Surprisingly, this is NOT from The Onion and sadly it contains Penn State
content...

Story by John Bingham
The Telegraph UK
April 28, 2011

Animal lovers should stop calling their furry or feathered friends "pets"
because the term is insulting, leading academics claim.

Domestic dogs, cats, hamsters or budgerigars should be rebranded as "companion
animals" while owners should be known as "human carers", they insist.

Even terms such as wildlife are dismissed as insulting to the animals
concerned--who should instead be known as "free-living", the academics
including an Oxford professor suggest.

The call comes from the editors of then Journal of Animal Ethics, a new academic
publication devoted to the issue.

It is edited by the Revd Professor Andrew Linzey, a theologian and director of
the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics, who once received an honorary degree from
the Archbishop of Canterbury for his work promoting the rights of "God's
sentient creatures".

In its first editorial, the journal--jointly published by Prof Linzey's centre
and the University of Illinois in the US--condemns the use of terms such as
"critters" and "beasts".

It argues that "derogatory" language about animals can affect the way that they
are treated.

"Despite its prevalence, 'pets' is surely a derogatory term both of the animals
concerned and their human carers," the editorial claims.

"Again the word 'owners', whilst technically correct in law, harks back to a
previous age when animals were regarded as just that: property, machines or
things to use without moral constraint."

It goes on: "We invite authors to use the words 'free-living', 'free-ranging’
or 'free-roaming' rather than 'wild animals.'

For most, 'wildness' is synonymous with uncivilised, unrestrained, barbarous
existence.

"There is an obvious prejudgment here that should be avoided."

Prof Linzey and his co-editor Professor Priscilla Cohn, of Penn State University
in the US, also hope to see some of the more colourful terms in the English
language stamped out.

Phrases such as "sly as a fox", "eat like a pig" or "drunk as a skunk" are all
unfair to animals, they claim.

"We shall not be able to think clearly unless we discipline ourselves to use
less than partial adjectives in our exploration of animals and our moral
relations with them," they say.

Linebacker Dorian Bell was suspended for the 2011 season because of a violation
of team rules, Ohio State coach Jim Tressel confirmed to The Dispatch yesterday.

Tressel did not offer specifics. But sources said it's believed to be because of
a third breach of the athletic department's drug and alcohol abuse policy.

Bell, a third-year sophomore from Monroeville, Pa., did not play in the Sugar
Bowl in January for undisclosed reasons. That makes it likely that Bell is a
repeat offender and drew a stiffer penalty for this violation.

Bell, 6-feet-1 and 225 pounds, appeared in eight games last season when he
wasn't nicked up, and at times was on the second team, backing up Ross Homan. He
made nine tackles, including half a sack, and also forced a fumble.

Bell had established himself in the two-deep at linebacker in the spring and was
in the running for the possible starting job at the strong-side spot. At the end
of spring drills nine days ago, several Ohio State defenders said Bell finally
was playing up to his promise.

Other players who now could step up in that role include Storm Klein, Jordan
Whiting or incoming freshman Curtis Grant, who was rated the No.2 overall
prospect in the nation by Rivals.com.

Bell was a highly touted recruit. Rivals.com rated him a five-star prospect in
the class of 2009, and he was ranked the third-best outside linebacker
nationally and the No.33 overall prospect. He redshirted his freshman year
because of personal issues.

The funding from the state has been flat for about the past twelve years,
meanwhile enrollment has increased by close to 10,000. The other big driver
has been insurance costs, which of course have been rising faster than
inflation. As a university more of Penn State's budget is tied up in
personnel than a normal business like a factory that buys raw materials.
Building construction has not really been that big of a factor because of
the way it's funded (don't ask me to open that can of worms, please.) The
final problem, I think is that a lot of Penn State's revenue is restricted,
so we can't transfer it around to respond to bad economic conditions like a
normal place could. For example we can't take a research grant and say,
"gee the budget is tight, let's use this to teach English."

