We are getting killed in recruiting, to be sure, but I would fine-tune the
subject line to "JoePa's health killing recruiting?" If he made it to all the
"Evening With Joe" events, opposing recruiters would have a lot less ammo to
attack his age.

It's amazing how fast perceptions can change. We're coming off back-to-back 11-2
seasons, a Cap One Bowl victory over LSU, and a Top Ten recruiting class. But
suddenly we're indistinguishable from Temple in the eyes of high school studs.

I'm looking forward to renewed recruiting energy when Joe retires and takes
Galen and Anderson with him. Galen doesn't recruit at all and Anderson is
getting killed in Jersey, where Pitt apparently has some energetic young hotshot
assistant.

Well, the subject line was a reference to the title of the article, "Joe
Paterno's Getting Old Again, and It's Killing Recruiting." Had Joe's health
been the focus, you would be correct.

I share your dismay that the PSU OC does not seem to recruit (I don't remember
reading anything definitive about Hall's recruiting efforts) and that Dick
Anderson no longer gives PSU an edge in NJ. I am not, however, convinced that
Penn State will improve when Joe retires.

There's been nothing to read about Galen's recruiting "efforts" because he has
an agreement with Joe that he doesn't have to recruit off-campus.

The next coach will have at least two spots to fill (Galen and Anderson will
retire with Joe) and I guarantee a major factor in the new hires will be their
ability to recruit specific geographic areas.

If Bradley is the new coach, someone will have to take his spot in the WPIAL and
we must have someone to replace Anderson in Jersey/NYC.

NEW YORK (AP)--Police say Tennessee Titans backup quarterback Chris Simms told
them he'd been smoking marijuana before he was stopped while driving
Thursday--but he says he was just talking about cigarettes.

Simms, a son of former New York Giants quarterback Phil Simms, called the case
against him "very weak" as he left a Manhattan courthouse after his arraignment
on charges of driving while impaired by drugs.

Police and prosecutors said Simms slurred his words, had bloodshot eyes, and
smelled of marijuana when stopped early Thursday at a downtown Manhattan police
checkpoint, with his wife, Danielle, in the car.

According to a court complaint, Simms told an officer he'd been "smoking
marijuana in the car earlier."

Unrelated story. Last weekend was playing in a golf event. My foursome is
waiting on the 10th tee for the hole to open up and the group behind us
pulls up. Guy in that group is wearing a Texas Longhorns hat. Guy in my
group (not a PSU grad) says kiddingly "what's with the Texas hat in central
PA? This is Lion Country". I pay no attention. The guy in the Texas hat
responds "...poor Penn State, trying to find themselves the last 10 years."

Now my hair is up. As this guy walks by me I say "Do you follow college
sports?" He mutters something and walks away.

Guy in my group noticed my reaction and asks what I meant...I mention
graduation rates for all student athletes at PSU, the Sears Directors Cup,
PSU bowl and Big Ten achievements, women's volleyball title streak (with the
dramatic win over Texas), etc. etc.

I don't know how successful Texas athletics is, perhaps very successful and
more so than PSU...but why pop-off?

Brian,

I do a considerable amount of work with and through UT Austin, and I can
guarantee you that most folks I speak to are quite impressed by PSU and
especially by Joe Paterno. In fact, word in these parts is that Mack Brown is
"a younger version of JoePa."

These people are no more arrogant than some Penn State fans. Now, there is a
form of innate pride in the state of Texas that I never saw in Pennsylvanians
(doesn't mean it isn't there, just that I never have seen it so entrenched as it
is among Texans). UT-Austin is a legitimate national power in the 3 sports that
mater most to people in the state: football, baseball, and basketball (in that
order). In fact, in very recent times, UT has been ranked #1 in all 3 at
various times in their seasons. Penn State is pretty much irrelevant in 2 of
those 3 sports.

Keep in mind, to, that Texas went through a rather lengthy period of mediocrity
from about 1984 to 1998 (1 or 2 solid seasons in there, but nothing consistent).
Longhorn fans are now riding the wave of success, and the recent courtship by
other conferences, with daily references to UT being the "crown jewel everyone
wants," has simply puffed up the pride among these fans.

Anyway, I find it refreshing to talk football with people who don't genuflect at
the name of Ohio State.

