Hi all,
TODAY Tuesday, December 18 at 4:00 PM, The Ann Arbor Skatepark Action
Committee will be presenting to the Ann Arbor Parks Advisory
Commission (PAC). It is critical that we have people there to show
support.
One of the things PAC wants to know is how many people support the
building of a permanent skatepark in Ann Arbor. We need folks to come
and be seen at TODAY's meeting. PLEASE come and show your support.
The presentation will last about a half-hour, including discussion
with the PAC members.

Thanks for your continuing support!

Put a link to a2skatepark.org on your blog, website, myspace, facebook, yahoo group, and any other online entity you might update. Put a2skatepark in your top friends!
Email five friends and make sure they know about the Ann Arbor Skatepark Action Committee and website a2skatepark.org. In the email, request that THEY email five friends too.
Put your a2skatepark.org sticker on your car. If you don’t have a car, ask to put it on someone else’s car, or slap it on your skateboard.
Write a letter to the mayor of Ann Arbor, or the city council member in your ward. Tell them why you think it’s important that Ann Arbor has a public, free, concrete skatepark. Send us the letter you write, as we might use it as a sample letter for others who need help getting started.
Forward this list to a couple people.
TOMORROW:
Go to Launch or Redbelly and get a sticker. Put it on your board, your car, or get permission to put in on someone else’s car.
Go to launch or Redbelly and buy an a2skatepark.org tee shirt for ten bucks. Put it on and never take it off (all the money made from these shirts goes to make more shirts. Spread the word!).
If you’re in school, start a skate club of some sort to help get people organized for this effort. A skate club can raise awareness, design shirts/stickers, come up with fundraising ideas, and show the community that people really want this to happen. Having this club as a school-sanctioned club will help you get announcements on the PA, etc...
If you have kids who are in school, help them get a skate club started.
Tell five people at the next skate session, your next shift at work, or in your next class about the Ann Arbor Skatepark Action Committee and a2skatepark.org.
THIS WEEK:
Tell as many people as you can about the next meeting of the Ann Arbor Skatepark Action Committee. Go to www.a2skatepark.org to find out when and where the next meeting is.
Send us an email describing your typical day of skating. This need not be long.
Send us an email describing what you are looking for in a skatepark.
Go to Launch and/or Redbelly and buy a shirt for your husband, wife, partner, sweety-pie, brother, sister, grandma, great-grandpa, or a friend. Make sure they promise to never take it off.
THIS MONTH:
Take pictures at whatever skateparks you go to. Email them to us and we’ll put them up on the site as good and bad skatepark examples. Tell us how long it took you to get to the park, and what you had to do to get there. Also, tell us why you picked that park.
Go to Launch and/or Redbelly and pick up some flyers for the next meeting of the Ann Arbor Skatepark Action Committee. Put them up around town to spread the word.
Come to the Parks Advisory Commission meetings and/or City Council meetings when we present. We’ll let you know when we are scheduled to appear. The PAC meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month. If you can’t come, watch them live on CTN!
Check a2skatepark.org on a regular basis. We’ll post all updates there.
Hi all,
This Tuesday, December 18 at 4:00 PM, The Ann Arbor Skatepark Action

Commission (PAC). It is critical that we have people there to show
support.
One of the things PAC wants to know is how many people support the

The presentation will last about a half-hour, including discussion
with the PAC members.
We are also looking for people who would like to speak at the meeting.
If you are a skater, parent of a skater, or simply support the
project, we can use you. Let us know ASAP if you'd like to speak for a
minute or two in support of the skatepark. Our steering committee is
meeting tomorrow to put the finishing touches on our presentation.

