The future's so bright, I gotta wear shades...

Penn State's recent hires

Women's Basketball: Coquese Washington's team will be ranked in the Top Ten in
tomorrow's polls.

Men's Lacrosse: Jeff Tambroni delivered the biggest victory in school history
today.

Wrestling: Cael Sanderson won Penn State's first National Championship in more
than half a century last year and is favored to repeat. (And will likely be
favored to three-peat next season.)

How can a Penn State fan not feel good about Pat Chambers and (especially) Bill
O'Brien?

I forgot to mention winning the Big Ten regular season title.

I didn't know about Coach O'Brien's mother...

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP)--Maggie Lucas scored 24 points and No. 11 Penn State
smothered cold-shooting Minnesota to claim sole possession of the Big Ten title
with a 74-51 rout Sunday.

Penn State has won a season-high seven straight, including the last five by
double digits.

Washington said the team would get motivation from the roughly 500 breast cancer
survivors and about 13,000 other fans in the stands wearing pink for the annual
"Pink Zone" game to raise money for breast cancer causes.

New football coach Bill O'Brien was sitting the courtside, too, wearing a pink
shirt as he voiced his support for a charity that hit home--O'Brien told the
crowd his 80-year-old mother is a two-time breast cancer survivor.

On the court, Penn State's 13 conference wins matched the program's highest
total since 2004-5.

Maggie looks like a much different player this year. She looks like a kid
who had it in her but needed to be prodded to take the risks associated
with creating off the dribble. They should make a deep run.

Interesting article on StateCollege.com...

Tom Lemming: "As I travel the country, Penn State's name is popping up
everywhere, more than it did in the past.

"Bill O'Brien seems to be spreading his recruiting all over the country, which
is a good sign. I think it's a refreshing change that Penn State is now more
open and friendlier and not living in a vacuum like it did before. I think that
will translate into landing more nationally known recruits."

Lemming on our top QB targets, Ryan Burns and Christian Hackenberg, both from
Virginia: "I visited with both of those guys recently--they are among two of the
best quarterbacks in the country. Both appear to be leaning toward committing to
Penn State.

"They were impressed with what Coach O'Brien said about the quarterback
position, how he trains them and how they would fit into his system.

"I don't think Penn State will be hurting at quarterback after this year."

By Chris Papst
For Journal Register News Service

A few weeks ago, Jerry Sandusky appeared in a Bellefonte courtroom for
a pretrial hearing. Five motions were presented to the court
concerning bail, jury selection and the release of documents to the
defense. As Sandusky sat in his chair listening to the proceedings, I
sat directly behind him. Here's what I observed.

First, the former Penn State assistant coach's demeanor did not match
the seriousness of the moment; specifically when it came to the
motions concerning his jury.

The prosecution requested the jury be selected from outside Centre
County. The state argued that it would create a fairer trial since
many people in Centre County are connected to Penn State or The Second
Mile (the non-profit Sandusky founded to help disadvantaged youth.
This is also where he was accused of meeting his alleged victims). The
defense, however, wanted a jury from inside Centre County, where the
alleged crimes were committed. After both sides argued their
positions, the judge called Sandusky to testify. Under oath, the judge
asked him a series of questions, during which the 67-year-old appeared
to be giggling.

I understand the man has been under tremendous stress, especially if
he is not guilty. But there was a serious disconnect between his
behavior and the situation. With his age and the scope of the charges
against him, this jury will decide if he dies in jail. I don't know
Jerry Sandusky, but maybe his conduct was part of his personality.
Maybe he was filled with nervous energy and a light laughter was his
release. Whatever the reason, his actions were weird.

The second thing I noticed was the prosecution did not seem well
prepared. One lawyer to whom I spoke after the hearing told me the
state appeared “weak”. And I would have to agree. Their arguments were
lacking and the motions they brought forth were quickly dismissed by
the judge.

For example, the state requested that Sandusky's bail be changed so
that he would not be permitted to leave his home. He is currently on
house arrest, which means he is allowed on any structure, such as a
deck or patio that is connected to his primary dwelling. The state
argued that some neighbors were complaining about him being outside.
To further their point, they provided a video shot by one of
Sandusky's neighbors where the defendant was on his porch petting his
dog. The judge asked what Sandusky was doing wrong to constitute a
change in bail. The prosecution had no answer. And there was no
answer. The man was simply on his porch petting his dog, which he is
allowed to do under the conditions of his bail. The state had nothing.

