Belt Promotions: No testing has been held since February 6th. Wayne
Krysowaty is preparing for his black belt test. Right now
tentatively I'm looking at Tuesday May 8th, 2007 for the next
testing date. With the TKD tournament coming up May 5th I thought
it would be wise to hold off on testing until after the tournament.

Business: Please have monthly dues paid by April 10th. A few of you
still owe dues for March. Please pay ASAP so I can settle the dojo's
final bills. Just a reminder that the monthly fee is $50 per person
or a family rate of $75 month for two people.

Schedule: I will be gone April 3rd & 4th for a Street Survival
seminar. It's designed for law enforcement and will cover various
aspects of defensive tactics and officer safety issues. Thus there
will be NO CLASS Tuesday April 3rd. Instead we will have class
Thursday April 5th at 7 PM.

Upcoming Events: May 5th there will be the annual International
Taekwondo Tournament in Clark, SD. Competitors come from as far away
as Canada, Mexico, and Puerto Rico to compete. This is a big
tournament and it's sponsored by Master Sanchez of Clark TKD. I plan
on going and hope many of you will compete. We are going to start
getting ready for this tournament so bring your sparring gear to
class.

Dojo: Training has been going okay this last month. Everyone is
making good progress. I had hoped to have more students continue
their training. Class will continue to be held once a week on
Tuesday nights at 7 PM. Again it will be a combined class, all ages
and ranks. The blue mat fits nicely in my living room surprisingly
and that was the main area that we trained on in the old dojo. I
still have a debt of several $1000 to get paid off before I will
even consider looking for a new dojo.

Other: I recommend being a member of our Yahoo Groups webpage:
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/aberdeenkenpo/ This is the best
way to stay on top of what is going on with the AKKA. There are lots
of photos and good info.
Season 5 of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF 5) begins Thursday April 5th
only on Spike TV. This season will feature lightweights. It's as
real as it gets.

I'm sorry to hear about your divorce and everything else that seems
to be going on. I guess it explains why the phone number was
disconnected when I tried calling. I was in Karate in Springfield,
MO for 2 years and have been trying to find a place to continue my
training. That was quite a while ago that I was in Karate since
after that I lived in Tulare and Redfield, so they didn't have any
thing dealing with karate. I know they had a trainer come to the
school every week or something, but I've been looking for something
alittle more serious and also I didn't want to have to start all
over again and go at the same pace as everyone else. Anyways, do you
know any places around Aberdeen that train? I suppose I could wait
until the summer after this one when I move to Minneapolis
(hopefully) but this is something I've been wanting to continue ever
since I left Springfield.
Thanks,
Gloria

Belt Promotions: No testing was held since February 6th. Wayne
Krysowaty is preparing for his black belt test. Hopefully we will
have our second black belt promotion by May. The next regular
testing will be announced in class.

Business: A few of you still owe dues for February. Please pay ASAP
so I can settle the dojo's final bills. There will be a new fee
schedule for those of you who wish to continue your training under
my instruction (see below for details).
Please be sure that you have all of your equipment and gear. Be
sure to wash your uniforms before storing them otherwise they will
stain.

plan on going and hope many of you will compete.

Dojo: I'm sure everyone is wondering what the plan is since the
dojo at 506 NE 1st Ave is now shut down. I made a commitment to
teach you and will continue to honor it. For now we will be
training at my house. You will need to bring your personal gear
(uniform, etc) along each time and I'm not going to store you stuff
at my house. My address and phone number are listed at the bottom
of the page.
For now we will have class once a week on Tuesday nights at 7 PM.
It will be a combined class, all ages and ranks. This summer things
may change. I will also be adjusting the fee accordingly. The new
fee schedule will be $50 a month per person, $25 each additional.
So for two people in the same family it will be $75 a month. I feel
this is fair as I still have a large debt created by the dojo that I
need to get paid off eventually. Anyone who paid quarterly will be
given credit for March dues.
Also, I will not be accepting any new students at this time.
After I rebuild my personal life I will focus on rebuilding the
dojo. I'm also currently looking into re-enlisting in the US Army.
My old unit (3rd Infantry Division) is on alert for its 5th
deployment to Iraq. It all depends on if I can get my knee problem
sorted out and okayed by the Army.

UFC 68: Uprising will be held March 3rd live on PPV. Tim Sylvia
will be fighting Randy Couture. Chris Lytle will be fighting Matt
Hughes. Rich Franklin will be fighting Jason MacDonald. Jason
Lambert will be fighting Renato Sobral.

Hey guys,

It's been a while since I checked in. Hope you guys are all doing
well, and keeping up with the arts.

As we all know, last October's storm brought Buffalo, New York record
breaking snow levels and knocked out power to over 400,000 homes and
businesses. According to the Associated Press, 12 reported deaths
were atrributed to this storm as well as many injuries, such as
hypothermia and carbon monoxide poisoning from improperly vented
generators and gas stoves used for heat.

Training outside can be a lot of fun during this time of the year,
especially if there is a lot of snow. It's a lot harder to throw
someone with heavy clothing and boots on. And, of course, when the
wind chill is below zero, I always cover my mouth to protect my lungs.

Belt Promotions: No testing was held in December. The next testing
will be held January 30th at 6:45 PM. As always friends and family
are welcome to attend.

