Penn State press release
December 5, 2010

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.--Penn State is heading back to Tampa Bay, as the Nittany
Lions will meet Florida in the 25th Outback Bowl on New Year's Day.

Penn State and the Gators today were selected for clash of national powers in
the 25th Outback Bowl on Saturday, January 1, 2011. The contest will kick at
1:00 p.m. ET in Tampa's Raymond James Stadium (65,657) will air on ABC and the
Penn State Sports Network. Coach Joe Paterno's squad will be meeting a
Southeastern Conference opponent in a bowl game for the third time in the past
six years.

"We are thrilled to be returning to the Outback Bowl," said Tim Curley, Director
of Athletics. "Everyone from Penn State has had an outstanding experience during
our previous trips to Tampa Bay. We're delighted to be playing in the Outback
Bowl's 25th anniversary game and one more opportunity for our great fans to
support this team. The hospitality extended to our squad and fans by the Outback
Bowl staff has been tremendous during our previous visits and we're looking
forward to the bowl events and attractions in the Tampa area."

"This team has worked hard all season and has been a great group to work with,"
stated Paterno, who is in his 45th season as head coach and is the all-time
leader in victories among major college coaches with a 401-133-3 (74.9) record.
"I'm happy for the squad that their efforts will be rewarded with an opportunity
to go to the Outback Bowl, where we have had some wonderful experiences, and be
involved in a good, tough game. It will be fun to go back to the Tampa Bay
area."

"When you talk about tradition and history of college football it just doesn't
get any better than Penn State and the University of Florida," said Outback Bowl
President/CEO Jim McVay. "It's our 25th anniversary game and we can't think of a
better way to celebrate it on New Year's Day than with Coach Paterno's Nittany
Lions and Coach Urban Meyer's Gators."

Florida will be the fourth Bowl Championship Series winner from the 2009 season
that the Nittany Lions have played this year, having already played at Alabama,
Iowa, and Ohio State.

Big Ten press release
December 5, 2010

The Big Ten Council of Presidents/Chancellors (COP/C) held its winter meetings
today in Park Ridge, Illinois. The following statement is issued by the Big Ten
office on behalf of the COP/C.

This time last year, the COP/C believed that the time was right for the
conference to explore the possibility of conference expansion and Commissioner
James E. Delany was asked to provide recommendations for consideration over the
next 12 to 18 months. The Big Ten began a thorough, deliberate evaluation and on
June 11, 2010, the COP/C unanimously approved an application for membership from
the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Since that announcement, the conference has
been actively engaged in incorporating Nebraska, both academically and
athletically, into the fabric of the conference and all parties eagerly await
the completed integration which will take effect in July, 2011.

During today's meeting it was decided that it was appropriate to focus
completely on conference affairs at this time. "We have been thoroughly engaged
in the process since last December," said COP/C Chair and Indiana University
President Michael McRobbie. "Following detailed discussions at today's meeting,
my colleagues and I can report that we believe that this process has reached its
natural conclusion. We are pleased with the addition of Nebraska and look
forward to working with our colleagues there in the years ahead."

Although the conference will continue to monitor the intercollegiate landscape,
it will not be actively engaged in conference expansion for the foreseeable
future and does not expect to be proactively seeking new members.

Story by Bob Ivry, Christine Richard, and Christopher Condon
Bloomberg
December 3, 2010

Deborah A. Cunningham, the manager of $261 billion at Federated Investors Inc.,
was squeezed into the bathroom of her family's recreational vehicle, trying to
help save the $3.6 trillion money market industry.

Cunningham was on the phone with Federal Reserve officials in Boston, New York,
and Washington. Outside, in the Pennsylvania State University stadium parking
lot in State College, football fans were preparing for a game against Temple
University.

"It was the only place I could hear," Cunningham said. "People were drinking
beer. They kept knocking on the door, saying, 'I have to go.'"

The solution Cunningham helped craft on Sept. 20, 2008, was a bailout for money
market funds, which were created as safe investments that could be easily cashed
out. The Fed put the facility into effect two days later. At its peak in October
2008, it provided $152 billion to stem a customer run sparked by the Sept. 15
bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc.

Temple (8-4) beat Army (6-5) and UConn (8-4). Temple will be home for the
holidays; Army will play in the Armed Forces Bowl and UConn is going to the
Fiesta Bowl. (Here's hoping Oklahoma brings a spare team of white ponies for the
Sooner Schooner!)

