The Home Depot Center is the second soccer-specific
stadium built for a Major League Soccer team during
their short 8-year history. Besides this stadium and
the first one built (for the Columbus Crew in 1999),
there are 2 more in advanced planning stages.
The Home Depot Center will be the new home of the L.A.
Galaxy, the 2002 MLS League Champions and Cup holder.
(Carlos Ruiz, who scored the winning goal in the MLS
Cup, is also the MLS League MVP for 2002.) In its
inaugural 2003 season, the Home Depot Center will also
host the MLS All-Star Game and the 2003 MLS Cup.
The Home Depot Center will be a state-of-the-art
facility, and will comfortably seat 27,000 fans.
This stadium will be the best in all of southern
California for viewing of a soccer match, as the seats
are specifically configured for that sport. The
differences in the size of the field compared with
American football are accounted for completely, and
this stadium has been modelled on its predecesor in
Columbus, OH, the city which has the highest-average
attendance among the MLS teams. We think that there
is a direct correlation between the attendance figures
and the soocer-friendliness of that stadium. In 2002,
The Galaxy's attendance rivaled the Crew's, and we
feel that there won't be much of a problem in filling
the seats of the Home Depot Center for every game.
The Home Depot Center is a part of a large complex in
the community of Carson. This complex also will
contain world-class training and public event
facilities in many other sports. The Chargers will
have their 2003 training camp at this complex.
The stadium will also host concerts and other public
events and festivals, as well as non-MLS soccer
tournaments including the 2004 NCAA Men's Finals.
UCLA, the 2002 NCAA Men's Div. 1 champs, will play
some of their tournaments and special games there.
The Home Depot Center is expected to be ready for its
first game by early June, and we will keep you posted.
