Saturday, May 9th, Ferndale.
Event website, with info about the various
distance options (10, 25, 50, 64, 100):

The 100-mile group starts at 7:00am.
The other rides later.
We usually leave Chico early Fri afternoon
so we get there before it gets dark.
Camping next to the Fairgrounds is free.
So is sleeping in your car.
Motels/Hotels in Fortuna:

Great support and rest stops with killer
sandwiches -- plenty of food afterward.
There are a few stores on the ride but if
you are doing the 100-miler there is only
one out there -- at the bottom after the
"big" climb in Honeydew at 54 miles -- the
main rest stops are at the 50-mile half-way
point (Immortal Tree) and at 65 miles at
the A.W. Way Park Campground in

The "big" climb is the Panter Gap that starts
at 40 miles. Despite the fast downhill there
are hairpins at the bottom where 10mph signs
really mean 5mph. The "Wall" is at 80 miles
and is followed by a quick decent and then the
"Shadow of the Wall," a 6-mile climb starting
at 84 miles. The last 6 miles are downhill all
the way to the finish. 10,976 feet of climbing
for the 98 miles.

The weather is always chancy -- although it
only drizzled on one occasion I did it -- I
have heard that some years it did rain quite
nicely (not that we care) so bring a range
of clothing.
It is a 5 hour drive over there to Ferndale
(the town is still there despite what you might
have seen in "Outbreak"). The easiest way over
there is to take 299 out of Redding to Arcata
and then 101 down and turn off to Ferndale.
Taking 36 out of Red Bluff is for those who
are immune to car sickness and love to drive
up and down Honey Run Rd. for 3 hours straight.
We can head home after the Saturday ride or stay
overnight -- and ride a 35-mile loop ride before
heading back to Chico.
