Re: [actionbent] Re: ABTT Handle Bars

Ah, I see what you're thinking now. I've looked into something similar, and what I found was that the bar end will NOT accept a bar end shifter unless you ream them out. The good news is that a good bike shop should be able to do that for you - assuming you have a GOOD shop around you, It's not uncommon to need to do this because many handle bars have thick walls (the assumption being that few people use bar end shifters these days).  Second problem (as you have apparently already suspected) is that very few bar ends are long and straight enough to work well with brake levers. I did find some that could work, but I decided the gain wasn't worth the effort, so I put it on the back burner. This line of thinking was before I thought up the stem deal, I needed to move the bars forward to unload my shoulders (THE reason for my shift to recumbents in the first place), and the stems allowed all the adjustment I need. I still like the idea though, as such bar ends mounted to cut off stock AB bars, could save quite a bit of weight over the twin stem deal. I guess one could just order a pair of Catrike bars, they should mount directly to the 1 1/8" head tube.
As usual Joel, I look forward to seeing what you come up with.
- By the way, I think I'll FINALLY be home over this weekend and the weather forecast looks good, so I hope to try out Tom's steering mod. I'll keep you posted.

What I am thinking about doing is removing the old curved bar and
using a straight length of 10" with a bar end holding the brake lever
and the bar-end shifter. Similar to the Catrike. So I wanted to know
if the shifter will fit the 4 1/2" long bar-end, and will there be
enough room for brake lever. It looks like it will work, but not sure.

ends, as it has them now. I do know that the AB bars are not reamed on
one end to accept the bar ends, rather the tubing has sufficient ID to
accommodate the shifters. So, if I'm understanding your question, you
would need tubing of the same thickness to use bar ends on a new bar
of the same OD.

Cliff, I ran into a problem with this idea I think, but not sure until I take some measurements, but I think the new handlebars would be on a downward slope....

I'm not sure if they use 1 1/8" head tubes or not, mine is an earlier bushing design so I can't use it for reference, you'd have to ask them. It looks to me as...
