This is an interesting topic as there are a few stories like this in state
college. There's betsy aardsma, there is gricar and there was a student
murdered in a Allen street apartment in the late 80's that was never solved. I
believe there was an Asian coed who was found dead about 10 years ago and I
don't remember if it was ever solved.

The man responsible for white-outs at Beaver Stadium is no longer employed at
Penn State.

Effective immediately, Guido D'Elia, the marketing manager for Nittany Lion
football, is not working with the athletic department, the university confirmed
today.

"They decided to go in a different direction," D'Elia said this morning.

Athletics spokesman Jeff Nelson said he could not speak about any circumstances
surrounding D'Elia's dismissal.

"As with any personnel matter, Intercollegiate Athletics does not disclose
information leading to an employee's departure," Nelson said.

Three part-time members of D'Elia's marketing staff were also relieved of their
positions last week, Nelson said.

Penn State is also breaking ties with Mind Over Media, the higher education
agency that produced the weekly highlight program, The Penn State Football
Story, for more than 25 years and had also helped market the Penn State
basketball program. D'Elia is a founding member of the group.

D'Elia had been hired by Penn State as director of communications and branding
in 2004. He orchestrated the music and video during Penn State football games
and organized special events such as white-outs, where students or the entire
fan base wore white to games. He also worked with the Paterno family to plan the
public memorial service for former head coach Joe Paterno at the Bryce Jordan
Center last month.

Under D'Elia's watch, Sports Illustrated dubbed Penn State "The Greatest Show in
College Football," a moniker used frequently by the school in the years to
follow.

By LaVar Arrington

It's a leap year and people have been discussing the best leaps of all
time, so I figured I might answer one of questions I am asked the
most: What was I thinking in 1998 when I jumped over the line of
scrimmage to make a tackle?

Let me set the stage. Penn State was playing the Fighting Illini of
Illinois that day. It was the third quarter, we were in the lead and
Illinois was mounting its best drive of the game. It was a very
critical drive if they were to have any hopes of trying to come back.

It was fourth down and inches and Illinois had its best field position
of the game. This is a Big Ten matchup — they weren't going to kick
the ball, they were going to knuckle up and try and make a point by
punching us in the mouth to get a first down.

Now that you have the background information, here's what I was saying
to myself before the play:

"Okay, Var, it's fourth down and inches. The ball is on the hashmarks
to our sideline, they haven't been able to throw the ball all game.
Their best bet is to QB sneak it! Dang, Var, you been killing these
dudes all game! Okay, refocus, this is a big play. We can ice the game
if we stop them. Here they come. Alright the linemen ran up to the
line pumped up, they are going to fire off that ball. Okay, okay, it's
definitely a QB keeper! They are going to try for the opposite A gap,
it's the only space to run, that means they are going to try and chop
block me. They won't long count, we may adjust, it's first sound, Var,
do it! You know what's going to happen, go!"

I crept up toward the line to show I was blitzing so that the lineman
confirmed he needed to chop me down. As the ball was snapped, I had
taken enough power steps to launch myself into the opposite A gap.

I was right about all but one thing: I figured the safest move for
Illinois was to keep the ball in the quarterback's hands, but they
didn't. They handed the ball off to their big, bruising fullback,
Elmer Hickman. Thank goodness I chose the gap and not the player. I
hit that A gap and collided with Hickman to make the stop on the play.

The end result was that we stopped them and I became forever known as
the man who executed the “LaVar Leap.” Many thought it was just pure
athleticism, but really there was a lot of thought that went into
taking a chance like that on a very important down.

We were always challenged to know enough about our opponents to be
able to adjust accordingly to what they were giving us. That's what I
did — it just happened to be in a way that no one had seen before.

That’s my Leap story for the leap year.

Subject: Penn State Prez Says In "Hindsight," School Should Have Moved Quicker On Sandusky Scandal.

school-should-have-moved-quicker-on-sandusky-scandal.html>

In “hindsight” top officials at the Pennsylvania State University
should have been more aware of the PENN STATEactivities of former
football coach Jerry Sandusky and moved more proactively to stop them,
university President Rodney Erickson told a state Senate panel
Wednesday.

“It was clear that there were signs there,” with Sandusky, who has
been charged with more than 50 counts of child sexual abuse, “that
should have been followed up that weren’t,” Erickson said during a
hearing on the land-grant school’s annual budget request.

"From everything that I have been able to learn from the board, the
information that had been conveyed to them was that it was a former
employee who had been gone for 12 years,” Erickson said of Sandusky,
the Nittany Lions’ famed former defensive coordinator, who left Penn
State in 1999.

“There were no indications that anyone at the university had been the
target of charges. Looking back, it’s seemingly easier to see that,”
he said.

In an interview after his 90-minute appearance before the Senate
Appropriations Committee, Erickson underlined that position and said
the university’s Board of Trustees is taking steps to streamline its
operations.
“As I said hindsight is usually quite clear,” he said. “Knowing what
we do now, yes. But certainly that information wasn’t available at the
time the [state grand jury] presentment was released and the board saw
it for the first time. “

The changes to the board will allow it to be “much more aggressive in
being able to respond,” to potential problems, he also told lawmakers.

“As president, that’s a good move in the ways it will open up the
lines of communication,” he said.

The appearance marked the second time in a week that Erickson, who
succeeded former President Graham B. Spanier last year, appeared
before lawmakers to ask them not to cut the school’s now- $227 million
appropriation.

Three of the four so-called “state-related” universities: Penn State
and Temple universities and the University of Pittsburgh, come in for
a proposed 30 percent reduction in Gov. Tom Corbett’s $27.14 billion
budget for the fiscal year that starts July 1. Lincoln University, the
fourth and smallest of the schools, would be flat-funded.

As he did before a state House panel last week, Erickson warned that
two years in a row of reductions in taxpayer support jeopardized both
the lower-cost tuition offered to state residents and the operation of
19 satellite campuses across the state – including one in the Lehigh
Valley.

The second year of cuts has prompted speculation that the Corbett
administration might be trying to wean the universities off taxpayer
support and usher them down the road to become private institutions.
Administration officials have steadfastly denied that is the case.

“We will do our best to keep tuition as low as possible to keep alive
the dream of a Penn State education for the sons and daughters of
Pennsylvania’s working families,” Erickson told lawmakers, even as he
asked them, “Will we meet that challenge together or will we be forced
to do it alone.”

Appropriations Committee Chairman Jake Corman, R-Centre, whose
district includes Penn State, has said he opposed the administration’s
proposed cuts for the state-related schools, the 14 state-owned
universities and community colleges and wanted to find a way to
restore some of that money.

Corman reiterated that position to Erickson on Wednesday.

This kid's motion is reminiscent of Dan Marino's.

I was going to get back to you Rob. I was watching the men's BB game. I

$575K for an 82-year-old house on a quarter acre with a one-car garage???

Must be the trophy landscaping.

Good luck. It's a location thing I guess. A refurbished house that size
down here is probably $150K. I'd have to ask Wife... she sold real estate
while she was attending college in Texas.

When I heard he'd bought this house I just assumed half a million bucks plus
would get you a palatial estate in Centre County. Apparently not!

What challenging circumstances do you imagine we'll have next February that will
be at all comparable to the massive headwinds we faced with regards to the Class
of 2012?
