Hi all.
It's that time of the year again.
This summer, Dobroyd is having a One Design series, with racing each Saturday
from 2
pm. We should get a decent little fleet, of a wide range of experience. We'll be
concentrating on juniors, coaching and laid-back sailing, but we'll also have
our club
championship on a different day to Narrabeen fleet and the Raceboards, in the
hope of
attracting some visitors for some top class racing.
Deb and I may miss the first race (this weekend) due to jetlag (her) and flu
(me) but we'd
love to see more people down there from the first official race, the weekend
after this one.
Also, about the Nationals.
If you're planning to go and need a cheap place to crash, drop me a line and
I'll chase up
the details of the cheaper caravan hire from private owners at Salamander Bay
Village. The
alternatives are more expensive, and supply is limited. I know it's early, but
it could be
good to start planning soon.
We've already got a very nice waterfront place, but many of them have
restrictive hire
conditions (ie high rents and a minimum of a week's booking) until the Saturday
night of
the nationals, when prices drop dramatically and houses are available for just a
few days.
Secondly;
we were planning to have a meal and function at the Salamander Shores motel,
just behind
the club. I went up there and found that the meals and drinks were a cut (or
two) above
the norm; see
http://www.salamander-shores.com/index.html
Would people like to do the function? Meal and room hire will cost $40 per
person, which
will be absorbed into the race fee of around $180. The alternative is to just
get some
pizzas into the sailing club and just wander up the road to the Salamander's
bar.
If people want to have the function, what is the best day? At the Batemans Bay
nationals
we had the sit-down meal during the presentation, but many people left early.
Port
Stephens is a bit closer, but we don't want to charge for meals people won't
eat.
Would people like to have the sit-down function on the Sunday night and then a
quick
informal presentation at the sailing club, or what?
Please give me some feedback asap so I can convert a provisional booking at the
hotel
into a firm one, or drop the idea altogether.
Finally - the pumping question. Some people would like to see more restrictions.
A few
years ago, Bill put up a questionnaire offering five choices;
1 - No pumping at all (like the Kona One now does).
2- Use the normal rules for pumping; ie one pump per wave or gust.
3- No pumping in light winds, unrestricted pumping in heavy air.
4- Current restrictions
5 - No restrictions.
Please give me some feedback if you think we should consider changes. Last time
the
feeling was overwhelmingly for the current system. One thing I would say is that
anyone
who wants more restrictive restrictions should know that they may be put onto
the protest
committee to rule on them!
Finally; and this time it's the real "finally"...
I've spoken to Windsurfing NSW about setting up a NSW Windsurfer Class
Association as an
unincorporated body. These days, incorporation isn't worth the hassle.
The idea is that there would be a minimal fee ($20-25) that people who were not
members of other NSW Windsurfing clubs will HAVE to pay before being allowed to
do a
regatta. This is vital for insurance purposes, and we have been getting in
trouble for
letting people get away without being members.
If anyone is keen to assist setting it up, please drop me a line.
Thanks all
Chris
Here's the nationals brochure for 2009 - please send it on to anyone who could be interested.
time to think about getting your bookings in, cause this should be the biggest nationals for a few years.
Around Port Stephens, it's often expensive to get good accommodation until the Saturday night - but then prices drop dramatically and waterfront homes become affordable. Best option could be to crash out somewhere else on Friday night and move in on Saturday. Some of us have already snagged the cheap waterfronts! :-)
If you're after more budget accommodation, email me for contact details of private on-site van owners at the Salamander Bay Village, less than a minute from the beach and another 4m along the beach to the club. Or try the Anna Bay locations (on the brochure).
If you have any friends who want to come but don't have a modern One Design, tell them to grab a Classic (daggerboard, dacron sail) 'cause if we get any interest, we'll have a special division for them, to cater for the people who just want to have a fun long weekend.
We'll have Silver Fleet and the Juniors along to mix up the fun, so bring your kids and their little rigs.
With a bit of luck, we could have entries from every state, so come on and join in!
there's no such thing as a cheap root, but if you need a lift or your equipment taken up there i should be able to help.

No way. In the '80s, maybe 1/5 of all experienced windsurfers could
rail, and at least 2/3 of those who WANTED could within the same
season. The only change in the species since is the "I want it now"
and "too difficult" approach to challenges.
Whatever you do, enjoy the wind!
See, I'm not sure whether I should be impressed, inspired and motivated by those freestyle antics or be a bit realistic and see it as tragic, sad, weird, odd.Oh alright then - I'll give myself 10 more years at it and if I can't do a rail ride by then , then I'm giving up. Actually I like the shin guards in some of the clips -they could help.

Just a reminder about the racing this weekend; it's on at Port Stephens (with the dinghies) or at Marmong Point (with the other boards).
We had 16 boards and a great time at Marmong a couple of years ago.
Racing starts at noon on Saturday and 11 on Sunday.
I've got to sail at Port Stephens on one day (to get some photos for the Nationals website I'm making, chat to the guys about the nationals etc) but if there's interest in sailing at Marmong I'll head there one day.
The wind looks good on Saturday and great on Sunday!
Guys, sorry that I cannot make it to either venue as I will only be arriving back from China on the 18 July. What about the next Worlds here or Vietnam; I see images of Wallys on the Government TV channels?

