get in to the pool.
Remember that this year we have an actual prize, a UGA Rugby Polo
Shirt. Entry is free.

Right now we have 18 people signed up, but only 5 people have their
entries in correctly:

Doug Porter (me!)
Isaac Lee
Jen Walton
Martin Mueller
Will Baldwin

If you think you're in but aren't listed, there are directions at the
bottom for how to fix your entries.

---------------------

It's time again for our college national championships pool. There
are a few changes this year. I've found a web interface for running
the pool. It's a bit rough (I didn't write it!) and possibly buggy,
but, hey, it's there.

To join:
http://patstat.org:8080/tournament/servlet/com.tournamentpool.servlet.MyTournamentServlet?invitationCode=C9GGP6

I'd tell you the scoring but I actually don't know what it is. It's
"fibonachi" (their spelling), so presumably points go up as the rounds
go on, most likely in a 1, 1, 2, 3 pattern.

Also, we won't be able to pick the loser's bracket games this year.

But you MUST PICK BOTH THE MEN'S AND WOMEN'S, we combine your scores
on them to determine the winner.

Entry is free.

I'm upping the prize. Traditionally it's been $1. This year it's a
UGA Rugby polo shirt, which I will ship to you if you're not in town.
There are some size limitations, so no guarantee that it will fit you
:-)

Entries must be in before games start on Friday, April 16th.

If you run into problems with the website let me know.

cheers,

doug

-------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------

1) To fix your entry, login to the site:
http://patstat.org:8080/tournament/servlet/com.tournamentpool.servlet.MyTournamentServlet

2) In the "Brackets" section, click on the men's bracket you've
already filled out.

3) Click the "Add saved bracket to pool" button at the top.

4) Enter the tiebreaker answer.

5) Click the "My Tournament" link in the top right to return to the
main page.

5) Repeat for your women's bracket.

To verify that you have it right, in the "Groups" section of the main
page, click on 2010 Men's Rugby Championships and make sure your name
is listed. Then check the 2010 Women's Rugby Championships and make
sure you're listed.

If you're there for both, then you're golden.

Rugby - Scrummin’ Utes aim to make final four in nat’l championships
By Kelsey Price

Published: Wednesday, April 14, 2010

The Utah rugby team will head to Marietta, Ga., this weekend to play in the 2010 USA Rugby National Championship Series. The Utes will face Texas A&M in the first round Saturday.

Playoffs are here for the Scrummin’ Utes.

Utah’s rugby team is heading to Marietta, Ga., this weekend to play in the 2010 USA Rugby National Championship Series. The Scrummin’ Utes will face No. 11 Texas A&M in the first round Saturday.

“Our goal this weekend is to stay focused and make the final four of the tournament,” said head coach Blake Burdette. “We’ve got to try to win this one game at a time.”

The tournament consists of four pools with four teams each, comparable to the Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight rounds of the NCAA basketball playoffs. Utah, which holds the fourth seed in the Pacific Coast division and the 12th overall seed, is in the D pool. Other teams in the pool include A&M, Army and University of Tennessee. Army and Texas A&M were the champions of their respective conferences, earning the fourth and fifth seeds of the tournament.

On Saturday, Utah will play A&M, which is entering the tournament with just one regular-season loss against LSU. The Aggies are entering the tournament fresh from winning the regional playoffs for the West conference. Texas A&M narrowly beat LSU 20-14 in the championship game. In the course of the season, A&M went 2-1 against LSU.

Utah and Texas A&M met earlier this year in February at the Las Vegas Invitational, which showcased exhibition matches featuring more than 160 teams. At the time, the Utes were ranked No. 3, and the Aggies were listed at No. 20.

Although the Utes hounded Texas A&M 36-9 at their last meet, the team is wary of becoming overconfident as it heads into the single-game elimination tournament.

“There are a few advantages to play a team we’ve faced earlier,” Burdette said. “We know their patterns and plays, so we have a general idea of what they may do. But both teams are better than the last time we played. We’re not automatically going to expect the same result. We still have to work for it.”

If victorious against the Aggies, Utah will play the winner of the game between No. 17 Tennessee and No. 7 Army. Tennessee suffered three losses during the regular season for an overall 9-3 record. Army went undefeated in its regular play, capturing seven wins.

Utah and Army are favored to win their matches, which would result in a Utah-Army face-off Sunday afternoon. The winner of the D pool will then travel to Stanford, Calif., for the semifinals April 30.