Aren't the tuition increases also due to the lack of funding received
from the state every year. Less funding from the state = bigger
increases in tuition, room & board, and other fees paid by students and
their families.

The University of Nebraska at Lincoln wasn't the only institution whose
membership in the Association of American Universities was at risk this spring.

Syracuse University, a member since 1966, was also placed under review last
fall. But last month, as the review committee's work was concluding and it
became clear that Syracuse wouldn't meet the association's revised membership
criteria, university officials decided that they would leave the organization
voluntarily, rather than face a vote like Nebraska's, and notified the
leadership of its intentions.

It's not mentioned here, but Glover also considered Iowa...

Story by Nate Bauer
BlueWhite Illustrated
May 2, 2011

The Nittany Lions will have yet another new face next season.

Penn State men's basketball head coach Ed DeChellis has landed the commitment of
Sheridan (Wyo.) Sheridan Community College guard Matt Glover following his
weekend visit to Happy Valley.

After narrowing his choices to Nebraska, TCU, and Penn State, Glover said his
visit this weekend confirmed the direction he had already been leaning.

"I liked basically everything. I just had a really good feeling about it when I
left and when I was there the whole time, there wasn't anything that really
concerned me," he said. "The teammates were all great. They seemed like they
really stuck together and everything. The coaching staff was always asking
questions if I needed anything and stuff. It seemed like they really cared.

"The campus is great. The support academically is great too. Everything seems to
be really good."

After arriving on Thursday night, Glover met with host Tim Frazier and the Penn
State coaching staff before taking a tour of the facilities, academic support
and campus.

Having already done his research on the Nittany Lions' program, Glover recounted
the reasons he settled on playing at Penn State.

"I know the football team was always great but I knew the basketball team was
really good too," he said. "There's always been stuff about them that I had
heard from friends that was good."

At 6-foot-4, 205 pounds, Glover brings some size to the Lions on the perimeter.
Although he played the point through high school, this past season he spent most
of his action at the two-guard spot.

Not a pure shooter, Glover brings athleticism to the floor and lists his
distribution as one of his best attributes.

"I think I can create for other guys, get them open shots," he said. "I feel
like I can get them the ball in a position where they can score.

"I'm kind of like a combo because I can rebound and bring it up. With my size
and stuff, I can rebound it, get out on the break. At the junior college, I
played one through three. I can adjust and play different positions, so I feel
like it's not that big of a deal to just play different positions like that."

Glover said he wants to work on his shooting, specifically his midrange jumper
while shooting it more consistently as a whole.

With his college decision behind him and set to make it official on Monday in a
signing ceremony with his teammates, Glover said he is excited to start his new
career as a Nittany Lion.

"I'm pumped up and everything about it," he said. "It seems like a good
situation."

Professor,

My understanding was that kids went to our University for a Quality Education.

How come so much money is poured into huge Basketball and Football stadia? Why
is so much money spent on coaches who should be just like the other Professors
at the University?

I had some outstanding professors during my time there, but none of them got 10

The AP is reporting this is the richest deal in college sports at $225M/year,
more than the $220M/year for the Big Ten.

But this deal anticipates the addition of Colorado and Utah, while the Big Ten
figure was pre-Nebraska.

Story by John Ourand & Michael Smith
Street & Smith's Sports Business Daily
May 3, 2011

The Pac-10 Conference has agreed to a media rights deal with ESPN and Fox that
is worth more than $2.7B over 12 years, according to multiple sources. A formal
announcement could come as soon as tomorrow. The deal, which averages out to
more than $225M per year, includes football, basketball and Olympic sports
rights. It is more than triple the conference's current deals with ESPN and Fox.
The conference is holding some rights back that it still hopes to use for a
dedicated channel.