-The Ann Arbor Skatepark Action Committee
Don't forget that our next meeting is this week, Tuesday, December 11,
2007 at Forsythe Middle School, in the cafeteria at 5:00.
Come get first-hand details on the Ann Arbor Skatepark Committee's
effort, tell us what you think, get your questions answered, and meet
the folks who are working hard to make the Ann Arbor skatepark a reality.
If you've been meaning to get involved with the project, this is a
great opportunity to let us know face-to-face how you'd like to help
(or to find out how you can help).
See you there!
The Ann Arbor Skatepark Action Committee is looking for someone to
record the minutes of our meetings, private and public.
This is a great way for you, or a few people to get involved in the
process of building a skatepark in Ann Arbor.
We're looking for someone who can type relatively fast, and can jot
down key points as we go through our meetings. This will be extremely
helpful to us. The job pays in pats on the back, and the feeling that
you're helping the community be a better place. Oh, and when someone
asks, what have YOU done to help, you can tell them, "A boatload. What
have YOU done?"
Folks of any age are welcome to come record minutes of the meetings.
There are two meetings a month, one Steering Committee, and one public
meeting.
Thanks!
-Trevor

Dream it. Build it. Skate it.
This Sunday, October 28th, from 6-7:00 PM is the next meeting of the
Ann Arbor Skatepark Action Committee. The meeting will be at Redbelly
Boardshop, 1671 Plymouth Rd., Ann Arbor, MI.
All members of the public are welcome to attend these meetings.
Please come and show your support for the building of a free, concrete
skatepark in Ann Arbor. It's important that we show our numbers at
these meetings. We are in the beginning phase of securing project
approval and financial support from the City of Ann Arbor and they
need to know how many people are in support of the skatepark
initiative. Coming to these meetings is an easy way to stand up and be
counted (for more ideas on how you can help, go to
http://a2skatepark.org/?p=23 ).
Bring your questions, comments, suggestions and concerns. For more
information about A2 Skatepark initative, please visit
http://www.a2skatepark.org .
Here are some of the things we'll be discussing at this Sunday's meeting:
•Description of our new steering committee, and introduction of its
members.
•Update on meetings with the Parks Advisory Commission (PAC) and
upcoming schedule of PAC meetings
•Importance of the petition
•Questions, comments, suggestions, etc…
See you there!

The new stickers are in. Mega-huge thanks to Redbelly, VGKids and Mike
Bush for their generous contributions to the sticker fund. Also,
thanks to those who gave up change and threw it in the bottle at
Launch. All these donations made it possible for us to make the new
stickers. The stickers are available at Redbelly as of this posting,
and will be delivered to Launch this evening. You can also pick them
up at the Farmer’s Market (look for the Tree Town Batiks booth…
Thanks, Jerusha!) on most Saturdays and Sundays. Can’t make it to any
of those locations? Send us an email and we’ll get one to you!
Due to scheduling conflicts, we will not be presenting at the Ann
Arbor Parks Advisory Commission (PAC) meeting this month. We are,
however, meeting with PAC staff. We thank the PAC and its staff for
continuing to work with us.
It’s been less than three weeks, and we already have more than 400
entries to the online petition. This is awesome! Keep up the great
work directing people to a2skatepark.org and the online petition.
If you know of people who would rather sign a printed version of the
petition, you can download it at
http://wdean.fatcow.com/a2skatepark/skatepark_petition.pdf . Big
thanks to Chaos Wes for creating the printed version and uploading it
for all to use.
The next meeting of the Ann Arbor Skatepark Action Committee will be
on October 28, 6:00 PM at Redbelly. All members of the public are
welcome to join us in discussing this community project. Please plan
to attend if you can. There will be no November meeting, but there
will be one on December 2nd. Location TBA.

