windsurfing - classy. Ugg boots, a cask of wine, a packet of chips, and a
concrete slab in mid-winter. Noice!

DOBROYD WINTER SERIES
Day 3 of DAC's Winter Series is on this Sunday at 1pm. Be there or
be.....someone who isn't there.
MIDWINTERS
Marmong Point SC is hosting the NSW Midwinters on 14th and 15th July.
Last year's was a damn good regatta, with 16 entrants. There's
accommodation available at the club (well, if you're not too fussy)
and nearby, so this could be another fun regatta.
yeah windsurfing in black leather jackets and pants and studded belts could
really catch on.
"Windsurfer one design, the Harley Davidsons of the sea" They are both slow,
can't turn, old design, pulls the chicks (big time!),heavy ,difficult to
pick up after they have been dropped (still talking about the boards and
bikes not the chicks!) and apparantly very popular with the gays. The
similarities are uncanny.

hey chris,
what about tips for lonely girls (!) who need to be able to store, carry and
put their boards on their cars by themselves. Eg. the old 'levering onto
your head' technique, and tips for using pulleys to store gear on roofs of
garages etc. which are a great help. lets face it, if you can't get your
gear onto the water by yourself you're prob not going to get out very often.
also, what abut a database of contacts who may be interested in cruising,
sorted geographicaly. i have four or five people that i can call and invite
on a coast run if the mood takes me.
alsoi agree def need for tips on shore landings - vital if you find yourself
in an emergency. especially advice for landing on a surf beach by swimming
in for those who are not confident enough to sail in.
Ferry right-of-way rules and shipping lane info for harbour also a must.
Plus how to help any well-meaning boaties who may want to rescue you but
don't know how to manage a board. of course the international arm-waving
distress signal too.

How about something on self - rescue (probably comes under safety), some perhaps some general contingencies (ie knowing what is likely to break and having the spare gear to fix it - either on the water or at the beach), and a general "box of tricks" with spare parts. Understanding shore conditions, rips, currents, etc, and the risks involved with going out in open water in off-shore conditions..... Hydration is important - (I have experimented with a 2li Camelpak during summer)
I sound like a bit of a "boy scout" here but, if I'm not teaching someone & using a Wally myself, I often sail alone and make sure someone always knows where I am and what time I'm due back. (ie Have a bit of a plan where you are going and your expected time of return.)
Hope this helps.?

Oy Steve, I happen to know several women who find Windsurfer One Design sailors irresistible. There's no accounting for bad taste.
Anyway, with a simple click, all those poor biker boyz are off the list. Ahhhh, they'll be sobbing into their leathers. If any One Design sailors do have a hankering for men in leather, they'll already know where to find them (settle down at the back, there!).
On a serious note......
I'm trying to work out the syllabus (curriculum is too hard to spell) for a course on windsurfer cruising, rather than racing. We're trying to cater for people who don't want to race much, but want to feel happier and more comfortable on their Windsurfer.
So far I've covered weather, safety, how to make sailing easier, and where to sail. Can anyone give me any other ideas about what should be in the course?
Also, I'm writing a Windsurfer One Design/Junior One yearbook, to work as a promotional aid for the class. I need a fleet report from Narrabeen and Parkdale, and info etc from anyone else who wants to wield a pen.

You can "drag" yourself where you like but not on the wally page as far as I'm concerned.

LOOKING BACK;
For anyone who hasn't noticed, it's 40 years today since Jim Drake and Hoyle
Schweitzer
first launched a windsurfer.
There's a video on Youtube;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TqkMRkcGXiY
LOOKING AROUND:
Dobroyd's winter series is back on, on the first Sunday of every month. There's
normally
three short races before we retire to the shiny new clubhouse for a nice hot
shower and an
even nicer cold beer.
DAC's fleet continues to grow. Last year we had 20 sailors in the Wally fleet,
plus a few
Juniors who sailed only in Junior events, and a bunch of beginners. The last
twilight race
saw 15 Wallies competing and a few more on the water.
FORWARD:
* There's a fast-growing Wally and Junior class at Yarrawonga. Four new boards
are on
order, to join a dozen older Wallies.
* Next year in NSW we are planning interclubs in conjuction with the Raceboard
events at
Marmong Pt (Newcastle/Lake Macquarie), Illawarra (Wollongong), and DAC (Sydney)
as well
as events at Narrabeen and maybe Vaucluse and Cronulla. At the moment, the
thinking is
to have the states at DAC which has good facilities, good race management and
easy
sailing. Any input is welcome.
We are also considering running fun/learner events for the unis in conjunction
with the
Traveller's Trophy/Interclub events, because there are signs of growth in the
uni fleets.
* NSW has some new sailors coming on line. If anyone has any secondhand boards
available, please drop me a line.
See you
Chris

Hi Alistair,
If you're in Sydney call Greg Johns at Windgenuity in Dee Why on 02
9982 6444. They import Wallys from the states and keep ALL the parts.
They also ship anywhere in Australia.
Regards,
Paul Jones.
I used to have a harness that was like a vest and the hook was in the middle of
the chest. It
worked great for the OD. Does anyone know where I can get one. I still have my
OD board
and sails from 1981.

Speedy records that he did not cut Gerry

If you can get the 2x boards (I think
it was 2?) to Esperance via Perth. I'm
hoping I can get a local transport company here to collect them
from Kalgoorlie as the east west train doesn't unload in Kalgoorlie
but continues on to Perth and only unloads freight cargo when returning
there heading east! Sadliers Transport manages the Kalgoorlie depot (they have a link
with east states group called Country Carriers). It's a 4hr
road trip to Esperance from Kalgoorlie
as part of the deal.
My guess is you remove skegs
& bubblewrap/tape the boards and tape the skegs to the
body for transit? There is a lot of packing and then handling
involved and of course a good chance that people will not respect the Wallys
and still drop them and split the skin. I have one which fell off a cradle
12mths ago and split the skin near the skeg in a couple of places. I haven't
even tried to get any plastic welding done as it's so expensive. Boards in
Perth can be
between $20-100 depending on condition.
I have spoken to the Mgr of Sadliers
Transport, Perth (Paul FLEETON) - (08)
90211 377 and he suggested I ring the Sydney
operator of Sadliers/Country Carriers (?)Terry HAYLES - (02) 975 02500
and give him actual pickup and drop-off addresses and get a quote. Paul wasn't
sure whether they would even agree to take the boards as most of
their loads are on wrap-sealed pallets. I suspect the boards may just
be placed (thrown!) on top of the pallets or wedged between
them. eeehhhhh!
Contact Terry HAYLES either via phone
above or email - thayles@sadliers.com.au with
your proposed pick-up address details.
Delivery would be to either Esperance
Police Station, 100 Dempster St,
Esperance W.A. 6450 or
to the local transport carrier depot and I would collect.
Let me know how you get on (total quote),
and if it's not too expensive, I will most likely take the chance
and go ahead.

Parkdale Report 11th Feb 2007
==============================
Narrabeen, Esperance, Hobart... meanwhile at Parkdale, only 2 weeks
after the Nationals, the Victorian fleet had had enough of gale force
winds and Sun racing, 11/2/07, was cancelled. This left only some Melb
Uni windsurfers sheltering from the sandstorms as Jonno blasted across
the Bay with a retro handkerchief for a sail. So no race results to
report.
(See photos - even the mighty Tim can be seen, wisely escaping, in the
background - ['over the border' album.])
Next racing: Sun 18/2 1.00pm start
Happy Valentine's Day to everyone for tomorrow!
