Please let me start by saying that I attend all
NASCAR Races held at NHIS, WCUP, Busch, Trucks, Busch
North and Modifieds. I have been attending races there
since they opened in 1990. This year was the first time
anyone has been seriously injured, fatally
unfortunately, in the tracks history. Now we all feel bad about
what has happened over this year but that is part of
our sport, that is a danger the drivers, teams and
tracks accept and have to live with. NHIS is not the
problem. Not anymore than Michigan was the problem for
Ernie Irvan and Clifford Allison; no more than Daytona
was the problem for Neil Bonnet, Peter Orr and Terry
Labonte (please note that Terry Labonte broke his leg at
the Pepsi 400 this July at Daytona and was racing at
NHIS with the broken leg, not from the NHIS crash as
someone noted in a previous message). In a remarkable
twist of tragic faith two young stars were killed at
the same track in the same year. There is nothing
more than faith here. Sure can the track be banked, of
course it can. Will that end the chance of death, will
it make the track safer, NO! This is a dangerous
sport, it doesn't matter how big, fast, banked racing is
a very dangerous sport and we must accept it. I saw
more exposure about this and shutting NHIS down than I
did when fans were killed at Charlotte watching IRL
races, or when fans were killed at Charlotte when the
bridge collapsed. There will be more deaths at more
tracks, maybe Atlanta, Texas (which was proved to be
flawed and fixed) or Charlotte, tracks that can also be
argued are to fast. So again, NHIS is not at fault. It
is part of racing, as sick as it may seem.
