Hi Deb,
I am definitely interested but I can't make it this Saturday evening. Was
hoping the meeting could be delayed to next week 27/9.
Cheers,
Roger.

There may be a couple of reasons for the lack of response, deb and chris.
1) it has come up very quickly to digest this info and the need for immediate urgent action may not have been conveyed clearly nor was it obvious that the meeting was this saturday
2) despite the obvious hard work put in by chris, the desire to react by some people may be stymied by them needing more than a few days advance notice to come to a meeting on a saturday night
3) chris uses big words such as "abrogation" and we're still looking them up in the dictionary making our response slow. We windsurf, simple craft for simple people, use simple words.
who do you want at the meeting? what outcome do you need ? what is the agenda. Maybe the lack of response was because what you put forward about the need for competitors to be fully insured was a no-brainer. Can't those fugginkahns at the YA use some of the $50 pa they get from us with virtually zero return to some use? Such as 3rd party insurance.

Hi all,
Chris has expressed concern to me that he has had very few responses to his last email about the class association. This is an important issue, guys - it impacts on out insurance and our ability to hold the Nationals, and Chris has put a lot of work into drafting a Constitution for us. I note that the casual tone of his email may not have got the urgency across, but it would be great to get bit more response on this. Also, since I'm doing the catering, is anyone coming to our place Saturday night? We have a possible celebrity guest who may be disappointed if no-one shows.
Cheers

Thanks to Tim, Lloydie and Roger for their dates; a national calendar is just about ready.
Up here in NSW, we need to get an association going. The YA insurance that sailing club members hold does not cover third-party liability. At the moment if anyone who is not insured with the Aust Windsurfing Association runs over a kid in the shallows, the race organisers could be liable, and I've had enough of having my house on the line even though the chances of anything going wrong are minute. Without an association we also have no cash and no structure. With an association, if we pay $150 to a state windsurfing association we can become an affiliated class and then everyone can get cheap public liability insurance through the Australian Windsurfing Association scheme ($18 per person p.a).
These days, it's not worth having an incorporated body and the AWA does not require one. I think we if we do it right, we can also use their corporate identity as a bit of a hidey-hole if some legal problems such as abrogation arise, too. In the future we can also use YA insurance for the class officers, too, but at the moment they can be covered by the AWA's insurance.
So I've prepared a constitution (attached, with comments in italics). It doesn't seem sensible to restrict to NSW and the AWA president wants it to be national, so it's out there for comments from other states. An association could be a big help in the smaller states like SA, too. The structure I've designed needs work but it's designed to make sure that it's a democratic class.
The plan at the moment is to have a meeting, possibly this Saturday afternoon, to form the association. It may be a bit later but it would be good to get it up and running before the season gets too old and like the calendar, it was something I've not had time to get around to earlier, because of issues like a new job.
As you'll see, cost for people who just want to sail in a local fleet or do one regatta is minimal - $20 to make sure that you are covered if your rig blows away and hits someone, etc.
So.....please provide any feedback and indicate your opinion. Please put yourself forward if you are interested in a position; we'll hold meetings with Skype or something.
For those in NSW, is a meeting at our place in Leichhardt on Saturday evening okay? Any preferred options?

Hi Chris,
All sounds great and I'm keen to be involved.
I can't make it this Saturday evening though. Could you possibly delay
the meeting to Sat 27th? I'm free then and could join you for racing at
Dobroyd followed by the meeting.
Cheers,
Roger.

Re the pumping: I agree with most of the replies to the query. Keep the present rules as they are.
Re. the calandar: Yachting Victoria has asked Parkdale Y.C to again host the Vic. Sailboard Classic. the dates will be 15th - 16th Nov. 2008.
The NOR is just about there. It looks as though we will run as many races (windward - leward) as possible for the Wally Class over the two days and cater for any and all sailboards on a seperate course (beam reaches) on Sat. Arvo only.
I can not belive you managed to find a nude pic. of Stewey, nice scooter

Hi Chris,
I'd be interested in the caravan hire you mentioned. If you could provide some details that would be great.
I like the idea of the sit-down meal. I think it would be best to have it on the Saturday or Sunday and then just a quick presentation on the Monday as some people will probably want to head off then. Maybe we could just do the informal pizzas thing on the Monday after the presentation for those that don't want to head off in a hurry.
With the pumping I think we should stick to the current system of no pumping upwind and unlimited pumping downwind. I think it would be good to have no pumping at the start as with the 30 second pumping rule the less agressive sailors just get hammered by bad air, and just get left way behind after 30 seconds. No pumping at the start would make things more even and more enjoyable for those less agressive sailors.
The windsurfer class association sounds like a great idea. ! I'd be keen to be involved.
I also think it could be a good idea to put together a calendar of all Windsurfer One-Design racing planned for the season at all the different locations.
Cheers, Roger.

