Sosa, Blum, Everett file for free agency

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

NEW YORK — Baltimore's Sammy Sosa filed for free agency Monday along
with World Series star Geoff Blum and Chicago White Sox teammate
Carl Everett.

Sosa was a bust in his first and likely only season with the
Orioles, who acquired him from the Chicago Cubs in February with one
year left on his $72 million, four-year contract. The 36-year-old
outfielder, fifth on the career list with 588 homers, was limited by
injuries to 380 at-bats and hit .221 with 14 homers and 45 RBIs.

Blum's 14th-inning homer sent the White Sox to a 7-5 victory over
the Houston Astros in Game 3 of the World Series last week and
helped Chicago to a sweep. The reserve infielder was acquired from
San Diego on July 31.

Everett was 4-for-9 in the Series after hitting .251 during the
regular season with 23 homers and 87 RBIs. He filed after the White
Sox declined his $5 million option for next year, choosing to give
him a $500,000 buyout. Chicago also exercised its $1.2 million
option on right-handed reliever Cliff Politte, who could have been
bought out for $100,000.

In addition, the White Sox said Frank Thomas exercised his $10
million option, giving the team five days to decide whether to keep
the best slugger in team history or buy out the oft-injured
designated hitter for $3.5 million.

Thomas, a two-time AL MVP, has spent his entire career with the
White Sox and has said repeatedly he wants to come back. Chicago is
expected to give him the buyout, and then negotiate another deal at
a lower price.

He missed much of the last two years with foot and ankle problems.
The 37-year-old Thomas played only two months this year, but he hit
12 homers in 105 at-bats.

Across town, the Chicago Cubs and Glendon Rusch agreed to a $6
million, two-year contract, replacing a $2 million option he had for
next season. He was 9-8 with a 4.52 ERA this year, making 19 starts
and throwing his first shutout in nearly three years.

Closer Braden Looper's $5.5 million option was declined by the New
York Mets, who will pay the reliever a $250,000 buyout. New York
also exercised right-hander Steve Trachsel's $2.5 million option and
declined a $4 million option on first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz, who
gets a $450,000 buyout.

"Even though we declined Braden's option, we still plan on having
conversations with his agent," Mets general manager Omar Minaya said.

Looper went 4-7 with a 3.94 ERA and 28 saves in 36 chances and had
arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder on Oct. 3, the day after
the season ended. Trachsel missed most of the season following back
surgery in March and went 1-4 with a 4.14 ERA. Mientkiewicz,
acquired from Boston last winter after the Mets failed to sign free-
agent Carlos Delgado, hit .240 with 11 homers and 29 RBIs.

The Los Angeles Angels declined their $1,525,000 option on 36-year-
old left-hander Jason Christiansen and will pay a $125,000 buyout.
Christiansen was 0-0 with a 2.45 ERA in 12 games with the Angels,
who obtained him from San Francisco on Aug. 30. He went 6-1 with a
5.36 ERA in 56 games with the Giants.

Boston reliever Mike Myers also filed for free agency. The left-
hander was 3-1 last season with a 3.13 ERA in 65 appearances
spanning 37 1-3 innings.

A total of 137 players have filed for free agency, and approximately
60 more are eligible to file by the Nov. 10 deadline. Free agents
can talk money with all teams starting the following day.

Let the penny pinching begin!! I think if there is any player that
deserves the big bucks on the Sox this year, it's Neal Cotts. He has
been awesome and a great deal for making just the league minimum.
With all the extra revenue the Sox will have next season, there is no
reason to not keep this team together and keep the younger players
like Cotts happy by paying them a little more money even if they
don't have to. This is what players look at when they want to play
for a team. A lot of players I think would love to play for Ozzie
but they don't want to deal with backloaded contracts and being paid
their salary over 30 years without any interest.

When you think about it, the city only had a day to prepare for and
set this up. Maybe if the rally was on Monday like the city wanted,
then things might have been done better. They probably didn't expect
that many people to turn out given the Bulls celebration rally's
which brought about 300,000 fans. At least a million more people
attended this Sox rally which is something neither the city nor the
White Sox expected. In any case, hopefully they will do it better
next year!

I was at the rally Friday, real lose to the stage and the sound was great.  The speaker on the east end of the stage kept cuttin out when they showed the video on the jumbotron.  Not evry member of the team was asked to speak.  Buerhle, Pierzynski, Frank, Konerko, and Willie were the only ones I remember speaking for the players.  A lot of them looked like high school kids, they kept moving to the back of the stage.

I know of someone who was at the rally only 30 feet from the stage and couldn't hear anything so the sound was pretty awful if that is true.  I don't think they expected almost 2 million people to show up either.  I watched it over the weekend on my DVR and it was quite the event!  I wish I could have been there.  It looked like Mardi Gras for Sox fans only without the flashing!

