Since 1959 the Red Sox have appeared in far more postseason
games than the White Sox. Might have a better overall
regular-season record, too, so based on that the White Sox
can be lumped into the same category...

I think the White Sox need a new Scouting Director lol.  He would do this ten more times???  That is the stupidest thing I have heard of in a long time.  You would think Mr. Shaffer would learn from a mistake, not say he would repeat it over and over and over again.  Lots of great athletes in other sports have failed miserably at baseball such as Michael Jordan, John Elway and Wayne Gretzky who are arguably the greatest players at their position in the history of their sport.  Also don't nickname a player as being the "Next" anything.  That is a lot of pressure to put on a young player.  Anyway I hope the Sox scouting department can forget about finding the best athletes and instead concentrate on finding the best talent and potential such as Chase Utley, Dontrelle Willis, Jason Bay and Grady Sizemore who were all picked after JoBo was in that draft.

White Sox strike out with Borchard draft

`The next McGwire' didn't pan out the way Chicago had hoped

PHIL ROGERS
Chicago Tribune

You couldn't have blamed Duane Shaffer if he had hung up the phone, claiming there was no Duane Shaffer at this number.

After all, how would you like to explain investing $5.3 million of your boss' money in a dry well?

But the Chicago White Sox's scouting director doesn't believe he owes an apology for Joe Borchard.

"If I had to do it over again, I would do it 10 more times," Shaffer said Monday. "You don't come across athletes like Joe Borchard every day."

Borchard, as of Monday, was the newest Seattle Mariner. White Sox general manager Ken Williams traded him for left-hander Matt Thornton, the Mariners' 1998 first-round pick.

Until Arizona gave shortstop Justin Upton $6.1 million this winter, no amateur had received a bigger bonus than the White Sox paid Borchard in 2000. Considered the best power hitter to come from college since Mark McGwire, he also was Stanford's quarterback.

Unfortunately, he never cut down enough on his strikeouts. He spent parts of the past four seasons at Class AAA Charlotte, and probably was headed back if he had stayed in the organization. He hit .191 with 12 homers and 93 strikeouts in 298 major-league at-bats.

"Obviously I'm disappointed, no question," Shaffer said.

The 2000 draft was the kind that makes scouting directors look bad. The Cubs chose third and got prep shortstop Luis Montanez, who was converted to the outfield and needed six years to climb to Class AA. Colorado took pitcher Matt Harrington at No. 7.

The White Sox picked 12th, and Borchard was there. St. Louis, which had the 13th pick and the real McGwire, was preparing to take the prospect known as "the next McGwire."

Borchard's best chance to stick with Chicago was probably in 2003, but he fouled a ball off his foot, breaking it.

"I want to say he didn't get an opportunity to play every day (in the big leagues) and get 500 at-bats under his belt," Shaffer said. "You can use any excuse you want to use, I guess. He just didn't pan out."

I have visited the trophy a couple of times and it's really cool being that close!!  I wish they would let people hold it.  I know the Red Sox fans got to hold it.  And anyone who thinks there are more Red Sox fans than there are White Sox fans is just crazy.  The lines here are a lot longer than they were in that area.  They might have more dweebs throughout the country thanks mostly in part to the BooSox being a complete and utter failure and choke job for so many years (just like the Cubs) since people like to root for the underdog.

What, me worry? Not about these Sox

March 28, 2006

BY JAY MARIOTTI SUN-TIMES COLUMNIST

MESA, Ariz. — Certainly, there are issues. Bobby Jenks has either a ``commitment'' problem or a ``fat'' problem, depending on whether you side with a subtle general manager or the Blizzard of Oz. Scott Podsednik, your resident catalyst, has groin and shoulder situations as Opening Night nears. Then there's the new reality of baseball, that no World Series champion has repeated in the current decade.

``I told them that 2005 is over,'' Ozzie Guillen said of the White Sox. ``We're going to be a target to everyone in baseball.''

So why, after years of dogging this franchise's every move like a private investigator on speed, do I have no great concerns or acute psychological naggings about the Sox? Why do I sit in HoHoKam Park, where the problematic Cubs are happy when Mark Prior is merely able to make 30 light tosses, and expect the Sox to cruise through a relatively stress-free regular season? Why don't I even fear the mouth of Guillen, figuring he no longer can shock us with his free-speech rants while making me laugh — if not Dusty Baker — when he called off Monday's game in the ninth inning because of a so-called pitching shortage?

Because the Sox have credibility, that's why.

Once you win a championship, the pissants quiet down. Better than that, the Sox spent the entire offseason trying to win another and building a improved product, hard to believe after becoming the first team since the 1927 Yankees to lead a season wire-to-wire and sweep the World Series. All we ever asked Jerry Reinsdorf and Ken Williams to do is think big, spend money commensurate to their market size and win the civic oneupsmanship war over the Cubs. Now that they've broken through and commanded bragging rights until Cubdom answers — which means, forevermore — there is a comfort zone surrounding the Sox that demands faith instead of alarm.