I'd be keen to be involved.
I also think it could be a good idea to put together a calendar of all Windsurfer One-Design racing planned for the season at all the different locations.
Cheers, Roger.

Great work on coordinating the nationals. Tassie has gone a
little quiet recently however we have had three fairly consistent sailors out once
a month over winter.
In terms of events, Opening day of the local Dinghy Group sailing
program is Sat 11th October.
Our state champs will be held in conjunction with the Royal
Hobart Regatta and the Tasmanian Yardstick Championships which is Sunday 8th
February. Apart from that we will be conducting our Friday night twilight
series from Sandy Bay Sailing Club starting next month. Dates to be confirmed.
We may get some Sat arvo sailing happening if we get the numbers
but I am not sure if the new boards have arrived yet. I think there are two in
the pipeline...
Cheers

Being in the 50+ age group, I think keeping it simple and straighforward is what made the Windsurfer One Design class so much fun in the first place, and would partly explain its' Renaissance in recent years. Keep with existing rules and format I would say.

I agree with Derek being even older. The other matter is that often tacking in very light winds needs a few pumps to get the board moving again [and to avoid rounding up]. Other than that, I am with Derek in that Bill’s choices numbered 2 or 4 [modified] would be my choice.

G'day Chris,
Regarding the pumping rules, being the old weak (and getting older and weaker by the day) mongrel that I am, I believe the current rules are probably the best for the Wallys, purely because if pumping was banned it would be impossible to police. Conversely, if unrestricted pumping was allowed, it would be a case of the fittest and strongest, and not necessarily the the smartest sailors would be at the front of the fleet. As far as I'm concerned, the main appeal of racing a Wally rather than other boards is the racing / tactics skills required to do well. Not pumping downwind is as good as impossible due to the constant trimming of the sail on waves, so pumping would have to be allowed downwind purely for practical reasons. At least we can then have a rest on the upwind legs and concentrate on wind shifts.

[WindsurferOD] DAC Summer Series and Nationals
Hi all.
It's that time of the year again.

concentrating on juniors, coaching and laid-back

Deb and I may miss the first race
(this weekend) due to jetlag (her) and flu (me) but
we'd
love to see more people down there from the first official race, the weekend
after this one.
Also, about the Nationals.
If you're planning to go and need a cheap place to crash, drop me a line and
I'll chase up
the details of the cheaper caravan hire from private owners at Salamander Bay
Village. The
alternatives are more expensive, and supply is limited. I know it's early, but it could be
good to start planning soon.
We've already got a very nice waterfront place, but
many of them have restrictive hire
conditions (ie high rents and a minimum of a week's booking)
until the Saturday night of
the nationals, when prices drop dramatically and houses are available for just a few days.
Secondly;
we were planning to have a meal and function at the SalamanderShores
motel, just behind
the club. I went up there and found
that the meals and drinks were a cut (or two) above
the norm; see
Would people like to do the function? Meal and room hire will cost $40 per
person, which
will be absorbed into the race fee of around $180. The
alternative is to just get some
pizzas into the sailing club and
just wander up the road to the Salamander's bar.
If people want to have the function, what is the best
day? At the BatemansBay nationals
we had the sit-down meal during the presentation, but
many people left early. Port
Stephens is a bit closer, but we don't want to charge for meals people won't
eat.
Would people like to have the sit-down function on the Sunday night and then a
quick informal presentation at the sailing
club, or what?
Please give me some feedback asap so
I can convert a provisional booking
at the hotel
into a firm one, or drop the idea altogether.
Finally - the pumping question. Some people would like to see more
restrictions. A few
years ago, Bill put up a questionnaire offering five choices;
1 - No pumping at all (like the Kona One now does).
2- Use the normal rules for pumping; ie one pump per wave or gust.
3- No pumping in light winds, unrestricted pumping in heavy air.
4- Current restrictions
5 - No restrictions.
Please give me some feedback if you
think we should consider changes. Last time the
feeling was overwhelmingly for the current system. One thing I would say is
that anyone
who wants more restrictive restrictions should know that they may be put onto the protest
committee to rule on them!
Finally; and this time it's the real "finally"...
I've spoken to Windsurfing NSW about
setting up a NSW Windsurfer Class Association as an
unincorporated body. These days,
incorporation isn't worth the hassle.
The idea is that there would be a
minimal fee ($20-25) that people who were not
members of other NSW Windsurfing clubs will HAVE to pay before
being allowed to do a
regatta. This is vital for insurance purposes, and we have been getting in trouble
for
letting people get away without being
members.
If anyone is keen to assist setting it up, please drop me a line.
Thanks all
Chris

