-After Chicago lost to Minnesota 6-5 on Tuesday night, manager Ozzie
Guillen indicated he was considering moving Swisher to first base,
but he wasn't confident anyone could take his place in center.

***Guess the trade makes this statement moot, but what do you think
Anderson feels like reading stuff like this?

-The only place for Griffey is in CF and move Swish to 1B and let PK
take a break so he can try and get his mind right. Swish plays much
better at 1B. This should also be a wake up call for PK who, after
being a regular all these years, now has some competition and maybe
that's what he needs to spark his offense. Sure, Jr. is 38 and not
as fast as he once was, which means Q and JD might have to cover a
little more, but he's playing on a contending team for the first
time in 11 years and that should give him some incentive.

Richar wasn't going to see any time in the bigs soon, if at all, as
long as we have Ramirez. What does concern me a little though is
that with Masset gone our BP is more fragile. I read that Linebrink
might have to extend his DL time and I wonder who the Sox are going
to bring up.

I like this trade and think Jr. will come through.

Griffey will play Center Field.  He is probably one of the best who has ever played that position.

Those are my feelings too, however, I think Paulie needs to sit out for a while.

Although Griffey doesn't steal bases he is still a good outfielder.  And yes we gave up very little for him so it's really a no lose situation with Junior.  He is definitely capable of hitting 30 homers per year which is more than we could expect from either BA or Swish.  I do see BA going in during the later innings as a defensive replacement when the Sox are winning, just like Swish will on the days Paulie starts at first.  I agree about giving Paulie an opportunity to find himself.  I remember in 2003 I think it was when Paulie had a batting average around .100 to start the season and that lasted through May.  He ended up having a better 2nd half and the next 2 seasons he hit 40 or more homers and drove in over 100 runs too.

This will provide us with alternatives dealing with Paulie. He is hurting the team. We can't be too sentimental and not get into the off season.

You are not crazy Kathy, you are right!  Swisher is a better 1B than Paulie even though Paulie usually does better offensively than Swisher.  Brian Anderson did pretty well so I think he should get a start in CF again and move Swisher to 1B.  After that bad throw, if Paulie can't help us defensively we can't really wait until his offense comes around too.  It was nice to see Fields get a hit so hopefully he can get hot now.

We soldier on. Things are looking good for the Sox as I have been
following them crushing the Twins on ESPN Scoreboard (as I do not have
cable!).

Maybe I should have thought my previous msg through: The Cubs, being
interviewed by Mr. Dan Roan, were playing on WGN (which was and usually
is obvious) while the Sox were again on Comcast and would probably have
been interviewed by someone else. So I'm sorry if I felt a little
overwhelmed while I typed. But I *did* feel a little overwhelmed while
I typed. :)

This is hilarious!  By the way, Carlos Quentin has more homers now than the almighty Josh Hamilton (not counting the Home Run Derby though).

Definitely and Griffey is a much better power hitter than Edmonds is.  Griffey has played in 45 different parks and has hit a home run in all but two of them.  Those two parks are Exhibition Stadium and Old Comiskey Park.  Junior is a clutch player too.  The Sox are going to have some kind of lineup now!

I guess it depends on how fast he can get to Minneapolis from Washington, D.C. where the Reds were scheduled to play tomorrow.  If he got the news before he left Houston then he could be there.  If not then I really doubt it.

Don't assume....I didn't see the press conference so wasn't sure if this was entirely official but all the reports I am seeing the deal was pending approval from MLB offices (because of cash considerations).....

With that said I would think he will be playing tonight but you never know....

From the Sox press release:

  MINNEAPOLIS -

The Chicago White Sox have acquired Hall of Fame-bound outfielder Ken Griffey
Jr. and cash considerations from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for pitcher
Nick Masset and infielder Danny Richar.

Griffey, 38, is a former American League Most Valuable Player (1997) and 13-time
All-Star. The left-handed slugger hit career home run No. 600 on June 9 of this
season, and his home run total of 608 ranks sixth all-time in Major League
Baseball history. Griffey has won seven Louisville Silver Slugger Awards and 10
Rawlings Gold Gloves during his 20-year career with Seattle (1989-99) and
Cincinnati (2000-08).

"Our intent is to win the American League Central division and ultimately, to
win another World Series championship," said Ken Williams, White Sox general
manager. "Adding a player the caliber of Ken Griffey Jr. gives us a better
chance to realize those goals. Griffey's addition gives Ozzie (Guillen) more
flexibility. Ozzie has the opportunity to field his best team - offensively and
defensively - on a day-to-day basis over the next two months, and this gives us
the chance to keep some of our middle of the order hitters fresh and producing
down the stretch. I spoke with Ken, and he is excited to be coming to Chicago
to try and help us reach the postseason."

