The Ghanaian-born attacking midfielder trained with players from the club's
youth academy, and Red Devils manager Alex Ferguson said Friday he would
consider looking at the promising 17-year-old Adu again when he is 18.
"Freddy has done all right," Ferguson told reporters. "He is a good talented
young boy but there is nothing we can do about him because he's not 18."
Under FIFA transfer rules, Adu, who plays for MLS club D.C. United, is not
allowed to transfer to a club outside the United States until he turns 18 on
June 2, 2007. "To go to one of the worlds biggest clubs and get a chance
to train is an honor and a privilege," Adu told The Sun newspaper earlier this
week. "But even if I play well, that doesn't necessarily mean they'll sign me."
Chelsea has also expressed interest in possibly signing Adu at some point.
"What we did was to bring him here to give him an idea of what United was like
so he could see the place and see how
comfortable he was with it," Ferguson said. "He is a very confident and
talented boy but nothing can be done just yet. We will keep a check on him.
Then, when he is 18, we will have to assess what we can do next."