Schedule: We will be taking the 2007 class photo on Tuesday January
30th at 6:30 PM right before testing. Everyone should be present and
in full uniform. If you can not make it let me know ASAP so we can
figure out another day to take the photo.
There may be NO CLASS on January 23rd or 25th as Mr. Lammon may be
at a ground fighting & knife defense instructor school at the SD
police academy in Pierre, SD. Announcement will be made in class.

New Students: Please welcome Terry Wacholz to the dojo. Good luck
with your training. Just a reminder that if someone you refer to the
dojo joins you get 10% off your membership dues as long as that
person stays a member. Bring in 2 people and get a 20% discount. We
could use 4 additional students to keep the dojo up and running.

Business: Just a reminder that quarterly and monthly membership fees
are due this month. Please have dues paid by January 9th. If you've
ordered gear or equipment please pay for it right away.
As far as the dojo goes we're going for the gamble. January should
be okay, February will be tight, and March I don't even want to
think about. We should be able to pick up a few more students over
the next few months. I'm thinking about having a tournament in
February. I'm also working with the Aberdeen American News to get
another story on the dojo in the newspaper.
We will also be taking orders for the window decals again that are
personalized with your name. They are only $15 each. We will also
have bumper stickers available for $10 each. My favorite reads "Your
child is a taekwondo black belt - that's cute. Mine studies Kenpo".
We still have some of the new style AKKA t-shirts for sale for $15.
Student manuals are also available for $20. These are quick fixes
but we really need a larger student base.

Upcoming Events: Tentatively February 17th we will be hosting the 1st
Annual Aberdeen Open Karate Tournament. I hope to have it at the
Washington Street Gym. Parents, friends...we will need volunteers at
the registration table and as score keepers, etc. I plan on having
both TKD and Kenpo sparring along with a weapons demonstration
competition. See soon-to-be-posted flyer for more details.
Mr. Sanchez (Clark Taekwondo) has invited our dojo to Puerto Rico
for a tournament and some fun in the sun, April 9th -16th, 2007. The
Olympic sparring taekwondo tournament will be April 14th in San
Juan. Mr. Sanchez is from Puerto Rico and is taking students from
various schools in the area. If you would like to go and need more
info please contact me and I will fill you in on the details. Flyer
posted on bulletin board.

Dojo: We had our Christmas party December 26th and watched Teenage
Mutant Ninja Turtles II: Secret of the Ooze. We had pizza and ice
cream and everyone had a good time.
Congratulations to Zack, Shae, JD, Murphy, and Madison who all
completed in the 1st Redfield Taekwondo Tournament that was held
Saturday December 9th. Everyone did a good job and represented the
dojo well.

MMA: Training days and times will be announced during regular
classes. Training is hard. Workouts last around 3 hours and are
tough. We run 2 miles and do hundreds of sit-up just as the warm up.

Traditional Karate: Everyone has been making good progress on kenpo
striking set # 1. Sets allow you to work on flowing from one
technique to another.

Kobudo: I'm going to start working with students in class on bo staff
techniques just as we have worked on baton stuff in the past. We
have a fe at the dojo but I'd recommend you purchase you own. Basic
bo staffs start at $25.

Other: UFC 66 was held December 30th. Chuck Liddell fought Tito Ortiz
for the light heavyweight title. Liddell won the fight and remains
the champion. The next fight is UFC 67: All or Nothing on February
3rd live on PPV.

Below are the class attendance totals for all students who trained at
the dojo in 2006. No one including me had 100% attendance. Although
many of the people listed below are no longer students I thought it
would be good to post everyone's stats to you can see how you
compared to other students. Hopefully you can make it a point to
improve your attendance in 2007. The more you train the better you
will become. Tournaments and MMA workouts are NOT included in your
totals however testings and class parties are included. * denotes no
longer a student in training.

2006 CLASS ATTENDANCE
116 classes (including testings & parties) offered

Part of being a good martial artist is being a good citizen and being
involved in community and country.

Former President Gerald R. Ford the nation's 38th president, and the
only one elected to neither the office of president nor vice
president, died at his desert home at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Ford was the longest living former president, surpassing Ronald
Reagan, who died in June 2004, by more than a month.

Ford was an accidental president. A Michigan Republican elected to
Congress 13 times starting in 1948 before becoming the first
appointed vice president in 1973 after Spiro Agnew left amid scandal,
Ford was Richard Nixon's hand-picked successor, a man of much
political experience who had never run on a national ticket. He was
as open and straightforward as Nixon was tightly controlled and
conspiratorial.

Ford took office moments after Nixon resigned in disgrace over
Watergate.

Ford became the first vice president appointed under the 25th
amendment to the Constitution.

On Aug. 9, 1974, after seeing Nixon off, Ford assumed the office. The
next morning, he still made his own breakfast and padded to the front
door in his pajamas to get the newspaper.

In November 1976 he lost the election to Jimmy Carter. He was the
last surviving member of the Warren Commission, a group that was
tasked with investigating the assassination of John F. Kennedy and
concluded that Lee Harvey Oswald was the lone assassin.

Twice people tried to assassinate President Ford in September 1975.
Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme, a 26-year-old follower of Charles Manson,
was arrested after she aimed a semiautomatic pistol at Ford on Sept.
5 in Sacramento, CA. A Secret Service agent grabbed her and Ford was
unhurt.