If Utah advances to the final four round of the tournament, it is likely the match will be another rivalry face-off with BYU, assuming the Cougars also win their pool. The Utes split the series 1-1 with BYU this season.

“Our goal this weekend is to make the final four,” Burdette said. “We have the team to do it, (we) just have to stick with it and take the tournament game by game. It’s one and done—we can’t jump ahead of ourselves.”

The Scrummin’ Utes can be followed this weekend at www.usarugby.org or on the team’s Twitter at www.twitter.com/utahrugby

NYAC plays Old Blue at Baker field Soccer Stadium on 218 st and Broadway at 1pm Saturday April 17th.

It is easily accessible by car (ample parking) and public transport (1 train or A train).

Both teams are off to a strong start in the super league, so it should prove to be a tough and entertaining game. We would love to see you out there, no matter which side you will be pulling for.

M

 RSL Week #6
 Written by John Doody

 April 16, 2010

Three weeks left in the regular season, and the stakes are high in both conferences.

In the east, Life University have a slight edge over NYAC in the standings due to a superior points difference. Life would appear to have an easier outing this weekend, as they travel to Boston to play the Irish Wolfhounds. The Wolfhounds are 0-4 despite having a late lead in their last three games, and with injuries taking a toll, a mountain looms for the Irish.

Life allowed their opponents to mount a late comeback last week, and will be looking to not repeat that on Saturday. NYAC appears to have a tougher game in store as they try to keep pace with Life, as they host Old Blue New York. Old Blue is 2-1 and will relish the thought of taking on their local rivals, but Old Blue coach Cieutat notes his team will have to improve on recent performances in order to compete with NYAC.

The final game in the east has Charlotte at Boston. Boston needs a win to keep close to the conference leaders, and Charlotte needs a win to get them back into contention. A loss would mean the loser would finish at best with a .500 record and little chance of hosting a playoff game. Little room for error here. PAC has the weekend off.

In the west, the Chicago Lions travel to OMBAC in a matchup of 0-3 teams. The Lions are improving after a slow start, and while OMBAC has the young talent they have not been able to come up with any joy on the scoreboard. Winning out their remaining games would put either team back into the running for a playoff spot, so there’s no time to waste here.

In Dallas, the locals entertain San Francisco Golden Gate. SFGG needs a win to maintain the lead in the conference, and although Dallas has been playing opponents closer than their 0-3 record suggests, the locals may have a tough day in store.

The marquee matchup of the west has the Chicago Griffins challenging the Barbarians in Denver. With identical 3-1 records, the Griffins trail the Barbarians by two bonus points in the standings. The Griffins will be flying high after knocking off Old Puget Sound Beach last week, but the Barbarians have been very efficient over the last few weeks.

The Griffins do not score a lot of points, but they usually do not give up many either, so another close one may be in store. OPSB have the weekend off, and they will be happy for that as they prepare for perhaps the two best teams in the conference over the next two weeks.

A Look at the Match-Ups for Week 6 - April 16

West Conference

The Chicago Griffins and Denver Barbarians face-off in what should prove to be the marquee matchup of the week, as both teams bring 3-1 records to the table. Look for a defensive battle to the finish in the west.

·    NYAC may have a tough game in store as they host Old Blue New York. Old Blue is as 2-1 and will relish the thought of taking on their local rivals, but know they have to improve on recent performances in order to compete with NYAC.

Top Seeds Advance Following First Day of College Playoffs

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.  – The top seeds saw success following the first four matches at the USA Rugby National College Playoffs held at the University of California –Santa Barabara’s Harder Stadium, on Friday.

In the first match of the day, the sixth seed Arkansas State team jumped out to an early 22-3 lead over their 11th seeded counterpart, Saint Mary’s College of California. Saint Mary’s regrouped at half, however, and proved a worthy opponent, scoring 15 consecutive points to bring the traditionally strong rugby program from Northern California within a try by the final whistle. In the end, though Arkansas State was able to do what it needed to and walked away with a 29-23 victory to continue its post-season trek.

Arkansas State will play another strong California side, San Diego State University, tomorrow, at 1 p.m.  following the Aztec’s win over Bowling Green State University.

