The 08/09 season looks like a great time for the Windsurfer One
Design class, with a whole bunch of new hot new sailors chock-full of
enthusiasm.
The latest surge came after the 2008 Olympians went to Hamilton
Island and Dennis Winstanley turned some of them into onto Wallies.
They've got their friends into the act, and now the One Design fleet
includes people like Jessica Crisp (multiple world champion in
Windsurfers and the Professional Windsurfing Association, multiple
Olympian), Krystal Weir (world women's Laser champion and 2008
Olympian), Laura Baldwin (#2 in the women's Laser worlds), Nic
Douglass (ex world Tasar dinghy champion) and others.
Jessica and Krystal in particular are really keen to promote the
sport, with Jess aiming to get Yachting Australia involved (there's
been a change of mind in influential quarters since they turned down
the Junior One/Windsurfer One Design proposal a while back) and
Krystal promoting the Wally as a perfect cross-trainer. She's having
a great time and reckons we've all been keeping it a secret!
The next nationals really is looking big; a fleet of 50+ is starting
to look conservative. There should be half a dozen (or more) ex-
Olympians at the nationals, but the emphasis is going even more on
having fun..... that livewire Jess is already working out how to get
an association BBQ to all events! The plan is to keep working on
getting kids, especially the kids of the '80s windsurfing generation,
into the sport and to making sure that the whole fleet has fun, from
Olympians to cruisers.
Speaking of which.... now we have an association once more. Many
thanks to all who came and supported the formation on Sunday
afternoon, after Jess gave us a sailing lesson!
The constitution is pretty much the same as the draft we presented
earlier. The idea is to put the power pretty much in the hands of
those running the fleets, and give the average member a strong say.
Standard membership will be $40, which will give third-party
insurance. Juniors and those adult who sail only in one fleet or do
one event can get a special membership of $20, which is pretty much
just covering their insurance. Those who are already holders of
Australian Windsurfing Association insurance pay just $20 for
membership.