The judge, at times, even appeared to politely ridicule the
prosecution. At one point, the state argued for why the jury should
come from outside Center County. They stated that Centre County would
afford Sandusky a fair trial, but a jury from outside the county might
be better. The judge seemed confused. He asked why an outside jury is
needed when the state admits one from inside the county would be fair.
The prosecution's lack of a response looked bad.

Meanwhile Sandusky's attorney, Joe Amendola, seemed calm and relaxed.
He made strong arguments and easily dismantled all the prosecution's
efforts.

As a result, the defense won almost every motion – a likely outcome
for anyone watching.

The judge said he would like to see the trail, where Sandusky faces 52
counts of child sexual abuse, start by mid-May. The experts I talk to
think that's a bit ambitious. But when this trial does begin, it's
bound to be fascinating.

In the first of what could be a few similar moves, the Bears informed Anthony
Adams on Sunday that he will be released.

It's not surprising when you consider the defensive tackle saw his playing time
fade in 2011. The Bears considered him a necessary part of the front at this
time a year ago and he was eventually signed to a $4.5 million, two-year
contract after the lockout ended.

But Adams played in 11 games and started only four as he got the fewest reps
among defensive tackles in the regular rotation, being passed up by rookie
Stephen Paea and veteran Matt Toeaina a year after Adams started all 16 games.

A value buy in free agency for the Bears in 2007, Adams was one of the most
popular players in the locker room. The 31-year-old was due to earn a base
salary of $1.9 million in 2012.

I'm going to state without fear of contradiction that Syracuse has never been
prohibited from practicing at the Carmelo Anthony Center next to Manley
Fieldhouse.

FWIW, Syracuse holds just one practice per year in the Carrier Dome. This
season's Midnight Madness season-opening practice was sold out and broadcast on
ESPNU.

Excerpt from the article:

[For two consecutive weeks] the team practiced not on the main arena floor of
the BJC, or in the South Gym--the practice facility in the BJC for both the
men's and women's teams--but instead, across the street at Penn State's
Intramural Building in what until a month ago had been exclusively a volleyball

I don't recall seeing this article before. Here's hoping the Feds or the Fourth
Estate gets to the bottom of this. There's little doubt in my mind that Corbett
is one of the bad guys in this drama.

I especially loved "Blame the board, but not the governor, because they knew
when it was reported in March," as if Corbett was not a board member last March.

Corbett seems to place fast and loose with regards to the question of
confidentiality. He claims to have hinted at confidential information to the
Board of Traitors, but hides behind it when it suits his political agenda.

Story by Stacy Brown
Statehouse News Online
November 22, 2011

HARRISBURG--Gov. Tom Corbett said the Penn State University Board of Trustees
could have taken action against former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky.

"It's the responsibility of the Board of Trustees, from their perspective, to
determine what they were told, when they were told, why they were told, who told
them, who knew what," Corbett said during his speech at the Pennsylvania Press
Club luncheon Monday here.

"It's their responsibility, the fiduciary responsibility to deal with Penn
State," Corbett said.

Corbett said he told unidentified university officials in March about the story
in Harrisburg Patriot News about a grand jury investigation into Sandusky.

"This is an interesting story. Is anybody looking at this?" Corbett said he told
the board.

"Blame the board, but not the governor, because they knew when it was reported
in March," said Kevin Harley, Corbett's spokesman.

Corbett was the state's attorney general when a grand jury convened an
investigation in 2009 about child sex abuse allegations against Sandusky.
Corbett led the investigation until he became governor in January, he said.

Mostly, trustees have been silent on the issue since Sanduskys arrest earlier
this month on charges of sexual assault against a minor. A grand jury report
detailed eight separate incidents in which the former football coach is accused
of abusing boys as young as 8 years old between 1996 and 2005.

"There has to be transparency. We should have had earlier knowledge of this,"
Penn State Trustee Keith Eckel said in an interview with Pennsylvania
Independent this week.

