See, the problem I've got is that;
I pay taxes to the government and a (small) portion of it goes to funding their scientific departments and they then provide important information back togovernment departments and (occassionally) to the public and I've just read the Gippsland Lakes algae bloom webpage issued by the state govenment and it recommends no contact with the water and warns of possible health problems upon exposure to it. Now I know that it shows a lack of skill on my behalf but if I windsurf in Gippsland lakes I know I will come in contact with the water. (For those unlucky enough to have witnessed my windsurfing prowess they'll know that I'll probably spend a considerable time in contact with the water.)
I LOVE my windsurfing racing and have been eagerly looking forward to driving (a friggin' long way)/camping/ windsurfing/racing/swimming /fishing/ funboarding/ socialising with friends/windsurfing/ doing a few other interesting things/ and windsurfing and have cancelled work and various things for it.
But, if I got crook from the water I'd ;
a) feel stupid for ignoring the warnings (knowing that my exposure will be for several days) and
b) feel crap because I was crook.(full body itch is something I've experienced before and it could never be compensated by anything including the joy of windsurfing etc.
SO... I might have to give the nationals a miss as it would never be worth it for me to get crook.
Bummer.But windsurfing is a bit different to boating as one does end up in the water to various degrees whilst windsurfing.
I might get a bit pissed off in that I've got to make a choice between saying the Governmant funded scientists are just talking crap and risking my health or doing something I've been looking forward to for a year.
As you know, I would windsurf practically anywhere inluding Stink Point (often referred to as Rodd Point). Oddly enough it's offical status is the reverse of Gippsland Lakes', ie. not safe for fish, but safe for humans (sort of). They say the algae bloom doesn't affect the fish etc but does affect people.

Hi Windsurfers,
It's all looking good for the nationals! There's more info in the files
section. Also one of the Victorians has just let me know he has room/s
available in a Paynesville holiday house. Please contact me if you're
interested and I'll pass on the details.
Happy sailing, Kerry.