Seventeen days later, Sara Jane Moore, a 45-year-old political
activist, was arrested in San Francisco after she fired a gun at the
president. Again, Ford was unhurt. Both women are serving life terms
in federal prison.

He was born Leslie King on July 14, 1913, in Omaha, Neb. His parents
were divorced when he was less than a year old, and his mother
returned to her parents in Grand Rapids, MI where she later married
Gerald R. Ford Sr. He adopted the boy and renamed him.

Funeral arrangements are pending. His body will lay in state in the
Capitol Rotunda.

On 12/9/06 several clubs members competed in the 1st annual Refield
Taekwondo Tournament in Redfield, SD. The event was held at the
high school gym.

This was a good tournament for those who had never competed before.
It was small enough to be fun where you didn't have to worry about
getting lost in the crowd yet big enough for some good action.

Zack was first up from the AKKA team. He was a little fireball and
gave it his all. He did a great job of blocking their kicks and
countering with strikes of his own. He won the first match but had
to fight again right away against a kid that was fresh and had not
fought yet. Zack only got a minute break between matches. He did an
outstanding job and ended up getting 2nd place in his division. Had
he had longer to recover or if the other kid wouldn't have been
fresh there's no doubt in my mind that Zack would've gotten 1st
place.

Murphy and Madison were up next. Murphy got a pass on the first
event. During her fight the high score kept going back and forth
between her and the other little girl she was sparring. In the
second round with a minute to go the score was 5 to 7 with Murphy
down by 2 points. She went to kick the same time the other girl
went to kick and their knees collided. The other girl fell to the
mat and started crying. She was unable to continue. Murphy was
able to shake it off and was ready to continue. The match was
stopped as they announced the other little girl as the winner. I
did not agree with call and it was address after the division was
done. According to the rules if a competitor is injured and unable
to continue they forfit and the other person wins automatically.
This is how it is in karate and all other types of sports unless the
injury resulted from an illegal/prohibited strike/kick. I talked to
one of the corner judges who agreed that Murphy should have won but
it was too late. Murphy got 3 place over all.

Madison was in the same division. She did a good job and has made a
noticable improvement in sparring. She lost the first match but won
the second match when the other girl quit and did not want to spar
anymore. Because of the mix up with Murphy's fight, Madison was
awarded 5th place.

Shae stepped into the ring next. His first opponent was a jack
rabbit. The kid kept running all over the ring, which was a very
large ring (way bigger than karate regulation size). The kid, who
was a green belt would be running away from Shae then jump up and
throw a back kick. Add to that the kid was a lot taller than Shae
and had a very small chest protector that about at Shae's head level
made it an interesting fight. Shae did good in round 2 and let the
kid run around and did not chase him to conserve energy. Shae
started picking his shots and got some good ones in.

During the second match Shae did a better job and mixed it up good
with the other kid. He took a hard shot to the nose but shaked it
off and kept on kicking. In the second round he took a full force
kick to the throat which stopped the match. I did not see the other
kid get a warning for kicking to the throat and I went with Shae to
the medic station so I don't know if anything was said or not. This
was Shae's first tournament and he was only 11 years old but had to
spar 12 and 13 year olds. At age 12 kicks are allowed to the head
(not the neck or throat however). Shae had never practiced kicking
to the head or having to block kicks to the head. He did an
outstanding job fighting older more experienced kids and got 4th
place in his division.

Next up from the AKKA team was JD. This was JD's first tournament.
He got matched up against a brown belt who had close to 100lbs on
JD. The brown belt was also a cop. Round one was good with JD
coming out swinging. The brown belt did deliver some very hard
kicks. Towards the end of the first round he delivered a kick to
JD's head knocking him to the ground. JD was dazed (I could see his
eyes rolling in his head) but he got back up and wanted to
continue. Round 2 was tough. At one point the brown belt grabbed a
hold of JD (which I was told was not allowed in TKD tournaments).
JD took several more ahrd shots but was finally able to start
scoring. He did a good job for his first tournament and ened up
with a 3rd place medal.

I ended up fighting Big Jake for the championship black belt
division. Now there are not that many people I have to look up to
considering I'm 6'3" tall. I had to look up to Big Jake, who had to
be at least 6'6". It was a good fight and probabyl the most evenly
matched all day. Jake kept trying to kick to my head but I was able
to block his attempts. Several times he tried coming in with a kick
and I fired one of my own and he ate the full force of the kick. I
came close once to knocking him down but no luck. I was ahead by 2
points after the first round. Going into round it was more fo the
same. We delivered hard blows to one another. We kept getting
locked up and it was all I could do to resist sweeping him and
taking him to the ground for a choke. At one piont her locked up my
arm and wouldn't let go. The ref didn't step in as I think he was
afraid of accidentally getting hit. A few times my (!*@#^$
mouthguard went flying. It was a hard fight and I thought I had won
it but in the end Jake's hand was raised in victory by 1 point. Oh
well. It was fun. I had not been to a tournament (as a fighter) in
about 5 years. I hadn't been to a TKD tournment as a fighter in
almost a decade so it was good to get back into it.

Over all it was a good time. I think everyone learned a lot and
hopefully had fun. It's good to network with other martial art
schools throughout the state. Master Sanchez invited our dojo to a
tournament in Puerto Rico this next spring. The tournment is an all
day event and the rest of days you relax on the beahc and just hang
out. Maybe I'll win the lottery by then, as I don't know how I'm
even going to pay the dojo rent in March...but that's another post.