October’s meeting of the Ann Arbor Skatepark Action Committee will be
on Sunday, October 28, 6:00 PM at Redbelly Board Shop in Ann Arbor,
1671 Plymouth Rd.
A big thanks goes out to the owners/managers of Launch and Redbelly
for supporting local skating by offering up their businesses for our
meetings. We are currently looking for a larger, central location to
hold our meetings. If you have information about a possible meeting
place please email us.
The next Parks Advisory Commission (PAC) Meeting is on Tuesday,
October 16 at 4:00. These meetings are held in City Hall, council
chambers. We are meeting with PAC staffers before hand to discuss the
Ann Arbor skatepark. At the PAC meeting, we plan to bring the members
of the commission answers to questions they had for us when we last
presented. We thank them for their interest in this project, and we’re
looking forward to keeping an open line of communication with the
members of the Ann Arbor PAC. Please support our effort by attending
PAC meetings when we present.
The online petition to show how many people in Ann Arbor support this
skatepark effort is really taking off. Please keep telling people
about it, and keep those “signatures” coming. It’s important for us to
be able to tell our elected officials how many of our citizens believe
this is an important project.
We now have a paper version of the petition that can be circulated.
You can find a link to PDF and WORD versions of it here. Print it up,
collect some signatures, and return the sheet to Launch or Redbelly.
They’ll make sure it gets back to us, and our volunteers will input
the data to the electronic version of the petition. If you don’t have
access to a printer, you can pick up a copy of the paper version of
the petition at Launch or Redbelly starting tomorrow (Saturday).
There are Ann Arbor Skatepark shirts available at Launch, and starting
tomorrow, at Redbelly as well. We nearly sold out at the last meeting,
but our friend Wes is printing more and we’ll have them available
tomorrow. These shirts cost $10, and all the money goes to print more
shirts (only materials. We donate our time and service to make the
shirts).
We are almost out of our first run of stickers. This is great news!
There are now nearly 1000 “I support the Ann Arbor Skatepark” stickers
around SE Michigan. Launch, Redbelly, VGKIDS, Local Chaos and Yerboy
have all donated money (as well as many individuals who donated) to
make stickers. We’ll be getting more printed at VGKids this coming
week. They will be available at Launch, Redbelly, directly from us,
and at other businesses around town soon.
We are planning to start a large fundraising push soon. There are many
details that need to be worked out before we can launch the
fundraising, but keep your eyes to this site. We’ll let you know when
it starts, and how you can help.
Speaking of help, don’t forget the list of things you can do to help
the A2skatepark effort!

Hi all,
One thing that is important to the Parks Commission, City Council and
us is finding out how many people are in support of the skatepark
initiative. We have put up an online petition to collect names of
supporters. Please take a moment to sign the petition, and take
another moment to get TWO other people to sign!

Dug and I presented to the Parks Advisory Commission last Tuesday. The
presentation went well. The members of the commission seemed to be
very interested in the project, and had lots of questions for us.
We'll try to get a video of the presentation up on the a2skatepark.org
site soon. If you'd like to watch the re-broadcast, you can catch it
on Ann Arbor CTN (channel 16 on Comcast) on the following dates/times:
Monday, 8/27/07, 4:00 PM
Friday, 8/31/07, 10:00 AM

