Greetings all,
We have a few projects to be put underway at the Academie that
could use some able help to complete. The plan is to work on this on
Friday during the day (starting at around 10am) and if people were
available at any point tomorrow I am willing to start anytime if
someone's willing to come lend me a hand.
The projects are the following:
Completing the Cubbies: Building new screens and properly tacking on
the backing for the cubbies so we can have a good and serviceable
change area.
Skills needed: Ability to wield a hammer. If anyone has experience
with a table saw that would be great too.
Building Echo Dampening Baffles: The red things you see on the one
side of the salle. We want to complete those on the opposite side to
further dampen our echo chamber.
Skills needed: Hammer wielding. Those with drilling ability and skill
saw ability would be good too.
Completing the Step Between the upper and lower area, stage 1: Doing
floor rips for the facing side of the step that divides the upper and
lower area.
Skills needed: Ability to use a table saw.
If you are available and have the skills I could sure use the help and
I think we'll all enjoy the benefits of these renovations being
completed. Please let me know if you're available to come out
tomorrow (Thursday) or on Friday morning.

The book has arrived and we've unboxed it and done our first perusal
of its pages. I have posted an article and a video on our blog and
YouTube channel. Check it out here -

The book should be on display at the studio sometime in the next
couple weeks for all to see.

Academie Duello's store continues to grow as each new product hits the shelves.
This week we got in our first shipment of Osprey books, a fine line of
well-researched books that span military history from the ancient world to
modern times. With series that specialize on fortifications, campaigns,
military technology and soldiers from all parts of history and the world, and
books that feature full-colour, highly detailed illustrations as well as
comprehensive maps and both colour and black-and-white photographs, these are
not to be missed.
We've started off by bringing in a good spread focusing on Europe and the Near
East from the Middle Ages through the Renaissance. Drop in to check out our
titles, and be aware that if there's anything that we don't have we can always
order it in for you.
See you in the store!

On Monday of this week, Academie Duello's beloved red flag was taken
from out front of our school. It is in the inversed colours to what
you see pictured here on our lonely remaining flag.
I have to say this both saddened and greatly angered me. I don't like
the feeling that in our city every object that we place inside and
outside our homes and our businesses needs to be chained down or
bolted in place. I don't see that our flag has any real street value,
nor salvage value, so this act seems to be simply one of a yahoo
collector or prankster. We're new to the neighborhood (at least to
the ground floor) and I had hoped for a better welcome.
My goal now is to see our flag returned, so I'm putting the call out
to our members, friends, and supporters to keep your eyes out for the
flag and help us track it down and return it home. If anyone knows
where it is, we would gladly accept its return, no questions asked.
Please help us out by forwarding this message and photo along to your
social networks in the Vancouver area and perhaps we can track our
flag down and bring it home. If you have any information don't
hesitate to call us 604-568-9907, or email us info@...
Hey all, I'm looking for someone with Wiki, perferrably WikiMedia
technical experience to help us salvage WMAwiki.org
For those of you who do not know about it; the goal of WMAWiki.org is
to provide a repository for WMA research topics and practical modern
knowledge on the subject. It is already a useful resource with
terminology and techniques up to Blue cord level inputed. However
over the past several months it has fallen into disrepair, mostly
because it has been besieged by spam bots. I have not had the time to
get educated as I need to to clean up the wiki spam and get things
protected. I'm hoping that someone out there in our student base or
friends does have this knowledge or is interested in acquiring it and
can help us put this great resource back into use.
Here are a couple cool articles that can give you an idea of what it
can be used for:

If you're interested and have the knowledge, please let us know and
save our poor wiki!

This Wednesday is Remembrance Day. During the day we will be
observing Remembrance day events in the community so there will be no
Noon class. In the evening we will be holding classes as normal while
taking a few moments to observe those who have fought for Canada.
Classes start at 6:00pm with Youth Class, 6:30pm for SwordFit/Warrior
Fundamentals, 7:00pm for Taste the Renaissance, 7:30pm for Mastery
class -- all as normal.
Those who usually come out to Wednesday lunch time class, please come
out to any of our other classes for a make-up. Tuesday and Thursday
fundamentals classes at 5:30pm are great to hit. This week will also
be longsword in SwordFit so come out any evening at 6:30 or Saturday
at 10am to get your longsword fix for the week.
There was a hat that was lost potentially at the academie today, Saturday Nov
7th. It had pink cat ears on top and draping pom poms. If anyone sees it please
post back here with info.

Hello all, if anyone is available to help out during the day tomorrow,
Greg and I are working on the first stage of sound dampening which
will involve covering and suspending some sound dampening material we
have acquired. If you're available to pitch in a hand to this worthy
project, please let me know. We're going to start up on things around
10am tomorrow morning.

A Vancouver Film Student is looking to do a recording session with someone who
has full plate armour. He says he is willing to make it "worth their while." It
is for a film project. The sooner the better--he's in school for another month.
He advises that any recording done will be accessible to all students in the
school but that he will be recording sound only, not images.

things and make sure they did not pick up her mask by mistake? It's
labelled Nina on the back tab.
Thanks
PS. Please be thorough when taking your stuff home with you, and
ensure that you have indeed grabbed your own equipment. There are
black and silver marking pens available at the front desk that can be
used to clearly mark equipment with your name.
My gorget and I have been re-united ( Thank Gawd)
Thanks to all of you who looked around for me...I sure appreciate it...All's

I know that a sword breaks only once every few months, and I don't think we've had two go out in one night before... Let alone to the same person.
I am grinning not so much because I was pleased, but more because I couldn't help but be amused by the absurdity of my situation.
I just had to laugh... there was nothing left to do.
As to breaking the second sword... Of course -- the battle's not done, so what's a warrior to do but re-arm and get back to it. The big question that I was asked that I still don't have an answer for is: "How do you break a tang?"