Merii Kurisumasu Karateka!!
(That is how you say Merry Christmas in Japanese.)

Belt Promotions: Testing was held in November 28th. Congratulations
to the following on their promotions: Shae Miller, purple belt;
Madison Lammon, blue belt; Murphy Lammon, blue belt; Zack bumpous,
blue belt; Brandon Bumpous, blue belt; John Boggs, green belt.
Kodi Hanson received his purple stripe for passing the purple belt
equivalency test. The next testing was going to be held December
19th but because of Christmas and New Years it's a short training
month plus we have our Christmas party. Further I don't think
anyone would be ready to test anyway. There will be no testing in
December. The next testing will be held in January 2007.

Schedule: Nothing different this month however the days we have
class may change beginning in January.

New Students: None in November. Just a reminder that if someone you
refer to the dojo joins you get 10% off your membership dues as long
as that person stays a member. Bring in 5 people and get a 50%
discount. Bring in 10 people and train for free. It's crunch
time. We need 5 additional students or this may be the last month
the dojo will be open.

Business: Just a reminder that monthly membership fees are due this
month. Please have dues paid by December 7th. If you've ordered
gear or equipment please pay for it right away.

Upcoming Events: The 1st Redfield Taekwondo Tournament will be held
Saturday December 9th, 2006 at 11 AM. Preregistration by December
2nd is only $25. It's $30 after that and at the door. Master
Sanchez of Clark also has a school in Redfield. It will be a
sparring only tournament. This would be an excellent tournament to
participate in if you've never competed before. See bulletin board
flyer for more details.
We will be having our Christmas party December 26th beginning at
6:30 PM lasting until approx 8:30 PM. We will be watching a movie
again and will probably order pizza. We will be watching Teenage
Mutant Ninja Turtles II: Secret of the Ooze. It's rated PG and is
88 minutes long. Again if any parent has a problem with this movie
please let me know ASAP. You can bring your own drink if you wish.

Dojo: I will make an announcement toward the end of the month as to
the fate of the dojo. I'll try to keep it going if at all
possible. For those of you still training, you made a commitment to
train and I made a commitment to teach you. Even if the dojo closes
I will work something out to keep teaching those who want to learn.
I do have a plan in place to get the dojo back on a good financial
base. I'm hoping to host a seminar in January or February 2007.
I'd also like to host a tournament next summer or fall. Further
ways to raise fund include selling more AKKA t-shirts and we willl
be taken the 2007 class picture sometime in January. I'm also going
to start work on a DVD set covering the various belt levels as a
reference tool. This way you can pop a disc into your DVD player at
home and go through the material anytime you wish. I hope to start
work on the yellow belt material this month.

KPFT: Students took the Karate Physical Fitness Test last month.
Again the KPFT is just a tool you can you to measure and monitor
your own fitness levels. We only did the push-up and sit-up
portions as it was too cold and dark outside to do the run. We'll
be taking it again probably in March.

MMA: I'm bringing back the MMA class but this time there are going
to be a few changes. First it may not always be on Wednesday
nights. If you decide to train you need to be serious and not
complain about going for a 2 mile run or doing lap swimming.
Conditioning and proper fitness is the key to winning a fight. If
you can not run 2 miles you have no business inside a full contact
ring. We're not looking to set any speed records just be able to
complete the 2 mile run in a timely manner. Also for the good of
the dojo you will be required to train in kenpo. How can you expect
to win fights if you don't know any strikes? I don't have the time
to get people caught up if they don't even know the basics of
striking. Also this will assist the dojo in keeping the doors open
financially. $35 a month to train in MMA was not worth what it cost
just to have the place open. If you want to train in MMA you will
need to be a standard paying AKKA member. Training is real. It's
rough and you will get some minor injuries. Don't expect to train
in MMA and not get a few bumps and bruises. You will be sore after
training. It's hard work but it's also a lot of fun.

Traditional Karate: I've decided to bring back the kenpo sets. Sets
are similar to katas but slightly different. They are not belt
specific. Sets assist in teaching and reinforcing the basic
fundamentals.

Kobudo: Just a reminder that you are required to obtain at least one
weapons patch prior to testing for black belt. Do not put this off
until you are a brown belt. As much baton (kenpo sticks) work as we
do in class picking up the escrima patch should be easy for most of
you.

Other: UFC 66 will be held December 30th, live on PPV. Chuck Liddell
vs Tito Ortiz for the title. This should be one of the best fights
this year.
Be sure to check out our Yahoo Groups webpage:
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/aberdeenkenpo/ You can stay in
contact with Mr. Holland via his email address on the site. I post
pics from time to time.
There is a good article about kenpo in the January 2007 issue of
Black Belt magazine(which is on sale right now). The focus of the
article is on Jeff Speakman and what he is calling Kenpo 5.0. He's
updated a lot of the kenpo techniques to go along with the changing
times. He's also added ground fighting to the training and
eliminated some of the repetitive techniques and those that just
don't work. Gee, our dojo has been doing that very same thing for
the past two years. If you want to know what the cover looks like
there is a pic of it under the miscellaneous folder in the photos
section of the webpage. I've been invited to join the World
Organization of Mixed Martial Arts by Grandmaster Jack Stern.
Grandmaster Stern began his training back in 1947 while serving in
the military in Korea and Japan. When he returned to the US he
opened up the Paja Dojo in 1960. I've avoided parent organizations
because most of them start dictating what you can and cannot teach.
They also demand that all students in a dojo belong or they will not
recognize their ranks. From what I've read the WOMA isn't like
that. We can teach what we've been teaching. We don't have to follow
their curriculum and there are no yearly membership fees and
association fees. I'm seriously considering joining the WOMA. I
could even test for my 3rd degree black belt through their
organization. We'll see.

