Subject: NCAA investigating Vols

Coach Hook, what's the mood in Knoxville?

I'm still amazed that USC, already under a cloud of suspicion from the Pete
Carroll Era, hired a known shady character as his successor...

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP)--The NCAA has interviewed several current and former
Tennessee coaches and recruits regarding an investigation into possible
recruiting violations, people with knowledge of the probe have told The
Associated Press.

The people spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.

ESPN reported Friday that Tennessee expects to receive a letter of inquiry soon
about possible violations under former coach Lane Kiffin and his staff.

After practice at Southern California on Friday, Kiffin restated his opinion
that the investigation won’t find any wrongdoing. The coach also said the NCAA
investigators will be in Los Angeles at some point this fall to interview
assistant coaches who followed Kiffin from Knoxville to Los Angeles earlier this
year.

“They started looking into things when we were there, eight or nine months
ago,” Kiffin said. “All the reports I’ve heard is that there’s nothing
wrong.”

Tennessee self-reported six minor recruiting violations by Kiffin and his staff
during their one-year tenure and in December acknowledged cooperating with an
NCAA investigation into actions by the school’s Orange Pride athletics hostess
program.

The Volunteers have not reported any violations since Kiffin’s departure in
January, however, and the interviews with coaches and recruits took place in the
spring.

When asked if he was worried about the impact of another NCAA investigation,
Kiffin replied: “Absolutely not at all. There’s no way. I have great
confidence in what we did there, that we didn’t do anything wrong...That’s
(the NCAA’s) job, to make sure there isn’t any wrongdoing. Just because
they’re looking into something doesn’t mean we did anything wrong.”

USC was hit with major NCAA sanctions shortly after Kiffin’s arrival,
including a two-year bowl ban, scholarship restrictions and four years of
probation.

I had the pleasure of traveling to Michigan on Friday. St. Joseph, to be exact,
which is hard on Lake Michigan, about 90 miles from downtown Chicago.

The weather and the town were beautiful. I met with a developer who has a lot of
projects and a lot of contacts.

Unfortunately for him, his local sources of capital have all but dried up.
However, this has created an opportunity for me, as we have access to lenders
who are still lending on strong deals.

After my meeting I walked down the main drag, State Street, a quaint street
which is full of shops, restaurants, etc. I was dying for an ice cream cone and
found Kilwin's, where I had a "small" cone of blueberry ice cream. I found two
other ice cream shops during my short walk.

The "Twin Cities" of St. Joseph and Benton Harbor form an amazing contrast. St.
Joe's is 94% white, with 3% unemployment. Benton Harbor, on the other side of
the St. Joseph River, is 92% black with 17% unemployment, one of the highest
rates in Michigan.

I told Mrs. Trader that St. Joseph needs to be on our short list when it's time
to look for a vacation home. She's been there before and readily agreed.

Mark, ImPoster, et. al., have you ever been to St. Joseph? Definitely a place to
check out when you visit the other side of the state.

Finally got to listen to this. I don't think he sounds so great. He sounds
weaker, slower, older. Not as sharp as I remember. Not a good sign.

We are starting our vacation week in OC NJ. I am telling you yesterday when
running on the beach I ran right by Ralph Friedgen. I'll be walking the
beach again today to see if I can locate him. I am at the corner of 54th
and Central and the coach must be north of us somewhere between 50th and
40th. If this isn't Ralph Friedgen than he has a twin brother. Can't
really believe he would be vacationing with the season kicking off soon.

Brian, it seems unlikely the Fridge was in Jersey yesterday...

Story by Dan Steinberg
Washington Post
August 7, 2006

Ralph Friedgen went fishing nearly every morning during his three-week vacation
last month. Then he went back to his vacation home in Georgia, retreated to the
basement and spent four or five hours staring at two computer screens and
plotting Maryland's return to success.

As soon as his vacation ended, he was back working his real summer hours,
arriving early at Maryland's football offices--usually by 6 a.m.--and leaving
late. Last Sunday, he spent 11 hours in the football offices, alone.

where did everyone go?

don't we have 3 or 4 heisman candidates and 6 or 10 first round draft picks
this year. you know like daryLL clark. some might be thinking that evan
royster could go for the hesiman. not likely. joe will make sure he doesn't
score too many touchdowns. if it looks like you have a chance to get on ESPN
joe makes sure you won't get the ball. if royster's last name ended in a
vowel it might different. something like gino capaspaghetti.

joe is making it tough on me this year. moving iron hands powell to defense
was a real set back.

i'm not too worried. is joe is actually still making decisions? if so, our
least talented, no hope for the future, is the QB Joe will pick.
congratulations mc gloin. this will insure the only points we score against
alabama will be on defense. or if our defense puts us first and goal at the
one tenth of a yard, yard line.

on the other hand, i am still holding out hope.

each year i think to myself, maybe we have a super secret shelley hammonds
player that will emerge and blow us away. we did have one recently. his name
was deon butler. if his name would have been derrick williams joe would have
allowed him to become a heisman candidate.

so maybe we have like a super stud offensive lineman hidden away that joe
didn't like because he looked like he could really play if given a chance
but we were in a year where we had to play someone who couldn't play but
wouldn't make any mental mistakes.

like joe always says. we don't want to give them to much to soon. which
translates to, it doesn't matter how good you are if you haven't been here
for a while the only thing you are going to be doing is going to class.

meanwhile urban meyer said when asked do you have any superstars? he said, i
don't know who they are yet, but we have them. translation, we will play
everyone in the warm up games and let that tell us who can make plays with
100,000 people watching.

meanwhile, this year 5 players from palm beach county went on to play in the
big ten. this means the big ten, not the big eleven, not penn state.

i am hoping that i don't miss josh hull. if i miss josh hull the season will
be over by game six.

meanwhile what is the offense over under for alabama. i mean the over under
for how many points the penn state offense is going to score.

can't we get tony D back in here by now?

