THANKS for all the advice and info. i ran outside (i've been doing
mostly treadmill training) today with the family (kids in stoller and
hubby pushing them).....i did really well and beat my treadmill time!
i'm getting excited about next week!

I too am training for St Jude and made the big mistake of doing my 9miler yesterday to get it out of the was as my running partners will be gone this weekend but it was so very very hot yesterday - I had the worst case of heat exhaustion I ever experienced - it was not pretty. My running parners literally held my head under a faucet at a golf course we passed --- I am sure you will have better weather tomorow - I think this think finally broke...
Good luck

Have really enjoyed being a part of Intermediate I and thanks to all the great coaches. I am training for the St Jude Marathon and am doing long runs every Sat. till Dec. 1.
Tomorrow i am doing 9 miles and wanted to know if there was anyone in the Midtown area that would be interested in running with me. I am slow but steady around 12 or
so minute miles. Thanks and can't wait to see you all at the race on the 8th. Madelene

Sheila,
a. the best thing to do is line up per speed. The fastest in the front and the slowest in the rear. If you get too far in front of the starting line, the faster folks might bump into you trying to pass. You should be safe in the middle of the line.
b. yes there will be marks on the ground and a sign above it telling you which mile you are at. Sometimes they have someone there calling out the times.
c.spectators can wait any where they want. It great to have them spread out for support instead of all of them at the finish line. Its up to them on what they would like to do.
d. Being it starts at 9 am, I will be there around 8:15 so I can get a decent parking spot, chat with everyone, get the goodie bag and return it to my car and last but not least, hit the porta potty before the race.
If you go back into the thread here you should see a thread giving pointers for the 5k race. I think they might answer any other questions you may have. It was written by Hilde Haynes and all the ideas came from the power walking coaches.
don't worry about anything but having a great time!
Hi, FIRST, i want to think the Memphis Runners Club and all the coaches who volunteered their time for this great workshop!
i've missed the past few mondays b/c of some family stuff, but i've still been training!! hooray! since next saturday will be my FIRST EVER race, i have a few questions. maybe there's a website that explains 5K's somewhere that you can direct me to?
questions: a. are we "staged" at the start? like do the advance runners start first, then intermed, etc? b. will there be markers along the way to show our distance? c. should "spectators" just wait at the finish line? d. how early before the start should we get there?
i probably have some more, but those are the ones i'm thinking about now.

I was in the Beginner's group the first week, but injured my knee on my second night. I was released from the doctor yesterday who said that he didn't see any reason for me not to pick up and start the program again - which I intend to do on my own.
I paid the $15 on the first night we met, but have never picked up a shirt. I wasn't sure if the $15 covered a shirt or the race. Since I have not been able to participate since the first week, I obviously will not be running the September 8 race, but I plan to walk. I most recently particpated in the Arthritis Walk and don't anticipate any problems completing this one by walking. My question is this - what do I need to do to participate in the race?
You all are awesome and by this time next year when you offer the program again, my hope is that I can easily participate in the Beginners group again or move up a notch!
Thanks!

There is not a headphone rule at Chick Fil A as far as I can see. At the women's run however, we really prefer if you do not wear them. There are many reasons but the main one is that this is a group event - we all trained together and we all want to run together - after all we have all met running buddies over the past few weeks right??? Wouldn't it be sad as you see your coaches darting in and out of the crowd, shouting encouragements to you if you could not hear them?????
Although many of us have run solo training runs and long races with the anonymity of an IPOD - we are hoping for a big encouraging group atmosphere on Saturday....and we have some surprises to cheer you on along the way. We want you to hear them. Therefore we hope you do not need your IPOD - that you will be so entertained and excited you won't think about it.

