Just wanted to let everyone know that I'm revising the student manual
over the next month or so. All problems that we have come across will
be addressed. Further I plan to have it published in book form and I
will be adding photos to it also. I hope to keep the cost down to
around $19.99 per book but it will depend on the number of pages when
the photos are added. If anyone has anything they want added, included
or fixed/changed please let me know ASAP. Thanks,
Mr Lammon
Head Instructor
Hi everyone,
My name is Dave Strobel from Minneapolis, I work with Mr. Norm
Rolando's American Kenpo class and his Champion Youth American Kenpo
as well. I also have a small group my self.
I wanted to let you know that Frank Trejo will be in Minneapolis on
Saturday, December 13th.
Times are from 12:00 to 4:00 at the Central Community Center at
6300 Walker St St. Luois Park, MN. 55416
Cost of the seminar is $85 with advanced notice and $100 at the door.
Feel Free to contact me at mr.strobel@... or call
me at 612-597-9724.
Salute,
Dave
On 7/25/07 Mr. Wayne Krysowaty was promoted to Shodan (1st degree
black belt) at the Aberdeen Kenpo Karate Academy by Mr. Lammon. Mr.
Krysowaty has been studying various styles of karate for over 7
years. He has been training at the AKKA for close to 3 years.
Congratulations Wayne on your accomplishment. You earned it. Check
out the pics.
Because of the recent flooding Kenpo Karate class scheduled for
tonight at 7 PM is cancelled. Testing will be postponed until
further notice. Sorry for any inconvience. I plan on having class
as normal next Tuesday May 15th at 7 PM. See you then.
Mr. Bill Lammon
Head Instructor
Aberdeen Kenpo Karate Academy
Testing: The next testing will be May 15th, at 7 PM. The CLU
building is not available as they have regular scheduled union
meetings there during the evenings. For you blue belts we will run
through as much of the material as you know. As long as you know
more than half you'll receive a green stripe on your belt. I don't
think anyone is ready to test for their full green belt. Wayne
Krysowaty should be ready to test for his black belt.
New Students: None thus far. I'm actually going to be very
selective on who I accept as new students. With trying to get ready
for my 3rd degree black belt test and work on my MMA training I
simply do not have time to spend on someone only to have them quit in
6 months or less. I will always train those who want to learn.
Also good bye to John Boggs and Shae Miller.
Upcoming Events: May 5th there will be the annual International
Taekwondo Tournament in Clark, SD. There will be competitors from
Canada, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. This event is sponsored by Master
Sanchez of Clark TKD. It will be held at the Clark High School Gym.
Registration is from 8:30-10 AM. There is a black belt meeting at 10
AM with the tournament beginning at 10:30 AM. Color belts will again
spar two 90 second rounds. This should be a fun tournament. If you
missed the pre-registration you can still compete as the entry fee is
only $40 at the door.
Business: Just a reminder that monthly fees are due by May 8th. JD
you still owe for April. Dues are $50 a month per person or $75 a
month for family rate (2 people).
Dojo: I've had several people ask me about opening up another dojo.
I think people are too focused on the building when then should be
focused on the training. I'm still about $4700 in debt from the last
two dojos. First that debt needs to be paid off. Operating costs
run about $800-$1000 a month. It's not a money maker unless you
water down the material and hand out black belts like candy, which I
refuse to do. I honestly don't know how I'm going to pay
off the dojo debt I have now let alone go deeper in the hole. A
naked man in an empty room can practice karate. It doesn't take a
special building and fancy equipment to train. This stuff was
practiced in secret for many years, even as recent as the late 1940's
after WWII.
Other: UFC 70 was held April 21st. It had a surprising upset when
Gonzaga knocked out Mirko Cro Cop with a kick to the head in the
first round. UFC 71 will be held May 26th live on PPV. Chuck
Liddell will be fighting Rampage
Jackson for the Light Heavyweight (205 lbs) Title.
And season 5 of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) is on weekly on Spike
TV. It features lightweights (155 lbs) fighting for a million dollar
contract with the UFC.
The UFC also recently bought Pride FC for $70 million. TUF series
is getting higher ratings than the NBA, NHL, or even NASCAR. The UFC
hopes to draw bigger crowds than the Super Bowl within the next few
years. That's very impressive considering that there is usually a
fight close to once a month.