Clang - clang - clang!
These are the usual sounds of the Sword Fit program's "Longsword night"
and they rang loud, strong and may I say somewhat-incessantl y in
training last night.
Clang - clang - clang!
Clang - clang - ... "sprang" ...clatter . ...
'Sprang'? 'Sprang' followed by 'clatter'??
The sound of a shattered sword blade is unique ... more so when it
echo's long and loud through the brick-walled megaphone that is
currently our salle! There was a collective intake of breath when all
of us turned to the clattering loose-metal- on-floor sound - and saw Adam with two-thirds of a blade in his fist ... the other third of his 'Angus Trim' at his boots! We all feel for someone who loses a blade in combat or training - but his 'Trim'? You could hear our collective groans of condolence from the street.
But, those that know Adam know also his good humour ... and besides,
class was not over yet! Re-arm and back to battle!
Clang - clang - clang!
Clang - clang - clang!
Clang - clang - ... "sprang" ...clatter . ...
Yup. Another sword went to the great scabbard in the sky! Two in one
night!! What are the odds?
So we in the other classes and the 'lounge' looked around for the latest victim of circumstance ... and there, standing across from a bemused partner ... was Adam, holding the tattered tang of a hewn Hanwei!!
I wish I had a witty way of ending this ... but I don't think anybody
could have matched Devon's comment as he surveyed the dual damage ...
"Adam, I name thee 'Sword Slayer' ".
All hail "Sword Slayer" ... and please Adam, accept our group
condolences as well. (A 'Trim' .. he broke a 'Trim'!!)

First off, thank you to everyone who has pitched in and helped out to date on getting our new space in order. There is really no way we could have afforded time wise or money wise to expand to a new space without all of the volunteered help that we've had. Thank you for making this possible!
We are working on having a big Academie thank you party and an opening Gala and open house toward the end of November. Our goal is to get a lot of activities done in the space so we can feel proud of a final product when we get to these events. That means we'll need as much help as we can muster over the next few weeks from those who are available and have a desire to be a part of building the new Academie.
This week a couple projects on my mind are:
1. Dealing with the fly problem. I need a couple bloody minded, fly hating, students to come in perhaps this afternoon or tomorrow afternoon to help
us finish off the flies. The plan is to close the doors to each individual space, kill all the flies in them, then identify where they are coming from, then we'll probably spray to kill off their breeding potential. If you're available please let me know.
2. Sealing the bricks. We need to finish cleaning up the bricks (small job at this point, thanks to Katie, Teri, James, and Cheridah), then we need to roll on a sealant that will help keep the bricks together and thus create less dust in the space and less slipperiness. This is best as a daytime job or after class on Saturday.
Once we get our mouldings and such together we'll need help putting in our baseboards and mouldings, so I'll keep everyone posted. Demolition of the wall to the lounge is still coming. Don't worry I have not forgotten about those who wanted to wield the big hammers. :)

Hi everyone,
My gorget is missing from last night's practice...I will need everyone's
assistance to find it.It is a standard Academie Duello Gorget, black leather with
Brass fleur de lis like hinges, with three overlapping scales to protect the
vertebrae and is inscribed Mike on one of the scales.
If anyone finds it in the loaner equipment or otherwise could they please
give it to the front desk...Thank you kindly,
Mike
I took a look at the ramp, the odd gradeints are going to be a realy big pain
but it look like it is made of two layers of plywood (you can see the
second layer through the cracks) which is plenty thick enough. Does
anyone know it it is exterior grade plywood? Installing tile on wood
that may absorb water and swell is not recomended though it can and is
done. We may want to get an underlay like this stuff
http://www.schluter.com/6_1_ditra_download.aspx.
I can't come in Wednesday. Other days are good morning thru afternoon.

[mailto:academieduello@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of Devon Boorman Sent: Wednesday, October 21, 2009 1:30 AM To: academieduello@yahoogroups.com Subject: [academieduello] manuscript auction - be a part of buying a
first edition Capo Ferro
Greetings all,
An exciting opportunity has come to our attention. There is
a large auction of historical fencing manuscripts taking place this week in
Amsterdam. This would be a great opportunity for us to acquire one or possibly
two of the original fencing manuscripts on which our art is based. We
could then include these manuals in our museum and library to be available for
all of us to reference and really connect with the original works. We
would also be one of the only schools that I know of to have original manuscripts
in our library and not just recent facsimilies.
The opportunity is now but the expense may be prohibitive for us to do alone,
especially if we would like to acquire two manuscripts -- my understanding is
that many of these do not come up for sale very often. What we would like
to do to make this possible is collaborate with some of our students to
collectively purchase at least one of these manuscripts. By contributing in the
purchase you would own a share of the manuscript and would have special access
to it, along with acknowledgement in our museum display. And of course
the satisfaction of being a part in having an awesome manuscript available to
all of us.
Euro conversion to Canadian dollars can be most easily done at www.xe.com if you're interested in what the
bidding prices represent in local currency.
If you would like to be a part of this, please contact me privately and let me
know of your interest and how much you feel you might be able to
contribute. Final sale price will be unknown until we win the
auction. We would establish our maximum bids and overall maximum based on
the support we're able to generate.
If anyone has any connections with collectors or others that may be interested
in being involved in helping us acquire one of these manuscripts, please let me
know.
