I sent this along to Fred, our resident wheels expert. I
also took the attached photos. Good Luck!
Hi Jonas:
The wheels sleds we use here at the USLA are a good design
and work very well, however they do require a few tools to make them. The
brackets we use are 2”x2” L shaped ¼” aluminum. There
is no bending of the bracket necessary so that keeps that easy.
The only critical measurement is drilling to holes for the
axles bolts. They should be drilled so that all the wheels touch the ground.
This means that when drilling, you will need to adjust for the curve of the bow
in the fiberglass runner. I would suggest drilling the runner bolt holes in the
bracket first and then attach the aluminum bracket to the kufen. This way the
bracket will take the shape of the bow. Then you can draw a straight line down
the length of the bracket on which you will drill 7 holes for the axle bolts.
This way, all axles will be the same level when on the sled and the therefore
all wheels on the ground.
If you can use any kind of inline skate wheels but if you
are going to do any wheel training also, a larger diameter and harder durometer
works better.
For the runner bolts you can use any kind of bolt really and
lock washers and for the axle bolts. For the runner bolts, a 5/16”
hardened steel of about
1 ¾” inches length works well. The best thing to do is
thread them right into the bracket, but you can also insert them through the
bracket and then use a lock nut to secure them (this might require a slightly
longer bolt, maybe 2”).
Hoe this helps.

the sled?

Had a question. Anybody have plans or something to
convert my ice sled to a land sled by removing the runners, and putting on
wheels? My uncle made a set of portable start handles a few years ago, and
I'd like to practice my starts with out have to make the trip up to |