In what proved to be much less dramatic than the earlier match, the SDSU side actually found itself trailing early out, but found its offensive attack somewhere near the middle of the first half and never looked back. Bowling Green stayed somewhat close off of penalty kicks alone, scoring it’s15 points off the boot of Nick Viviani. It wouldn’t prove enough for the Midwest side as SDSU finished with a 32-15 win.

In the closest match of the day, the eighth seeded Arizona side just narrowly slid by the No. 9 Syracuse to advance to the winner’s bracket. Arizona was able to gain the lead in the first 10 minutes and then went on to build a 10 point lead before allowing Syracuse one final try near the end to bring the score within five. Arizona won with a 25-20 final scoreline and will play BYU tomorrow at 3 p.m.

The University of Delaware came out surprisingly strong against the reigning champions, BYU, but, following a brief lapse in its defense in which BYU scored 33 points, it looked over for the spirited team from the northeast. After the half, though, Delaware confirmed they wouldn’t roll over and did not allow BYU to score any additional points. BYU was still able to walk away with a 33-13 win over the University of Delaware, but there was not one person that didn’t respect the mongrel that came from the Delaware side.

“They should be very proud of the effort they put forth. They played very hard in that second half and were a credit to their University,” BYU Coach David Smyth said. “We don’t overlook anybody and although we would have liked to score some points in the second, our team did what it had to do to make it to the next round.”

WAYNE, Nebraska (AP) -Long denied the chance to compete in contact sports, American women are now joining rugby clubs in record numbers - and relishing the hard-nosed nature of what's been called a gentleman's game for ruffians.

On a recent afternoon, the Wayne State College women's club team practiced right along with the men in a meadow on the north edge of campus.

They locked arms and heads and otherwise contorted themselves in scrums. Women big and small chased each other, and held car tires as they ran laps to build strength and conditioning.

No passers-by seemed to blink.

Women make up the fastest-growing segment of rugby players in the United States. With youth programs still in their infancy, and rugby becoming an Olympic sport in 2016, the future of the sport in this country depends on club teams like the one here at this 3,600-student school tucked among the farm fields of northeast Nebraska.

Most of Wayne State's players - men and women alike - didn't know the difference between a rugby ball and a grapefruit when they signed up.

The women migrated from sports such as basketball, volleyball and softball. Giving the chance to play the sport from which American football spawned, they gush about the rush they get from "blowing up" an opponent and the pride with which they wear their bumps and bruises.

Jennifer Becker bragged about the time two years ago that she broke her nose trying to tackle a University of Michigan player.

"She turned a different way and I nailed my nose into the side of her face," the senior from Madison, Nebraska, said. "But I kept playing. They wiped up the blood, plugged up my nose a little bit and I went on. I had to show those people from Michigan that we weren't quitters."

Such bravado doesn't surprise U.S. women's national team coach Kathy Flores.

"Women have always wanted to be physical," she said, "but they haven't had the opportunity."

That's changing. USA Rugby, the sport's governing body in the United States, has recorded a 235 percent increase in registered female players since 1999, from 6,104 to 20,430.

Officials expect that number to continue growing with rugby's return to the Olympics in 2016 for the first time since 1924. There will be competition for both genders, but in a seven-on-seven format rather than the traditional 15-to-a-side game.

Some future Olympians very well could be playing for a powerhouse such as Penn State or Stanford in the college club national playoffs in California and Florida this weekend.

Or they could be running about on a small college campus like the one at Wayne, which has won its league, or union, eight straight years and has knocked off club teams from bigger schools such as Nebraska, Iowa State and Texas Tech, among others.

The college club players aren't much different than those currently on U.S. national teams. Few played rugby before high school or college, and most hold full- or part-time jobs on the side.

Flores said basketball players tend to convert into the best rugby players because of their hand-eye coordination, ability to catch and run and the fact they are accustomed to a game that has quick changes of possession. Soccer players also make an easy transition, she said.

U.S. Women's National Sevens coach Ric Suggitt said an athlete unable to achieve elite status in her primary sport can excel in rugby.

"There might be an athlete who is two-tenths of a second away from qualifying for the Olympics, and rugby might suit her," Suggitt said. "That's the type of athlete we need to identify. We need to leave those avenues open for the track athletes and the basketball, soccer and lacrosse players. It's a dream for kids to go to the Olympics, and this might give them that chance."

Sometimes the biggest hurdle for women is mental.

"There are those who think they'll appear manly if they play," Flores said. "But girls are tough. Sometimes they just don't know it."

