Dear XOBA Rider,

It is with great sadness that I must announce that I have to step down as
Director of the Across Ohio Bicycle Adventure. I, like many of our friends,
relatives, and neighbors have been negatively impacted by our national economy.
I was informed in March of this year that my job was being eliminated. It was
difficult preparing for XOBA while looking for employment. However, my faith
never diminished during this difficult time in my life. I am grateful to all
that have provided words of encouragement and support over the past 5 months. I
am particularly grateful to XOBA's executive committee who assumed more
responsibility during this time.

I have accepted the position of Economic Development Director for the City of
Farmington, Missouri. My start date is set for September.

The planning for next year's ride has already begun with contacts having been
established at the desired overnight locations and preliminary routing being
drawn. This planning is being been done jointly, so there will be no sudden
changes to the organization.

This contact information will be transferred, along with all other associated
planning documents and contacts as soon as the Board approves the new Director.

The volunteers (planning committee) who have been helping with routing, marking,
literature/digest writing and other planning for the past four years will be
staying on in the same or expanded roles.

When I assumed leadership of this event from Randy, I promised to adhere to the
mission and values of XOBA. I will assure you that the new leader will also
adhere to these established principles.

Again, thanks for the ride and thank you for trusting me with one week of your
vacation time. You have provided me a lifetime of memories.

Ride on, Ride Safe

Walt D. Williams
XOBA Director 2006-2009

PS. The riding in Missouri leaves you breathless……(scenic!!!!)

Great article Dan. Since we left the ride on Wednesday we missed out on the last several days activities. It was good to hear about some of the highlights offered on Thur-Sat.

We really missed the people, but not the hills and the rain. I had a song almost ready for the No-Talent Show so maybe I can offer it next year.

Congratulations to everyone who completed the week...we're honored to know you!

Very nice article, Dan. I experienced much of what you wrote about, except, of
course, the century options! I'll leave them to the more energetic. I really
liked the routes we took, though.

There's always the 10% that don't get the word, and I was among them the morning
the rain stopped at 7:30. So, I was out taking down my tent, and getting soaked,
at 7:10. At least I figured out how to pack my bags without getting too much
water in them.

I, too, enjoyed that rapid descent on the last day. I was a little leery of the
road surface at first, but soon got comfortable and let it go when I saw the
little rise after the bottom. Hitting 45 let me coast up that one like it wasn't
there.

This was my 7th XOBA, and it was among the best. I'm looking forward to next
year, and especially the year after that....

Too late for the talent show:

My Granny (think Al Jolson and My Mammy)

Granny, how I love ya, how I love ya,

Dear little Granny.

I used to walk up miles

But now I'm all smiles

'Cause I got my Gran -an - n -y!

Man, was this trip hilly or what? Those first few days lulled us into a false
sense of confidence. I sang that song a lot last week, or at least when I had
the breath left to do so.

Hi all,
You all are nuts! And I mean that in the nicest possible way.

When I read this on Friday night, I forgot to mention how it was written: each
person could only see the line that came before his or hers. That's why it gets
kind of loopy. Or, maybe we're just loopy to begin with.

(If I didn't get your line quite right, lemme know, and I shall edit.)

(I've also attached this as a file.)

Fondly,
Nancy

***

Our XOBA Poem
(written by lots of us, one line at a time, July 30, 2009)

One Sunny day in July
I was riding my bike across Ohio
and I discovered how much bigger hills are in rain.
Still I press on, treating them with distain.
Up another hill, oh what a pain.
I must be crazy but I'll do it all again.

And again. By this time in the week I'll wonder
WHY
And now the last stand of adventure is done
until the morning rise.
And rise we shall
On top of the next hill!

My heart rate will be lower
My riding rate won't be slower
My queen-sized airbed helps me sleep like a baby
A full tummy helps considerably
But it won't get you all the way home…
What's at home?

Rest and peace
Work and play
on a bike
take your hands off the handle bars
and your feet off the pedals
and wipe the sweat from your nose

because you are really hot.
I must need more sunscreen.
Where's the next hill… we've only done 25,000 feet of climb this week.
And the ice cream with chunks of chocolate we seek.
That we have eaten all week.
And it has given me sore feet.

And I'm concentrating on foot right now
The best food is ice cream and how
It comes from the amazing cow
If you have tiny fingers, it comes from a sow
If you have fat toes it's the fault of the crows
With big noses

And black stocking hoses
Covered ol' Moses…
With sandals over his toeses
And sunscreen on the noses
Soap and shampoo in the showers
Flowers along the rolling hills

Bumps and holes rushing down the slopes
Hit a hole and broke my spokes
Got a flat, offered help by lots of folks.
The hills get longer the longer you ride
But the showers are good at the end of the day
What goes up must come down

and then go up again. Over and over again.
And again, and again, and again.
Mirror, mirror on the wall
Who is the princess of the ball?
The downhills and ice cream were just right
but the uphills were too short.

Roses are red, pickles are green,
you got the shape of a B-19
dropping riders like Team Astana.
Riding in the rain makes me cry for my mommy
I sure do wish I had vacationed in the Bahamas!
The beach is a lot flatter than Revenge Hill

But won't give you nearly the thrill
And what could be more scenic than XOBA.

If you are sure you want to sleep inside every night you don't need to bring a tent, but...some of the places may not have AC ,ant it might be cooler in a tent. You can always put your name on you tent and leave it in the truck.

There has never been a charge for sleeping inside and I've been doing this tour for 10 years.
See you tomorrow,
Ride safe,Sally

Hi everyone from a first time rider,
If I plan to take advantage of gym indoor sleeping each night, should I
even bring my tent? And is there an additional charge for indoor
sleeping as on GOBA? Thanks for the advice.
Judy

I can offer up my sister.  We live in Lexington KY and will be returning, through Cincinnati.

She's driving, but I'm sure she wouldn't mind a free lunch (LOL).

You can give me a call on my cell - 859-396-9052.  We are leaving early Friday afternoon to head for New Castle.

Hello...looking for anyone who may be able to provide a ride from New Castle to anywhere towards Cincinnati after the ride on Saturday, August 1st. Gas and lunch on me!

I live 25 miles from the start point in Eaton, and does not make much sense to drive to New Castle, take a bus back, ride my bike to New Castle, then drive back again.

Appreciate any help! Anything close to Cinci is fine, just avoid a potential 10 hour round trip for my family.

Thank you!

Jim - that would be a HUGE help and much appreciated. Saves a lot of traveling
this Saturday. Will find you in Eaton after the bus arrival and we can finalize
details. Thanks again!

of us and I can easily get four including bikes and luggage in my pickup. Just
let me know I can help.