Eckel, a Lackawanna County resident, had given interviews to local media only
and, after a brief conversation with the PA Independent, said he wasn't talking
to them any longer and referred further questions to board chairman John Surma,
who didn’t return calls for comment this week and last week.

A trustee for 11 years, Eckel told The Scranton Times Tribune that he heard of
"writings" in the Patriot-News about Sandusky.

"I absolutely believe that we should have had earlier knowledge of this," Eckel
said in the newspaper Nov. 18 report.

Messages left by Pennsylvania Independent were not returned by trustees David
Joyner, Paul Suhey, Keith Masser, Carl Shaffer, Jesse Arnelle, Marianne
Alexander, Joel Myers and Surma.

The board consists of 48 members, including ex-officio member Corbett. Trustees
mostly live in Pennsylvania, but Arnelle resides in San Francisco.

Whether Corbett should have told the board to bar Sandusky from his Penn State
campus office is in dispute, but his decision may have helped minimize the
university's liability in any civil lawsuits filed by the victims, said John
Capowski, law professor at Widener University School of Law here.

"Think about it," Capowski said. "If Corbett told (the trustees) and they did
nothing and something else happened with Sandusky--another child was hurt--there
are more serious liability issues."

Informing the trustees "would have revealed what we were doing in the grand jury
investigation," Corbett said. "We had to be very careful not to tip where this
investigation was going."

------

Just picked this up as well.

Fight On State is
reporting<https://twitter.com/#!/FightOnState/status/174268477207625728>
that
Guido D'Elia, the man in charge of Football Communications and
Branding<http://www.gopsusports.com/administration/staff-directory.html>
at
Penn State, was "let go" from his position
today<https://twitter.com/#!/FightOnState/status/174270903314685952>.
Additionally, the company that Penn State used for its Penn State Football
Story productions, which is co-owned by D'Elia, Mind Over
Media<http://www.momknows.com/people.php>,
will no longer be working with the University.

D'Elia has been a lightning rod for debate, as the environment surrounding
Penn State football home games seemed to become more and more canned and
forced at times. D'Elia recently brought themed games to Penn State,
including "Favorite Jersey Day", "Wear Tie Die", and others that seemed to
rub some people the wrong way. D'Elia has also caught heat for his use of
"piped in" music rather than relying on the musical stylings of Penn
State's Blue Band during game breaks.
Who will replace D'Elia, and who will handle some of the football
productions, is still up in the air, as are some of the questions
surrounding D'Elia's departure (forced out? greener pastures?). We'll bring
you more as we learn.

Subject: Calls build to rename Park Ave. for Paterno

ml>

Park Avenue could get a new name, thanks to support from thousands of
people across the country.

Close to 7,000 people signed a petition during the past month
supporting the change of Park to Paterno Way, in honor of the late
Penn State football coach Joe Paterno.

State College and College Township staffs have received the petition,
which calls for renaming the section of Park between North Atherton
Street and U.S. Route 322, and the issue will appear on coming council
agendas for discussion. The road travels through both municipalities
and Penn State’s campus.

Park Avenue is also known as state Route 3007, and state Department of
Transportation spokeswoman Marla Fannin said the renaming of a state
road usually is driven by legislation. If that happens, PennDOT would
create and place new signs.

Tony Ricciardi, program director and radio personality at 93.7 The
Bus, and a 2001 Penn State graduate, posted the petition online the
day after Paterno died from lung cancer. He said he and Jerry Valeri,
of radio station Majic 99, first toyed with the idea in October, while
wondering how Penn State would honor the coach once he retired.

They dropped the discussion in November, when former football
assistant coach Jerry Sandusky was arrested on child sex abuse
charges, and Paterno was removed from his head coach position.

When Paterno died, Ricciardi wondered if Penn State would name
something for him.

“I got the capability on the website to whip up a Web form real quick,” he said.

On Jan. 23, he posted the petition. He sent the link out to a few
people on Facebook and, the next day, it had 1,000 signatures.

“We only mentioned it on the air, collectively, four or five times,”
he said. “But it kind of took on a life of its own on Facebook.”