A special note from Mr. Holland: Mr. Holland says hi and happy
holidays. He hopes everyone is having a good time training. He's is
trying to find a dojo to train at. He's having a good time down in
AZ and wishes us well with our training.

A special note from Mr. Lammon: Over the past two years I've had the
great pleasure of being your instructor. At times it's been a
roller coaster of a journey along the martial path. When I decided
to open up a dojo in November 2004 I wanted to establish a real
dojo. I didn't want to start yet another shopping mall martial arts
school that taught watered down sport karate. I wanted to teach
real martial arts as close to how they are taught in Okinawa and
Japan as I could. I made the decision from the beginning not to
charge any belt testing fees. I had seen this become a big problem
in my former taekwondo and karate schools where I trained. If you
earn a belt then you should actually earn it, not buy it. I had
seen instructors have students test who were not ready because they
wanted the belt testing fee. I also saw some heated arguments
between instructors and parents when a child paid a testing fee they
did not pass. I wanted to avoid all those problems and had to power
to do so.
I also was tired of all the hidden fees in martial arts clubs.
Sure it only costs $25 a month to train at such and such school but
that's just an introductory fee. Most places I've trained at or
checked into have yearly association fees that students have to pay
for their ranks to be recognized. Then there are sparring fees and
weapons fees. Every time you turn around there is another fee. You
are slowly bled dry with all the hidden fees. Again I had the
ability to avoid this mess. I decided to charge a flat monthly
rate. I also had the ability to focus on teaching karate, not
making the all mighty buck. I made the decision not to turn anyone
away simply because they could not afford it. For me teaching is
about passing the martial knowledge on to the next generation. Many
of you were not even born when I first put on a gi began kicking a
heavy bag. The only thing I asked in return was for people to be
dedicated to training. Sadly American culture is very different
from the culture in Japan and Okinawa. Asking for dedication 2
hours a week was too much for some of your fellow former students I
guess.
I also decided to be honest with my students from the first day
they stepped in the dojo. Too many people make it to black belt
only to be let down because they did not receive super human powers
where they can levitate and have X-ray vision. I've told you all
that reaching black belt won't turn you into Bruce Lee or Jackie
Chan. I wanted to do my little part to help get the martial arts
back on the right path. Too many school pride themselves in how
many black belts they promote. When someone makes black belt in my
dojo they will be a real black belt and should be able to handle
themselves should the need arise.
Over all I have learned a lot. It's taken a lot of time and money
but the result has been worth it. Helping you all discover the
meaning of being a martial artist has been a pleasure. I'm glad to
be able to pass on the kenpo knowledge to the next generation. You
will be the ones to pass it on to those who have not even been born
yet. Kenpo is not about speed, it's about power. And knowledge is
power. Mele Kalikimaka!

Belt Promotions: Testing was held in October 24th. Congratulations
to the following on their promotions: Wayne Krysowaty, brown belt.
Kodi Hanson received his orange stripe for passing the orange belt

November 28th at 6:30 PM.. As always parents and friends are
welcome at testings. Testing usually last longer than an hour
depending on how many people are testing.
We are once again able to videotape testings. It wasn't the
camera after all, we just had 2 bad tapes in a row. What are the
odds?

Student of the Quarter: Zack Bumpous has been chosen as the student
of the quarter for July through September 2006. Zack was presented
with a trophy for outstanding dedication and martial spirit.
Students must be positive in the dojo and work to make it a better
place. You need to be focused on karate during class and take your
training seriously. Not once have I had to say anything to Zack to
stay busy training or stop goofing around. He's is focused when he
is at the dojo and trains hard. Congratulations to Zack!! You
earned it.

Schedule: There will be NO class November 23rd because of
Thanksgiving Day.

New Students: None in October. Just a reminder that if someone you

We are looking at having our Christmas party December 26th at 6:30
PM until 8:30 PM. We will be watching a movie again and will
probably order pizza. If this date doesn't work let me know ASAP.
I was planning on watching the boxing classic Rocky but since it
doesn't sound like any adults will be attending the Christmas party
we will be watching Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: Secret of the
Ooze. It's rated PG and is 88 minutes long. If any parent has a
problem with this movie please let me know ASAP.

Dojo: Being a responsible martial artist means being a responsible
citizen too. Be sure to vote Tuesday November 7th. Countless
soldiers have fought and died over the past 230 years to defend your
rights which includes your right to vote.
Mr. Shultis and Mr. Lammon went to Fargo, ND for the tournament
October 28th and had a good time.

MMA: Due to a lack of participants I have decided to suspend MMA
classes until further notice.

Other: UFC 65: Bad Intentions will be held November 18th, live on
PPV. Matt Hughes will be fighting Georges St Pierre for the
welterweight title. This may be another shocker of a fight as Rich
Franklin lost his belt in the middleweight title fight to Anderson
Silva at UFC 64: Unstoppable.