Hi folks,
Dug and I will be presenting at this week's Parks Advisory Commission.
We met previously with staff from the commission. This week's meeting
will be our "official" introduction to the city.
And speaking of the city... If you can, check out Ward Talk on Ann
Arbor CTN channel 19. Ann Arbor City Council member Steve Kunselman
(ward 3) was interviewed, and discussed his support for building a
skatepark in Ann Arbor. As soon as I can, I'll digitize a copy of the
video so it can be posted on a2skatepark.org. You can catch the
replays of that show on Comcast Ch. 19 on the following days:
Tuesday, 8/21/07 at 5:30 pm
Wednesday 8/22/07 at 7:00 pm
Thursday 8/23/07 at 5:30 pm
Saturday 8/25/07 at 10:00 am
Steve Kunselman has been a GREAT help in spreading the word about the
skatepark project. Much of the support we have from the city is due to
Steve's talking up the project whenever he can. Thanks Steve!
Also, a big thanks should go to Corey S. and D. Jenkins. They offered
up some cool art for us to use on the new A2skatepark shirts. Wes and
I have printed up some of Corey's, as well as some yerboy designs, in
our underground studio. The next shirt will be Mr. Jenkins' design.
They'll be available at Launch soon. Any money raised from these
shirts will go directly to raising awareness of and support for the
skatepark project.
Please accept our apologies for the spam that has been coming to this
group. We're working on keeping it out. If it keeps up or gets worse,
we'll be looking at another way to do our mailing list.
Our next skatepark meeting will be on Sunday, September 23, 5:00 pm at
Launch Board Shop. The shop is located at 1202 S. University in Ann
Arbor. We'll be updating the group on the latest actions we've taken,
and what our next steps are. As always, bring your comments, questions
and support!
-Trevor
Don't forget the next meeting of the Ann Arbor Skatepark Action
Committee is tomorrow, August 4, 7:00 pm at Launch Board Shop, 1202 S.
University in Ann Arbor. Bring your ideas, questions, comments and
concerns.
These meetings are for everyone in the community who is interested in
having a free, concrete skatepark built in Ann Arbor.
The agenda can be found at the following links:
http://www.yerboy.com/a2skatepark/8-4-07_agenda.htmlhttp://www.yerboy.com/a2skatepark/8-4-07_agenda.doc
In other news…
CTN will be playing the "Michigan Skatepark Sampler" DVD. This will
help the Ann Arbor community get an idea of what other towns in
Michigan have as far as skatepark facilities. The video is not
comprehensive, it's simply an example of what some other communities
have done. You can see it online at
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fIzD4BagIs
The DVD will air on COMMUNITY TELEVISION NETWORK, CABLE CHANNEL 17
(Ann Arbor) - Sunday, 8/12/07 at 2:45pm.
Additional replay times include: Sun., 8/12 at 10:00pm; Mon., 8/13 at
5:30pm; Tue., 8/14 at 3:00pm; Wed., 8/15 at 8:55pm; Thu., 8/16 at
1:00pm & 6:40pm; Fri., 8/17 at 8:00pm; Sat., 8/18 at 10:55am & 4:00pm;
Mon., 8/20 at 6:20pm; Tue., 8/21 at 4:00pm; and Wed., 8/22 at 8:00pm;
all on cable channel 17.
In our travels, we like to visit other free, public skateparks. We've
been to over 40 across the country in the past few years. Here's one
that I visited this week. It's not necessarily what we want in Ann
Arbor, but it is a PUBLIC, FREE, CONCRETE, (and did I mention) FUN
skatepark. Check it out (you may need to copy and paste the link)…
http://www.yerboy.com/a2skatepark/groton_ct.jpg
We need your help this week. The city is looking at this as a positive
project. With your help, Ann Arbor can have the skatepark of your
dreams. Read on.
Ann Arbor Skatepark Action Committee
How can you help?
Do research:
Last week, Dug and I met with a few folks from the Ann Arbor Parks
Advisory Commission. They want to work to get a skatepark built in Ann
Arbor. But, they need more info about what it means to have a
skatepark, and what it costs.
We need your help to get this information. We need you to call other
cities and ask them a few questions about their free, concrete public
skateparks. It only takes about 10 minutes. Here are the links to the
sheet with info on who to call and what to ask (copy and paste if
they’re not active links):
Web page:
http://yerboy.com/a2skatepark/skatepark_research.html
Word format:
http://yerboy.com/a2skatepark/skatepark_research_sheet.doc
PDF format:
http://yerboy.com/a2skatepark/skatepark_research_sheet.pdf
Send us the info once you have it, and we’ll use it at future meetings.
Spread the word:
We need people to go around town and put up flyers for the skatepark
meeting coming up on Saturday, August 4th. You can use the links below
to print out your own, or call Launch to see if they have some you can
post. If you need some printed, email us and we’ll get some printed
pronto.
http://yerboy.com/a2skatepark/842007flyer.jpghttp://yerboy.com/a2skatepark/842007flyersmaller.jpg
Also, tell everyone you know that you are working to get a world-class
skatepark built here in Ann Arbor. If they have questions about it
that you cannot answer, direct them to a2skatepark.org, or the
a2skatepark myspace page.
Get a sticker and stick it!
The stickers are available directly from Launch, or you can email us
and we’ll get you one. They cost a buck, and each dollar goes toward
helping the cause.
Come to the meetings:
Your input is going to make this skatepark great. Your knowledge of
the process is going to help you convince non-skaters that this is a
good idea. When you come to the meetings, you can talk to us face to
face, and tell us what you think. We are open to all ideas, and want
everyone involved to make this something that the whole community can
be proud of. We realize that everyone can’t make it to every meeting,
but try to make as many as you can.

You may want to add the City property at North Main and Summit (the maintenance yard soon to be abandoned). While it may be in the floodplain, or may have a water table to contend with, it should still be considered and discussed. Thanks guys.