Griffey, who has hit safely in his last 12 games with the Reds (.318, 14-44) and
owns a .927 on-base plus slugging percentage in July, is batting .245 (88-359)
with 15 home runs, 53 RBI and a .355 on-base percentage in 102 games with
Cincinnati in 2008. In 2007, Griffey hit .277 (146-528) with 30 home runs and
93 RBI in 144 games with the Reds.

Griffey, who is expected to join the White Sox Friday in Kansas City, is signed
through 2008 with a club option for 2009. He will wear uniform No. 17.

Over his career, Griffey has hit .288 (2,646-9,185) with 608 home runs and 1,754
RBI in 2,480 games. Currently 354 hits shy of 3,000 for his career, Griffey is
one extra-base hit behind Ty Cobb (1,140) for 10th on the all-time list and
ranks 16th in RBI. Griffey leads all active major leaguers in home runs,
multihomer games (55), hits, total bases (5,039), runs (1,596) and extra-base
hits (1,139).

Griffey has led the league in home runs four times and has topped 50 home runs
in a season twice, hitting 56 with Seattle in 1997 and 1998. He led the league
in RBI in 1997 with a career-high 147 and has topped 100 RBI eight times. A
member of baseball's All-Century Team, he has homered in 43 ballparks over his
career (including all existing) to tie for second most all-time.

Masset was 1-0 with one save and a 4.63 ERA (23 ER/44.2 IP) in 32 games with
the White Sox in 2008. The 26-year-old right-hander is 3-3 with one save and a
5.63 ERA (58 ER/92.2 IP) in 67 career games in the major leagues with Texas
(2006) and the White Sox (2007-08).

Richar, 25, is hitting .262 with nine home runs, 39 RBI and 11 stolen bases with
Class AAA Charlotte in 2008. The second baseman batted .230 with six home runs
and 15 RBI in 56 games with the White Sox in 2007.

Is it possible the Sox could get the same thing from Griffey like the
Cubs have with Jim Edmonds?

I don't think anyone is grumbling about it.  I think it's a good move.  Griffey is a decent CF and certainly better than Swisher.  But Griffey does spend a lot of time on the DL.  If he had the health of a Cal Ripken Jr. then he might have like 800 homers by now.

Griffey traded from Reds to White Sox for two players, cash

Updated: July 31, 2008, 3:42 PM ET

Griffey Agrees To Trade To White Sox

Ken Griffey Jr. approved a trade from the Cincinnati Reds to the Chicago White Sox on Thursday, paving the way for the future Hall of Famer to pursue a spot in the World Series for the first time in his career.

The deal was announced officially by the Reds in a news release at 3:30 p.m., a half-hour before the trade deadline.

The Reds will receive pitcher Nick Masset and infielder Danny Richar in return.

Sources said the Reds and White Sox will essentially "split" what remains on Griffey's contract this season, along with the cost of his $4 million buyout for 2009. The Reds had a $16.5 million club option for 2009 on Griffey, but Chicago did not have to exercise the option as part of the deal.

Richar, 25, came to the White Sox from Arizona in a trade for outfielder Aaron Cunningham in June 2007. He's hitting .262 in 62 games with Triple-A Charlotte this season.

Masset, formerly of the Texas organization, came to Chicago as part of the John Danks-Brandon McCarthy trade in December 2006. He's 1-0 with a 4.63 ERA in 32 relief appearances for the White Sox this year.

The Reds approached Griffey on Wednesday night in Houston and asked if he would waive his contractual rights to accept a deal to the White Sox, according to a baseball source. Griffey had the right to veto any trade because he has 10 years of major league service time and five years with the Reds.

The trade was first reported by FoxSports.com.

Griffey, 38, is hitting .245 with 15 home runs for Cincinnati this season. On June 9, he joined Barry Bonds, Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, Willie Mays and Sammy Sosa as the sixth player in history to hit 600 homers.

While the Reds (51-58) languish in their division, the White Sox (60-46) lead the AL Central by 1½ games over the Minnesota Twins and 5½ over the Detroit Tigers.

Griffey hit his 15th home run of the season in Wednesday night's 9-5 win over Houston. It was the 608th of his career, moving him within one of Sosa for fifth on the all-time list. Griffey extended his hitting streak to 12 games and has 1,139 extra-base hits, one behind Ty Cobb for 10th all time.

Central Concern

Ken Griffey Jr. has faced a total of 11 pitchers currently on the Twins and Tigers staffs -- the teams fighting the White Sox in the AL Central race. Here are his career numbers against each team's current pitching staff.

Ken Griffey Jr. vs.
Tigers, Twins Pitchers
Category Vs. Twins Vs. Tigers
BA .364 .306
HR 5 2
RBI 7 8
Slg 1.091 .468
This isn't the first time White Sox general manager Kenny Williams has made a run at Griffey. In 2005, the White Sox tried to trade three prospects to Cincinnati for Griffey. But Carl Lindner, then the CEO of the Reds, reportedly stepped in and vetoed the trade because Chicago wanted Cincinnati to pay 60 percent of the $40 million-plus that was owed to Griffey at the time.

