 2007 SMAC Adventure Race XL

HOSTED BY
: Southern Michigan Adventure Club
http://www.smacworld.com

DATE: July 21, 2007

ABOUT THE RACE:

We are planning to pack as much adventure as we can in to this year’s event. The event’s unique design makes it suitable for the beginner to the more intermediate competitor. This race captures the essence of an expedition length race but compresses it into 10 hours. All teams are 2-person only with the divisions of male (MM), female (FF) and co-ed (MF). No support crew is needed. Teams will be required to navigate each stage of the race using provided topographical maps. Navigation instructors will be available at the Friday race briefing.

LOCATION:

As with tradition, the exact location of this year’s race will not be disclosed until the mandatory pre-race meeting on July 20th at the Huron Meadows Metropark http://www.metroparks.com/parks/pk_huron_meadows.php. However we can say it will be held in SE Michigan.

DISCIPLINES
:

Canoe:
The canoe sections will not include any whitewater canoeing, but an understanding of water safety is required. Teams are responsible for their own canoes. Heavner Canoe Livery will be providing a pickup and delivery service to the race site. Visit http://www.heavnercanoe.com or call (248) 685-2379 to reserve your equipment.

Mountain Bike:

The course will be mostly two track with some single track. The trails will be moderately technical in most areas.

Orienteering / Rogaine:

Anticipate trails, dense brush, woodlands and swampy lowlands with a significant off-trail section where navigation will be tested. Typical orienteering protocols will be used with orienteering clue cards (hieroglyphic control descriptions).

Fixed Ropes:
Rope stages will be closely monitored by qualified guides from Planet Rock. The ropes will safe and fun!