Hopefully the Cap One Bowl will be as interesting as the coaching dynamics are
intriguing. I've got Michigan State as a 13-point underdog against its former
coach, Nick Saban.

Tennessee had a home-and-home series scheduled with North Carolina in 2011 and
2012, but bought out of the contract for $750K. Now the teams will meet in the
Music City Bowl.

Bowl rematches are rare, but they make even less sense when the first game was a
blowout. Nebraska hammered Washington 56-21 in September, but the two teams will
tee it up again in the Holiday Bowl. (Was the fix in for the Big 12 to give one
final "Go screw yourself!" to Husker Nation?)

The early line has Auburn favored by three over Oregon.

Story by Marcus R. Fuller

December 5, 2010

The University of Minnesota apparently has ended its search for a new football
coach with Northern Illinois' Jerry Kill expected to be announced as Tim
Brewster's replacement at a press conference Monday.

After stating after Brewster's firing Oct. 17 that he was going after a "Tubby
Smith-type hire" in football, Gophers athletics director Joel Maturi obviously
failed to deliver on that level with Kill, who has only been a Football Bowl
Subdivision coach for three seasons.

But this was a big season for Kill.

The 49-year-old former two-time Division I-AA coach of the year went 10-3 this
season at Northern Illinois and earned a No. 25 ranking before losing 26-21 to
Miami (Ohio) on Friday in the Mid-American Conference title game.

Kill, who led NIU to a 34-23 victory over Minnesota on Sept. 23 at TCF Bank
Stadium, has compiled a 23-16 record since taking over the Huskies in 2008,
including losing two back-to-back bowl games.

Before taking over at Northern Illinois, Kill was the head coach at Southern
Illinois, Emporia State in Kansas, and Saginaw Valley State in Michigan. His
longest stint was at Southern Illinois, where he went 55-32, including five
straight playoff appearances and five straight seasons with at least nine wins.

The Pac-10 sent two teams to the BCS, Oregon and Stanford, leaving only Arizona
(7-5) and Washington (6-6) to fill their five non-BCS bowl slots. They will not
send representatives to the Sun, Maaco, and Kraft Fight Hunger bowls.

USC (8-5) is ineligible for a bowl this year and next because of the Reggie Bush
case and Arizona State (6-6) has two victories against I-AA schools.

The surface at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh gets the snot beat out of it every
year, with the Steelers, Pitt, and WPIAL Championships playing there.

I've long thought they should switch to FieldTurf, which is a wonderful
artificial surface. Word from the 'Burgh is that the Steelers like real grass.

When I heard this I assumed they meant the players prefer real grass, but now
I'm not so sure. Could the players in Pittsburgh and Chicago be polar opposites?

Excerpt from story by Dan Pompei
Chicago Tribune
November 30, 2010

It is the Bears' choice to have a natural grass playing surface at Soldier
Field, despite strong sentiment in the locker room for an infill surface. The
Park District would gladly switch to a synthetic surface if the Bears chose to
switch.

OK, let's see how I'm doing...

>> Insight Bowl, December 28
>> Missouri over Iowa by 5

Opened Mizzou -3, currently Mizzou -1

>> Texas Bowl, December 29
>> Baylor over Illinois by 4.5

Opened Baylor -2, Curently Baylor -1.5

>> Holiday Bowl, December 30
>> Nebraska over Washington by 13

Opened Nebraska -14, currently Nebraska -13

>> TicketCity Bowl, January 1
>> Texas Tech over Northwestern by 7

Opened TTech by 11.5, currently TTech by 9.5. (I forgot to account for Dan
Persa's injury or I'd have made my projected line higher.)

>> Outback Bowl, January 1
>> Florida over Penn State by 11

Opened Florida -5, but the money has poured in on the Gators and it's now up to
7.

>> Capital One Bowl, January 1
>> Alabama over Michigan State by 13

Opened Alabama -7, but the money has poured in on the Tide and it's now up to
10.5.

>> Gator Bowl, January 1
>> Mississippi State over Michigan by 3

Opened MSU -5, now it's MSU -6.

>> Rose Bowl, January 1
>> TCU over Wisconsin by 8

Opened Pick 'em, now it's TCU -2.5

>> Sugar Bowl, January 4
>> Ohio State over Arkansas by 4

Opened tOSU -2.5, now tOSU -3

Very disturbing to see the money rushing to Florida.

People betting this early are pretty sharp. Either they really like Florida or
they anticipate the public to jump on the Gators later.