Check out our Yahoo Groups webpage:
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/aberdeenkenpo/ It still has
lots of good info and updates that don't make it into the
newsletter. Also the dojo has something new now, a Myspace page.
You can check it out at www.myspace.com/akkadojo The newsletter will
be posted on both the Yahoo Groups webpage and on Myspace as a blog.
Both are good ways to network with other martial artists.
I got this as a bulletin via Myspace. It got my blood boiling. It's
idiots like this that got MMA events banned in Sioux Falls, SD. Feel
free to let CBS know what you think of Mike Freeman. I'd love to get
in a cage with this jerk for just 30 seconds. Here's the article by
the idiot of the year:
This is what the Oscar De La Hoya-Floyd Mayweather fight, one of the
most important events in recent sports history, really means: It's
boxing's last stand.
Boxing is fighting for its life, and in some ways the largest
obstacle to its rebirth is its greatest competitor -- the worst
league ever invented, the UFC. Which means it is good vs. evil, Halle
Berry vs. Courtney Love, true sport against the mosh pit of sweat and
bloodied skull fractures known as ultimate fighting.
De La Hoya and Mayweather can single-handedly save their sport from
deteriorating into dust while simultaneously stopping the advance of
the UFC barbarians at the gate, trying to destroy boxing by polluting
pay-per-view with their brand of low-brow, ghetto-fabulous
hooliganism.
This is it. This is when boxing emerges from its great depression
riding the shoulders of De La Hoya and finally strikes a blow to the
caged ignorance that is mixed martial arts. It will happen.
In the coming days, you will read foofs who will say boxing can never
survive, despite one of the more glorious bouts just several days
away. On Thursday, you will attempt to stomach the dopey ramblings of
my good friend Gregg Doyel, otherwise known as Captain Persnickety,
downplaying this grand moment in history. He's probably another
ultimate fighting apologist as well.
Mixed martial arts will never be as good as boxing on its worst day.
Many of the ultimates are nothing but thugs and ruffians. All that
league has done is take a few former nightclub bouncers, knuckle
crackers and parolees, put on some fancy TV graphics and told
them, "Kick the other guy in the nuts."
No skill is required to knee someone in the groin (and it happens
despite rules stating it is illegal). I'm kneeing Doyel in the groin
now. See, was that difficult?
Next on Spike TV: Man eats another man's face. Then some dork will
call it a sport.
The UFC has no credibility. UFC equals the Ultimate Farcical Clown
league.
And please do not wax poetic about the UFC's popularity. Of course
people watch the UFC. It's human cockfighting. It appeals to the
lowest common denominator of human existence.
The message boards and my e-mail will be irradiated with balderdash
about how the mainstream media is simply a bunch of snobs and we
don't "get" the Ultimate Farcical Clown league. I love the NFL. Only
Roman gladiators had a more dangerous sporting profession. The NFL is
more violent than the UFC, but football at least possesses a veneer
of being civilized.
Boxing is almost comically imperfect. It is full of crooks, con
artists and ear biters (and that's just a weekend in Atlantic City
with Mike Tyson). Despite its faults and notwithstanding the massive
greed that has caused boxing to collapse on itself like a dying sun,
boxing has more charm in its broken pinky than the Ultimate Farcical
Clown league does in its entire crappy organization.
No UFC goon has or ever will possess the grace and natural
showmanship of De La Hoya or the true fearsome fighting skills of
Mayweather.
Notice the word: skills. This match will not resemble a bar-room
brawl but meticulous, highly practiced, man-to-man warfare between
two skilled, all-time athletes.
It is only a matter of time before the UFC suckers, er, fans realize
they have been fooled by a Jedi mind trick.
The UFC should be banned; the De La Hoya-Mayweather bout should be
embraced.
The fact a non-heavyweight match is getting so much attention shows
that boxing still has appeal (and even I once thought it was dead).
The fact boxing has survived despite so many scandals and crooked
promoters demonstrate it has resilience.
"This (fight) is important because boxing is at its lowest point and
boxing has been at its lowest point for quite a while now," De La
Hoya told the New York Post. "Boxing is always taking these low blows
left and right from people. This will give it a good shot in the
arm."
The fight can do more than that. It can begin a resurgence perhaps
not seen before in American sports. If the fight is particularly
competitive, casual fans will give boxing another look and the all-
important advertisers will again open their wallets instead of
turning their backs.
Then maybe we can begin to put the sad joke that is the UFC behind
us.