That could change if the sport gains exposure. Suggitt said he hopes to see girls begin training in rugby in elementary school, as is common in other sports.

As of now, Sebastian River (Florida) High is the only high school in the nation that has a varsity girls rugby team, though there are about 150 high school girls' club teams.

The NCAA gave women's rugby "emerging sport" status in 2002, allowing Division I programs to award as many as 12 scholarships. So far, Eastern Illinois is the only school to start a program, but the athletic department funds the equivalent of less than one scholarship divided among 20 players. There are about 400 college club teams, with some offering scholarships, but most requiring members to pay a fee to play and cover their own travel expenses.

Though the sport gets minimal exposure in the United States - it's extremely popular in Australia and Europe - Americans have generally fared well since international competition for women started in 1987.

The United States will play in the Women's Rugby World Cup in England in August. The Americans finished fifth in 2006. Flores said the United States is considered a "sleeping giant" because of the nation's wealth of athletes.

The challenge for Suggitt and Flores is to find the ones who can help the United States achieve at the highest level, whether at the Olympics for the seven-player game or at the World Cup for the traditional game.

Wayne State in 2002 produced a top-caliber player in Angela Matthews, who made the U.S. under-19 team.

"Ronnie Lott with shaved legs," Wayne coach Darrin Barner said, referring to the former NFL star. "She was flat-out the meanest-tackling thing you've ever seen in your life. Her first year here, I would have started her on the men's team."

No current Wayne player has the skill of Matthews.

Passion? That's another matter.

Whitney Nielsen, a senior from Sioux City, Iowa, was a member of the Wayne State softball team for less than a week as a freshman before she quit to take up rugby.

"I had never played a contact sport before, and it was so much fun," Nielsen said. "Women don't get a lot of opportunity to experience contact. I was intrigued by it."

Nielsen got a mixed reaction from her family when she broke the news that she was giving up softball.

"My grandma was terrified for me," she said. "My dad thought it was awesome. You watch volleyball and softball, and then you watch a tackling sport ... He was like, 'Yeah, my daughter is going to kick butt.' "

But thuggery is not part of the game. According to rugby lore, the physicality of the game breeds mutual respect among the players. That's why it's known as a gentleman's game, and now a lady's game, too.

"Yeah, it's kind of a violent sport," Nielsen said. "But in the end we walk off the field and we're ladies and gentlemen and say 'please' and 'thank you' and all that stuff."

(Chapin, SC/WLTX) ---  When you talk about grass roots efforts, the coaches and players competing in high schoolrugby are doing so with the goal of seeing the sport become officially sanctioned by the South Carolina High School League.

In the meantime, the sport will crown a state champion Sunday afternoon and the Chapin Rugby Club is one of the teams vying for the title. But practice also means stopping for a few moments to talk to the local media, all in an effort to spread the message about the sport.

When asked to compare football to rugby, Chapin junior Rion Tapp, who plays both sports at Chapin, says rugby is more demanding because there are no breaks in the game and as a result, it requires more stamina.  Playing with no padding is a well-known fact about rugby.

Five years down the road, Chapin Rugby coach Ken McCarthy says he would hope there would be as many as 20-30 high school teams competing in the sport. That many teams would certainly bring some credibility as the sport attempts to become an officially recognized sport.

Arkansas State, Brigham Young Advance to College Championships

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.Arkansas State and Brigham Young University were the first two Men’s Division I Collegiate Teams to advance to the USA Rugby Collegiate National Championships today from the University of Santa Barbara’s playoff event.

In the game of the day, #6 seed Arkansas State upset #3 San Diego State University in a battle to the finish. Arkansas was determined to not allow the SDSU back line much space and only allowed two tries from the usually threatening offense of the Aztecs. In the end, Arkansas State secured its first-ever appearance in the Collegiate National Championship event with a 17-10 victory by holding a strong SDSU Team within meters of the goal for a large portion of the second half.

“They have been doing that the entire season,” Matt Huckaby said. “I trust that they can hold strong at the goal line and that’s really just a credit to the character of this team. I’m very proud of their effort and active problem solving in this game. But we know we still have a lot of progress to make and it’s back to work next week.”

The USA Rugby College National Championships are set for April 30-May 1 at Stanford University and will feature the top four teams from each college division as they play for the chance to take home that Championship title.