Ricciardi said he chose Park Avenue because it travels through
communities and campus, past the stadium and McKee Street, where
Paterno’s family lives, the faith center named for Sue Paterno, and
Mount Nittany Medical Center, where Joe Paterno died.

“At least on Park it’s shared by everybody,” Ricciardi said. “That
kind of brings everything together.”

The borough has a naming policy, which requires 50 resident
signatures; Ricciardi’s petition had 130 borough signatures out of the
7,000 total. Next, Borough Council will consider and hold a public
hearing on the proposed name change.

The issue is not yet on a council agenda, but will appear next month or April.

Ricciardi will formally present the petition to Township Council
during its Thursday night meeting, and the township likely will await
the borough’s decision on the matter, according to Manager Adam
Brumbaugh.

College Township doesn’t have a policy for renaming streets.

“My recommendation to council is basically to wait, because of the
fact that Park Avenue is in two municipalities,” Brumbaugh said. “We
have to come to an agreement. I think it would be very difficult for
one municipality, and not the other, to be involved in renaming their
section of Park Avenue.”

Penn State spokeswoman Lisa Powers said the university doesn’t have
any jurisdiction over the road, so Penn State has no position on the
suggestion.

“As we have said, there have been a number of proposed ideas and the
board of trustees will take these into consideration, as well as seek
input from a wide array of university constituencies with coach
Paterno’s family and others, on how his legacy will be acknowledged,”
she said.

I certainly hope you are right. My fear that you're not is based on the Board of
Traitors hiring of Lanny Davis. Nobody hires Lanny Davis because they want to
tell the truth, they hire him to lie, delay, and obfuscate.

I'm extremely skeptical that a group which hires Lanny Davis would be interested
in a full and fair investigation by Louis Freeh.

>> [Freeh's] investigation will be largely subject to attorney-client privilege.
<<

If they hide behind confidentiality and Freeh's full final report is not made
public or is heavily redacted, then it's a sham.

Tom Corbett says various things, then hides behind confidentiality when it suits
him.

Cynthia Baldwin laughably claims she was at the Grand Jury hearing to represent
Penn State's interests and wasn't representing Curley and/or Schultz. But she
apparently never notified anyone on the Board of Traitors because of
confidentiality.

Ken, I hope you're right about Freeh. However, given the track record of the
Board of Trustees I'll be shocked if they allow him to release a report that
exposes any of their dirty laundry.

Which brings up another question. Does Freeh release his report independently or
does he give it to the Board of Traitors and allow them to make the final call
as to what portions of his report (if any) are made public?

"Penn State's Board of Trustees announced today that it received the report of
an independent investigation by Louis Freeh into Penn State's role in the Jerry
Sandusky child abuse scandal. The report found no wrong-doing on the part of the
Penn State administration or Board of Trustees, but suggested ways of
strengthening Penn State's internal processes. The Board of Trustees takes these
suggestions very seriously and has formed a committee to formulate new
guidelines. The Freeh report will not be made public because of laws protecting
attorney-client privilege."

Quarterback Christian Hackenberg of Fork Union, Va., currently is USC's top
quarterback target and has set an unofficial visit to Columbia for March 15-16.

Hackenberg has been in touch with USC quarterbacks coach GA Mangus thru
Facebook, and has talked to him on the phone. "From what he's been telling me,
I'm the only one he's offered," Hackenberg said. "He feels I can fit in with
their offense and do what they want me to do."

Hackenberg recently visited Penn State for a closeup look at Bill O'Brien and
his new program in Happy Valley. "I liked the way coach O'Brien set everything
up, and he's got the program headed in the right direction," Hackenberg said.

He is going to Miami this weekend. Hackenberg also has offers from Tennessee,
Rutgers, Virginia, Alabama, Connecticut, South Florida and Florida. There is no
favorite, and he plans to make his decision this summer.

---------
That's an opinion I disagree with. I think there IS a favorite, and PSU
is it.

Central Bucks East sophomore defenseman/LSM Tyler Butler has made a verbal
commitment to play Division I lacrosse at The Pennsylvania State University.