Congratulations to the following on their promotions: Brandon
Bumpous, Zack Bumpous, Murphy Lammon, and Madison Lammon were all
promoted to junior blue belts. Kodi Hanson received his yellow
stripe for passing the yellow belt equivalency test.. The next
tentative testing will be held Tuesday, October 24th at 6:30 PM..
Parents and friends are welcome at testings.

Schedule: We will be having a combined class, all ranks and ages,
October 10th at 6:30 PM. There will be NO class October 31st
because of Halloween. However we will have trick-or-treating at the
dojo from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM.

New Students: None this month. We have recently lost 5 students
(see bottom of page). We need a minimum of 5 new students to keep
the dojo up and running past December. So if you know anyone who's
interested in karate tell them about the dojo. If someone you refer
joins you get 10% off your membership dues as long as that person
stays a member. Bring in 5 people and get a 50% discount. Bring in
10 people and train for free.

Business: Just a reminder that quarterly membership fees are due
this month. Please have dues paid by October 5th. Remember it's
$200 per quarter and you must pay the entire amount to receive the
discount otherwise it's $75 a month.
Many people have ordered gear this last month but still have not
paid for it. Please pay for your gear right away to help us keep
the budget on track. There's around a $250 outstanding total
balance on gear right now.

Upcoming Events: The 11th Annual Fargo Open Martial Arts
Championships featuring semi-contact karate, taekwondo, and
submission grappling will be held October 28th, 2006. Pre-
registration fee is $40 by October 20th and $50 after that date.
This tournament will also have a forms, weapons, and breaking
competitions.

Dojo: On September 5th Mr. Holland surprised everyone and showed up
at the dojo. He taught the Kenpo Kids class as no one showed up for
the basic class. It was great to have him back from AZ and he is
welcome at the dojo anytime.

MMA: We've been working more on the ground and pound stuff and have
been doing some more boxing.

Other: Season 4 of the Ultimate Fighter: The Comeback is on weekly
on Spike TV. Sometimes there is some blood as it's as real as it
gets. UFC 64 will be held October 14th, live on PPV.
Shamrock vs Ortiz: The Final Conflict will be live October 10th
live on Spike TV for FREE. Ken Shamrock and Tito Ortiz are going
to fight for a third and final time. Dana White, president of the
UFC, is giving back to the fans by having this fight free to give
the fans what they paid $40 for during UFC 61 and didn't get.
Be sure to check out our Yahoo Groups webpage:
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/aberdeenkenpo/ You can stay in
contact with Mr. Holland via his email address on the site.
One last thing. The martial arts are supposed to be full of
respect, courtesy, loyalty, and integrity. Good manners go a long
way and are not just nice but are expected in the dojo. Things like
please and thank you, no sir and yes sir, never go out of style.
It's simply courteous to inform your instructor if you are quitting
or leaving the dojo. Many times I have certain drills and training
planned and have to cancel them at the last minute because half of
the class doesn't show up. With that goodbye to Athena, Ben, and
Logan. Elias, Shawnee, and Marty please let me know what is going
on. James and Paige please let me know if you are coming back or
not. Thank you.

I'm sure that it has something to do with Zuffa buying the rights to
the UFC a few years ago. I'm sure it came down to either add some
rules or be banned outright. Remember the "human cock fighting" terms
used by everyone a few years ago? Even Sioux Falls South Dakota got
on the band wagon and banned MMA events in the city. They can market
it to more people this way. Liability and insurance is another
problem. Japan does not have the law suit problems that the USA has.
We live in a country where some idiot spills hot coffee on her lap,
sues, and wins millions of bucks. Now that the UFC is regulated and
using a sport commission to keep things on the up and up it's more
popular. Before they couldn't give tickets away for the events now
they are sold out. I agree that some of the technical fighters are now
SOL because of the time limits.

ANAHEIM, CA, September 23 – A champion's heart can never be
underestimated. Just ask Matt Hughes, who survived blood, a poke in
the eye, and crippling submission attempts from the last man to beat
him, BJ Penn, to stop `The Prodigy' in the third round at the
Arrowhead Pond tonight and extend his reign as the UFC welterweight
champion.

Penn, who replaced injured number one contender Georges St. Pierre
in the UFC 63 main event, had submitted Hughes in their first bout
in January of 2004, and after two rounds, it looked like he was on
his way to a repeat, but Hughes wouldn't go away that easily.

"I knew I had lost the first two rounds," said Hughes, now 42-
4. "That just meant I had three left."

The atmosphere was loud and electric from the start, and as soon as
referee John McCarthy waved the fighters into action, Hughes
immediately tried a high kick that missed but which surprised the
crowd. After that brief exchange, Hughes looked for the inevitable
takedown, but Penn fought it off, instead being pushed into the
fence where the two grappled to a stalemate. Once the two
separated, Penn landed a big right hand, drawing blood from Hughes's
mouth and nose, but that didn't stop the champion, who kept looking
to trade on the feet. Seconds later though, Hughes got
inadvertently poked in the right eye by a Penn left hand and the
bout was halted for the doctor to inspect the damage.

After the fight resumed, Hughes was left with a welt under his eye
and a sense of urgency as he engaged Penn again and tried for the
takedown but only managed to drive `The Prodigy' into the fence.

