Wow, last night was great! Thank you everyone for coming out to
Bicycle Sport Shop for the women's only bike maintenance clinic.
About 25 women participated, asked great questions and we even took
time for some guided practice of the skills shared. There was a
raffle for hats and everyone took home LUNA Sport product.

After the clinic, some of us went out to Lady Bird Lake for fun on
the trail. We started with a warm-up loop around Auditorium Shores.
We stopped off to test our strength on the chin up bars and found
that some of us can work circles around the others. It was a
dizzying time full of laughter and an amazing sight of a barely clad
male jogger distracted us but only for a moment! Then we sped over
to do some plyometric work at Lou Neff point. This is where we
gained much attention by runners and ladies relaxing with the
ducks.

Our last stop found us at the stretching section (The Rock).
Visibly having such fun encouraged participation by others. As we
worked on our core, we were joined by another lady just passing by.
She thanked us for the time and asked about our training.

Our evening rounded out with an easy pedal back to Bicycle Sport
Shop.

I have become reacquainted with muscles that have been on vacation
for a while. I don't think I will be squatting or raising my hand to
answer questions today!

Thanks again for a great evening and Jill, can't wait to see the
photos!!!!

Thursday June 5th will be the navigation training night for the Luna
Chix/ARG Women's Adventure Race Training.

The training session will provide practical knowledge regarding
navigation for adventure racing, as well as offer a chance to get
hands-on experience using a map to find checkpoints similar to what
will be required during the ARG Challenge race.

The evening will begin with a navigation for adventure racing
discussion covering: map reading, compasses, pace counting, basic
strategies, and other topics.

We will follow that by dividing up into groups and finding a series of
checkpoints in the area. Expect to travel 1-2 miles on foot.

The training session will begin at 6:00pm and last up to two hours.
We will meet on the South side of the Mopac footbridge on the Lady
Bird Lake Hike and Bike trail.

Please bring a compass, pen/pencil, headlamp or flashlight, cell
phone, and enough food and water for 2 hours.

On Monday June 9th we'll be setting up a short navigation training
course during the regular Monday night trail run time. We'll still
meet at the Barton Creek Greenbelt Hill of Life trailhead at 6:30pm.

The training will be geared towards novice and beginner navigators and
there will be a course cut-off time of 2 hours. Expect the course to
cover 2-3 miles and to have 4-6 checkpoints. Feel free to show up
late, but we'll be picking up the course starting at 8:30pm.

There will not be a formalized class/teaching session associated with
the event, but there will be people there to offer tips, hints, and
help with plotting.

Maps will be available for $5 (or bring your own if you have a 1:24K
topo of the greenbelt with a UTM grid). You will need a compass, a
pen/pencil, headlamp or flashlight, cell phone, food and water for 2
hours, and a UTM plotter (if you have one).

Please RSVP for the event with me so that we can be sure to bring
enough maps. Let me know if you have any questions.

This event is open to everyone and all skill levels are welcome. You
must sign a waiver. Participate at your own risk.

Austin LUNA Chix and Adventure Race Girl Challenge training! Week 1

Well summer has finally hit and we enjoyed the opportunity to spend
quality time sweating out the winter build-up. We started our road to
building strength and endurance with a run throwing in some stair
repeats, core work and upper body building. We transitioned to our
bikes and cooled of with a pedal around Lady Bird Lake.

Everyone shared in some LUNA sport product and had a few laughs or two.

Remember that next week, May 29th, we will meet at 6:00p.m. at Bicycle
Sport shop for a women's bike maintenance clinic. Then at 7:00 we
will pedal over to Lady Bird Lake for a ride and strength building
hours.

Upcoming clinics so check the calendar:

Transitions and other racing hints

Thank you Stephanie and Luna Chix for a great evening of training! If
you missed last night, be sure to join us next week. The training
started with an easy paced jog on the hike and bike trail to the Lamar
Pedestrian Bridge. Five repeats of run down the spiral ramp and back up
the stairs followed by sets of planks. Run back down the hike and bike
trail with a stop at the opossum gazebo for push ups and dips. Lastly
we finished up with a bike down to Congress and back on the hike and
bike. Whew, I needed that and if you are reading this and you are a
woman in Austin you should come out and join us. Everyone can do this
workout no matter what pace or condition you are in. It's free. It's
beginner friendly. There are no excuses! Please mark your
calendars...next Thursday women's bike maintenance clinic at BSS
followed by a bike ride...Thursday June 5th women's navigation
clinic...Saturday June 7th women's bike clinic in Bastrop...June 19th
women's paddle clinic on Town Lake. More details coming. Deb

Disciplines: Navigation based Paddling (river and lake), Mountain Bike (single- and two-track), Trekking/Trail Running (on & off trails) and Fixed Ropes

The Southern Michigan Adventure Club will be hosting the eighth annual Sprint Adventure in Southeast Michigan. The unique race format makes it suitable for the first time racers as well as the seasoned competitor. It will bring together the best aspects of the sport including several surprises to keep it fun, interesting and challenging.

If you've never done a SMAC race before come and see what makes our annual event so special and remember to expect the unexpected! As is tradition, there will be plenty of adventure, prizes, and post-race fun.

This year's race will take place in the environmentally unique Huron River basin. This area includes glacial topography that is unique to SE Michigan. The OCAD produced race maps were created from current GIS data and include all major trails and land features. Navigation instruction will be offered on Friday evening before the race briefing.

If you are planning to do the ARG Challenge in Bastrop on June 28 and
you have not registered, please send me an email with your women's
shirt size. We need a shirt count by June 1st to order the Bettysport
ARG Brooks running shirts like we had last year. If you register after
June 1st we may not have enough so register now! We need 13 paid teams
by June 1st to be able to have the race so sign up now. Thanks, Deb