The deal is a blow to Comcast/NBC, which was vying to pick up the rights for
Versus but pulled out last week. Comcast/NBC still is in play to operate a
conference channel, but sources said it has told the conference that it is
unwilling to actually own such a channel. As part of its deal, ESPN is picking
up football and basketball rights, plus rights to a package of Olympic sports.
ESPN has committed to carrying an unknown number of football games in primetime
on ABC.

Fox picked up football and basketball rights. It will carry football games on
its Fox broadcast channel in primetime and on FX. It will carry basketball games
on FSN. ESPN and Fox will rotate coverage of the Pac-10's basketball tournament
and football championship game. The conference becomes the Pac-12 on July 1 when
Colorado and Utah enter the conference.

The sports operations are separate and 100% self-sustaining. University and
state funds are not poured into athletics, as you know. Considering the impact
the sports teams have on cementing relationships with alumni, on fundraising and
on (non-sports) student recruitment, the existence of our sports programs is an
enormous positive.

What are you suggesting be done? Taking away the free choice of donors to
donate to athletics and ticket buyers to buy tickets?

Chris Petersen was an assistant coach at Boise State from 2001-2005 before
becoming head coach in 2006. His name has been on the speculation lists
regarding JoePa's successor...

Excerpt from story by Brian Murphy
Idaho Statesman
May 3, 2011

On July 6-23, 2005, Boise State first violates NCAA rules by providing
prospective football student-athletes reduced-cost housing, according to the
NCAA.

The NCAA alleges that, during the summers of 2005 through 2009, assistant
coaches and staff members arranged summer housing and transportation in Boise
with other student-athletes, sometimes for free or at a reduced cost, for 63
prospective student-athletes so they could participate in otherwise valid summer
workouts.

In each case, the student-athletes were provided housing by existing
student-athletes and slept in spare rooms, on couches or sometimes on the floor.
The total dollar value, as determined by the NCAA, for all of the housing,
transportation and meals provided to the 63 prospective student-athletes over
five years was $4,934.

Twenty-three of the student-athletes paid the full value of housing,
transportation and meals, so there were no excess benefit violations, only
"arranging" allegations.

Arranging housing, even if the prospective student-athlete pays for it, is
impermissible.

generator for the full house. He says he can get one cheap and install it...

We have a golfing vacation planned for Thursday... still no electricity here
though.

But how are your Solar panels doing? I read that all the Solar panels and Wind
Generators were up and running the day after the Tsunami hit Japan.

Mark sent me some special Actuators which make my Solar panels track the sun,
and they are cranking out the KWhrs!! I can run my router, computer, etc right
off of "free" electricity.

Not sure why Kevin wants to keep drilling in up state New York, when petroleum
is showing up in all the drinking wells. Same for all the shale drilling in PA!

Just wanted to chime in and say I was very relieved to know Dave is OK.
Our area (Auburn/Opelika, AL) was spared. Plenty of winds and sirens
but limited damage. One of my employees lives ~20 miles north on Lake
Martin. Their house, vehicles, boats etc were all destroyed. Amazingly
they survived being thrown 80+ feet as the tornado blew the house away!
She suffered a triple compound fracture of her left femur but her
condition is improving.

Sports related... she is a big AU fan (all sports) and has/had a lot
of memorabilia (etc). We have great connections at "little" AU and are
working with the AD and Athletics to replace some of her lost keepsakes.
It is amazing how everyone responds in times like these. Even AU is
collecting for UA. I've been to Tuscaloosa a lot for sports and
business - I can't even recognize it now!

I thought you were going to say that your solar panels landed over here in

I'd be more impressed if you said you had an old Honda S2000, which had
push-button starting.

Thanks bd... We were spared this one. I hate taking Joanie out because she sees
empty home foundations and starts to cry. We were in Wal-Mart getting some of
what little they had and she was hugging everybody.

Thats OK. Paterno is going to drag his butt to the stadium on Saturdays and
pretend he is the Coach until he draws his last breath. At the rate he is going,
Peterson would have already retired from coaching.