Penn appeared to stuff Hughes' first takedown attempt of the round,
but a quick follow-up put the Hawaiian on his back moments later.
With the crowd chanting for Hughes, the champion tried to work his
ground and pound attack, but the ultra flexible Penn kept out of
serious danger as he looked for a submission. Hughes stayed in
control on the ground though and eventually broke through with a
couple of forearms. Hughes' attack allowed Penn the space he needed
to escape though and he quickly grabbed Hughes' back, bringing back
memories of their first fight as Penn tried to lock up and submit
his opponent. Yet Hughes survived the onslaught, barely, as the
bell rang.

Hughes landed with a few good punches and a leg kick early in the
third stanza, pushing the attack hard on the feet as Penn looked
exhausted and listless from his late round attack in the previous
frame. Again, the crowd chanted for Hughes at the bout went to the
mat and the Illinois native imposed his will on Penn from the top
position, and suddenly the challenger was taking flush shots to the
face at an alarming rate and Penn was rendered defenseless, leaving
McCarthy no choice but to stop the fight at 3:53 of the third round.

With the defeat, Penn falls to 11-4-1.

Check out UFC.com for all the fight results.

Belt Promotions: Testing was held in August 29th. Congratulations
to the following on their promotions: John Boggs, blue belt; Shae
Miller, orange belt. The next tentative testing will be held
Tuesday, September 26th at 6:30 PM. If no one is ready to test we
will have class as usual that day. Friends and family are welcome
to attend testings. All students regardless if you are testing or
not are expected to be present at testings.
New Students: Please welcome Kodi Hanson to the dojo and welcome
back Shae Miller. Kodi is a blue belt in kenpo and trained
previously in Colorado. Good luck with your training.
Business: Just a reminder that monthly membership fees are due by
September 7th. Please have dues paid on time as this helps us meet
our financial obligations on time. Quarterly membership dues are
due again next month. Remember it's $200 per quarter and you must
pay the entire amount to receive the discount. Otherwise it's $75 a
month.
Also if you have ordered gear and equipment please check the
bulletin board for your total and get the items paid for. Some of
you still owe on gear from this spring. Student manuals are still
available. The price is $20.
Upcoming Events: The Tiger Academy will be hosting a Brazilian Jiu-
Jitsu tournament in Sioux Falls September 23rd, 2006. Entry fee is
only $25. The event begins at 9 AM. It's my understanding that
there will be a taekwondo tournament held at the same time at the
same location. See flyer on the bulletin board at the dojo for more
details.
The 11th Annual Fargo Open Martial Arts Championships featuring
semi-contact karate, taekwondo, and submission grappling will be
held October 28th, 2006. Pre-registration fee is $40 by October
20th and $50 after that date. This tournament will also have a
forms, weapons, and breaking competitions.
Dojo: Now that the student manual project is finally behind me, I'm
working towards getting our school patch finally made up. We are
also looking at offering a calendar with photos of training at the
dojo for 2007.
Health & Fitness: Most everyone took the Karate Physical Fitness
Test (KPFT) last month and did a good job. You should use the KPFT
to set goals to improve your fitness levels. Be sure to bring a
water bottle to class. It's still hot outside and you need to be
drinking water.
MMA: Our run time in improving. We're down to running the 2 miles
in 19 minutes and 51 seconds. That's impressive as we've cut nearly
20 minutes off our run time since July. We also went to the YMCA
and did a 500 meter lap swim. We did good, everyone finished in
under 20 minutes. Our goal was to do it in 12 ½ minutes or less.
JD came the closest finishing the swim in a little over 15 minutes.
And in case you are wondering the 12 ½ minute goal is the swimming
standard for the US Navy SEALs.
We will continue to do some boxing drills so be sure to pick up a
set of hand wraps. They make the gloves fit better and provide
protection to your hands.
Housekeeping: Please be sure to take your uniforms home and was them
on a regular basis. Please excuse the mess caused by recent water
damage. We are working with the landlord to correct the problem.
Other: Season 4 of the Ultimate Fighter: The Comeback is on weekly
on Spike TV. Sometimes there is some blood as it's as real as it
gets. The UFC is real fighting, not badly choreographed junk with
predetermined outcomes. UFC 63 will be September 23rd, UFC 64 will
be October 14th, UFC 65 will be November 18th, and UFC 66 will be
December 30th with all fights live on PPV.
And on October 10th live on Spike TV for FREE, Ken Shamrock and
Tito Ortiz are going to fight for a third and final time. After the
short fight due to referee stoppage at UFC 61 many fans were upset
especially after paying $40 for it on PPV. Dana White, president of
the UFC, is giving back to the fans by having this fight free to
give the fans what they paid for. Shamrock vs Ortiz: The Final
Conflict.

contact with Mr. Holland via his email address on the site. There
are now a lot of pictures and even a few videos under the files

Tonight we had a good workout. JD, John ,and I did our MMA training.
We started out by running 2 miles. Our time has been cut in half over
the last 6 weeks. John finished in 16:05 min and JD and I finished in
19:51 min. We've cut over 20 minutes form our first run back in
July. We came back to the dojo, weighed in then did our 300 sit ups.
We finished out the night boxing. It was a great workout. Continued
practice and training is making a big difference. You can see the
improvement. The next MMA workout will be Wednesday September 6th.
We will be doing grass drills if the weather cooperates. Hope to see
you there.

