Let me tell you what I think of bicycling. I think it has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world. It gives women a feeling of freedom and self-reliance. I stand and rejoice every time I see a woman ride by on a wheel...the picture of free, untrammeled womanhood.

Ask EPA to Act on Dioxin Dangers
Right now, the EPA is forming a scientific advisory panel to study the toxic effects of dioxin, with plans to release a report in 2012. That's great, except we already know dioxin is one of the most toxic chemicals in the world, it's a breast carcinogen and it builds up in our bodies – it's even in breast milk. The EPA knows, too. What more can this panel tell us that we don't already know? What we really want to see is public policy that protects Americans from dioxin exposure.

The Corn Is Organic, but What's in the Can?
The non-profit organization As You Sow and investment advisor Green Century Capital Management have released a report, "Seeking Safer Packaging," in which they rank 20 companies in the packaged food industry based on what they're doing to address bisphenol A (BPA) concerns. BPA is a hormone-disrupting chemical with links to breast cancer and is found in the lining of many food and beverage cans, including those housing food, soda and infant formula. The short story on the report: every one of the companies surveyed could do better in seeking BPA alternatives. Top-ranked Heinz, Nestlé and Hain Celestial are involved in researching alternatives and plan to phase out BPA in their products.

Senator Acts on "Toxic Tub" Report
After reading "No More Toxic Tub," a report released by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, a mom in the U.S. senate called on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to investigate hazardous contaminants in products like baby shampoo and bubble bath. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand's (D-N.Y.) Safe Baby Products Act directs the FDA to test children's personal care products, publicly report the findings and establish good manufacturing practices to reduce hazardous contaminants such as the cancer-causing chemicals 1,4-dioxane and formaldehyde. Both chemicals were found in products tested in the Campaign's report. There are currently no safety standards for formaldehyde or 1,4-dioxane in personal care products sold in the United States.