Say Jenks eats his way from cult-hero status to a Waffle House on a minor-league bus stop. Say his weight doesn't come down from the estimated 270 and his well-chronicled personal demons make him wobble a little. Say Guillen grows tired of his manager-to-manchild talks, such as the one last week when he said: ``I told him when you show up out of shape, you're ruining 25 guys wearing this uniform. You're not ruining myself or you, you're ruining your teammates that come in shape. That means you show up and don't give a [bleep] about them. He understands. I told him, `When you're fat and you are good, you're a strong guy. When you're fat and you're horse[bleep], you're fat.'''

Williams able to find answers

A nightmare, some might say. I counter with Neal Cotts and Cliff Politte. They can't close, some might say. I counter with memories of last year, when Williams summoned Jenks from the minors as a lot of us laughed — and watched him become the beast of October. Yes, it would be more encouraging to have the proven Dustin Hermanson in a supportive closing role, but when the man's back is in such periodic pain that he talks of retirement, don't expect much. And if Cotts and Politte are better off in their usual setup roles, then what stops Williams from dipping into his golden pool of starting pitching — or using minor-league prospects — and acquiring a closer at midseason?

Podsednik's injuries bother me more, if only because the man married former Playboy Playmate Lisa Dergan in the offseason and, thus, should be happier and healthier than anyone in camp. OK, it goes deeper than that. The club's late-season slide happened largely because Podsednik was in and out of the lineup, and if you want to repeat as champs, your leadoff hitter can't be an intermittent factor again. It will be harder to replace him than Jenks. But then, a groin tweak isn't a serious matter. And besides, Williams already has answered some of the offensive doubts with his acquisitions, including Jim Thome, who ripped two more home runs Monday against the Cubs and doesn't resemble a health concern.

``It means I'm getting close,'' he said. ``You don't try to talk about it too much. You just keep doing it.''

If some of us aren't entirely certain if the Sox really won the World Series, the newly released DVD collection serves as verification. So does the mood of the club, which is relaxed and focused without the Big Blurt distractions of Frank Thomas. Oh, there will be Thome-Thomas comparisons all season, or at least until Thomas hits the disabled list. But if that is the biggest non-Ozzie controversy, it will be a smooth regular season. You have every reason to anticipate more greatness from the rotation. The offense will be better than a year ago, much better if Podsednik is healthy all season. The only hiccup could be in the bullpen, recalling how former Sox reliever Keith Foulke struggled last season and prevented the Red Sox from repeating.

But what team doesn't have a few headaches? George Steinbrenner has promised a championship in 2006, but what if his rotation breaks down? Aren't Randy Johnson and Mike Mussina getting old? Isn't Carl Pavano a bust and Jaret Wright the Kerry Wood of the American League? Oh, the every-day lineup is awesome and Mariano Rivera hasn't lost much as the mother of all closers. But Johnny Damon alone doesn't necessarily bring renewed glory to the Bronx.

Strange but true: No complaints

Warped as it sounds, part of the fun of a 162-game, six-month baseball season is finding reasons to complain and moan. Sox fans have done it well through time. But I watched a few of them wander through a predominantly Cubs crowd at HoHoKam, and damned if they didn't have a certain glow to them, as if their lives are complete now. If the Sox didn't win a game the next 10 years, these fans wouldn't care. They are locked in a euphoria that should burst Sunday night, when the Sox open at home against a formidable Cleveland team, and next Tuesday, when they receive their rings in the most unfathomable of all Chicago baseball scenes.

Hard as it is for me to spit out these words, there is nothing to gripe about. Not even the Blizzard of Oz has a complaint as camp breaks, other than the ever-growing media mobs. ``Now,'' he said, ``there are 30 or 40 reporters around to see how big my mouth really is.''

It's still big, just like Bobby Jenks' torso. But not nearly as big as a team's hopes.

Cotts was driven after no-scar event

March 28, 2006

BY JOE COWLEY Staff Reporter

TUCSON, Ariz. -- On that rare occasion that Neal Cotts actually does think about New York City 2003, it's because he's asked.

After all, that was the day the White Sox left-hander was supposed to have his career come to an end.

Four runs, three hits, five walks and only one out recorded in a start against the New York Yankees. The kind of outing that gets a manager fired and scars a young rookie pitcher for life.

Only half of that proved to be the case.

Former Sox manager Jerry Manuel wanted to give Mark Buehrle an extra day of rest in that late August series in the Bronx, with the Sox in the midst of a pennant chase with the Minnesota Twins. Cotts -- then a rookie -- was coming off a one-run, five-inning performance against the Texas Rangers, so Manuel figured why not.