Last night we had our MMA advanced class. We started at 6PM by
going to the YMCA and doing lap swimming. We swam 500 meters
nonstop with a goal of doing it in 12 min 30 sec or less. We didn't
quite make that time but we all did rather well (okay so we're not
ready to become Navy SEALs...yet). Before we left the Y we did 100
knee strikes in the water. When we got back to the dojo we did 300
situps because we only had three people show up, Bill, JD, and
Marty. Afterthat we worked on boxing using the FIT dvd. We went
through the dvd 3 times then finished the evening by working on
knees strike against an opponent.
Great job JD and Marty. To everyone else, where were you?
Needless to say I'm a little disapointed. This shows a serious lack
of dedication. Training is not something you do for 2 weeks then
quit. It's a way of life. If you want to reach your goals then you
have got to put forth the effort. You get out of this exactly what
you put into it. It's not fun giving up soda pop, candy, bread,
fast food and all the other things that go along with training this
way but the final result is worth it. I guess it comes down to if
you want your hand raised or not in your next fight. The time to
determine who wins is not in the ring but during the training the
months leading up to a fight. Nuff said.

Belt Promotions: No testing was held in July. The next testing will
be held Tuesday, August 29th at 6:30 PM.
New Students: Please welcome Marty MacConnell and Ryan Kotzea to
the dojo. Marty will be training in MMA. Ryan was an All American
wrestler in high school and was ranked in the top 10 in the nation.
He was a State Champion numerous times. He will be our wrestling
advisor during the advanced class MMA training.
Business: Just a reminder that monthly membership fees are due by
August 10th. Please have dues paid on time as this helps us meet
our financial obligations on time. We are also ordering more of the
rear window car decals. Same price as before, $15. Student manuals
are also finally available. The price is $20.
Schedule: NO CLASS August 8th. We will be having a combined class
(both Kenpo Kids and Basic Class) of all ages and ranks on Thursday
August 17th at 7 PM. Please be sure to refer to the calendar on
back for class times and events.
Upcoming Events: There will be a Brazilian jiu-jitsu tournament in
Sioux Falls September 23rd, 2006. Entry fee is only $25. The event
begins at 9 AM. See flyer on the bulletin board at the dojo for
more details.
The 11th Annual Fargo Open Martial Arts Championships featuring

held October 28th, 2006. Pre-registration fee is $40 by October
20th and $50 after that date. This tournament will also have a
forms, weapons, and breaking competitions.
We're looking at planning a class trip to Hawaii, the birthplace
of American Kenpo, in 2010 to celebrate the dojo's 5th anniversary.
That's only a few years away. The trip will be focused around kenpo
training but there will be time for site seeing and fun. We will
probably start fund-raising the fall of 2007. More details to
follow.
Kobudo: You are required to earn one kobudo weapons patch before
you can test for black belt. Weapons practice is held Thursday
nights at approx 8:45 PM. Don't put this off until you are a brown
belt.
Dojo: The new bathroom is up and running. It s much larger and
nicer than the bathroom at the old dojo. We also got a new mat for
ground fighting and MMA. Since it's blue it will also serve as the
ring for sparring. It's thicker than the old black mat so it should
protect a lot more during grappling and takedown training.
Health & Fitness: We will be taking the Karate Physical Fitness
Test (KPFT) this month. The KPFT is used to evaluate a student's
fitness level. It's not a pass or fail test, just a tool to help
students improve their fitness.
MMA: We still need to work on our run time. We need to get down to
where we are running the 2 miles in 16 minutes. We are going to
continue practical fighting exercises. August 9th we will be going
over to the YMCA for lap swimming. Bring $8 for a pool pass if you
do not have a Y membership. We will be swimming 500 yards and the
goal is to do it in 12 ½ minutes or less. The MMA class August 9th
will begin at 6 PM. You will need hand wraps this month. And just
a reminder that you will need MMA gloves by the end of the year at
the latest. The Ultimate Fighter 4 (TUF4) begins August 17th on
Spike TV and UFC 62 is August 26th live on PPV.
Housekeeping: The changing room is getting a bit messy. Please
keep it neat and orderly. There is also an organizer to put your
shoes by the green pagoda. Please do your part to keep the dojo
clean and running smoothly. Recently someone kicked a Wavemaster
into the wall knocking a big hole in the drywall. Now I have to
spend money and time to fix it. I realize accidents happen but this
was caused by a lack of common sense.
Other: We do have a small library set up at the dojo. Students can
check out books covering various martial arts topics. All that I
ask is that you return them after a week so others have an
opportunity to read them also. There is a sign out sheet next to
the books.
Be sure to check out our Yahoo Groups webpage:
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/aberdeenkenpo/ You can stay in
contact with Mr. Holland via his email address on the site. There
are now a lot of pictures and even a few videos under the files
folder.
The University of Bridgeport in Connecticut will be offering a
bachelors degree in martial arts studies starting fall 2006. It
will be the first college outside of Asia to offer such a degree.
The program explores languages, historical roots, philosophy, the
impact of martial arts on society, and training in at least one
martial art be it Chinese, Japanese, or Korean. It s a 128 credit
8 semester program taught by the very best in martial arts. Check
out www.bridgeport.edu for admission requirements and further
details.