And once again we can get excited about a real sport.
Saturday April 21st live on Spike TV for FREE was UFC 70: Nations
Collide. Some very good fights.
Michael Bisping won against Elvis Sinosic. Andrei Arlovski also won
against Fabrico Werdum although he didn't do as good as I thought he
would.
But the main event truely was the fight of the evening. Mirko Cro Cop
took on Gabriel Gonzaga. Mirko was the pick as he is known for his
explosive powerful kicks. Gonzaga was able to trap a kick thrown by
Cro Cop and put the fight on the ground. Towards the end of the first
round Gonzaga threw a wicked kick to Cro Cop's head, kocking him out.
Yes you read that right...Gonzaga knocked out Cro Cop with a kick to
the head, something that is Cro Cop is known for doing. It was one of
the most surprising upsets of the night. Gonzaga nows gets a shot for
the UFC Heavyweight Title by fighting Randy Couture. This fight
kicked ass!!!
And just a reminder that UFC 71 is May 26th live on PPV. Chuck
Liddell will be fighting Rampage Jackson for the Light Heavyweight
Title.
And be sure to watch The Ultimate Fighter 5 Lightweights (TUF5)
weekly on Spike TV.
Also the June 2007 issue of Black Belt Magazine just hit newsstands.
The cover features BJ Penn, coach of TUF5. The issue is marketed as a
MMA special issue. There are several good articles about BJ Penn and
John Machado. The rest of the issue is okay but is not as much about
MMA as they'd like you to believe. Still worth the $5 though.
And you'll be happy to know that The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) has been
bringing in higher TV ratings than the NBA, NHL or even NASCAR.
UFC ACQUIRES PRIDE FIGHTING
The majority owners of Ultimate Fighting Championship have agreed to
buy their biggest mixed martial arts rival, Pride Fighting
Championships, in a deal that will establish megafights among the
outfits' titleholders and possibly attract huge pay-per-view
audiences.
"This is really going to change the face of MMA. Literally creating
a sport that could be as big around the world as soccer. I liken it
somewhat to when the NFC and AFC came together to create the NFL."
-- Lorenzo Fertitta, one of UFC's majority owners
Company executives declined to comment on the sales price, but a
person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press that
brothers Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta will purchase the Japan-based
Pride for less than $70 million. The person was not authorized to
speak to reporters and spoke on condition of anonymity.
The deal was completed Tuesday and was announced during a news
conference in Tokyo, where Lorenzo Fertitta has been negotiating
with Nobuyuki Sakakibara, the majority owner and chief executive of
Dream Stage Entertainment Inc., Pride's owner.
"We have been talking to Pride for probably about 11 months,"
Lorenzo Fertitta said. "It's been a long, drawn-out process but we
finally were able to put the two brands together."
To buy the company, the brothers created a new entity called Pride
FC Worldwide Holdings LLC. The newly formed company will take over
Pride assets, including its trademarks, video library and valuable
roster of fighters, from Dream Stage. The Fertitta brothers, who own
Las Vegas-based Zuffa LLC, the parent company of UFC, intend to keep
the well-known Pride name and promote fights under that brand.
The acquisition marks a new phase in the brothers' quest to dominate
the burgeoning world of mixed martial arts since they bought the
struggling UFC in 2001.
"This is really going to change the face of MMA," Lorenzo Fertitta
said. "Literally creating a sport that could be as big around the
world as soccer. I liken it somewhat to when the NFC and AFC came
together to create the NFL."
The deal allows the Fertitta brothers to broker the biggest MMA
fights possible in the near future, increasing their influence in
this sports entertainment business.
"We will be able to literally put on the fights that everyone wants
to see," Lorenzo Fertitta said. "It will allow us to put on some of
the biggest fights ever."
In the past, there has been at least one case in which Pride and UFC
couldn't hammer out a deal to put their top fighters in the ring
together. With Pride in their pocket, the Fertitta brothers intend
to ensure that never happens again.
The sale gives Pride more financial backing to expand the business
internationally after suffering a recent financial blow.
Major sponsor Fuji Television Network Inc. dropped Pride in June
after a tabloid linked Pride to the Japanese mob -- something
Sakakibara has denied vigorously. To help bolster Pride, the company
staged two PPV fights in Las Vegas. Neither was a financial success.
The fights gained exposure for Pride but lost money, making the sale
of Pride more likely.