Some media outlets have categorized Griffey as untradable because of the widespread perception he would insist on having his $16.5 million option exercised in conjunction with a deal. But sources said Griffey was willing to consider returning to Cincinnati for a lower annual price if the Reds might consider tacking an extra year onto his deal.

It's believed Griffey is just as concerned with where he fits in Chicago as the financial ramifications. The White Sox have Jermaine Dye in right field, Nick Swisher in center and Carlos Quentin in left, with Paul Konerko at first base and Jim Thome at DH.

When Konerko was on the disabled list recently with an oblique injury, the White Sox moved Swisher to first base and played Brian Anderson and Dewayne Wise in center field. Konerko, Chicago's team captain, returned on July 8. He's hitting .214, and there have been calls for manager Ozzie Guillen to bench him. The White Sox went 13-7 when Konerko was on the disabled list.

But as Guillen told Chicago reporters this week, Swisher is hitting just slightly better than Konerko at .230.

''People say, 'Put Konerko on the bench, do this with Konerko, do that with Konerko,'" Guillen said in the Chicago Sun-Times on Wednesday. "Who's going to play first? Swisher? Oh. Do me a favor, check the book first and check Swisher and Konerko's averages, and it's not that much different.''

Thanks for the info Greg!  I don't think giving up Swisher is that great of an idea since he doesn't make nearly as much as Thome.  I would rather send Jim away for a relief pitcher.

They just announced that we are giving up Nick Masset and Danny Richar for Griffey.  I can live with that.  Richar was not going to take Ramirez' place at 2nd anytime soon. Masset has been horrible lately.  I look at this as something for nothing.  It's like Dennis Rodman for Will Perdue.  But you're right, we need pitching.  Stone speculated a Swisher for Huston Street trade.  I love Swish but I think that trade could make sense.

What this means is better defense at first and better defense in CF plus more offense too.  I don't know who he was traded for yet but I guess I was wrong about Konerko and Thome platooning at DH and Konerkoa and Swisher platooning at 1st.

AP source: Griffey agrees to trade with White Sox<

CINCINNATI (AP)—Ken Griffey Jr. agreed Thursday to accept a trade to the Chicago White Sox, leaving it up to the commissioner's office to approve the deal because money is involved, a person with knowledge of the discussions told The Associated Press.

The Cincinnati Reds outfielder has the right to block any deal, but agreed to move to the White Sox after getting more information about the proposed trade. The person familiar with the talks spoke on condition of anonymity because the teams are not commenting.

Griffey joined his hometown Reds before the 2000 season, agreeing to a nine-year, $116.5 million deal. The 38-year-old outfielder makes $12.5 million this season, and there's an option for 2009 at a $16.5 million salary. If a team doesn't want to pick up next year's option, Griffey will be owed a $4 million buyout under his contract.

Griffey became the sixth player to reach 600 career homers this season, but has struggled at the plate. He's batting .245 with 15 homers and 53 RBIs despite playing in one of the most homer-friendly ballparks in Cincinnati.

Once one of baseball's premier players, Griffey has never reached the World Series and has not even been in the playoffs since 1997 with Seattle.

The Reds were interested in dealing Griffey because of the size of his contract and their plummet after the All-Star break, which dropped them back to near the bottom of the NL Central, 13 1/2 games out of first place. The Reds haven't had a winning season since 2000.

The White Sox lead the AL Central by 1 1/2 games over Minnesota, giving Griffey a rare chance to play in a pennant race. He could play center field for Chicago, with Nick Swisher to first base in place of slumping Paul Konerko. After Chicago lost to Minnesota 6-5 on Tuesday night, manager Ozzie Guillen indicated he was considering moving Swisher to first base, but he wasn't confident anyone could take his place in center.

Swisher and Konerko could split the job at first, or Konerko and Jim Thome could platoon as the designated hitter. The White Sox are set in left and right field with Carlos Quentin and Jermaine Dye.

Griffey was an All-Century center fielder with Seattle, but his speed has diminished in the last few years because of age and injury. The Reds moved him to right field before the 2007 season, a switch that the outfielder initially disliked. Rookie Jay Bruce currently plays center for Cincinnati.

The trade that united Griffey with his hometown team in 2000 was hailed as a major breakthrough for the franchise, but turned out to be far less than expected. After the 2002 season, former general manager Jim Bowden tried to trade Griffey to San Diego for Phil Nevin, who used his no-trade clause to block the deal.

Bowden was trying to work out a deal with the Yankees in 2003 before Griffey got hurt. The White Sox also have shown an interest in Griffey, but Reds ownership was reluctant to trade its most prominent player as he closed in on 600 homers.

The prospective deal was first reported by Foxsports.com.