You can more than likely get back copies of the Tribune and Sun Times by writing or emailing them directly (www.chicagotribune.com and www.chicagosuntimes.com).  In addition, IIRC, at least for the Tribune, you might want to check the major Universities.  I think ASU might sell the National version of the Tribune.

Hats and tshirts - Dick's Sporting Goods and Sports Authority have websites you can go to and you can always log onto www.whitesox.com to see what they have.

Hope this helps.

Hello!

A bunch of us Scott Podsednik fans drove from Wisconsin to downtown Chicago overnight on Friday.  We were wondering why Scott Podsednik didn't speak at the White Sox Rally on Friday??  Or did he speak and we missed him?

If Scott was trying to be humble and let his teammates speak instead of himself, that was wrong, it was more humble to speak instead of stay silent.

Scott Podsednik has a big fan base from Wisconsin, while we were at the White Sox rally downtown on Friday, there were chants of "We want Scott!" they probably didn't hear there was so much noise, but we never got to see him.  He stood at the back of the stage.

Then Scott Podsednik shows up on "Saturday Night Live" and he did speak on "Saturday Night Live."  I'm not mad at him but he made big contributions to the White Sox winning the World Series and deserved to speak at the rally.  We didn't think he was "overlooked" or there "wasn't enough time" for him to speak.

Thank you,

Simone C.

DON'T LISTEN TO i-POD
During Game 2, Scott Podsednik called his game-winning
homer in the dugout, but teammate Paul Konerko said,
"You've got to understand something. Pod's called it
100 times this year. He's bound to be right once in
awhile."

JUST BUSH-ED:
While facing 11 batters in the fifth inning of Game 3
of the World Series, Houston's Roy Oswalt threw a
career-high 46 pitches. "It took him so long to get
the last out,'' says Mike Downey of the Chicago
Tribune, "I think Barbara Bush caught a half-hour
nap."

BAGWELL'S JENKS-ED
Astros first baseman Jeff Bagwell, after striking out
on a Bobby Jenks fastball clocked at 100 mph: "If I
see that pitch 250 times, I'm still not going to hit
it.''

TOAST OF THE TOWN:
"I love this job,'' says White Sox manager Ozzie
Guillen, on the rumour he would retire if his team won
the World Series. "There's nothing better than eating
and drinking for free in Chicago.''

Seems to me PK has a good head on his shoulders too and has taken to Chicago like a duck takes to water....so while the naysayers think he might not be back I think he will be, maybe not getting as much money as he wants, but at least with a proven performer.

Let's see, ensured legacy, retired number, statues, positive media coverage for the rest of one's playing career for 12-15, or some negative sentiment from Chicago plus negative media coverage in a larger market whenever you fail to perform for an extra $3 million/year. Hmmm, tough decision. Expect to see 14 back in silver and black next year.

I did not realize this was their song until I heard it on Wed nite....and here I dug out the tape last week and started listening to it...

Not that I am complaining, but it seems weird that their song is from 20 years ago when the majority of the team were toddlers when this song was popular so am wondering which teammate likes Journey....

I should have figured that Steve Perry would be around...I heard him Wednesday nite after the game on WGN radio when they (Steve King and Johnnie Putman) were doing sort of a celebration deal after the game....was switching between 'GN and AM 1000...

Yes if you are a know-it-all Sox fan and like to boo and give up on the team when they are not doing well, then that is where you should go because you will be in good company LOL.  Maybe your experience with it is better but I personally am not fond of WSI.  When they first started out, they relentlessly spammed this group and raided the members list when it was Yahoo Clubs before the options of moderating the group or protecting the members list were available.  I have also tried to post there but there are at least a few rude moderators there who threatened to ban me because I have a link to this group in my siggy.  So that was the last time I ever visited that website!

Thank you very much.  I know my brother who is also a CUB fan was cheering the SOX on all the way and calling me for every moment, so we could share it together.  I screamed into his ear the moment Paulie hit the Grand Slam.  OOPS!  LOL
But, now that we won he has this theory of how the CUBS will win next year.  Red, White and Blue (for Cubs).  I choked on that one! LOL  Anyways, he said if they do go I have to cheer them on like he did for us.  I said well IF they make it and IF the SOX aren't in it, ok.  But I reminded him his beloved CUBS must make it past his wifes beloved BRAVES first! HAHA!

the Cubs' turn!  A cross town classic?!  Nah.....you'd only sweep

Ok I personally think Everett is done here in Chicago and Blum I am not too sure of either.  The others I believe will be back.  Frank will finish his career with the White Sox.  And how can we get rid of Politte?  Marte needs to go not Cliff.

The Sox have an option on Politte and we all know Frank's story.