"There was way too much made of it,'' Cotts said. "I didn't even give myself a chance to compete in that game. I threw maybe 10 strikes the 20 minutes I was out there. It wasn't Jerry's fault. It wasn't because I was intimidated. It was just a bad day.''

Cotts was sent down to Class AA Birmingham two days after that start, and Manuel was fired at the end of the season when the Sox finished four games behind the Twins.

"I've been asked about that so many times,'' Cotts said. "For a while, I thought that was all I would be known for. People don't understand that it ended up helping me out because, honestly, it [ticked] me off. It was one thing to do it but another to have to talk about it for a year.

"It set the tone that, 'You're really not to the level you thought you were.' It made me get better.''

Few imagined that would be the case, especially as quickly as it has happened.

Cotts was a huge factor in 2005, posting a 4-0 record with a 1.94 ERA in the regular season, and was even better in the playoffs with a 1-0 record in six scoreless appearances, stranding all seven inherited runners.

He enters 2006 as one of the top left-handed relievers in the game whom few know about. Instead, the focus with Cotts tends to be on that game in New York almost three years ago, and the fact that he has a growing female following that would make most boy bands jealous.

It's not uncommon at Sox games to see female fans holding up "Neal Hots'' signs or wearing T-shirts that read "Mrs. Cotts.''

"I haven't gotten any [fan mail from women],'' the soft-spoken 26-year-old joked. "I guess I'm underappreciated. Most of the girls that do cheer for me, I don't know if they can write because they're so young. I'm thinking once I'm 30, they'll all be out of high school then.''

The bad news for all those young women is Cotts has a girlfriend. Worse news for opposing hitters: He just might be better on the mound now than he was last year.

"If success is dictated by how hard you work, he's going to have an awful lot of success,'' pitching coach Don Cooper said. "He pays the price.

"I can remember the two big conversations we had last year. The first came in the offseason where I talked to him about, 'Hey, let's take one more step forward.' The next came in Colorado, and I remember saying, 'Whether you realize it or not, you made that step. The next challenge is can you put yourself in the elite group of left-handed relievers?' He did that.''

Cotts remembered that conversation, as well.

"Every talk we've had has been kind of like he sets goals, sets the standard of what he wants,'' Cotts recalled. "Sometimes you need a little criticism to get you going. It challenges you.''

Cooper and manager Ozzie Guillen have laid down a new challenge for Cotts this spring. He's the first option to close games after Bobby Jenks. Although he blew the save opportunity against the Cubs on Monday, the Sox have complete confidence in him answering the bell when the games matter.

"If there's a game where [Guillen] calls me and he says he wants me to finish it, I'll go out there and try to do my job the best I can,'' Cotts said.

In other words, 2003 is a distant memory.

"Let's face it, there was a lot of criticism when he started in New York,'' Cooper said. "I've been saying, if that would have ruined his career, then he's not the guy we thought he was anyway. And we've all seen first-hand that's not the case.''

``It means I'm getting close,’’ he said. ``You don't try to talk about it too much. You just keep doing it.’’

``Now,’’ he said, ``there are 30 or 40 reporters around to see how big my mouth really is.’’

It's still big, just like Bobby Jenks' torso. But not nearly as big as a team's hopes.

Sorry everybody. I guess there are two satellite radio companies and
maybe more which is stupid because who the hell pays for radio to
begin with lol.

Anyway XM Satellite Radio is the one with the Major League Baseball
games and you can get a free 3 day trial with them by going to this
site: http://xmro.xmradio.com/xstream/index.jsp

The Sirius trial is also only 3 days as the cheapskates at Jeep and
Sirius already expired that promo code they gave at the Auto Show
last month. Sorry...I thought it was still good!

I got this at the Chicago Auto Show and thought maybe some of you who are out of state or maybe just like listening to the radio might enjoy this.  I believe they have broadcasts of every Major League team on here plus other sports radio stations and of course music too.  Just follow these directions to get your 7 day free pass:

Click on "Listen" in the upper right hand corner.  If a window doesn't pop-up, you might have to disable any pop-up blocking software that might be running

In the pop-up window (the player), choose "Sign Up Now"

After entering your personal information, enter the promo code "COMMANDER06" to get your 7 days of free listening.

Check your email for a password from Sirius and then return to the website in step 1 and this time choose "Listen" in the upper right hand corner.

Now click on "Guest Login" and enjoy!

Thome looks ready.  Let's all hope he can stay healthy for the entire season or at least half of it lol.  The spring training record is meaningless as Ozzie was not trying to win ANY of these games.  He could have won many more games had he used regulars instead of rookies in key situations in those games.  He would never do that in a game that counts.  Anyway at least we beat the Cubs once and hopefully again today lol.