No excuses for Sparty for next year's opener...

Story by Brian Murphy
The Idaho Statesman

The Boise State University football team will have at least three fewer
preseason practices as it prepares for this year’s season opener against
Georgia in Atlanta.

The Broncos also will award three fewer scholarships over the course of the next
two seasons and be allowed three fewer preseason practices before next year's
opener at Michigan State.

Story by Genaro C. Armas
The Associated Press
May 4, 2011

STATE COLLEGE, Pa.—Penn State and Ohio State are taking their Big Ten grudge
match to the volleyball court.

OK, the rivalry may not have the same intensity as a football slugfest at Beaver
Stadium or the Horseshoe. There's not even a Big Ten men's volleyball
conference.

But there will still be a lot at stake when the Nittany Lions (24-6) and
Buckeyes (24-6) meet Thursday night in the NCAA championship semifinals at Penn
State's Rec Hall. After all, a berth in the final on Saturday is at stake, as is
an opportunity to boost the national popularity of a sport that has its roots on
the Pacific Coast beaches.

Of course, a California school isn't out of the mix for a title, either.

The Ohio State-Penn State winner will meet either top-ranked and top-seeded
Southern California (23-3), or upstart UC-Santa Barbara (17-14) on Saturday
night.

"There's some West Coast bias in volleyball," said USC coach Bill Ferguson,
whose Trojans play in what is considered to be men's volleyball toughest league,
the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. "But that's not to say that there are
not unbelievable quality programs in Penn State and Ohio State.

"You've got the cool Big Ten thing going on. There's nothing negative that can
come of it."

But the championship is just one piece of a weekendlong event.

Penn State is a co-sponsor with USA Volleyball on an event called "Volleyball
Extravaganza." It's a first-of-its kind gathering that includes a U.S. men's
national training team scrimmage; a USA Volleyball boys clinic; and a boys high
school tournament that will include 35 teams.

"My intent was to raise the bar for future men's volleyball championship weeks,"
said Penn State coach Mark Pavlik, who helped create the event. "Let's turn it
into a celebration of men's and boys' volleyball to the stage that's the biggest
that our sport has."

Volleyball great Karch Kiraly, a U.S. women's national team assistant coach,
said it's a logical step to take to promote the sport on NCAA tournament
weekend, especially in a state like Pennsylvania which has a strong boys high
school volleyball reputation.

Unlike other countries, the United States does not have an established
professional volleyball league from which to draw players, so high schools and
colleges are the breeding grounds for the next batch of potential Olympians.

"This is looked at to help continue or accelerate the process of keeping the
sport in front of the eyeballs of lots of boys, and that's a great thing,"
Kiraly said Wednesday as he watched the Trojans practice.

At the high-school level, there are about 450,000 girls playing volleyball,
compared to about 50,000 boys. Kiraly said that is in part to a trickle-down
effect of the impact of the Title IX law, which mandates equal opportunities for
men and women in athletics.

The weekend's marquee attraction, though, remains the matches at Rec Hall, the
5,800-capacity home of the second-seeded Nittany Lions, who won their 13th
straight Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association championship this
season.

Ohio State split a pair of regular-season meetings with Penn State, winning in
Columbus in February, and losing last month in Happy Valley.

"I'm definitely more concentrated on the matches," Buckeyes middle hitter Kevin
Heine said, "trying not to get distracted by other things."

The Gauchos enter the semifinals with confidence. After all, they just upset USC
in their conference finals last week. UC-Santa Barbara is reveling so much in
its late-season surge that its postseason media guide has dubbed the Gauchos
"the official Cinderella team" of the tournament.

Senior Jeff Menzel is anxious for the rematch with USC, a preseason title
favorite.

"We looked at it as USC wasn't really happy," said Menzel, 6-foot-6 outside
hitter. "They wanted a sweet ride to the finals, and with us, they're not going
to get it."