What a Tale of Two Seasons for Longhorn hoops in 2009-10.

During the first half they were 17-0 and ranked #1.

During the second half they were 7-10 and not even worthy of the NCAA
Tournament, where they lost in the first round.

Maybe someday Penn State will be good enough to limp to an NCAA Tournament loss.

Fair enough.  I never broad-brush one person's behavior as a
representative sample.  For example, I worked with a lot of WV people
and Alabama people at my old job and none of them had any disparaging
words against PSU the school or athletics program.  I just didn't get
the response to the friendly 'what's with the Texas hat in Central PA'
comment.

And then there is this kind of stuff:

PSU Football Team Notches Win -- In The Classroom

Fifteen Earn Dean’s List Recognition For 3.5 GPA Or Higher

POSTED: 6:07 pm EDT July 1, 2010
UPDATED: 10:05 am EDT July 2, 2010

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The Penn State football team produced another
outstanding academic performance during the Spring 2010 semester, with
39 returning squad members earning at least a 3.0 grade point
average.Among the 39 Nittany Lions, 15 earned Dean's List recognition
by posting a 3.5 GPA or higher this past semester.Three returning
Nittany Lions earned a perfect 4.00 grade point average during the
spring semester – junior wide receiver Ryan Scherer, redshirt freshman
guard John Urschel and senior guard Stefen Wisniewski, a 2009 first
team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American. Urschel also earned a
4.0 GPA during the fall semester.A member of the Schreyer Honors
College, Wisniewski has a cumulative 3.92 GPA in secondary education,
having earned a 4.00 GPA the last three semesters. The 2010 first team
pre-season All-American will have an opportunity to become Penn
State’s initial three-time Academic All-American. He is on schedule to
graduate in December. The academic performance brings the number of
Nittany Lion football student-athletes to 35 who had a cumulative 3.0
GPA through the spring semester.Among some of the other Dean’s List
football student-athletes last spring were: wideout Brett Bracket,
linebacker Chris Colasanti, tight end Garry Gilliam, Ty Howle, Kyle
Johnson, Pete Massaro, Matt Stankiewitch, Nate Stupar and Jamie
VanFleet. In addition to Wisniewski, other Nittany Lions who should be
Academic All-America candidates include Colasanti, Massaro,
Stankiewitch, Stupar and defensive end Kevin Latham. The academic
performance is the latest success in a long line of academic
achievement for members of Joe Paterno's program, who consistently are
near the top nationally in academic success:

Penn State’s 89 percent federal graduation rate and 85 percent
Graduation Success Rate led all teams ranked in the final 2009
Associated Press Top 25 poll, according to NCAA data released in
November, 2009.
The past two years, Penn State has led all Football Bowl Subdivision
(FBS) teams in first team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans.
During the 2009 season, three Nittany Lions repeated their Academic
All-America accolades: Hull, Pitz and Wisniewski.
A program record five Nittany Lions were selected to the 2008 ESPN The
Magazine Academic All-America team. Penn State has had 12 Academic
All-Americans over the past four years, including 10 first-team
honorees.
During Paterno’s tenure, Penn State has had 44 Academic All-Americans,
with 34 earning first team honors. The Nittany Lions' all-time total
of 46 Academic All-America football players ranks third among all FBS
institutions and leads all Big Ten schools.
Sixteen players on the 2009 Penn State squad had graduated prior to
the Nittany Lions’ Capital One Bowl win over LSU, with nine doing so
before the season began.

Well, I must admit that even the deans I work with at UT are not so concerned
about the football team's grad rate as most Penn State fans seem to be. My
guess is that they are aware that UT has a solid academic reputation as a
"public ivy" and don't fret that athletes are tarnishing that image.

Now, when I talk football with Longhorn friends, the issue often gets a little
more "eye rolling." None of them would trade Jordan Shipley for a 4.0 Ryan
Scherer (unless that 4.0 were his speed in the 40).

Grad rates are wonderful bragging points when PSU is also 11-1 or 10-2 all the
time. It was great to have Mike Reid playing concerts when he wasn't
demolishing opposing offenses. But Texas fans get that football is about
football. There is tremendous respect down here for Joe Paterno and his legacy,
but we PSU fans are aware that we lose too often to Iowa and Ohio State (and
formerly the Evil Empire) to boast of being the conference Big Dog.