There was a good piece of footage, albeit
brief, which included pair of Wallys sailing/racing as part of a promotional for

Hi all.
It's all happening on 19-20 July. Marmong Point are holding the
windsurfing mid-winters. We went there a couple of years back and had
a good fleet and a great time.
However, Port Stephens Sailing and Aquatic Club (host of the
nationals) are also holding their winter regatta on the same date and
they will allow us to join in with the dinghies.
I'm going to Port Stephens to meet with the club officials, but if no
one else comes I may just race my Laser, as the locals are Laser
sailors.
Obviously it's a pity these two events are clashing, but can anyone
interested in sailing that weekend post here so that other people can
agree where to go?
PS sorry about the late info but it all got caught up in the whole
"will they/won't they" debate regarding the Raceboards coming to
Port Stephens.

Yes, the Windsurfer One Design and Junior One nationals are on at Port Stephens. There has been a slight delay in finalising and publicising the event, because the Raceboard class was going to come along and join us but have now decided to sail at Lake Illawarra.
A whole lot of people, including a lot of us who have been there before, reckon that Port Stephens is a brilliant location. I've recently checked with people who have done Wally nationals there and with dinghy sailors from the B14 and Moth classes, and everyone rates the location and the club A1.
I'll have a new set of information up in a week or so.
There are some charter or loan boards available for people who are coming from outside NSW and Victoria. Johnsy is making five new fully-rigged boards available for $200; thanks Greg. Other boards will probably be available.

On a much happier note, we have received a provisional go-ahead to hold the 2009 Nationals at Soldiers Point in Port Stephens, NSW over the Australia Day long weekend. This is a superb location; clear waters (apart from the occasional dolphin or turtle), a very experienced small-boat club (they recently ran the 90 boat Laser states), and excellent facilities. A large hotel/motel backs onto the club, and there's one caravan park (with tent sites, units, cabins and motel rooms) across the road from that, and two more close by.
Murray, it will be great to have you there and I'll PM you! We're expecting sailors from NSW, Victoria, Queensland, WA and hopefully we can get the emerging South Aussies and the Tasmanians along.
More news as it comes to hand!

Port Stephens looks great. I have ear-marked some leave to come across from Esperance for Jan09 OD series, plan to fly to Brisbane, hire camper down to Newcastle/Sydney, and fly home.......but will need to arrange a complete kit board/boom/sail etc (loan/hire) locally as well as book some accom for wife and I, etc. Can you suggest anyone to phone/email for the board? I presume event is confirmed as per your April08 email.

Very sad news
Windsurfers may not have heard that we recently lost one of Australia's greatest. Grant Long, the first Aussie to ever win a World Title, recently died after a long and brave battle with cancer. Grant was always one of the really nice guys; he always seemed happy on the beach and was great to race against. Condolences to his family, including brother Mark and nephew Owen who maintain the family connection with the sport that Grant was so brilliant at.
Good news
On a much happier note, we have received a provisional go-ahead to hold the 2009 Nationals at Soldiers Point in Port Stephens, NSW over the Australia Day long weekend. This is a superb location; clear waters (apart from the occasional dolphin or turtle), a very experienced small-boat club (they recently ran the 90 boat Laser states), and excellent facilities. A large hotel/motel backs onto the club, and there's one caravan park (with tent sites, units, cabins and motel rooms) across the road from that, and two more close by. Port Stephens is a very popular tourist area, just 20 minutes from Newcastle Airport which is serviced by Jetstar, Virgin, and Tiger jets.
The club site has links to Salamander Shores motel (just behind the club) and the van parks.
In the attached pic, the club is hidden behind Salamander Shores (in the centre of the photo, near the jetty) with the closest caravan park immediately to the lower right.

The plan is to run the Windsurfer One Design and Junior One events in conjunction with the Raceboard Oceanic titles and perhaps turn it into a bit of a longboard windsurfing festival, inviting cruising longboard sailors and SUP (stand-up paddleboard) sailors along as well. The slalom and/or freestyle will be held the day before the long weekend starts, with the course racing and remaining events over the long weekend itself.
So that's the plan......so far everyone has been pretty positive. The only real alternative since Kurnell has been ruled out (apart from anything else, the only local accomodation has just been put up for sale so its future is uncertain) is Vincentia on Jervis Bay, but it can be rougher and the accomodation is several k's away.
If anyone has big objections to Port Stephens, email me now because otherwise we'll lock it in very, very soon.
NEW BOARDS
There's be a run of new boards in June or July. Contact Windgenuity with your order.

D'oh, I forgot to mention that there's renewed interest in forming a
fleet in Lake Macquarie. If anyone knows anyone who wants to get
involved, please drop me a line.
Thanks
