The world championships track and field were an exceptional success for both African and Afro-American athletes. A medal overview:
- Africans, 12 medals: Ethiopia 6, Kenya 3, Uganda 1, Marocco 1, Ghana 1.
4x gold: Tirunesh Dibaba 5000, Tirunesh Dibaba 10.000, Docus Inzikuru 3000s, Kenya team.
- Afro-Americans (USA), 10 medals.
5x gold: Lauryn Williams 100, Allyson Felix 200, Michelle Perry 100h, Tianna Madison long jump, USA 4x100.
- Afro-Americans (south), 11 medals: Jamaica 6, Cuba 4, Bahamas 1.
4x gold: Tonique Williams 400, Zulia Calatayud 800, Trecia Smith triple jump, Osleidys Menéndez javelin.
- Afro-Europeans, 5 medals: France 4, UK 1.
- Total: 38 medals, 13 gold (in 24 events)
- Individual track only: 20 medals, 8 gold (in 10 events).

"My double victory gives me a lot of satisfaction. Next time, I plan to do something like this again. I never doubted that I would win both races. Meseret Defar gave me tough competition, but I did special 400m practice to have a stronger finishing lap. Maybe I'll attack the 5000m world record next week in Sheffield, but only if the weather conditions allow it. I'm proud of Ethiopia and I'm proud of Africa."