Club Affiliations: Duke's Lacrosse Club, Mesa Fresh 2014

Major Lacrosse Honors: 2011 Inside Lacrosse Top Gun Sophomore Watch List #15 (#2
Defenseman), 2011 Baltimore Summer Kick Off All-Star, 2011 Big 4 Lacrosse
All-Star, 2011 Philly Showcase All-Star, Gait Fab 40 selection, 2011 Suburban
One Champions, 2011 District 1 Finalist, 2011 PIAA Semi Finalist. 2011 Dick's
Tournament of Champions winner. Played Varsity Lacrosse and Varsity Football as
a Freshman.

Academic Honors: National Honor Society, High Honors, Patriot Award and Life
Scout working on Eagle Rank and Order of the Arrow (Scouting's Honor Society)

College Major: "I have a few ideas but at this time I am undecided."

Why I choose to be a Nittany Lion: "I really felt at home at Penn State! It has
everything I am looking for in a University; academics, size, location and a
competitive lacrosse program. Coach (Jeff) Tambroni is an outstanding coach and
I am looking forward to contributing to the program he is building and being a
part of the Nittany Lions Lacrosse Family."

2012 High School Team outlook: "I am really excited for CB East Lacrosse this
year. Last year's seniors took our program to such a high point that I think
this year's crew can take us over the edge to the next level. Being lead by a
great group of coaches and seniors, and having plenty of talent across the
board, I have high hopes for this year and can't wait to start."

Recruiting Process: "I didn't expect the recruiting process to happen as early
as it did. I made a list of what I was interested in and identified the schools
so when the opportunity came to contact them it made the process more
manageable."

Other schools considered: Maryland, Notre Dame, The Ohio State University,
Harvard, Princeton.

Other Comments: "I just want to thank everyone that has had an impact on my
lacrosse development. First, I would like to thank my parents for providing me
with constant support and inspiration in my athletics and academics. I wouldn't
have been able to get this far without my parents' dedication and my dad's
constant push to achieve the best I could. I would like to thank my sister for
getting me into lacrosse and helping me stick with it.

"I would like to thank Duke's Lacrosse Club Coaches Ebe Helm, Jason Christmas,
Chris Fallon, Mike Mackrides and the rest of the Duke's coaching staff for their
coaching and guidance. I would like to thank my High School Coaches, Bruce
Garcia and Paul McGovern, my Central Bucks Athletics Coaches Steve Hogan, Brian
Zappala and Brad Ament (who coached me since the 4th grade) and my Penn Star and
Mesa Fresh Coaches Pat Carney and Peter Scott for their coaching and continued
support."

My understanding is that CBS and Turner (TBS, TNT, and truTV) will broadcast all
the games free again.

I believe you are referring to computer/phone availability. Not free, but only
$3.99 for all 67 games...

Penn State dismissed Shawn Oakman from the football team for a
violation of team rules, the school announced in an e-mail Tuesday
night. No further details were given.

Oakman, a 6-foot-9, 270-pound defensive end from Penn Wood High
School, redshirted his freshman year.

Attempts to reach Oakman were unsuccessful.

Oakman’s high school coach, Sam Mormando, declined to comment when
reached by phone.

Oakman was a four-star football recruit out of Penn Wood, according to
Rivals.com, with offers from Pittsburgh, South Carolina, Temple,
Connecticut, North Carolina State, and Penn State.

Sophomore defensive back Mike Wallace wrote in a text: “I’m sorry but
that is family business.”

A Penn State alumni group angered by the university’s Board of
Trustees actions in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky scandal has created
a task force to review the trustees’ decisions.

Penn Staters for Responsible Stewardship said its Legal and Regulatory
task force will research what it feels are legal issues surrounding
the trustees’ work, and recommend changes in the board’s structure.
The task force will be lead by Anthony Misitano and Robert Tribeck, a
Harrisburg attorney.

In a statement, the group said it does not believe the internal
investigation former FBI director Louis Freeh is conducting for Penn
State can be independent because trustees sit on the committee
overseeing Freeh.

Among other things, the task force will review Freeh’s report when it
is issued, likely in the fall.

Penn Staters for Responsible Stewardship is one of several groups that
are endorsing candidates for this spring’s alumni trustee election.
The university will hold a drawing for the order of that ballot
Wednesday.