If they can bet Florida giving less than 7 and bet PSU getting more than 7, they
are in position for a big score.

No chance of a big loss, that's the point.

Imagine you bet $100 on Florida giving 5.5 at -105 and bet $100 on Penn State
getting 7.5 at -105.

If Penn State wins or loses by five or fewer, you lose $105 on Florida and make
$100 on Penn State for a net loss of $5. If Florida wins by eight or more, you
win $100 on Florida and lose $105 on Penn State, again for a loss of $5.

But if Florida wins by 6 or 7, you win both bets, collecting $200.

So you're risking $5 to make $200 on an outcome that's got a reasonable chance
of coming to fruition.

Great hire by the Hoosiers...

INDIANAPOLIS--The Indiana Hoosiers will hire Oklahoma offensive coordinator
Kevin Wilson to be their new coach on Tuesday.

Wilson will be introduced as coach at a news conference at 4 p.m. ET in
Bloomington, a school source told ESPN.com's Adam Rittenberg.

The Associated Press earlier reported that Wilson would be Indiana's next coach,
citing a person with knowledge of the search.

Wilson will become the Hoosiers' sixth coach since 1996, and the move comes less
than two weeks after athletic director Fred Glass fired Bill Lynch.

Lynch posted losing records in each of his past three seasons in Bloomington and
won only three Big Ten games during the same three-year span after leading
Indiana to a bowl game in 2007, Indiana's first postseason appearance since
1993.

According to reports in Oklahoma, Wilson told reporters there that he
interviewed in Indianapolis on Monday but was not immediately offered the job.
After returning to Oklahoma, he was offered the job.

Terms were not immediately available, but Wilson just received a pay raise to
$430,000 per year in October.

Some Indiana players and former players were already tweeting about the decision
Monday night.

"So i guess we got a new coach. Time to get back to work," offensive lineman
Justin Pagan wrote.

Former running back Bryan Payton tweeted: "Ive always been impressed with OU's
off."

When Glass fired Lynch Nov. 28, he said the university would be willing to pay
top dollar to find a new coach--thanks in part to the millions each conference
school is getting from the Big Ten Network.

Wilson has been at Oklahoma, working with coach Bob Stoops, since 2002. He took
over as the sole offensive coordinator in 2006, when Chuck Long became coach at
San Diego State.

In 2008, Wilson won the Broyles Award as the nation's top assistant after the
Sooners scored an NCAA-record 716 points. Quarterback Sam Bradford also won the
Heisman Trophy that season.

This season, the Sooners finished fourth in the nation in yards passing per game
(336.8) and were No. 17 in scoring offense (36.4 points).

Wilson might not have the depth of Oklahoma's roster when he arrives, but he
could have a talented group to build around at Indiana if everybody stays--as
players said they would.

Wilson will start the rebuilding process with a large group of talented
receivers.

Damarlo Belcher, a 6-foot-5, 215-pound junior, returns after catching a
team-high 78 passes for 832 yards and four touchdowns. Also back are 6-3,
200-pound receiver Duwyce Wilson, who had 32 catches for 488 yards and three
scores, and tight end Ted Bolser, who had five TD catches. Both are redshirt
freshmen.

Indiana's most talented runner, sophomore Darius Willis, should be healthy, too.
He missed the final eight games after having season-ending knee surgery in
October.

Plus, if junior Tandon Doss decides to stay in college instead of leaving for
the NFL, Wilson can build around the Hoosiers' most versatile offensive player.
The 6-3, 195-pound junior was third on the team in receiving (63 receptions, 706
yards, seven TDs) and rushing (11 carries, 163 yards, one TD).

But he will have to pick a quarterback. Two-year starter Ben Chappell has
graduated, and it could be a two-man race between redshirt freshman Dusty Kiel,
the nephew of former Notre Dame quarterback Blair Kiel, and redshirt freshman
Edward Wright-Baker, who is more of a dual threat.

And Wilson will get to rebuild his personal rivalry with Nebraska, which will
become the newest Big Ten member next season. Following Saturday's Big 12
championship game, Wilson talked about the end of the Oklahoma-Nebraska rivalry
and compared it to that of the Celtics-Lakers.

Minnesota athletics director Joel Maturi was probably a little too candid in
this interview with Bob Sansevere of the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

Some juicy excerpts...

Q: You said you'd try to get another Tubby Smith.

A: Yeah, I did. I offered it to Barry Alvarez, and he didn't take the job.

Q: I've heard you say that three times now. Did you truly say, "Barry, do you
want to come here and coach the Gophers?"