White Sox ready to defend crown
South Siders open regular season next Sunday night

TUCSON, Ariz. -- For those who have felt an increasing sense of dread as each loss piled on the White Sox ledger during Cactus League play, it's now time to forget about the first 24 games of Spring Training.

The White Sox began to feature more of their starting players together in the same lineup on Sunday against Kansas City, along with having more of them in the game for a longer period of time. Manager Ozzie Guillen will continue that plan up through the final four days in Arizona, in preparation for Sunday night's 2006 opener against the Indians at U.S. Cellular Field.

In fact, Guillen hopes to have his final 25-man roster set on the bus ride back from Mesa on Monday night, after the White Sox second and final spring game against the Cubs. The South Siders are pretty close now, as six expected cuts on Sunday left the team with 28 players in camp.

That number actually should read 27, with Guillen all but confirming after Sunday's victory that reliever Dustin Hermanson will start the 2006 season on the 15-day disabled list. Hermanson told Guillen before the contest against the Royals that the pain was still there in his back, and that he was unable to go back-to-back days.

Hermanson was scratched from Sunday's scheduled appearance, after throwing one inning against the Mariners on Friday in Peoria.

"He told me a couple of things I wasn't happy about, but it's not his fault," Guillen said of Hermanson, who did not talk to the media before leaving the Kino Sports Complex. "We need him to go back-to-back days and he can't. It's a little too late in camp to have him with us.

"I want him to be 100 percent ready. I don't think he'll ever be 100 percent, but I want him to be good enough to go out and pitch."

Guillen admitted that the constant questioning of Hermanson in regard to his back not only wore thin on the veteran right-hander but also on Guillen and the team itself.

"It's not easy coming here every day asking, 'How do you feel, how do you feel?'" Guillen said. "It's like punishing your kids, 'Did you do your homework? Did you do your homework?' I don't want to deal with that and I don't think he wants to deal with that."

One option for Hermanson is to stay back in Tucson, during extended Spring Training, and continue his rehab program. It makes better sense than a trip to Chicago, in Guillen's opinion, with Hermanson and his family living in Phoenix.

When asked about retirement as a possibility for Hermanson, Guillen could only answer in reference to his own decision to walk away from the game after the 2000 season with Tampa Bay. It's not an option that Hermanson, 33, has remotely entertained for the immediate future.

"You deal with pain almost every day when you're in this game for that long," said Guillen in regard to retirement for Hermanson, who will earn $3 million in 2006, with a club option for $3.5 million in 2007. "But the thing is, can you have fun coming here every day? Can you have fun being in the trainer's room all the time? Can you have fun performing in pain?

"If you still feel you can enjoy this game, you should stay. But if it's to the point where you'd rather be with your family, I respect that. When you take the uniform off, it's tough to put it back. Hopefully, he can be healthy and help us in the future."

The roster decisions become clear cut with Hermanson out of the picture. Left-handers Boone Logan and Javier Lopez and right-hander Tim Redding are competing for the 11th and final spot on the pitching staff. Logan appears to have the upper hand, allowing just one earned run in 10 1/3 innings this spring, covering seven games. Logan also gives the White Sox a chance to develop one of their own at the Major League level, much as they did with Mark Buehrle in 2000.

While general manager Ken Williams, assistant general manager Rick Hahn and Guillen focus on the final personnel decisions, the players turn their attention to a slightly greater sense of urgency on the field. A game at HoHoKam Park against the Cubs, which automatically increases the level of play even if it takes place at a neighborhood park, just might be the perfect way to start the final Spring Training push for the defending World Series champions.

"If we go up there and they kill us, it's not like it's for bragging rights or anything," said Buehrle, who makes his final spring start for the White Sox on Monday, opposed by the Cubs' Greg Maddux.

"It's more than just a Spring Training game, with the atmosphere and the fans caring a little more," Buehrle added. "It's going to be a little more adrenaline, and obviously, it's my last start of the spring so I want to go out there and do good."

To a man, the White Sox have paid very little attention to their poor Cactus League record. The only time Guillen spoke out was after his team lost the first six games, and the manager didn't feel the right effort and attitude were being shown on the field.

Getting a true read on pitching or hitting in Arizona is a tough thing to do, with the winds swirling as high as 25 mph, at times. Watching how the White Sox perform during this final week, though, might give a slightly more accurate glimpse of what to expect from the season ahead.

"We are going to get everyone together this week, get everyone on the same page and start gunning," said White Sox left fielder Scott Podsednik.

"But we could still go 6-0 here the last week, and once the bell rings [for the regular season], it still could be different," Buehrle added. "We all need to step it up. We are getting down to the main core guys, and we have to say that even those games don't count right now, it's getting closer and we can't wait until April 2 to just turn it on. Let's get it going down here and leave here on a good note."

It doesn't mean anything, I remember years when the

proceded to lose 90 games that year. The year the
