Things have cleared up and it was a nice
warm and clear day, although we could see
all the dark clounds and rain in Nevada
and the snow falling on the California side.
Shorts and t-shirts are out and so are the
sun bathers at the pool and the sun block.
The morning's ride headed east and included
the 4,500' and 17 mile climb past Hell's Gate
on the way to the Daylight Pass, the only
place down here where one can make cell phone
calls.
A bit chilly on the way down at 50+ mph but
a spectacular view when the sky is blue and
the valley is clear. A total of 65 miles
brings us within a few riding hours of the
400 mile mark -- which, after Paul cut the
climb short, Reene and Jeanne are now the only
candidates for. Those three are also still in
the hunt for the "rode-every-day" price after
over half of the group headed home yesterday.
Sheri, who just arrived, got on her bike and
did, on her first try, get to see "daylight."
Another sunny day predicted for tomorrow should
allow us to ride early and this time the boss
will make sure that we make it all 4,956' and
all 24 uphill miles to Towne Pass from Stovepipe
Wells. It takes well under an hour to get back
down to sea level, our camp, and a 48-mile day.
We will then deal with how we are going to get
back to Chico -- or maybe it will be easier to
just wait here in DV until all the storms pass.
Get ready...