A: Yeah, I did.

Q: And his response?

A: He said, "I like what I'm doing. And my days of coaching are done."

Q: So you were sincere when you asked?

A: Well, I know Barry pretty well now.

Q: But it was a serious offer?

A: Oh, yeah. Heck, yeah. I said, "If we could make this work."

Q: What about somebody from the Wisconsin staff?

A: We talked to lots of coaches.

Q: Dozens? Under, over a dozen?

A: We talked to lots of coaches. You know, I haven't kept track.

Q: Jerry Kill made light of not being his wife's first choice. What choice was
he here? How many coaches turned you down before he took it?

A: Tony Dungy turned me down. Barry Alvarez turned me down. Tubby Smith turned
me down. So he's at least No. 4.

Q: Any others turn you down?

A: We're not going to go there.

Q: Were you ever close to Chris Petersen of Boise State, because his name came
up toward the end of this process?

A: I'm not going to go there.

Q: Would you go here: Did you ever talk to (former Gopher and two-time Grey Cup
championship coach) Marc Trestman or (former Texas Tech coach) Mike Leach about
the job?

A: Nobody finished second in this job. We interviewed several people that were
interested in the position, and we ended up with Coach Kill. And we're excited.
I think you can see the type of individual he is. I think he's perfect for the
University of Minnesota at this time. I think he's going to be here a long time.

My friend Jerry Palm discovered an error in the final BCS rankings. He was only

The scary thing is that nobody is looking over the shoulders of the other five

Excerpt from story by Jerry Palm
CBS Sports
December 6, 2010

The final BCS ratings show LSU ranked 10th and Boise State 11th. But I
discovered a mistake that would switch the order of those teams. The Broncos
should be BCS No. 10.

Wes Colley's final rankings, as submitted to the BCS, were incorrect. The
Appalachian State-Western Illinois FCS playoff game was missing from his data
set. I will spare you some of the gory, mathematical details, but the net result
of that omission in Colley's rankings is that LSU, which he ranked ninth, and
his No. 10, Boise State, should be switched. Alabama and Nebraska, which he had
17th and 18th, would also be swapped.

The impact on Nebraska and Alabama is negligible. Nebraska is still the 17th
ranked overall computer team either way. The Huskers' BCS score would go up
slightly, but they wouldn't still rank 18th. Colley's ranking is discarded for
Alabama because it is the worst ranking for the Tide. But LSU and Boise State
are so close in the overall BCS standings (.0063) that this one error switches
the order. Boise State should be 10th in the overall BCS standings and LSU
should be No. 11.

BCS press release
December 6, 2010

The National Football Foundation today released revised final BCS standings. The
revision was necessitated by a miscalculation in the Colley computer rankings,
where the Appalachian State-Western Illinois FCS playoff game was omitted from
the final Colley rankings. Mr. Colley discovered this error in a subsequent
review and informed the BCS group earlier today. The net result of the error is
that Boise State goes from No. 11 to No. 10 and LSU goes from No. 10 to No. 11
in the revised BCS final standings as shown below.

"I was deeply disturbed when I learned about this today. This error should not
have happened and is unacceptable. The final standings have been corrected.
Fortunately, it had no effect on any team's eligibility for the BCS games. But
the simple fact that it could have means this issue will be near the top of the
agenda for the conference commissioners' annual review next spring," said Bill
Hancock, Executive Director of the BCS.

The final standings are as follows:

1. Auburn
2. Oregon
3. TCU
4. Stanford
5. Wisconsin
6. Ohio State
7. Oklahoma
8. Arkansas
9. Michigan State
10. Boise State
11. LSU
12. Missouri
13. Virginia Tech
14. Oklahoma State
15. Nevada
16. Alabama
17. Texas A&M
18. Nebraska
19. Utah
20. South Carolina
21. Mississippi State
22. West Virginia
23. Florida State

That reminds me of the golf program I wrote in Cobol and used IMS when I was at
Valero in the 80s. It had every course in the San Antonio programmed into it. It
knew the par for every hole on a course and used each hole for handicap
calculations.

The program calculated everyone's handicaps but didn't account for "better" that
scratch golfers. Since the league was handicapped these figures meant how many
strokes you would get the next week playing against somebody better.

Since I hadn't accounted for negativity (or a better than scratch handicap) a -2
handicap wound up being a 2. I discovered it before anyone else noticed.

23. Florida State
24. Hawaii
25. Central Florida
