Defending A-League (US Division 2) champion goalkeeper Dan Popik and
U.S. u-23 National Team defender Scot Thompson have signed with the
Los Angeles Galaxy, it was announced today by Galaxy VP/GM Doug
Hamilton. Popik will join the club's 18-man senior roster, while
Thompson will fill one the club's six developmental spots. Per team
and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The 23-year-old Popik played three seasons in the A-League with the
Milwaukee Rampage, including helping the club win the 2002 A-League
Championship in a 2-1 overtime win against the Richmond Kickers.
Popik boasts a 40-22-6 all-time record with the Rampage, including
312 saves and 15 shutouts. A 6-3, 200-pound goalkeeper, he was also
named Rampage's 2002 Most Valuable Player, posting a 14-7-4 record
with a 1.09 GAA.
A member of the 1998 U.S. Under-20 National Team for three years,
Popik served as an alternate during the 1999 FIFA World Youth
Championship in Nigeria under current Galaxy head coach Sigi Schmid.
As the number three 'keeper, Popik was behind current MLS goalkeepers
Nick Rimando and Tim Howard.
Popik and Thompson will both be eligible to play with the Galaxy's
first round home-and-home series of the 2003 CONCACAF Champions Cup
against CD Motagua on March 16 at Estadio Nacional in Tegucigalpa,
Honduras.