Penn State fans deserve to be proud of Joe's consistent emphasis on education.
"The Grand Experiment" was a factor in establishing PSU's national reputation.
But if those early years saw the Lions lose 8 of 10 to Syracuse or 8 of 12 to
Pitt while not contending for a national title, I seriously doubt grad rates
would have consoled the fans.

I totally hear you.
But I will never be ashamed of the emphasis on academics PSU places
(on all) of its programs. It should be a source of pride for all PSU
alums. So should the fact that PSU sits above Texas in the Sears
Directors Cup standings. <http://www.nacda.com/> I guess I would
politely suggest to the eye rollers they might be selling themselves
short....that it can be done....but if it's not a publicly stated
priority for them (as it is for PSU) I suspect I would be met with
more eye rolling. I can tell you the WV and Alabama people I knew
never did that. I understand The Success with Honor philosophy is
viewed in many segments of our society as an archaic belief system
that should be discarded...be it in college sports, the work world,
personal conduct, etc.

Good one!

No, I don't Penn State will ever produce a lottery pick. They have to do things
the old-fashioned way, by having a team with a bunch of juniors and seniors who
are multi-year starters. In other words, hopefully Penn State can make a splash
once a decade or so.

I'm sorry that I wasn't afforded my "individual STEP counseling session" as I-AA

Just barely. I find the B/W fame more compelling than YSU. No disrespect

You will get to see the QB controversy materialize as Newsome plays well and
runs for a few TDs and McGloin passes much better but is not quite the runner
Kevin is. Then McGregor and Jones take the team up field starting in the late
3rd qtr against a very tired Youngstown D looking very good indeed.

And Bolden doesn't even play.

I'm sorry that I wasn't afforded my "individual STEP counseling session" as I-AA
opponents were on my list of grievances. YSU on the Big 10 Network isn't exactly
must-see TV. I gotta think it's 50/50 that I won't bother going inside from the
tailgate.

If not for the Big Ten Network, we'd never see this game on TV.

At least YSU is a legitimate I-AA team. Multiple National Championships and
Championship Game appearances; competitive in their conference.

Wait until next year, when we get Penn State's worst-ever opponent, Indiana
State...

I've heard great things about Bolden's arm and athleticism. However, he ran a
very unsophisticated offense in high school and threw the ball just 10-12 times
per game.

He has very little experience, so in the absence of a string of injuries, I
expect him to redshirt in 2010.

This is interesting--unless McGloin gets a start this year, we will likely have
a black starting QB for every game from 2005 through at least 2014.

Didn't Joe get some flack for starting a black QB several decades ago? What a
refreshing change that we are now focused on performance rather than skin color.

Are you referring to Mike Cooper in 1970? Cooper was not a very good QB; he was
replaced with Bob Parsons who was so good that Joe moved him the TE.

And that began the era of John Hufnagel against Army in 1970. Huffy led PSU from
2-3 to 7-3 in 1970 (Joe turned down the Peach Bowl invite) and then to 11-1 and
10-2 (11-1 if one counts OU's forfeit) in 1971-72.

My black brother Mike Cooper is the QB you are thinking of... He wasn't given a
fair chance. Bob Parsons just threw too hard (great punter though). Enter John
Hufnagel...

Thanks, Dave and OB. Yes, it was Cooper I was thinking of.

Interesting excerpt from that SI article:

>> The idea of being State's first black quarterback "doesn't faze me," says 6',
185-pound senior Mike Cooper. "I know I'm a good quarterback and a good
athlete." Cooper wears his hair neatly trimmed and avoids wearing his
bell-bottoms around Paterno, "who likes to kid me about my mod clothes." <<

Now nobody thinks twice about whether Penn State's QB is black or white. It's
all about performance. Shows you how far we've come as a country.

Option Bob:

>> Huffy led PSU from 2-3 to 7-3 in 1970 (Joe turned down the Peach Bowl
invite)... <<

Wow, turning down a bowl invitation is almost unthinkable these days, in the
absence of a coaching change. (Such as Notre Dame, circa 2009.) There's the
money, the impact on recruiting, and the extra practice time it gives you.

Who would we have played, 8-3 North Carolina or 10-0 Arizona State? (ASU whipped
UNC 48-26 to complete their perfect season.)