Arkansas State will be joined at the Championship event by the reigning National Champions, BYU, after their 46-10 stomping of Arizona today, and two other Division I men’s sides, which will be finalized tomorrow in Marietta, Ga.

On the Women’s DI side, the #2 seeded Stanford University team dominated the University of Northern Iowa, 62-9, in their first match of the playoffs. Stanford will go on to play Virginia tomorrow for the chance to make it back to their home field for the National tournament. Virginia beat Texas A&M, 26-14, in their early morning match at UC-Santa Barbara today.

UCLA will also play in the winner’s bracket tomorrow after their 17-5 victory over UC-Davis. UCLA will take on Army after they crushed the University of Delaware team, 66-8 in the 11 a.m. women’s game today.

In the consolation bracket, Saint Mary’s College of California beat Bowling Green, 51-32, in an impressive offensive battle, while the University of Delaware’s men’s side continued to impress with their 37-14 upset over Syracuse. A win in the consolation bracket helps distinguish seeds heading into next year’s Collegiate playoff series.

First Day of Playoffs See Several Close Finishes at Life University

MARIETTA, Ga. – After an action packed day of rugby at Life University, the perennial favorite California Golden Bears progressed to the round of eight along with Utah, Army, and Penn State.

In the first of the day’s match ups, Army took on the University of Tennessee, and unfortunately for the Volunteers it didn’t take long for Army to stamp their authority on the game as an early try from Will Holder set the tone for the match. Tennessee battled hard throughout but found themselves up against the sternest of Army defenses, and as the match progressed it was visible that Army’s resilience had taken its toll as 14 points were conceded in the last ten minutes (11 of which came from Dom Catino) to confirm the Black Knights victory, 46-10.

The day’s second game between Penn State and LSU saw two evenly matched teams put everything on the line.  LSU got off to a flying start taking a commanding 22-0 lead after 39 minutes. However, a try from Chris Saint immediately before the break seemed to install new life and some much needed belief into the Nittany Lions.

After the break, Penn State came roaring back with three quick scores. This clearly shook LSU as their fluent play in the first half seemed to abandon them. Despite Penn State’s dominance in the second half they left it very late to take the lead. Jake Thuma getting the try to give them a narrow 26-25 lead, with just five minutes remaining. The points were sealed moments later as Mike Erikson crashed over the line to cap off a quite stunning comeback.

"LSU is a good team and they put the pressure on us. Eventually we adjusted and our forwards went into full force, ultimately turning the game our way." Penn State Head Coach, Don Ferrel said.

The 2 p.m. matchup between Utah and Texas A&M provided the most thrilling encounter of the day. Utah, touted as a team to watch, were placed as firm favorites, and it was them who put the first points up after a darting run from Chase Jardine. Nevertheless, it didn’t take long for the Aggies to get back into the game, and 22 unanswered points ensured they went into halftime as unexpected leaders.

Shortly after the break, Utah added three points to their score through Zach Culton’s penalty, but it was A&M who picked up where they left off, with a try from Hunter Leland making it 27-10. Utah finally rallied and pulled back two try’s in quick succession only to allow A&M to edge ahead again with a try from Brian Guillen.

With time running out, Utah turned up the pace and try’s from Nick Mostyn and Mike Kimbell quickly drew the Utes level. The decisive points came from the resulting conversion which Zach Culton calmly dispatched. The final 10 minutes were tense, but Utah held on to spare their blushes and win the game, 36-34.

In the all California clash between Cal and UCLA, it was the Bruins who drew first blood. However, it didn’t take long for the tournament “favorites” to square things up, as Neil Barrett burst through for the try. Cal continued to play tough, and they quickly extended their lead to 19-5, but a gutsy display saw the Bruins claw themselves back. At this point, Cal put their foot on the gas, and thanks to five try’s in 15 minutes (a further two from Neil Barrett) they took a commanding 43-22 lead at halftime. Immediately after the restart it was Barrett again on the score sheet to seemingly put the tie beyond UCLA’s reach, but the Bruin’s showed great fight and spirit to pull back another try.

With Cal’s Head Coach, Jack Clark becoming more frustrated by his team’s poor defense display, he made a number of changes which settled things down and allowed Cal to dominate the remainder of the game, and eventually run out 65-32 winners.

“The tournament is all about advancing and we are happy to advance” Jack Clark said.