I have been following the training schedule and have been doing my runs in the early morning. I have 3 questions that may have been answered on Monday night #1 - this was the last week & it was to run 4 minutes & walk 1 min for total of 45 - what about next week before the race do we just keep following the 4/1? #2 Where do we go in Shelby Farms the morning of the race & what time to be there & #3 Do we get our race t-shirts when we check in?
Thanks!

recently particpated in the Arthritis Walk and don't anticipate any
problems completing this one by walking. My question is this - what do
I need to do to participate in the race?
You all are awesome and by this time next year when you offer the
program again, my hope is that I can easily participate in the
Beginners group again or move up a notch!
Thanks!
My mom and I live in the Collierville area (more specificaly the
Houston Levee/Baily Station area) and love running with a group...
because of work schedules we can't do Mondays anymore, but just let me
know :)

Since we're posting about continuing to run with a group: Are there any
Collierville runners who would like to get together a little closer to
home? I run at Johnson Park or Cox (or the trail connecting the two),
or around my neighborhood.
I've been in the Intermediate/Beginner's group so I'll warn you that
I'm very slow, but if there are enough of us, we just might find
someone close to our pace. Let me know if you're interested in
starting a group around here- it doesn't have to be Monday nights,
although evenings generally work better for me so my husband can watch
the kids. Send me an e-mail or post to the group!

I'm in the beginning runners group & have not been able to attend the
last 4 Monday night runs due to the extreme heat & upper respiratory
problems I have and starting a new job. I have been following the
training schedule and have been doing my runs in the early morning. I
have 3 questions that may have been answered on Monday night #1 - this
was the last week & it was to run 4 minutes & walk 1 min for total of
45 - what about next week before the race do we just keep following
the 4/1? #2 Where do we go in Shelby Farms the morning of the race &
what time to be there & #3 Do we get our race t-shirts when we check
in?
Thanks!
As for others not in advanced group - if you want to keep meeting and running that is great and we encourage it. Also on www.memphisrunners.com we list all the running groups - you may want to join one or even create a new one. If you do make a new one let me know so I can add it.
I live in Munford, and after last year we kept a group going in my neck of the woods, we meet in and around Munford, Brighton, Millington. If you are in that area and want to be added to my running notification list (right now we do not meet at a set time but rather I post runs each week). then also let me know.
Any coaches and/or participants who want to follow Glen's model and continue to meet are welcome to do so and use this forum for the remainder of the year to stay in touch.

Hi Amanda and all other Advanced Group Runners!
We missed many of you last night! It was a good evening, and the group ran very hard in its last speed workout of the summer. I was proud of everyone. It has been a real pleasure working with this group this summer. Your dedication to the training, especially during this incredible heat wave, has been remarkable, and I can't wait to see how much everyone improves their times on the 5K on September 8.
For those of you who were not there, and in answer to Amanda's query, the Advanced Group will continue to meet on Monday nights just as we did last year. Many of you have a goal to run either the St Jude half or the full marathon in December; so do most of us, so our Monday nights are a good time to stay with a group and feel the motivation and joy of success of everyone. And for those who want to concentrate on other races, the same holds true. You do not have to plan to run half or full marathons, or even be particularly fast, to enjoy running with this group!
We'll start (or continue!) Monday, September 10, at 6:30 pm. We'll meet at the amphitheatre where we began the summer program rather than at the lake. Then later on when the Farms begins to close too early for us, we'll move to the Agricenter. Everyone is welcome to join us!
See you on September 8 for the race and then on the following Monday evening!
Glenn
ps. There will be some folks running next Monday night, Labor Day- September 3, if you are interested. That group will meet at the lake in the usual place.

Hello everyone, I have been running in the Advanced Group and last night one of our coaches mentioned that the advanced group from last year's running clinic continued to meet after the running clinic had ended. I would like to continue running with the advanced group. Please let me know when and where this group meets because I have enjoyed running with the advanced group and would like to keep running with a group.
Thanks, Amanda Brown

Nothing to be scared of - just 800 women out for a Saturday morning run/jog/stroll/walk or crawl. Finishing is the goal - not breaking records. Save that for next year
:-)

Thank you for being so positive. I am scared to run in the 5K. I ran my first one a couple of months ago and I almost died. I am hoping to do much better. I almost quit running , but then met some women on Monday nights that encouraged me to keep going. I didn't care what my time was in the beginning and now I do for some reason. I guess I just want to improve. Thanks for the advice-I need it!

You go girl!
Running is running -no matter the pace. Here is what I suggest - you keep doing the best you can - take walk breaks when and if you need to and then on race day "let er rip" see what you feel up to. Since we are no longer meeting formally you do not have to decide what group you are in any more - look at both training schedules and mix and match as you need.
Do any other coaches have any other ideas?????

I am running about 3 to 4 miles a day very slowly! Should I stay in the walk/run group until the 5K or go to the runners group. I am pretty darn slow!