For the Class of 2010 Penn State finished first in the Big Ten per Rivals.com.
Our average star rating was 3.55. The five players you referenced from Palm
Beach County averaged 3.40 stars, as follows...

3-star WR from Delray Beach to Illinois
4-star DT from Pahokee to Michigan
3-star RB from Delray Beach to Minnesota
4-star WR from Delray Beach to the Ohio State
3-star DB from Wellington to Wisconsin

I'll set the PSU Points Total at 8.5. Which side do you want, for a buck? (It's
total points scored, including special teams and defense.)

in his answers to questions.

Schad said he felt a little better about Joe after getting a 15-minute
one-on-one interview with him later in the day.

It's hell growing old.

I spoke to a friend who is close to a Paterno family member and they said that
the QB position is really wide open. Obviously one Paterno is more comfortable
with Newsome, and one is more comfortable with a drop back passer.

Reports on FOS indicate that the kid from Michigan came to play. He's prepared
and competing. How exciting.

All that means is McGloin will probably start and my first official act will be
to head back to the parking lot after the YSU kickoff.

have gained weight. He thought he really aged since last year. Seemed
involved but did not have his old energy.

joe actually said in one of his interviews that he was watching his weight.
he said it in the sense that because he isn't moving around he needed to
lose weight.

he did look thiner. but that could be the result that they got him some new
cloths that actually fit.

he also said, will see when they asked him about running on to the field.

i believe we play better when joe is upstairs. i don't think he will be on
the sideline all season. if at all.

At the Big Ten Media thing I definitely remember the reporter asking JoePa if he
had LOST some weight and Joe said yes but that he had been TRYING to lose weight
and wanted to lose 5 or 6 lbs more.

I guess I am no different than anyone else. Every year I hope Penn State
takes the high risk road. This would be a good year to go for it at QB. I
just never give up hope.

The oddest thing in my opinion is how Joe changed his routine at QB. Look at
the 60s, 70s and 80s. All of our great Qbs started as sophs. Kerry Collins
would have continued the tradition had he not broken his finger "fooling
around".

Even when Zach Mills came in and played like Johnny Unitas he went back to
the bench, at first, for Senneca.

You could clearly see that Galen wanted Morelli to go in when he was a soph.
They even had him warming up on the sideline. obviously joe vetoed that idea
twice including at wisconsin. Who knows what would have happened. Maybe
morelli would have won the game, gotten the confidence of his teammates and
gone on to live up to his potential. It was very clear that they didn't want
to play for Morelli during his junjior and season year. Morelli was a finger
pointing, blamer and that won't work at QB. Re:Kevin Thompson. The same
Kevin Thompson that let it fly and watched them die.

Here is a novel idea. Let these young Qbs play some before the Big Ten
season and see if they are up to it.

I would rather hear the arm chairs bitch about our new inexperienced young
QB this year then have them bitch about some guy that is not gonna do it.

I think our quarterbacks and the eight-men-in-the-box defenses will make sure
Royster doesn't score too many touchdowns.

Definitely a wise decision. He's not really a receiver and we appear to be
loaded there...if only someone can get them the ball.

2010 is going to be a long season. I just hope that (a) I'm completely wrong

2011.

For the Class of 2010 Penn State finished first in the Big Ten per Rivals.com.
Our average star rating was 3.55. The five players you referenced from Palm
Beach County averaged 3.40 stars, as follows...

3-star WR from Delray Beach to Illinois
4-star DT from Pahokee to Michigan
3-star RB from Delray Beach to Minnesota
4-star WR from Delray Beach to the Ohio State
3-star DB from Wellington to Wisconsin

>> meanwhile what is the offense over under for alabama? i mean the over under
for how many points the penn state offense is going to score. <<

I'll set the PSU Points Total at 8.5. Which side do you want, for a buck? (It's
total points scored, including special teams and defense.)

Admittedly it was only for 15 plays and against our fifth string defense, buy
Paul Jones sure had "the look" in the Blue-White game. Some kids just look like
players and he had that look.

I'm with BobbyD on this. It's time for them to have a real competition at QB and
let the best man win. It's not about 2010, it's about being a contender next
year. It starts by making the correct QB choice now. 60's Joe would have gone
with upside and potential. I wonder what 2k10 Joe does? I'm not sure.

Our average star rating was 3.55. The five players you referenced from Palm
Beach County averaged 3.40 stars, as follows...
>
> 3-star WR from Delray Beach to Illinois
> 4-star DT from Pahokee to Michigan
> 3-star RB from Delray Beach to Minnesota
> 4-star WR from Delray Beach to the Ohio State

> I'll set the PSU Points Total at 8.5. Which side do you want, for a buck?
(It's total points scored, including special teams and defense.)

I want to sell March Wheat futures at the Chicago Board of Trade and buy March
Wheat futures at the Minneapolis Grain Exchange. Unfortunately, my clearing
house, Interactive Brokers, is not a clearing member of the MGEX.

Chicago is currently trading at a 25-cent premium to Minneapolis. We'll monitor
this paper trade.

You may recall that the last spread I talked about was buying platinum and
selling gold at parity, which worked out HUGE, several hundred dollars per
ounce. CBOT vs. MGEX Wheat is a similar trade, a "quality spread."