Army, Stanford Advance to the Women’s College Championships Following Playoffs in Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Women’s teams from Army and Stanford University earned their way to the USA Rugby Collegiate National Championships following the final day of Division I playoffs at the University of California - Santa Barbara on Sunday.

The USA Rugby College National Championships are set for April 30-May 1 at Stanford University and will feature the top four teams from each college division as they play for the chance to take home that Championship title.

Following a 43-5 victory over Virginia, the No. 2 seeded Stanford University Women make their way back home with just two weeks to finish preparations before they host this annual event for the eighth year in a row.

“We have two more weeks to get the kinks out,” Stanford Coach Jonathan Griffin said. “We played well in the first half (against #7 Virginia). In fact those first 40 minutes were everything we had hoped to accomplish, but the last 40 minutes left something to be desired.

“We didn’t step it up like we had wanted to,” he added. “However, I’m pleased with the overall performance of our team. “They have set tough targets for themselves and they continue to work hard to achieve them.”

Stanford’s standout wing Jessica Watkins attributed to 25 of the 43 points in their win over Virginia, while playmaker and outside center Amelia Villines added nine points and was responsible for at least three assists to Watkins on the weak side. The duo looked nearly unstoppable and will continue to be a huge piece of the Stanford offense as it looks to meet Brown in the semifinals on their home field.

In the final match of the day, Army also looked exceptional as it cruised to a 52-0 win over UCLA and secured their place at the Championships in two week’s time.

Winger Anne Lee and fullback Jessica Sexauer had two tries each in their victory and will no doubt lead their team as they look to face Penn State in the semifinals. Although the Army Women’s Team outscored their opponents 118-8 over the last two days, the team knows they have a huge test ahead when they meet the top-ranked Women’s DI opponent in just two weeks time.

“Penn State is a whole other animal,” Army Coach Will Riddle said. “The girls know that we still have some work to do. Today we seemed a bit sloppy around the breakdown and we’ll have to work on cleaning that up. Penn State has a very similar style to us, and it’s going to be a very tough match. I’m excited to be involved.”

In the earlier DI Women’s consolation matches, Texas A&M was able to walk away with a 25-14 win over the University of Northern Iowa, while UC-Davis handled Delaware 19-3.

Army and Cal Earn Trip to Championship Finals Following Playoffs in Atlanta

Marietta, Ga. - Army and Cal will join Arkansas State and BYU in the USA Rugby Collegiate National Championships after advancing from Life University’s playoff event on Sunday afternoon.

On the second day of the playoff event at Life, fans were treated to a sensational match between the University of Utah and Army. The very even contest on paper proved to be the case in reality, and after 78 minutes of matching each other blow for blow, and with the match tied, a crucial conversion kick fell to Utah’s Zach Colton. Unfortunately, Utah’s hopes of a last gasp winner and a trip to the round of four were dashed, as they watched the attempted kick miss its target.

The first period of overtime ended without change, after both teams put on stubborn defensive displays. However, as the game carried on, Army’s fitness and stamina began to show, and it was No.14 Ben Leatigaga’s breakaway try that proved to be the difference between the two sides, with the match ending, 31-24.

“Utah is a great team who plays with a lot of heart”. Army Head Coach, Rich Pohlidal said. “We are trying to win a National Championship and to do that we have to go through teams like BYU, Utah and Cal. We are very happy to be here” he added.

The USA Rugby College National Championships are set for April 30-May 1 at Stanford University and will feature the top four teams from each college division as they play for the chance to take home that Championship title.

Cal cemented their place in the Championship event after a 61-19 mauling of Penn State. Saturday’s game against UCLA saw the Golden Bears field a weakened side, and it appeared to pay dividends as they took the game by the scruff of the neck as early on as the third minute. Penn State’s effort and determination was apparent, but unfortunately it was no match for Cal’s superior ability, and they stormed into halftime with a 37-12 lead. The onslaught didn’t let up after the break, and a further 24 points ensured Cal ran out emphatic victors.

“The guys worked really hard, so this is a good reward. We leave no illusions about how difficult the next level will be, but we are happy to advance” Cal Head Coach, Jack Clark said.

In the consolation games, Texas A&M battled to a 21-10 win over Tennessee, and after a slow start, LSU rallied to dominate their match against UCLA and run out 41-14 winners. It was a mere consolation for both teams who lost out in very close battles on Saturday afternoon. However, a win in the consolation bracket does help distinguish seeds heading into next year’s Collegiate playoff series.