Secondly; we were planning to have a meal and function at the Salamander Shores motel, just behind the club. I went up there and found that the meals and drinks were a cut (or two) above the norm; see
Would people like to do the function? Meal and room hire will cost $40 per person, which will be absorbed into the race fee of around $180. The alternative is to just get some pizzas into the sailing club and just wander up the road to the Salamander's bar.
If people want to have the function, what is the best day? At the Batemans Bay nationals we had the sit-down meal during the presentation, but many people left early. Port Stephens is a bit closer, but we don't want to charge for meals people won't eat.
Would people like to have the sit-down function on the Sunday night and then a quick informal presentation at the sailing club, or what?
Please give me some feedback asap so I can convert a provisional booking at the hotel into a firm one, or drop the idea altogether.
Finally - the pumping question. Some people would like to see more restrictions. A few years ago, Bill put up a questionnaire offering five choices;
1 - No pumping at all (like the Kona One now does).
2- Use the normal rules for pumping; ie one pump per wave or gust.
3- No pumping in light winds, unrestricted pumping in heavy air.
4- Current restrictions
5 - No restrictions.
Please give me some feedback if you think we should consider changes. Last time the feeling was overwhelmingly for the current system. One thing I would say is that anyone who wants more restrictive restrictions should know that they may be put onto the protest committee to rule on them!
Finally; and this time it's the real "finally"...
I've spoken to Windsurfing NSW about setting up a NSW Windsurfer Class Association as an unincorporated body. These days, incorporation isn't worth the hassle.
The idea is that there would be a minimal fee ($20-25) that people who were not members of other NSW Windsurfing clubs will HAVE to pay before being allowed to do a regatta. This is vital for insurance purposes, and we have been getting in trouble for letting people get away without being members.
If anyone is keen to assist setting it up, please drop me a line.

Hi all.
It's that time of the year again.
This summer, Dobroyd is having a One Design series, with racing each Saturday from 2 pm. We should get a decent little fleet, of a wide range of experience. We'll be concentrating on juniors, coaching and laid-back sailing, but we'll also have our club championship on a different day to Narrabeen fleet and the Raceboards, in the hope of attracting some visitors for some top class racing.
Deb and I may miss the first race (this weekend) due to jetlag (her) and flu (me) but we'd love to see more people down there from the first official race, the weekend after this one.
Also, about the Nationals.
If you're planning to go and need a cheap place to crash, drop me a line and I'll chase up the details of the cheaper caravan hire from private owners at Salamander Bay Village. The alternatives are more expensive, and supply is limited. I know it's early, but it could be good to start planning soon.

Here's the nationals brochure for 2009 - please send it on to anyone who could be interested.
time to think about getting your bookings in, cause this should be the biggest nationals for a few years.
Around Port Stephens, it's often expensive to get good accommodation until the Saturday night - but then prices drop dramatically and waterfront homes become affordable. Best option could be to crash out somewhere else on Friday night and move in on Saturday. Some of us have already snagged the cheap waterfronts! :-)
If you're after more budget accommodation, email me for contact details of private on-site van owners at the Salamander Bay Village, less than a minute from the beach and another 4m along the beach to the club. Or try the Anna Bay locations (on the brochure).
If you have any friends who want to come but don't have a modern One Design, tell them to grab a Classic (daggerboard, dacron sail) 'cause if we get any interest, we'll have a special division for them, to cater for the people who just want to have a fun long weekend.
We'll have Silver Fleet and the Juniors along to mix up the fun, so bring your kids and their little rigs.
With a bit of luck, we could have entries from every state, so come on and join in!
there's no such thing as a cheap root, but if you need a lift or your equipment taken up there i should be able to help.

No way. In the '80s, maybe 1/5 of all experienced windsurfers could
rail, and at least 2/3 of those who WANTED could within the same
season. The only change in the species since is the "I want it now"
and "too difficult" approach to challenges.
Whatever you do, enjoy the wind!
See, I'm not sure whether I should be impressed, inspired and motivated by those freestyle antics or be a bit realistic and see it as tragic, sad, weird, odd.Oh alright then - I'll give myself 10 more years at it and if I can't do a rail ride by then , then I'm giving up. Actually I like the shin guards in some of the clips -they could help.

Just a reminder about the racing this weekend; it's on at Port Stephens (with the dinghies) or at Marmong Point (with the other boards).
We had 16 boards and a great time at Marmong a couple of years ago.
Racing starts at noon on Saturday and 11 on Sunday.
I've got to sail at Port Stephens on one day (to get some photos for the Nationals website I'm making, chat to the guys about the nationals etc) but if there's interest in sailing at Marmong I'll head there one day.
The wind looks good on Saturday and great on Sunday!
Guys, sorry that I cannot make it to either venue as I will only be arriving back from China on the 18 July. What about the next Worlds here or Vietnam; I see images of Wallys on the Government TV channels?

There was a good piece of footage, albeit
brief, which included pair of Wallys sailing/racing as part of a promotional for
one of the Provinces. It was on CCTV the China National broadcaster which
features an English news/propaganda station hosted by our very own former ABC anchorman,