"I think it certainly weakened their position," Lorenzo Fertitta
said. "One of our goals is to get back on a major platform back here
in Japan."
Lorenzo Fertitta said he'll be looking to expand Pride
internationally.
Buying Pride is the latest in a series of acquisitions that the
brothers have made in the last six months. Zuffa snapped up World
Extreme Cagefighting and World Fighting Alliance last year.
Similar to Pride, buying WFA gave UFC the rights to a popular
fighter named Quinton "Rampage" Jackson. Jackson will face UFC's
most popular fighter, Chuck Liddell, the current light heavyweight
champ in Las Vegas, on May 26 on PPV.
In the combat world, the Pride deal leaves a fragmented group of
upstarts and K-1, another Japanese company that promotes fighters
skilled in various forms of kick boxing.
Thanks to a surge in popularity, the brothers' investment in UFC and
MMA in general has begun to pay off.
Last year, UFC cracked $200 million in PPV revenue, putting it on
par with World Wrestling Entertainment Inc.
UFC stages fights in arenas across the country and airs a clutch of
successful television shows on Spike TV. It has also opened an
office in London, looking toward establishing itself internationally.
The brothers also run Station Casinos Inc. in Las Vegas. Lorenzo
Fertitta is president and Frank Fertitta is chairman and chief
executive of Station Casinos, a public company that was recently
agreed to be purchased by a private equity investor group that
includes key members of the Fertitta family.
Thursday April 12 there will be a boxing Fight Night again at the
Eagles Club here in Aberdeen. $250 is the winning prize for each
weight division. Tickets are $8 in advance or $12 at the door. You
can check out www.knockoutevents.net for further details. It would be
nice to get a few of us from the dojo to compete. Just remember that
it's only boxing, no kicks allowed. You can register on line for this
event. Hope to see you there.
Belt Promotions: No testing has been held since February 6th. Wayne
Krysowaty is preparing for his black belt test. Right now
tentatively I'm looking at Tuesday May 8th, 2007 for the next
testing date. With the TKD tournament coming up May 5th I thought
it would be wise to hold off on testing until after the tournament.
Business: Please have monthly dues paid by April 10th. A few of you
still owe dues for March. Please pay ASAP so I can settle the dojo's
final bills. Just a reminder that the monthly fee is $50 per person
or a family rate of $75 month for two people.
Schedule: I will be gone April 3rd & 4th for a Street Survival
seminar. It's designed for law enforcement and will cover various
aspects of defensive tactics and officer safety issues. Thus there
will be NO CLASS Tuesday April 3rd. Instead we will have class
Thursday April 5th at 7 PM.
Upcoming Events: May 5th there will be the annual International
Taekwondo Tournament in Clark, SD. Competitors come from as far away
as Canada, Mexico, and Puerto Rico to compete. This is a big
tournament and it's sponsored by Master Sanchez of Clark TKD. I plan
on going and hope many of you will compete. We are going to start
getting ready for this tournament so bring your sparring gear to
class.
Dojo: Training has been going okay this last month. Everyone is
making good progress. I had hoped to have more students continue
their training. Class will continue to be held once a week on
Tuesday nights at 7 PM. Again it will be a combined class, all ages
and ranks. The blue mat fits nicely in my living room surprisingly
and that was the main area that we trained on in the old dojo. I
still have a debt of several $1000 to get paid off before I will
even consider looking for a new dojo.
Other: I recommend being a member of our Yahoo Groups webpage:
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/aberdeenkenpo/ This is the best
way to stay on top of what is going on with the AKKA. There are lots
of photos and good info.
Season 5 of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF 5) begins Thursday April 5th
only on Spike TV. This season will feature lightweights. It's as
real as it gets.
I'm sorry to hear about your divorce and everything else that seems
to be going on. I guess it explains why the phone number was
disconnected when I tried calling. I was in Karate in Springfield,
MO for 2 years and have been trying to find a place to continue my
training. That was quite a while ago that I was in Karate since
after that I lived in Tulare and Redfield, so they didn't have any
thing dealing with karate. I know they had a trainer come to the
school every week or something, but I've been looking for something
alittle more serious and also I didn't want to have to start all
over again and go at the same pace as everyone else. Anyways, do you
know any places around Aberdeen that train? I suppose I could wait
until the summer after this one when I move to Minneapolis
(hopefully) but this is something I've been wanting to continue ever
since I left Springfield.
Thanks,
Gloria