As it turns out, they were already on board with the idea of exploring the option of a permanent skatepark, and had given it some thought. Choice quote: "We're already your allies" :-)
The bad news - no money already set aside in the parks budget for a skatepark.
The good news - they worked through a list of possible locations with us, as well as some next steps to consider in preparation for a presentation at the next Parks Advisory Commission meeting in August.
Some criteria for the location:
- by a bus stop - high visibility - parking - above the water table - away from residences and businesses
(A2 can't even get tiny gardens approved, it's just the way the city is. Not In My Backyard, it seems)
Some possibilities:
- Southeast area park (they'd already thought of this) - Veterans park (by the parking lot on Maple - shaded, very publicly visible, parking, nearby food) - Buhr
park
Here are our next steps, based on what they asked of us:
1. Figure out what the footprint of the park should be, based on similar parks we're thinking of
2. Figure out the fully-loaded cost (including amenities like fencing, lights, etc.), including an estimate for maintenance (which might include volunteer skatepark stewards to clean up trash, etc.). Examples of other local skateparks would be good.
3. Propose a location, in as much detail as possible (we can get park maps from the dept)
4. Figure out how to phase development of the park, as we raise money to build it in sections.
5. Propose alternative options for securing funding, maybe by talking to other successful skatepark committees in neighboring cities (foundation or grant money, fundraisers, corporate sponsors, individual donors, etc.).
6. Organize online. Besides our mailing list, we should set up an online petition, and gather
the contact information for as many supporters as we can to demonstrate interest.
7. Let the PAC folks know as soon as possible of our intent to make a 10-minute presentation, in order to get added to their agenda for their next meeting.
There's a lot of work to do ahead of this presentation - basically, we really need to do our homework and put together a solid, professional proposal for the PAC. We'll be coordinating most of this work online and in our meetings, so stay tuned for updates!

Thanks to everyone who came out to the A2 Skatepark meeting tonight. Extra special thanks to Will and Jarred from Launch for opening the store for us, as Eric is out of town.
We talked more about things you can do to help out the cause. Within the next couple weeks weŐre going to start the dialogue with the parks commission and city council. What can you do to help? Well, we need research done on other parks. Please check out the research form to help you when calling to get info. If you can call one city that has a skatepark and find out how they did it and how itŐs gone over, that would help us out a lot. We need this info when talking to city officials. WE CANNOT DO IT ALONE!
We watched a video sampler of some Michigan skateparks to show what weŐre talking about when we say that Ann Arbor needs a ŇskateparkÓ. Check out the quicktime movie , or email me for a DVD version. When you watch, keep in mind that there are things we want to do that these places have done, and things we don't. We can learn a lot by looking at (and skating) other parks.
We are selling ŇI Support the Ann Arbor SkateparkÓ stickers for a buck. Every dollar donated to this project helps a bunch. Those who were at the meeting tonight got one FREE! (Thanks again for coming!)
The next meeting of The Ann Arbor Skatepark Action Committee is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, August 4th, 7:00 pm at Launch board Shop. The date may change, depending on when we are able to schedule meetings with the parks advisory commission and city council.
This Wednesday is the second meeting of the Ann Arbor Skatepark
Committee. It will be held at Launch Board shop at 7:00 pm. Please

The other news is that we now have Support A2 Skatepark stickers. They

page address on them. All proceeds from these stickers go towards
getting a concrete skatepark built in Ann Arbor. Right now, our costs
are just for printing and communications, but we expect to have more
expenses as the project progresses.
The stickers cost only $1.00, and can be picked up at Launch, or from
me, Dug, Wes or Eric Wheeler. We plan to have these available at more
locations soon.
That's about it for now. Hope to see you on Wednesday at Launch.
We're
putting together a short video to show at council and parks meetings
here in Ann Arbor. I'm posting this to ask for your help.
What
we need is some short video clips from parks in the following towns.
I'll give more details when you contact me, but if you live in one of
these towns, or are going to be there within the next week or so, gimme
a shout and I'll let you know what we're looking for.
Michigan Cities we need footage from (in totally random order):
Bay City
Mason
Lansing
Charlotte
Jackson
Belleville
Howell
Huntington Woods
Niles
Midland
Traverse City
Westland
Portage
Grand haven
If you know of a Michigan city with a concrete park that I left off, please let me know.
And, please pass this on to anyone you know who might be able to help out!

Hello,
I would like to recommend George L, from Modern Skate and surf in Novi
to help with this. He currently owns 5 parks in Michigan, and has a
great deal of information I think on the construction of them.
Have a great day.
